Oh man, I wish I were going to Spring Training
@legaleagle88
I'm not crazy. My mother had me tested.
I’m really considering taking my birthday week off and going because, you know, baseball.
Is it February 19 yet?
The way things are shaping up at work, I think I might be able to go, actually.

I keep telling myself I’ll go, and then I don’t. I wanted to this year, but got roped into a girls’ weekend in Vegas at the end of the month instead. It would be unseemly to ditch the family for another few days just a month or two after that. Poop.

My problem is money. I even have a niece who lives in Surprise who could put us up. Just wish the hubby would get a damn job.
2012 is going to be awesome!
I'm going.
Had to book it a year in advance to get a place (exchange of my timeshare). I’ll be there in the beginning of March. Still trying to figure out the schedule to go visit most of the ballparks.

Flickr is far more sophisticated than Photobucket, but the general principles are the same.
However, you can select different resolutions for images, and the website’s engine has a built-in model for allowing users to select a Creative Commons license for their work if they so choose, which makes it more of a photo-sharing database, rather than just a place for storage.

He would've been a perfectly cromulent 4th outfielder, perhaps,
or an option should Pagan go down with injury or Gregor doesn’t pan out or gets hurt. He would’ve provided depth.
he would've been a all-star had the Giants not messed up his swing!

There’s nothing to hate on. He’s been mostly terrible. The problem is that even when he’s been not mostly terrible the gulf between the performance and the contract is too great. He was never going to “succeed” with that deal, and not even coming close to matching the numbers isn’t that big a surprise, either, it’s just disappointing and frustrating for a lot of reasons.
Please allow me to amend.

Scan to the 30:30 mark to hear Neukom discuss it.
Scan to the 16:37 mark to hear Sabean discuss signing Renteria and the method of evaluation. LOL
Bill Neukom in 2009 on Inside the Clubhouse:
Well, Bill James is one source of information for us…but just one. And these guys(Sabean and Bochy) probably blend five and six sources of information about these players. And they have some of their own formulas that create statistics that they think are helpful in judging how these players might contribute as part of our 25 man roster. So the reality of the world is that there is a enormous amount of statistics about baseball, and their accessible to everybody. You don’t have to buy books, it’s on the internet to a large extent. And I think Brian’s guys, Jeremy Shelley, Yeshayah Goldfarb are two of the brightest analysts you could hope to have. Jeremy has been with us for fifteen years. There’s always this talk about the crunching going on across the bay, we’ve been crunching here ever since Jeremy came with us. And the best part of it is, that they’re baseball guys. They’re not just numbers geeks. We heard them for three days say to Bruce and say to Brian, this guys not worth it….
November 4, 2010
He’s(Yeshayah Goldfarb) part of a team that collects scouting reports, statistics, video and other data about many players, some that the Giants might want to acquire. He then performs intense analytics, but as second-year owner Bill Neukom told an MLB.com reporter, "These are not just crunchers who give you some funny numbers. They know the game, love the game and have an opinion, and they stand up to Brian and the scouts."
…
When Neukom was holding the World Series trophy and giving a victory speech on TV in Arlington, Texas, on Nov. 1, he immediately praised "Brian Sabean and his core of people." That core consists of VP of player personnel Dick Tidrow, VP of baseball operations Bobby Evans, and analysts Jeremy Shelley and Goldfarb.
"They deserve a lot of credit for burning the midnight oil all the way through the midseason," Neukom told MLB.com. "They looked at hundreds of possibilities of ways to reinforce this team. And they obviously found some good ones."
Goldfarb said he and his cohorts focus on taking a mountain of statistics and data and "putting it into a simple, understandable format for people that need the information."
Goldfarb said he usually works more than 60 hours a week, and he travels a lot, too, and that he’s "always on call." Though he usually doesn’t travel to Giants’ road games…

I skimmed (that’s what I do, sorry) through the 2009 film the other day on Netflix. Noomi Rapace is arresting, though I did like Rooney Mara. I imagine that if I had carefully sat through the original, I would prefer it to the 2011 film. As it is, my initial impression is that the 2009 film was not as slick a cinematic experience as the English-language one with the big budget and big-name director.

The blog Wear Sherlock goes through and finds the source of almost all the costumes/props on the show.
This is the entry for the Sherlock coat:
Belstaff ‘Millford style’ coat.
Worn by Sherlock in series 1 & 2 and wanted by every fangirl/boy in the world.
Pure Irish wool tweed bonded with a sophisticated, ultra-light microporous film, to make it waterproof without altering the natural qualities of comfort and breathability.
£1,350 / $2,188 Available at Belstaff’s Conduit Street store in London.
Not available online.
BONUS FACTS: Belstaff originally discontinued the coat, but after the sucess of Sherlock and the amount of enquiries they had about it they bought it back into production and issued this press release on their website.
As with most of the clothing used in television shows, there are two back-ups of Sherlock’s coat in case one is damaged or lost during filming. That’s £4,050 worth of costume budget gone on just Sherlock’s coat.
The red button hole on the coat was added in by the costume department.

Natto you might want to try looking at some of the vintage stores in SF. Last time we were there my wife was looking for a vintage handbag and mink shawl, we ended up going to the ones in the Haight, and there is also one near Union square. Anyway I saw a couple of Sherlock-ish coats, probably still going to cost a few hundred dollars though.

It just seemed like a slavish adaption of the book (which I haven’t read), whereas the Fincher version was much more filmic.

Truthfully, I don’t really begrudge her. At least not totally. She works way more than I do, so there is that.
But I’m really annoyed that she majored in biology, was applying to ostensibly biochemistry departments, and is interested in a bunch of professors that are really hardcore chemistry in nature and that I would want to post-doc for—except I’d never have a shot of post-doc’ing for them unless I do spectacular things in the next couple of years.

Dave Dombrowski: Okay, so the main guys are in place, pretty much. For the minor-league filler, we have some good organizational guys we can talk about. There’s a pitcher, Kenny Faulk, we’d be willing to give up.
Jack Zduriencik: Yeah, our scouts gave me a report on him. It’s a start.
Dave Dombrowski: Now, I know you’re the one selling here, but we’ve had an awful time keeping our middle infielders healthy down in the low minors. We had to put a guy who was a college first baseman at short … total nightmare. Could you throw in a non-prospect for us? A second baseman, maybe?
Jack Zdurienck: Yeah, I know just the guy. Shaver Hansen. He’s 23 and in A-ball, so he’s not a top prospect, but he knows what he’s doing.
Dave Dombrowski: Great. So we’ll start with Fister/Faulk, Shaver/Furbush and move on from there.
Mrs. Zdurienck: Jack, can I see you for a second?
Jack Zdurienck: Yeah, honey. I didn’t know you picked up the line. I’ll be right there.

Oh, I didn’t write this, it was from Grant’s Trade Deadline MLB Power Rankings write-up for Baseball Nation.
This thing is full of gems:
Sandy Alderson: Beltran for Wheeler. Glad you came around on this.
Brian Sabean: I hate parting with a good young arm, but that’s the price of business, I guess.
Sandy Alderson: Yep. And you got your guy. Proven veteran. Battle tested.
Brian Sabean: You know, I’ve always resented that stereotype. Yes, I’ve acquired veterans in my day, but are you willing to part with David Wright?
Sandy Alderson: No.
Brian Sabean: Of course not. He’s young, he’s the face of your franchise. He’s not someone I can go out and get. By default, the players I can get are going to trend towards older players. That’s just how it works. They’re the ones other teams will give up. They’re the ones close to free agency and …
Thirty minutes later
Brian Sabean: … sure, it’s my cross to bear, I realize that. And you’d think my championship would be vindicating … but it’s like it never happened. It’s like the formula worked in spite of me, not because of me. When a man’s life, his work, his accomplishments are reduced to a caricature of a veteran-loving simpleton, I can’t tell you …
Thirty minutes later
Brian Sabean: …it’s like the Aeschylus quote: “It is an easy thing for one whose foot is on the outside of calamity to give advice and to rebuke the sufferer.” That’s always running through my head when I’m …
Sandy Alderson: Look, I have to get going, Brian … I have another call. Thanks for working with me, though.
Brian Sabean: I appreciate your ear. You’re a true friend, Sandy.
Two days later
Chris Antonetti: Hey, Brian, how’s it going?
Brian Sabean: HEY, CHRIS, Y’ALL GOT A SHORTSTOP WITH VETERAN EXPERIENCE WHO IS A VETERAN? WE NEED ONE OF THOSE, TWO IF YOU HAVE THEM, THREE WOULD BE BEST.

Old stuff.
Kidding. They have this sweet cathedral. This nifty street, which I promise you have seen in quite a few films. The Cow Tower and Dragon Hall. An impressive castle that has unfortunately been turned into a mall. It doesn’t rain there, and the weather is quite pleasant, in contrast to pretty much the rest of England. TONS of wonderful rural scenery. You can ride around on a boat across the Broads.
I dunno. Lots of good pubs and eateries. It’s more that it’s charming and no one gets to see it. I’ve been all over England, and Norwich is probably my favorite place there.
Liverpool is also pretty fun, but you have to be in the mood to party.

The A’s are trying to blackmail the league by not playing to win until they get a chance to move, the Raiders might move to Santa Clara or Los Angeles in a few years, and now the Warriors are trying to move to San Francisco. It’s not right.

Woa, wait, what? I know the niners are moving to Santa Clara, raiders i had no idea they had any intention to move anywhere. Warriors moving to San Francisco makes sense since they play in the oldest arena in the NBA. In my opinion, i hope they don’t lose the loyal fans that show up in Oakland if they move to SF… but moving in next to ATT would be sweet

stadiums are and have always been huge boondoggle. They always cost more to build, never produce the revenue they’re supposed to bring in, and the city/county always losses millions in the end. The only benefit right now is it provides jobs for a few years (which is a big deal in this economy but still not worth it)

Yeah, that’s more or less Kiper’s rationale. He’ll be the receiver Edwards wasn’t. He’s a big target who can post up in the red zone, which is obviously an area for improvement for the Niners.

here:
Upgrading at wide receiver makes sense for the 49ers. The team used the 10th pick of the 2009 draft on Michael Crabtree. Otherwise, the 49ers have invested very little draft capital in the position recently. They used sixth-round picks for Ronald Johnson (2011), Kyle Williams (2010) and Josh Morgan (2008). Before that, they used third-rounders for Jason Hill (2007) and Brandon Williams (2006). Those are the only receivers San Francisco has chosen in the last six drafts. Under a best-case scenario, the 49ers would re-sign Morgan, who is out for the season with an injury. They would also upgrade the position through the draft.

Hasn’t Flacco already done that? They have won quite a bit since he’s been there. We don’t see Willis calling out Alex Smith or anything- teams should have nothing but support for their man. If you don’t think he’s up to it, you keep it to yourself but don’t tell the whole world

Flacco is tied with the most road play off wins in HISTORY. And he’s only been playing for 3 years.

plain and simple
he’s pretty MEH in the playoffs
Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker

THREE YEARS
This is the first time he’s even had a home game! How many QB’s make it to the superbowl within 3 years? Even Aaron Rodgers took 3 years (as a starter) to get to a Superbowl, and he sat out for his first 3 years.
Brandon Crawford: Yeah, but check out that Defense!
Lars Bet: 1st HoF: Bonds > Clemens
Either way, he’s been eh, in the playoffs thus far, that’s truth. Got to believe some of that is Cam Camerons fault… but he’s pretty mediocre in the playoffs, doesn’t need to be a stud though

5-3 in the play offs.
4-3 on the road (meaning he has a winning record when they are underdogs). 2 of his 3 losses came in Pitt, the other in Indi. I’d consider that an impressive resume.
Brandon Crawford: Yeah, but check out that Defense!
Lars Bet: 1st HoF: Bonds > Clemens
I’m talking STATS not wins/losses, much of that has to do with the defense.

Yeah I guess his career post season QB rating is 66.
Pretty Poor. They’ve only lost to teams that made the superbowl. But I guess that’s what happens when you make it deep in the play offs, so that shouldn’t be a surprise.
Brandon Crawford: Yeah, but check out that Defense!
Lars Bet: 1st HoF: Bonds > Clemens
nah, i mean, he can be a GREAT quarterback if he had a better OC, Line, Receivers. He’s just inconsistent, and what you said is pretty typical though, lose against teams that go to the superbowl, basically the best team in the AFC

Flacco was supposed to be an Eli Manning type QB, the franchise guy who could carry the offense on his shoulders and he’s never been that. Throws too many bad passes at the wrong time. Also, the Ravens have been good enough since he’s been there that they could have made the Superbowl at any point but didn’t and so it falls on Flacco

Gonna cost a bit of money to keep Goldson now i think. Whitner is signed, but one is FS, the other SS… But if they do part with Goldson they should be on the lookout for another Safety, even draft one possibly.

I’m not familiar with whether converting free to strong safties works or not, but that might be an avenue.

trade Larry Grant for a big-play WR. Its an area of talent surplus
improve the FS or SS
improve the o-line with one addition
maybe get another CB?

They’ll probably draft somebody for the O-line, check out Kiilgore

Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker

I’ll bet Grant is worth a bundle. He filled in really nicely for Willis, and big fast interior linebackers who can tackle are always in demand.
I’d check out Chilo before Kilgore, but I was thinking more of a long-term o-line solution so Snyder doesn’t have to keep moving around.
I like Culliver, he’s mostly a nickel back though which is fine. Rogers will stay, no doubt. I’d be nice to have a faster CB to complement Brown, agreed.
What if Grant was shifted from ILB to OLB so the linebacker corp would be Aldon-Bowman-Willis-Grant? is that doable?

by giant4life83 on Jan 18, 2012 11:55 PM PST up reply actions
yea… but you’re basing that off of a few starts, he’s great at spot starting, athletic, definitely someone i’d hold onto, and if you look down a bit the niners could be projected to draft Alshon Jeffery, 6’4 230 WR from South Carolina.
Chilo, plain and simple, just isn’t good, if you go back to the Baltimore game, he gave up a ton of those sacks, they gave up 9? Chilo gave up a load. They could go after a veteran for sure, Snyder could be a backup at C/Guard.
Culliver is the fastest and could be the most physical corner the niners have. Look for him to matchup with Nicks.
Eh, you might be onto something there, not totally sure. Have to see how good he is at pass rushing and coverage. Like i said, he’s a damn good spot starter and can come in on a down or two and there’d be no production fall off from the ILB postion
Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker

Chilo sucks, and may have cost the Niners that Baltimore game with his stupid chop block, not to mention all the Swarms of Suggs™ he let in the house as well.
Jeffery looks good, I just hope he has good hands. Sick of all the drops since Ginn had to become a receiver. and at his size, if he has real good speed I don’t know why he isn’t going higher in the draft.

Yea, me too. He looks pretty damn good, just hope he uses that size to his advantage in the NFL. Ginn, you can tell, they don’t really have him do anything but slants and out routes. I think Jeffery isn’t going higher is because of his production? not totally sure, but that’s something to watch as we get closer to the draft

There’s no question as to the comment it refers to based on the reference of “arrogant” later on. It isn’t general. I am not extremely enthused by “indignant complaining about sportswriters being biased”; I also
think:
A. Indignant complaining about “indignant complaining about sportswriters being biased” is as irritating as the sources; and
B. Think that perhaps calling something an “arrogant article” isn’t exactly deserving of getting the "STOP COMPLAINING card.
I don’t think there’s a personal bias going on, but that’s the comment the reply was to.

On the West Coast….it’s always that time. It’s been kinda funny to listen to the hockey coach Boudreau… he got fired from the Washington team and is now in Anaheim. He has been amazed at what west coast teams put up with:
They travel more than east coast teams and they don’t have as much time to practice. “off days” are generally spent in travel not practice.
His players don’t get the recognition they deserve. His goaltender had some crazy game the other day with like 109 saves in a period and got no love on the highlights.

Manning has had the sort of season that’s left people saying he, and not Brady, is now the most clutch quarterback in the league.
No one has said that. No one. And judging by the passive voice here, Ms. Howard doesn’t want to be the first.
And this
The Giants also have Coughlin, their been-there/done-that 65-year-old head coach, who has a proven knack for putting together the sort of giant-killing game plans that always give the Giants a chance to roll into wherever they play and steal out of town with another win.
is just straight-up terrible writing.

Giants 2010 vs. Niners 2011-2012 parallels
1) Misfits becoming heroes (Alex Smith, Carlos Rogers, Whitner = Huff, Ross, Burrell)
2) Legitimate stars carrying pitching staff/defense (Willis, Justin Smith, Goldson = Lincecum, Cain, Wilson)
3) Enigmatic player puts it together (Sanchez = Davis)
4) Rookies/Young players emerging as stars (Aldon Smith, Bowman = Posey, Bumgarner)
5) Shitty deals with no impact (Edwards=Guillen)
6) Beat a team from the South in dramatic fashion in the 1st round of the playoffs (Saints=Braves)
7) Hyped East coast team in the division/league championship (Giants=Phillies)

and yeah the defense is MUCH improved, AND the size of the team is going up. They are actually looking like just a small college team instead of a high school team, or a few planets orbiting around Omar Samhan.

That is way funnier than it should be.
