Why?
Why couldn't the Giants pick up Joel Piniero as insurance?
I saw that the Phillies picked him up and it kind of made me cringe. Despite the lack of good major league team signings, the team has also sucked it up in minor league signings such as Piniero. Hope we can find a few old gems before the offseason is up to protect the likes of Zito and Surkamp if they fail miserably. Beyond that, who else do we have in regards to pitching insurance? A minor league deal with a potentially washed up pitcher is not a bank breaker.

There are a lot of starting pitchers that haven't been signed yet that could fill that roll.

Giants minor league FAs
Off the top of my head, they’ve gotten huge value out of Juan Uribe, Andres Torres, Pat Burrell and Ryan Vogelsong on minor league free agent deals (plus the bargain that was Huff’s initial contract). Maybe there is some luck involved, but they’ve done a really nice job over the past few years of signing insurance-type guys who turn out to be key players.
And calvn is right…there are other guys out there who could fill the same role besides Pineiro. I would expect that when we get closer to spring training that there will be more players willing to go to ST on a minor-league deal. Right now, if I was a faded big-league pitcher, I’d still be hoping to get a one-year guaranteed deal.
They already signed Bonser, Burres and Petit. I realize Pineiro’s likely to be better than them, but they’ve already made their moves.

Also Gregor Blanco, who has had a monster season in the VWL as a prototypical leadoff hitter and speedy CF.

I loved that Blanco signing. Before they traded for Pagan I was even thinking he might end up leading off this year. Last season was a disaster and he has no power, but he’s decent defensively and his OBP has been good every year up until last year. Hard to see how he breaks onto the 40-man though with all the outfielders Giants have.
