Can't wait for baseball to begin in 2012? Wondering about the current pervasive mood of pessimism here on the McCoven? Well, take a few minutes to peruse this new article on Grantland.com by Bill James. But, I warn you, be prepared to grind your teeth and mutter under your breath at the computer screen as you relive the futility of the Giants' 2011 offense.

I got frustrated just reading some of those.

Never in doubt.

Here’s a sample:

3. July 20, 2011, Dodgers at San Francisco, Clayton Kershaw against Tim Lincecum
Tony Gwynn Jr. reached third base in the first inning on a single, an error, and a stolen base, but did not score. The Giants got runners in scoring position on stolen bases in the first and the second. The Dodgers got two on with two out in the third; still scoreless. Juan Rivera doubled for the Dodgers in the fourth; didn’t score. Andre Ethier doubled in the sixth, didn’t score. Dioner Navarro homered leading off the seventh for the game’s only run; Los Angeles 1, San Francisco, 0.

To summarize:

Timmy was involved in 10 of the 100 games – with a W-L record of 4-6.
Cain was involved in 4 – with a W-L record of 2-2.
MadBum was involved in 2 – with a W-L record of 0-2.
Vogelsong was involved in 1 – with a W-L record of 0-1.

Because W/L record is the most important stat in baseball...

If Lincecum were any good, he’d have won those 1-0 ballgames!

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

If he was really good he would have won the games 0-0 strictly on the strength of his greatness!

Seriously, screws this extra innings crap, if Lincecainbum pitch 9 innings of shutout ball and the game ends a tie, tie goes to them.

I read that as gazelleness… and had to do a double-take.

In the interest of blaming the victims

The Giants’ pitchers weren’t doing much to help themselves at the plate.

Damn Lincecum

Wants $44M over two years and he can’t even hit .200 for his career!

Seth Rosin can hit the side of a barn with a baseball. From space.
