Leaning Arnold here, but could be convinced otherwise.

Holy crap Otero is old. He turns 27 before spring training starts. He’s only 4 months younger than Matt Cain. He’s 10 months older than Pablo Sandoval.

He’s 5 months younger than Brett Pill. Holy crap Brett Pill is old.

Brett Pill is older than Matt Cain! Matt Cain has been pitching for the Giants since 1987!*

Of the names on the list

Tomlinson, Heston, DeJesus, Otero, Rodriguez, big glut of low-minors relief pitchers that I have no idea how to rank.

Seth Rosin can hit the side of a barn with a baseball. From space.

Fuentes

I guess he goes after Rodriguez, but I’m not convinced of that.

That’s about where I am as well. Youngish athletic and some sock in his bat anyway. Rodriguez first though.

Heston's a starter.

Which is why he gets put above DeJesus

If he were a 24 year old reliever in Hi-A he would not beat Otero even though Otero’s much older. He wouldn’t beat a lot of the guys on the list, like Arnold or Marlowe, because they’re flamethrowers and he’s a sinkerballer.

RafRod

he’s okay I guess…sort of….this is getting tough now.

/evan tepid seal of approval.

I'm a Giants Fan, but I'll always be rooting for Matt Downs

Pretty much. I don’t pretend to know how to distinguish among all the very-far-away pitchers, but I’d rather have Rodriguez just on the slim chance that he might figure things out eventually. Also TINSTAAP.

When do we stop? because in my oppinion, i think once we get to around number 35, no one will know who they are voting for.

History dictates we go to 44.

My first vote in a while

And it was between Rafrod and DeJesus. Both are young and have a lot of upside; that RafRod survived A-ball as an 18 year old without striking out too much gives me the edge. It’s not really necessary that he be good now to find a successful comp for him. Hopefully he gets promoted to the Cal league and puts something together.

Welcome back. We need some optimism among all these cynics!

Thanks!

Glad to know I beat the optimism drum here as I lean towards cynicism in all things outside of baseball.

Been really busy with a move to NY, then back to Cali, and now trying to start a furniture business and move back to NY. Eck.

Tomlinson

Because, um, I don’t really know any of these other guys besides Otero and RafRod. I figure at least Tomlinson plays a position of need.

by taliesin on Jan 19, 2012 2:59 PM PST reply actions

We still have half a dozen guys who were drafted ahead of Tomlinson but aren’t on the list. His good showing in the Arizona League was better than not having a good showing, but I can’t see how it’s enough to vault him that far up.

A question for Evan

if you would indulge me: what order are these four on your list?
Tomlinson, Christian Diaz, Kentrell Hill, Jean Delgado.

I mean, Shawn Payne’s already up there, and he was a 35th rounder.

I’d go Delgado, Diaz, Tomlinson, Hill. I do believe in respecting draft order until players do something exceptional to distinguish themselves one way or another — e.g., Hill being severely outhit by Tomlinson at the same level at nearly the same age. How do you have them?

Delgado’s k/w numbers at age 18 are eye-catching, now that I look.

It’s certainly possible we jumped the gun on Payne. He’ll need to move fast or his stock will drop in a hurry. But I’d guess that a small-college player like Payne has a better chance at being an overlooked diamond in the rough than a Big 12 star.
