I could care less about playoffs at this point.
The Giants are not a WS team right now
Promising performances by our young players, to me, would be a better outcome (long term) than an utter collapse of the D-Backs in the last 20 games (which is what it would take to make the postseason).
Get healthy, get young, get Beltran locked up for 2 years.
Monday Monkey lives for the weekend, sir.
The only way the Giants make the playoffs
would be an incredible collapse by the Bags, say 9-11 combined with a 15-5 finish for the Giants. With a 15-5 finish, they would have to be playing incredible baseball at that point and I would be okay if they made the playoffs under these conditions. The Bags are not the Phillies, and well, the 2011 Giants are not the 2002 nor the 2010 Giants, so yes, you are probably right.

Yeah, Rockies 1-4 against the D-Backs in the last five games they’ve played against each other.
I think the idea is that when the Rockies play at home, they actually try to win because their fans expect them to. They’re still playing September call-ups so that makes it harder on them and easier on the D-Backs.

I truly hope the Giants go "young" with utility guys
Young also means cheap. Maybe Pill can fill a role as a utility guy, right hand hitter off the bench. He won’t cost much.
Mike Fontenot and Bill Hall are both very cheap, and can actually play multiple positions, unlike Pill.
My adopted Giant, the young Reinier Roibal
Hall again eh?
I have to think you are a relative!!!!
No, haha, he’s just a cheap, underrated utility option, a la Uribe in 2009.
My adopted Giant, the young Reinier Roibal
Hall made 6 million this year
Not exactly cheap.
I know
But he won’t be a ML minimum guy next year. Period. A kid like Pill will be. I want them spending money of potential starters, not the 24-25th bguy on the roster.
Why won’t he be? He played in Fresno for 3 months and didn’t get claimed by anyone when he was DFA’d. He’s basically a free commodity, and no one wanted him.
My adopted Giant, the young Reinier Roibal
Vets don't do that.
Period. It just does not happen.
Mota just under a million
Juan Uribe made a millin for the Giants in "09 and 3.25 in ‘10. Suppan never pitched for the Giants in a regular season game. Wellemeyer’s salary for ’10 was – you guessed it 1 million. .
Whoops - I'm wrong
Hall made 3.25 million. After he had just finsihed his 4 year 24 million dollar contract. He’s not going to play for the minimum next year. No vet does that.
NRI to spring training?
Don't think he can cut it in the bigs? Brock Bond will be the bigger man and walk walk walk away.
Pat practically is, but he has reason to

Hall played for the minimum for the Giants this year, then was DFA’d and accepted a minor league assignment. He’ll sign for the minimum next year.
My adopted Giant, the young Reinier Roibal
Washed-up veterans tend to get more like $1 million, I think.
GROUGTHINK ALERT
This baseball thing is pretty cool
He was passed on by every team. No one wanted him; why would that change?
My adopted Giant, the young Reinier Roibal
The deals the Giants have given to guys, which are probably pretty standard, are ST invites with a $1 million contract if they make the team.
/shrugs
It’s not a big deal though.
GROUGTHINK ALERT
This baseball thing is pretty cool
Yep
Vets don’t take minimum and the Union would go nuts if one did.
Let's face it
Bork will not fill out the roster with young, backup utility guys. As much as I like Crawford, that is not in Bork’s DNA. He will go with guys like Fonte and Kepp, which actually is a good choice. Because of their limitations, that is all of the backup middle infielders we will be able to carry. Of course, we will need to get a starting caliber SS (wishlist is Reyes) and get Mole healthy. So no, I see absolutely no way O-cab is on this team next season.

Not fucked at all.
that page brough us a championship. And while this year has been disappointing, they were killed by injuries, not management.
Fontenot 1.05 Hall 3.25
Minimum is $414,000.
Hall was paid a prorated portion of the minimum by the Giants. His salary at the back end of his contract is irrelevant; that was paid by the Astros.
My adopted Giant, the young Reinier Roibal
AGain - my point is he will not
be as cheap an option as a rookie. I fully reconginze the the Giants didn’t pay much of his salary this year.
look no further than what the Bags had to do to completely change their roster under Towers
before the season, brought in Bloomquist, Mora, already had Kelly Johnson. Blew out Mora, traded Johnson, Bloomquist as much as we laughed at the signing, the dude has played a solid backup SS behind Drew and carried the load for much of the season. The Bags also made a good move picking up Aaron Hill (although Hill is a starter and not making backup middle infielder money at $5mm a year). There are options available for backup middle infielders that don’t cost an arm and a leg. I’m not a Bill Hall fan, so I hope they stick with Fonte and Kepp and at least make a run at Reyes.

How was Aaron Hill a good move? Kelly Johnson was better, and McDonald’s value is entirely defensive.

He’ll learn the pain of being a Giants pitcher eventually
It looks like his peak is something like second half 2009 Barry Zito. His control wasnt that good today, but he battled, though admittedly against a shitty lineup.
I think he’ll get better, settle in, and be a very quality fifth starter for a few years at least.

Way too early to evaluate
I did hear him descried by one scout as Cliff Lee without the 92. I’m not going to judge a 23 year old lefty after two starts.
I actually think Bumgarner reminds me of a Cliff Lee type. Pounds the zone and is efficient, similar velocity, great cutter/slidder, lefty, big fella….

I didn’t mean they would go on the magical run that we went on, I meant that the likelihood of them stumbling towards the finish-line…isn’t all that great. But yeah, I can’t see them beating any of those three teams in a 7-game series. Although, the D-Backs split the season series with the Brewers, so that one would be a toss-up.

I'm bullish on youth
for next year. If we’re starting Posey, Panda, Beltran, Sanchez/Keppinger, we could play Pill, Belt and Crawford too. Plus Hector behind Posey. They may not be completely ready, but they can do no worse than this year. Retire the stadium debt and do something about Zito’s contract before you pay big money for a free agent.
