This is big fucking news
A .332 BABIP vs a career average of .299 will get you a ton of high choppers through the infield.
Aubrey Huff: "My body is ripped."
I'm not a huge fan of the Melk man.
But hitters have more control over their BABIP than pitchers do, and a .33 point swing isn’t absurd, nor is a .332 BABIP completely outlandish. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him settle into the .315 range, which would make him one of 60 or 70 hitters to be that high. I think his years of .270 BABIPs were because of poor luck and poor fat.

His OPS will be no higher than .750 range next season. Bet on it. We’ll all be asking the question, why trade for a guy who hits just as well as Nate Schierholtz but without the plus defense, and takes playing time away from Brandon Belt?

To get rid of Sanchez?
Probably for complaining about having to compete for the 5th spot with Zito.
There is no other reason why I can think of they would want to get rid of him. They didn’t save money on the trade. He has a motivation to perform well to get his value up for free agency. He would have been pitching in a non-hitters ball park, facing weaker lineups in the N.L. West and no DH’s. He also would have had a great pitching coach who knows a lot about him in Dave Righetti who could assist him.

Not to mention that Melky will almost ceratinly walk away from the team as a free agent this offseason – with no comp picks for the Giants. Sabes traded Sanchez for 1 season Melky – rather than trade Sanchez for minor league prospects that would cost the Giants pennies on the dollar and using the $6M salary to pay a large chunk of the money to re-sign Beltran. If Sabes had traded both Dirty and Andres for minor leaguers, he could have used the $10.85M+ that are now going to Melky and Pagan to keep Beltran in the fold.
Who would you rather have in the OF this season –
Beltran, Gregor Blanco (or Tyler Graham or Justin Christian), and Nate
or
Melky, Pagan, and Nate?
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner

But hitters have more control over their BABIP than pitchers do, and a .33 point swing isn’t absurd
When you’ve got may more plate appearances at a level other than that, I’d say that it makes me at least a little skeptical.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
My understanding of BABIP is related to strenght of hitter
Something about more line drives coming faster off bats, scooting through holes in INF more often. I could be wrong.
Pablo’s BABIP in ML service time
08- . 356
09- .350
10 – .291 (fat panda time)
11- .320
Melky is no Pablo, but it is not unreasonable to think his BABIP can not be 10-20 points over 300. His walk and K rates are practicaly identical, 7.2 v 7.4 BB and 12.0 v 12.9 with both being favorable edge to Melky.
No reason for me to think he is not a 2 WAR player with 4 WAR upside. Nate put up about a 2 WAR pace last year when playing, Melky is at least an upgrade over him, with the option to use Nate more often if Huff stinks again, or as a great PHth OF.

Barry Bonds had a career BABIP is .285. He was not a weak hitter.
There is something about BABIP that has to do with hit types, though.
I also don’t think it’s clear that Melky is an upgrade over Schierholtz. Nate’s defense is quite good.

a .33 [sic] point swing isn’t absurd
I would emphasize that his 2011 BABIP was not a .033 point swing. The .299 career average includes his 2011 .332 BABIP. It’s in there.
His career average BABIP without that season was .290. It was nearly a .045 swing from what could have been expected at the start of last season.

Some measure of regression should be expected, honestly.
.310 I could buy if he truly is “in the best shape of his life.” But he almost certainly won’t be a 4 WAR player again. If he’s worth 2 wins, I guess I will refrain from throwing shit.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
I mean, at this point, you may as well just bet on the .299, since that’s his average now, or fudge it a little up or down from that depending on your opinion of him as a player. I just wanted to be clear about how big of a swing his 2011 season was. To follow a swing, you have the keep the starting point in mind.

"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
Not a ton of money for any of the 3, but the $6M for Melky is worryinly hihg to me. I guessed the following numbers for these 3 guys in my “Figuring Out the Giants 2012 Payroll” fanpost from about a month ago:
Melky=$4.5M, Pagan=$4.5M, Casilla=$2M
The fact that the actual numbers are all higher than my liberal guesses doesn’t seem to bode well for the upcoming Pablo and Timmy awards. If Melky is worth $6M, then how is Panda not worth $10M? That’s certainly the line I would be taking right now if I were Panda’s agent.
As for Pagan, it looks like Andres Torres will probably be playing for about $1.5M less than Pagan in 2012. I’m not sure that Pagan gives the Giants that much more worth. Not to mention the fact that, and this is the worst part of the trades for Mleky and Pagan, the odds that both Pagan and Melky will be walking away from SF as free agents this coming offseason seems close to 100% – and the Giants will not receive any compensation draft picks for either guy. To clarify, due to the changes in the new CBA, .there are no more Type A or Type B free agents. The only free agents that teams will receive comp draft picks for are players that the team offers a minimum 1 year contract to at a salary that is at least equivalent to the top 125 players in the game by the middle of November each offseason. Using 2011 salary figures, that means that the Giants would have to offer Pagan and Melky salaries above $14M then have each turn the offer down and sign a FA contract with another team in order to receive any comp picks for them. Barring a truly miraculous offensive season by Melky or Pagan, the Giants aren’t going to be tending them salary offers that are over $10M this offseason.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
I think they underpaid him.
I’m not sure that $22M is an overpay at this very moment (2012), given the market, but it’s very clear that Lincecum is in decline, so, beyond this year, he’ll very likely be a significant overpay.
I'd say it's statistically very clear he HAS declined from his Cy peak.
But he’s still way too young to confidently project a similar path going forward.

Cain's WAR has been increasing
And just looking at fWAR, Cain and Madbum had better years that Tim last year.
I think Fangraphs said Tim’s Cy years were worth 30 mil on open market, last year was worth about 20 mil.
All contracts need to go between risk of injury and\or further decline vs can Tim get to his Cy level again or is he not going to do worse than last year?
I don’t know what to think, but as a fan, I hope they lock him up for 4-6 and live with any risk of decline or injury.

"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
Not really what? Overpay?
Then that means every single team overpays to avoid going to arbitration. Overpaying is still overpaying.
by Every6thDay on Jan 17, 2012 10:09 AM PST up reply actions
Ostensibly, the figure is somewhere close to the midpoint of the figures exchange by the Giants and the players.
This really does happen all the time. That you characterize it as an overpay is a value judgment that is frankly irrelevant to dealmaking.
The Giants have at least until the beginning of February, perhaps even mid-February, to get a deal done. The deals probably wouldn’t be happening this quickly unless A) the negotiations were easy, or B) they are ceding a bit of ground on players who will not be with the team next year so they can spend more time building the right offer for Cain.
Either way, I’m not going to complain about it. I think $6M is too much for Cabrera, but sources had him making as much as $7M no it’s not like this is unexpected.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
I don’t have them offhand, but it was a number that was thrown around last year.
Again, it’s on the high side, but for a guy of Cabrera’s production last, in his last year before arbitration, it’s not unexpected. He’s getting paid what Cody Ross got paid in a comparable arb year.

Let’s not forget that at the time the trade was made, the problem with it was not that the Giants could never catch up but that the Giants already had the division in the bag.
That has nothing to do with my argument though.

This is not “crying over spilt prospects.” This is a pitcher I saw pitch several times. I am not the best scout, but he was very good for his age and level. And, we are being told by at least one expert that he would still be the number 1 prospect in the Giants entire system. Not number 1 pitching prospect, number 1 prospect.
Could he fail to pan out? Absolutely. But, given his current value, I don’t think it’s crazy to be irritated by the trade.

I think a lot of Tommy’s value comes with how well he did in the Cal League at such a young age. Also, he looks like he’s about 40, so I could see where people get confused. He was like the 2nd youngest player in the Cal League last year.

That type of value is nearly impossible to replace without a significant cost in dollars and/or prospects. Since the Giants appear to be in “money meet mattress” mode and the prospect cupboard is bare, I just don’t see the sense in letting them walk.

Well, I’m not saying that Wheeler WILL become a viable starter, that the Giants starting rotation WILL crumble under the weight of lost pieces, or that both WILL happen at the same time. Only that a worse case scenario than what’s already happened may still conceivably come to pass.
Hopefully, the Giants retain the three big pieces long-term. A part of me really believes they will (my optimistic side). Another part worries that those big three will cut by third within three years, giving the Giants precious little time to develop something in the farm that isn’t already gestating there. But at least we’ll have the Cain money to put toward a couple of back-end starters on the free agent market. (My pessimistic side.)

They totally fuck with my sense of direction (which was poor to begin with) and all the space and high ceilings give me vertigo.
A couple of years ago we had to stop at a Wal-Mart while visiting New Orleans, and there was this weird empty space in the middle of the store where they had taken down a display and hadn’t put up a new one yet. When we passed it I seriously had to look away and let my wife guide me, because looking at it made me dizzy and queasy.
Pretty weird, I know. I have no idea why this is the case.

A few years ago we bought a TV from Costco, and kept it for maybe 2 years until something blew out. We returned it, without a receipt or anything, and they gave us full value. In fact, the prices in TVs had gone down, so we got a new TV, plus $500 back.

I’ve talked with Baron and Merope about it. Here is info about group tickets. I think Baron was interested in the “Baseball & BBQ” option. (Turkey Mikes BBQ is good. I love the potato salad.)
The SJ box office people are awesome, so I’m sure they could help us figure out the best way to do a group outing for whatever size we end up with.

Is this gonna be girls only?
That would be fun, but how will I make my husband stay home?

I know how arbitrations works
I just find it funny that we will be paying Santiago Casilla and Melky Cabrera and Santiago Casilla as much as the Red Sox will be paying Ellsbury.
The Red Sox avoided arbitration with center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury on a deal worth $8.05MM, tweets MLBTR’s Ben-Nicholson-Smith.

Pendulum Arbitration refers to a determination in industrial disputes where an arbitrator has to resolve a claim between a trade union and management by making a determination of which of the two sides has the more reasonable position. The arbitrator must choose only between the two options, and cannot split the difference or select an alternative position. It was initiated in Chile in 1979.

If you’re listening to the KNBR audio track – at least on my copy of the set – of, um…I think it’s Game 3, around the 6th or 7th inning, the weirdest thing happens.
Suddenly, in the middle of the inning, the audio cuts out for a moment. Then, a station ID/promo for the Rangers radio broadcast plays. Then a station ID/promo for NKBR. Then, it switches to the ESPN radio broadcast, with Jon Miller and Joe Morgan calling the action. After the inning ends, the audio track goes back to normal, playing the KNBR feed.
What makes it especially weird is that the set doesn’t even include the ESPN radio feed except for that weird little glitch.

I think it’s silly to be all “I wish we had done something different” in a year that, for all intents and purposes, went exactly the way we could have possibly hoped. Zito pitching instead of Sanchez? Maybe Zito isn’t able to put up the 4.05 postseason ERA that Sanchez had.

Jon Heyman May 6, 2011:
And let’s not forget GM Brian Sabean wouldn’t surrender a top young pitcher such as Madison Bumgarner last year, even for Toronto’s Jose Bautista, who was on his way to a home-run title when the Giants appeared to most need power and Bautista had two years to go before free agency. As it turns out, Sabean made the right call, of course, as Bumgarner helped pitch them to a World Series title.

I’m not sold on him being a great hitter. But again, that’s just me.

Well, at this point he has done it for about 2.25 seasons. And my comment was more of a point that your argument against him was an argument for him. You can not be sold, but you said didn’t give any reasons why you wouldn’t be in favor of this. It would be like saying
In conclusion, my client was seen fleeing the crime, had previously argued with and threatened the victim, and was found with the murder weapon.

1) I think 31 is the age when the power numbers start to go
2) Two crazy years as in not trustworthy enough to give a guy a 4 year contract at $14 AAV.

Torres had a good year and a half and it’s still to be seen whether he can continue. He is also the exception to the rule.
Pitchers have a stronger chance of being good as they gain more experience and learn more pitches.
Also, the comment was focused more about power hitters. I think the stats are a lot skewed by the steroid era.

2012 is going to be awesome!
1. Agreed. It prolong’s one career but that doesn’t mean that they get good earlier.
2. he is an exception to the general rule (as Bautista may be). Most hitters don’t find power at age 30. Also, one good year does not make a good player make (Aurila had his crazy year at age 29 and JT had a great year at age 36).

Cool
Do not try to look up “Internet Censorship” or “SOPA” or “PIPA” on Wikipedia, the giant online encyclopedia, on Wednesday.
SOPA and PIPA are two bills in Congress meant to stop the illegal copying and sharing of movies and music on the Internet, but major Internet companies say the bills would put them in the impossible position of policing the online world.
Wikipedia’s founder, Jimmy Wales, now says his site will go dark for the day on Wednesday, joining a budding movement to protest the two bills.

The Rays avoided arbitration with starter David Price on a deal worth $4.35MM, tweets MLBTR’s Ben Nicholson-Smith. Price’s salary matches Dontrelle Willis’ first-time pitcher record set six years ago. I thought he’d do better. It seems the “raise argument” did not apply on top of Price’s $1.25MM 2011 salary, which represented the last year of a Major League deal he signed upon being drafted.

In that you can’t assume Beltran wanted to stay in SF. Having another “bidder” very likely would have ratcheted the price up. No reason to think STL would not have used more Pujols money to replace his lineup spot.

Quick OT. I was watching the niners/saints game this weekend but had to run out of the house do to a family emergency. So I was listening to it on the radio. Well I was until the 2:00 minute warning, which occurred at 8:00 PM. 8:00 PM also happens to be the time that the flyers pregame show began that night, thus the station changed over, without mention, to the flyers pregame show with two minutes left in what was possibly the most exciting 2 minutes of football in the past 10 years.

Generally speaking
Fans at football games suck.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
Truth provable by syllogism:
a) Football is vastly better on TV than in person.
b) Anyone to whom this is not obvious is a great fool.
c) Ergo, any person at a football game is a great fool.
d) Only a great fool would reach for what he was given.
e) I am not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you.
