I'm here, I'm here
IR counts towards the cap, LTIR doesn’t. Well, technically LTIR counts towards the cap, but teams are given an exemption for however much the injured player’s cap hit is on the existing cap. So if a team is right at the cap ceiling of $65M, and a player with a $5M cap hit goes on LTIR, they can now spend up to $70M on their roster, including the guy on LTIR.
Basically, IR is equivalent to baseball’s 15-day DL (only for 7 days), where LTIR is like the 60-day DL (only for 24 days or 10 games).
And Ryane Clowe is on IR so his roster spot is free for, say, Colin White (who was just activated from IR today). He won’t be missing all that much since the all star break is soon, and he can heal during that week.

Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker
One of the best moments in Giants history, 11/1/2010
Yeah, he was signed over the summer after being waived and bought out by the Devils, but he’s been injured for the past 9 games.
Fear the Fin - NEEDS MORE DOVES
Nice, good pickup, and this guy Winchester is very good. But White was basically a reserve? or what
Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker
One of the best moments in Giants history, 11/1/2010
White was a bottom pairing defenseman, the 5th or 6th guy. He played pretty regularly when not injured. I mean, the bottom two are rotating a lot since the Sharks are carrying eight defensemen, but he was one of the more permanent players in that role.
And Winchester was a training camp tryout that won a spot, which is pretty awesome.
Fear the Fin - NEEDS MORE DOVES
Nice, and yea i remember when you were talking about Winchester before the season even started and basically said how he looked good and won a spot on the roster. So far, so good.
They going to trade Nitty?
Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker
One of the best moments in Giants history, 11/1/2010
Probably. I mean, Greiss barely gets any starts as it is, and he’s signed for a fourth as much and for one more year.
And Nitty is more of a 1B type of goalie rather than backup, and with Niemi taking over the starting reigns, he should go to a place that needs a goalie. Like Tampa or the Islanders. Or Columbus, but with the signing of Brett Lebda today, I’m pretty sure they’re actively trying to tank at this point.
Fear the Fin - NEEDS MORE DOVES
Who would you rather have spotting for Niemi? Nitty or Greiss?
And yea, it doesn’t do Nitty or the org much justice having him just sit there and do nothing. So wait, he’d go BACK to Tampa? So it’s NY or the Lightning
Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker
One of the best moments in Giants history, 11/1/2010
Greiss. Younger, signed longer, and better (last of the Strelow-trained goalies!).
And I really have no idea who DW is talking to, but those are my guesses. Could be teams that need a backup.
Fear the Fin - NEEDS MORE DOVES
Nice. So basically he’s long-term
A backup that’d get a little more playing time than what he’s getting now
Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker
One of the best moments in Giants history, 11/1/2010
Well, longer term. The Sharks have tons of kick-ass goalie prospects:
JP Anderson – traded for like, 10 draft picks in the juniors
Thomas Heemskerk – Had a .937 save percentage in juniors
Harri Sateri – amazing name, apparently has the highest upside of all of them, played professionally in Sweden
Tyson Sexsmith – AHL all-star and his nickname is Sexy.
Alex Stalock – ALL HAIL STALOCK. AHL All-Star, set the AHL rookie record in pretty much everything, and his NHL stats are 1-0, 0.00 GAA and 1.000 SV%.
Fear the Fin - NEEDS MORE DOVES
That’s definitely good to know then. They basically stockpiled. And wait a minute, Sexsmith is a real name? I can’t imagine the fans at the tank with that name. Heard about Stalock, how far away is he?
Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker
One of the best moments in Giants history, 11/1/2010
He was basically ready to be backup this year, but had a MAJOR knee nerve injury and has been rehabbing for almost a year.
So who knows how far away he is now
by WhatsAMataHari on Jan 19, 2012 8:05 PM PST up reply actions
woa, so he had a bit of a setback?
Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker
One of the best moments in Giants history, 11/1/2010
Yup, Sexsmith is his real name. You should check out his goalie mask – it’s pretty much exactly what you’d think a guy with the last name of Sexsmith would put on there.
And Stalock was seriously injured last season (skate cut a nerve behind his knee), but now he’s on a rehab stint in Stockton, so he should be back in the AHL relatively soon. No idea when he’ll be ready for NHL action again.
Fear the Fin - NEEDS MORE DOVES
Aight, i’m definitely going to have to check that out, and he’s with Worcester?
HOLY SHIT, i definitely remember you telling me about that, that is INSANE. So Sexsmith is in Worcester as well?
Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker
One of the best moments in Giants history, 11/1/2010
Yup. Sexsmith and Sateri are with Worcester, Heemskerk and Stalock are with the Stockton Thunder (ECHL), and Anderson is in juniors (OHL, I believe).
Fear the Fin - NEEDS MORE DOVES

Forward. It’s like Freddie Hamilton, Michael Sgarbossa, Matt Nieto, and maybe 5 other guys that might make the bottom two lines.
Fear the Fin - NEEDS MORE DOVES
Those guys in the system? Nieto got drafted by the sharks, right?
Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker
One of the best moments in Giants history, 11/1/2010
Yeah. Nieto plays for BU, Sgarbossa plays for the Sudbury Wolves, and Hamilton plays for the Niagara Ice Dogs.
Fear the Fin - NEEDS MORE DOVES
Then they’d be eligible to play in the system when? Next year?
Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker
One of the best moments in Giants history, 11/1/2010
Nieto has three more years at BU, IIRC, but could potentially turn pro at any time. I believe Hamilton can play in the OHL for one more year, and Sgarbossa will be turning pro after this season.
Of course, all turning pro means is they’ll play for Worcester and not necessarily San Jose.
Fear the Fin - NEEDS MORE DOVES
See, i never understood that, and i remember you telling me how it all works with guys turning pro or staying in college. So Nieto can turn pro at any time though?
And yea, so this would be a few years away for Sgarbossa and maybe Hamilton
Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker
One of the best moments in Giants history, 11/1/2010
Yeah, they can pretty much go pro whenever they feel like not playing in College and playing hockey full time
by WhatsAMataHari on Jan 19, 2012 8:33 PM PST up reply actions
cool
i know basically it’s a one time thing if you decide to go to the OHL or college, and most of the good players just go OHL
Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker
One of the best moments in Giants history, 11/1/2010
Hockey is awesome in that a player can be drafted the year he turns 18, no matter if he’s going to college or juniors. NHL teams hold onto the rights to the players for a year or (in the case of college players) until they leave college, and then they must sign the player to an entry level contract.
If he goes the junior route, he has to play juniors until he’s 20 OR has to play in the NHL, no AHL. The college route can have the player turn pro early and play in the AHL at any time.
Fear the Fin - NEEDS MORE DOVES
That is awesome, so he can continue his education basically.
Couture played OHL then right into NHL then, right?
Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker
One of the best moments in Giants history, 11/1/2010
Pretty much. It also allows players to develop longer.
Couture actually played in the AHL for a season. I mean, he was in the NHL for 25 games, but was mostly in Worcester.
Fear the Fin - NEEDS MORE DOVES
But what you’re saying is, OHL route, you go to the NHL then can be sent to the AHL whenever after your time in the NHL
Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker
One of the best moments in Giants history, 11/1/2010
Not exactly – if you’re junior aged, then you have to stick in the NHL or go down to juniors unless the player has played four seasons of juniors.
Also, juniors isn’t just the OHL – it’s also the WHL and QMJHL.
Fear the Fin - NEEDS MORE DOVES
Ohhhhh ok. So you have to be pretty damn good if you decide to go into juniors.
Yea, definitely knew they had WHL and QMJHL
Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker
One of the best moments in Giants history, 11/1/2010
Juniors has a draft like the NHL draft, just with 15 and 16 year olds. They also have trades and players living away from their families.
Basically, it’s a mini-NHL.
Fear the Fin - NEEDS MORE DOVES
Yeah, it is totally crazy that 15 year olds are already living away from home to play hockey

World Juniors is technically the under 20 tournament. So it’s mostly 18, 19, and 20 year olds. There’s another tournament for under 18s, but that isn’t as big.
Fear the Fin - NEEDS MORE DOVES
Got it, so those kids in World Juniors can get drafted by the NHL right?

maybe draft Tanner pearson?
Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker
One of the best moments in Giants history, 11/1/2010
Some are already drafted, I’d actually say most are.
And they could draft Pearson – he’s ranked 22nd overall, though, so he could be taken before the Sharks’ pick.
Fear the Fin - NEEDS MORE DOVES
huh, so if most are already drafted, how about Gusev? Forward from Russia
Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker
One of the best moments in Giants history, 11/1/2010
Nikita Gusev? He’s ranked 18th among European skaters. Could be a first rounder, could drop lower – Europeans tend to not be drafted that high because of the potential flight risk to the KHL.
Fear the Fin - NEEDS MORE DOVES
Oh I totally knew that was unintentional.

If you’re on a conditioning assignment, then you are technically on the active roster then must be listed as a scratch during games.
Niittymaki is on a conditioning assignment just to show other teams’ GMs that he can still play and he’s over his hip injury. Well, they didn’t explicitly state that, but the Sharks currently have 6 goalies in the NHL and AHL (Niemi, Greiss, Niittymaki, Sexsmith, Sateri, and THE MIGHTY STALOCK) and something has got to give.

I'm not a Cook fan, but I tend to hate the comedy community's automatic ragespite maneuver that said...
My usual response is, “So what that someone with broader appeal made it bigger.” My favorite comedian is Louis CK, and they had beef, and he really has nothing to complain about financially himself.

fact: this is the wrong way to analyze the Beatles
The Beatles are like the weather.
FYI
Every rock song you hear today is musically a rip off of a Beatles song
Quote from my adopted son Mike Krukow: "We're the Giants. We're San Francisco. And we're World Series Champions!"
Depends heavily on the parameters of “rock”.
My son, so I'm told. And this stalwart young lad (Hi, free f.p. #14!).
Touche
But you understand my point
Quote from my adopted son Mike Krukow: "We're the Giants. We're San Francisco. And we're World Series Champions!"
I totally do. But I also read “rip-off” as much closer than, say, “homage” or “reprisal”.
My son, so I'm told. And this stalwart young lad (Hi, free f.p. #14!).
Yah ripoff was maybe aggressive
Your words were better
Quote from my adopted son Mike Krukow: "We're the Giants. We're San Francisco. And we're World Series Champions!"
Early Rod's pretty rad though.
I wish he didn’t try to convince me of his sexiness. It cheapens the whole endeavor
Criteria here would be helpful.
If you’re talking musical quality/enjoyability, then you can have (and support) that opinion.
But in terms of impact on the history of pop music and rock and roll, etc. I’d put the Beatles at the top of that list.
Better to be a Giants fan than an Athletic supporter!
You are the first in an EXTREMELY long time to get the reference.
Though, I must guiltily admit I’ve come to love Metallica’s cover of the song in question more than the original.
Better to be a Giants fan than an Athletic supporter!
I'm not trying to toot my own horn here, but I know guitar based music pretty well
And honestly, I love proto metal way more than most headbangers.
That said, Metallica did some decent covers, but I tend not to care much for them beyond Ride the Lightning
I like this quote
“People are still looking at Picasso. People are still looking at artists who broke through the constraints of their time period to come up with something that was unique and original,” said Robert Greenfield, a former associate editor at Rolling Stone magazine who has written about the band. “In the form that they worked in, in the form of popular music, no one will ever be more revolutionary, more creative and more distinctive than The Beatles were.”
Quote from my adopted son Mike Krukow: "We're the Giants. We're San Francisco. And we're World Series Champions!"
This one right?
I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, ‘The Beatles did’.
Quote from my adopted son Mike Krukow: "We're the Giants. We're San Francisco. And we're World Series Champions!"

You could easily skip the first season, but I’m kind of glad I didn’t because it gets SO much better. Andy was funny in S1, but that’s about all.

You have to stay on the air in order to find your footing.
My son, so I'm told. And this stalwart young lad (Hi, free f.p. #14!).
Very few come out of the gate swinging.
Arrested Development, It’s Always Sunny (though they still added to their formula) and Louie are rare cases
Well, and MitM
but we need not go into that again. I still think it’s the progenitor of modern televised comedy, especially from the traditional sitcom format.

I just start people in season 2. It does a decent job of laying out all the characters still, and it only takes a little bit of explaining for them to know the necessary background. Officer Dave shows up early on, and even if they aren’t on board with the rest of the characters yet, everyone I’ve introduced to the show likes him.

Sorry baby, but I'm a one system man.
Definitely agreed on Sonic Adventure 1 and Grandia 2, though. Both great games. Power Stone was tons of fun, plus Jet Grind Radio, Phantasy Star Online, Rush 2049… Also Shenmue, though I never got to play that one, mahself.
Wasn’t a big fan of Evo, though. Too, uh, iterative for me. I wasn’t getting enough story or aesthetic expression out of the experience.

Crazy Taxi, Hydro Thunder… One could argue that with that and the 2K sports franchise it was the best arcade console ever.

Sega was just so godawful shitty at marketing and finances.
They ran themselves into the ground, though Sony gave them a helpful push.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
Sega kind of screwed itself during the 32-bit era, while Sony was slowly building up as a gaming juggernaut. By the time the Dreamcast came out, Playstation was synonymous with gaming, and the average person was waiting for the PS2.

Skies of Arcadia in terms of art direction is one of my favorite games ever.
The design team had a really clear sense of aesthetic, and they really suited the game to that style. The music is great (I own the 2 CD soundtrack), there are memorable locales, they had some interesting mechanics, the ship battles were really something novel and interesting, and it all tied together very well. Plus, you get a Suikoden-style base-building endgame sidequest to look forward to. I thin Grandia 2 had a slightly more memorable story and combat, but SoA was really one of the best things to come out of the Dreamcast.
When I got a PS3 in December, I made sure that Valkyria Chronicles, SoA’s spiritual successor, was one of my very first purchases, but I probably won’t get to it for some time. Definitely looking forward to it, though.

Yeah. My understanding of Grandia Xtreme was that the battle system was the only thing Xtreme about it, and the rest was a buggy piece of crap. As for Grandia 3, combat was fun of course (though not as good as 2), and the story was okay, but it was too short and ended really abruptly. It lacked any of the catharsis and charm of 2.
I’d forgotten how good 2 was. Man.

KH1 had worlds to explore. KH2’s worlds were way, way, way too tiny.
Though the old-timey level was a master stroke IMO.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
yeah that was the best part of the game
the rest were all bland. i hated how after people complained about the poor camera in the platforming aspects of the first one, they just dumped all the platforming altogether, instead of fixing the camera.

Shining Force 3
Star Ocean: The Second Story
Final Fantasy 6
Skies of Arcadia
Super Mario RPG
Grandia 2
Final Fantasy 10
Suikoden 3
Ogre Battle 64
And it’s probably a long drop between 9 and 10, but for now I’ll say Skyrim.

I also appreciated the fact that the heroes weren’t the typical emo JRPG protagonists with dark pasts.
It was a game that was generally upbeat, which as you say was a nice change of pace, but it also knew how to be darker and more challenging emotionally.
They gave you a reason to care about the characters. Unlike, say… FF12.
But then, I’ve always been a fan of brighter RPGS – SoA, SMRPG, FF10. So maybe I’m biased.

I never finished Skies of Arcadia because my game had a glitch where it would lock up during the penultimate boss fight. That really sucked. I haven’t gone back to the game since.
that happened ot me during Legend of Dragoon
mediocre game but I wanted the sense of completion. Game locked up every time I got to the first boss on Disc 4.

"I hate to compare. You can’t compare. It’s so hard to compare," Harbaugh said. "You’re talking 15 or 16 years ago, my goodness. It’s like baseball. Who’s the greatest baseball player of all time? It’s such a tough argument. I like to say Willie Mays, but you have other people that’ll say Babe Ruth, because of what he did in his era. That he had more home runs than any other baseball player, than some other teams hit at that time. He was hitting 65 and other teams were hitting nine. It’s really tough to make comparisons. I think Willie Mays, too. Don’t you, Art? Five-tool player."
…
"They’ve got a heck of an argument in Babe Ruth. Maybe that’s a discussion for another time."
But Harbaugh didn’t stop there. After his meeting with the media, Harbaugh spotted wide receiver Kyle Williams in the lunch room. He then asked Williams, who’s the son of White Sox general manager Kenny Williams about who the best baseball player of all-time is.
A commenter says he was dissing SF Examiner columnist Art Spander for picking the Saints on Saturday.

They won a World Series so it's pretty dumb to say that they've wasted anything,
but, I do often argue that the Giants aren’t making the best of their “pitching window”, propping up the stellar arms they have with an offense intentionally geared for average. Okay, fine. Maybe I use stronger terms than “aren’t making the best”… maybe I mean they are wasting their pitching window. Okay, maybe I’m no better than this article.
How ‘bout instead of saying that the Giants are wasting the best years of Lincecum’s career (since they did kinda win a WS during his peak), it would be more accurate to say that the Giants are wasting a small upcoming window where the Giants know they have good starters signed (before free agency takes away our best toys).

I’m willing to see how 2012 works out before I apply the term “waste” to the window, just because of the horriffic luck of 2011. If they don’t solve the problem this year, they will lose Tim, anyway, seems to me.
2012 is going to be awesome!
2009 felt wasteful, too.
I mean, the offense has been perfectly dreadful for 6 of the past 7 years. But, yeah, it seems like the Giants have maybe this season and next to possibly make another run with these particular arms.
One of the partners here is a big Red Sox fan
and told me that he blocked the Bagwell trade out of his mind.

NO CHEATING
The player who holds the record for most stolen bases in a season without being caught is…?

Beltran?
I know his success rate was/is really high.

Not Beltran
Although Beltran did steal 28 bases without getting caught in his half-season as an Astro, which would be the record if he’d done it over a full season.
Unfortunately, he was caught 3 times in Kansas City that year.

I know it’s a Molina, but I can never remember which one.

Why would you think it is a Molina?

Nein. Jackie Never had a season where he wasn't caught.
Willie did, but he only stole 6 that year.

Actually, I guess since this is a "in the entire history of baseball" type of question, it might not be that easy.
So a hint for those not cheating: It’s an active player. A really good one.

Davey is close
He had a season with 15 steals and no CS.
I’ll hint that the record is in some way related to Lopes though, so you’re on the right track.

You got it!
Yes, indeed, it is Mr. Utley, a man who I consider one of the most underrated players in all of baseball.
In 2009 Utley stole 23 bases without a single caught stealing, breaking the old record of 21 set by Kevin McReynolds in 1988.
