SAN DIEGO, CA - SEPTEMBER 6: Jason Bartlett and Chris Denorfia of the San Diego Padres dive but can't make the catch on a ball hit by Carlos Beltran of the San Francisco Giants during the first inning of a baseball game at Petco Park on September 6, 2011 in San Diego, California. I could care less about playoffs at this point.

The Giants are not a WS team right now

Promising performances by our young players, to me, would be a better outcome (long term) than an utter collapse of the D-Backs in the last 20 games (which is what it would take to make the postseason).

Get healthy, get young, get Beltran locked up for 2 years.

The only way the Giants make the playoffs

would be an incredible collapse by the Bags, say 9-11 combined with a 15-5 finish for the Giants. With a 15-5 finish, they would have to be playing incredible baseball at that point and I would be okay if they made the playoffs under these conditions. The Bags are not the Phillies, and well, the 2011 Giants are not the 2002 nor the 2010 Giants, so yes, you are probably right.

Yeah, Rockies 1-4 against the D-Backs in the last five games they’ve played against each other.

I think the idea is that when the Rockies play at home, they actually try to win because their fans expect them to. They’re still playing September call-ups so that makes it harder on them and easier on the D-Backs.

Let's face it

Bork will not fill out the roster with young, backup utility guys. As much as I like Crawford, that is not in Bork’s DNA. He will go with guys like Fonte and Kepp, which actually is a good choice. Because of their limitations, that is all of the backup middle infielders we will be able to carry. Of course, we will need to get a starting caliber SS (wishlist is Reyes) and get Mole healthy. So no, I see absolutely no way O-cab is on this team next season.

look no further than what the Bags had to do to completely change their roster under Towers

before the season, brought in Bloomquist, Mora, already had Kelly Johnson. Blew out Mora, traded Johnson, Bloomquist as much as we laughed at the signing, the dude has played a solid backup SS behind Drew and carried the load for much of the season. The Bags also made a good move picking up Aaron Hill (although Hill is a starter and not making backup middle infielder money at $5mm a year). There are options available for backup middle infielders that don’t cost an arm and a leg. I’m not a Bill Hall fan, so I hope they stick with Fonte and Kepp and at least make a run at Reyes.

It looks like his peak is something like second half 2009 Barry Zito. His control wasnt that good today, but he battled, though admittedly against a shitty lineup.

I think he’ll get better, settle in, and be a very quality fifth starter for a few years at least.

by Grant_ME_MERCY on Sep 6, 2011 11:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Way too early to evaluate

I did hear him descried by one scout as Cliff Lee without the 92. I’m not going to judge a 23 year old lefty after two starts.

by lexluth7 on Sep 6, 2011 11:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I actually think Bumgarner reminds me of a Cliff Lee type. Pounds the zone and is efficient, similar velocity, great cutter/slidder, lefty, big fella….

That’s a very generous comp. Surkamp’s ceiling is the good Barry Zito, methinks.

The Dbacks could very well get on a losing streak. They’ve been playing extremely well for a while now but they have their flaws too. I’m not counting on them blowing it but stranger things have happened.

It could happen, but I wouldn’t bet on it. They’re on a similar tear to the one we had in September/October/November of last year.

I didn’t mean they would go on the magical run that we went on, I meant that the likelihood of them stumbling towards the finish-line…isn’t all that great. But yeah, I can’t see them beating any of those three teams in a 7-game series. Although, the D-Backs split the season series with the Brewers, so that one would be a toss-up.

20 games left

Given that we must sweep AZ at AZ, that means we need to pick up 3 other games in 17 other games.

That seems frighteningly achievable.

I'm bullish on youth

for next year. If we’re starting Posey, Panda, Beltran, Sanchez/Keppinger, we could play Pill, Belt and Crawford too. Plus Hector behind Posey. They may not be completely ready, but they can do no worse than this year. Retire the stadium debt and do something about Zito’s contract before you pay big money for a free agent.
