DeJesus again...

His DSL stats blow everyone else’s stats out of the water. And he’s uber-young.

Carlos (Eric) Valdez

It’s a bit confusing, because his first name is actually Carlos, but for some reason he started being referred to by the name of Eric at the end of 2010, so he’s often referred to only as Carlos in past reports on him. Maybe he just wanted to anglicize his profile for oublic relation in preperation for his MLB career.

My exact worry when I discovered the different names last July, but then I saw that he was already cleared by the American DHS for a visa in February 2011. He must be clean if he got the visa and has been so brazen about using 2 different first names.

???? I'm intrigued

This is what I could find on Eric (Carlos ) Valdez.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GVUeGF0dIE

Carlos is an eligible 16 year old from La Romana, Dominican Republic. He’s 6’0, 180lb, Lg frame with a well proportioned athletic body. Valdez has upper body strength and strong lower half. Body type resembles Jose Guillen. He works out with former Pittsburgh Pirates/Cleveland Indian scout Josue Herrera. Josue is known for signing MLB players Jhonny Peralta-ss, Fausto Carmona-rhp, Rafael Perez-lhp among others.
Carlos has 3 above average tools, he poses a solid 60 arm, runs 6.6 60 yard dash and raw plus power. Valdez was a 2010 July 2nd eligible player that has presently emerged as one of the best talents available in Latin America. He’s an aggressive hitter with a sound approach and hits the ball with authority to all fields. Valdez is an exciting player to watch, his tools play in game situation now and he shows future projection to be a five tool player.
If this is the guy, I’m in. Check out the video.

Giants To Sign Eric Valdez

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 5, 2011 at 8:30am CST]
The Giants have agreed to sign outfielder Eric Valdez, the Dominican Prospect League announced. The prospect obtains a $325K bonus. Valdez has an extremely athletic body and profiles as a leadoff hitter with power, according to the league. He can steal bases and plays strong defense.

There is an Eric Valdez that is in the Mariners org, but it seems that the 16YO is the prospect the Giants signed.

That's him

Although he’s 17 now. Here’s what I have on him:

Carlos (Eric) Valdez: RHH, RF, La Romana, D.R. (6’0", 185) (DOB=6/22/94)
He’s a guy that has really blossomed during the 2010-11 season in the Dom Prospect League after getting regular playing time. He doesn’t have the typical lean and wiry Dominican build. He has a muscular and compact frame that would have probably landed him as a running back if he had been raised in the USA. Valdez opened some eyes as a member of the DPL All-Star team that toured the USA during February and March of 2011, playing games against professional minor league squads during their spring training. His speed (he’s been timed at 6.6 sec. in the 60 yard dash), bat and athleticism made him a standout performer on a team that had several players that later landed mulitmillion $$$ signing bonuses during the July 2, 2011 IFA signing period. He later displayed his raw power when he came in 2nd place in the DPL Homerun Derby held on May 6, 2011.

From the video that nvsfg posted above, I see a kid that has plus bat-speed, quick and strong hands, and who is very quick to the ball – you also get a good idea of his footspeed, arm strength and athleticism.

Pictures of Valdez from the joint press conference:

Contact seemed to carry over well to the Sally, good speed, OPB….tools ! Curious to see how he handles the next level.

He really should be playing in the CAL this season, but I have a sneaking suspicion that he’ll be held back a level (this time in Augusta) once again because Panik will be the SS in SJ and the Giants want Tomlinson to start everyday. I would prefer that they let Tomlinson play 2B in SJ (might as well have him get a headstart on the UT infielder role), but I’m guessing the Giants are going to give Jurica that spot as his one last shot to prove that they didn’t make a huge mistake drafting him in the 3rd round of the 2010 draft. I’m not sure what they plan on doing with Carlos Willoughby.

Agreed on Jurica.

I hope if tomlinson rakes, that they promote him mid-season esp. if Jurica is mediocre.

by Nivra on Jan 21, 2012 5:48 PM PST up reply actions

Maybe Jurica will uphold the Giants faith and make us all look silly.

How often in recent years have the Giants sent non-top picks to San Jose the year after they’re drafted? There’s Belt, Jurica, Crawford, Kieschnick … all these guys were drafted much earlier than Tomlinson. Mid-round college players almost always start out in Augusta. I’ll be very surprised if Tomlinson’s not placed there.

by Evan on Jan 21, 2012 6:08 PM PST up reply actions

Belt’s the lowest of that group (5th round).

by Roger on Jan 21, 2012 6:37 PM PST up reply actions

Which reminds me, I suppos Kieschnick and Jurica should probably be on Hesse lists around here somewhere. Certainly before Caragena and Valdez.

by Roger on Jan 21, 2012 6:40 PM PST up reply actions

Arnold again

But, as others have noted several times in the past month, it gets really boring voting for the same guy round after round.

Admittedly, I would also feel comfortable seeing Tomlinson, DeJesus, or Heston at this spot. It does seem a bit too early for Fuentes, Harrold, or D. Otero, though.

I like this stage of the CPL.

If you pick the right guy, you can just vote for him over and over and not have to worry about new comparisons or additions.

My son, so I'm told. And this stalwart young lad (Hi, free f.p. #14!).

Went with DeJesus

He was one of the best pitchers in his league while being really young. He also struck out guys in bunches, even though they were probably lots of hackers.

I think he’s a pretty deserving “lottery ticket” prospect for the #35 spot.

what happenned to Roibal this year? Is he still a giant farmhand?

Didn’t he make our top 40 last year? I guess he has slipped.

Going away for awhile.

Bummed I won’t get to see this finish up till 44. I’ve got a baby on the way and my company’s moving into a major financing round, so I won’t have time to play on these boards at least until Spring Training, possibly until the actual season.

Uber-excited to see how our guys perform in Augusta, SJ, and Richmond this season. Here’s to multiple breakouts and Tommy continuing to mash.

You won’t miss much. Good luck with the baby! Boy or girl?

We don't know yet...

We’re doing a homebirth and haven’t had a recent ultrasound, but I call her a “she.” She tends to settle on the lower right of the belly, so I expect that she’ll be able to get to balls hit deep in the hole pretty well. Let’s hope she has the arm to make that throw, too!

by Nivra on Jan 24, 2012 9:44 AM PST up reply actions

So she could be Katelyn Boyd ?

She recorded 79 runs for the Devils, which at 1.2 runs per game put her at third overall in national rankings. Boyd also led the squad in doubles with 14, and was second in RBIs with 66. Her 18 home runs were the 13th most in the nation as well. Katelyn’s name peppers the ASU record book, as her 2011 single season records include: batting average (.429 – 6th), home runs (18 – T-3rd), RBIs (66 – 4th), hits (82 – 6th), doubles (14 – T-9th), and stolen bases (20 – 13th). In career records, Boyd is now second overall in batting average with a .382 cumulative, third in home runs with 43, fourth in RBIs with 174, fourth in doubles with 43, fourth in stolen bases with 60, and 13th in hits with 217.
