minor lines, 9/4/11
Labor Day highlights from the Giants' farm: Max Ramirez homered twice, Brad Eldred and James Simmons each homered as part of multi-hit games, Jason Stevenson allowed just 1 ER in 7.0 IP, and Chris Heston had 6.0 scoreless IP.
AAA: Fresno defeated Tacoma 12-9Fresno: RF Justin Christian: 1 for 3, HR
Fresno: 1B Brad Eldred: 3 for 5, HR
Fresno: DH Max Ramirez: 3 for 5, 2 HR
Tacoma: 3B Alex Liddi: 2 for 5, 2 HR, 2 SO
Fresno: SP Matt Yourkin: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 6 K--1 HR
Fresno: RP Marc Kroon: 1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER--1 HR
Ramirez and Eldred both ended the season with three hit games, including Ramirez's 12th and 13th HRs and Eldred's 23rd HR. Christian had his 10th PCL HR (which was also his 14th HR of the year). With 2 HRs in the season finale, the Mariners' Liddi finished his first PCL season with 30 HRs, but his .259/.332/.488 line might be viewed as somewhat disappointing.
Yourkin continued his string of consecutive starts with at least 6.0 IP, but he ended the season on a mild downnote with 5 ER raising his ERA to 4.69. Kroon was a great story in spring training, but with two more earned runs today he finished the year with a 5.11 ERA.
AA: Richmond defeated Altoon 2-1 (8 innings--completed early)
(securing a wild card playoff spot)
Richmond: RF Francisco Peguero: 2 for 4, 2B
Richmond: 1B Wes Hodges: 1 for 4, HR, GiDP
Richmond: SP Jason Stevenson: 7.0 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K--1 IBB
Peguero had the Flying Squirrels' only multi-hit line and finished his Eastern League season with a .309 AVG. Hodges homered in the top of the 8th inning, providing the go-ahead run. He ended up being the game's final batter after the game was called following an hour-and-a-half rain delay.
After two PCL starts, Stevenson made a start for the Flying Squirrels, allowing just 1 R in a complete-game effort. He threw 107 pitches (69 strikes).
A+: San Jose lost to Rancho Cucamonga 7-5
(allowing six runs in the 9th inning)
San Jose: CF Gary Brown: 1 for 3, HBP, 2 SB
San Jose: LF-RF James Simmons: 2 for 4, HR
San Jose: SP Chris Heston: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K--1 HB
Simmons had his 13th HR of the year. He slugged .522 in 159 AB in the Cal League this year. Brown finished his first full pro season with 53 SB.
Making his second straight start with 0 ER, Heston finished the year with a 3.16 ERA--giving him the Cal League ERA title. He was in line to to finish with a 6-0 W-L record over his last eight starts until the bullpen's implosion.
A+: Augusta defeated Rome 3-2
Augusta: SS Kelby Tomlinson: 2 for 4
Augusta: 1B Joel Weeks: 2 for 4, 2B, GiDP
Augusta: SP Taylor Rogers: 7.0 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
Augusta: RP Gaspar Santiago: 1.0 IP, 1 K
Augusta: RP Jose Valdez: 1.0 IP, 1 K
Tomlinson, playing his second game with a full-season affiliate, and Weeks combined for four of the GreenJackets' eight hits.
Rogers finished the season with another fine start. He had just 1 K but a 10/4 GO/FO line in the season finale. He finished the year third in ERA in the sixteen-team SAL. Santiago and Valdez each pitched a perfect inning.

I will forever wonder how much Max Ramirez could have helped the Giants

No kidding.
Do you know his service time status? Is he minor league free agent eligible? I’d like to see him back next year.
I think he is free agent eligible
2011 looks like his 8th season in minor league ball. I believe after 7 they are free agents, but I’m not 100% sure on the rules around that.

Happily, the answer is all but guaranteed to be “not enough.”
The big question about this disappointing season is going to be, “Did bad management cost the team the playoffs?” (And by “management” I mean both in-game tactics and overall roster decisions — the refusal to find another catcher to replace Whiteside/Stewart, Bochy’s questionable pitching changes and oddball lineups, all the playing time given first to Tejada and then to Cabrera, the burying of Brandon Belt, etc.)
Bochy and Sabean haven’t been quite as bad as McCC commenters would lead you to think, but still, they’ve been pretty damn bad. Seven games’ worth? Maybe so.
The catcher and SS black holes really really hurt. Combined with the injury to Burrell and the horribleness of Huff by the time you hit the 5th spot in the lineup you’ve gotten to automatic outs for an inning and a half. The decline of Torres, too. In the end there’s about a 3 batter window in which you’ve got to get somebody on and somebody else hit a HR in order to score.
It was really a perfect storm of awfulness. But, we’ll get ’em next year!
And heck, while I’m not expecting anything, I’ve certainly seen enough weird turnarounds in Septembers past to know things can still change. Heck the ‘98 team was, what, 5 games back with 7 to play and a team in between and they somehow managed to end up snatching defeat from the jaws of triumph? It’s a crazy game.

Yeah
Clearly the difference wouldn’t be 7 wins without some exceptionally fluky good luck. But it could be enough of a difference that it’s still reasonably close.
Regardless, as you touched upon, I feel like they had a worthwhile avenue to explore to upgrade one of their offensive sinkholes and they never tried. That is a problem.

Agreed. Unless Ramirez is the defensive equivalent of trying out Adam Dunn behind the plate, it seems like an obvious thing to try at some point. And not wanting to say goodbye to a good soldier like Eli (or Stewart) really isn’t a good enough reason not to have explored the option.

Saw him play eight times this year and he is not a clank mitt. If I had to guess I would say he struggles with off speed pitches. He can rip a fastball, but tended to fly out on the curve and change when he could not lay off it.
And you are correct Roger. I like Stewart, he at least adds some value with arm. Eli should have been given a break regardless of the risk.

TBH
I really think losing Posey crushed the season. We had to play the inept Whiteside more and the offensively-neutered Stewart (though boy can he throw), but more importantly, keeping him would probably prevent a couple other dominoes from falling.
First, slotting Posey into the cleanup spot and getting rid of the black hole that is Whiteside/Stewart means Crawford’s sub-.200 AVG is a lot easier to swallow. Having three automatic outs 7-8-9 is a lot worse than just 8-9. Maybe Crawford stays up all year, gets comfortable, and starts to hit like he should have. Since Crawford is the best SS we’ve played all year anyway, keeping him makes us better.
Posey also lets us slide underperforming players down a slot, where their ineptitude is much more acceptable.
CF Torres
2B Keppinger
3B Sandoval
C Posey
1B Huff
LF Ross
RF Schierholtz
SS Crawford
is a lot more palatable than Huff cleanup and Ross 5th. Maybe Posey even keeps Belt in the majors longer for the same reasons as Crawford. In any case, I don’t think the benefits from keeping Posey are just the 3-4 wins we get from his contributions; I think he makes the lineup more acceptable and makes us approach the season a little differently, which helps even more.

The linescore just said he left with a leg injury.
The previous play had been described as “a line drive to left fielder” so I suppose it’s conceivable that it could have a line drive up the box that hit him and ricocheted into the OF, or he might just have strained something on the follow through or landed wrong. Who knows?

Thanks.
He’s been pretty key since Hembree left (last night’s disaster notwithstanding). I hope he’s okay.

Just read the game story (that would have been a good place for me to start!), and it says,
On the play, Dunning stumbled as he went to back-up home plate and left the game with an apparent injury.

Yeah, especially since dunnington’s been a bit dicey since coming back from his sore arm as well.

Of course, the team that’s really in trouble is Richmond trying to replace Surkamp. I guess that’s why they brought Stevenson back down from Fresno, but still Stevenson != Surkamp. Maybe they can get a Zito or Sanchez rehab appearnace thrown in there (or maybe that wouldn’t improve things, either).
MY DAD WAS WRONG!
MY BOY NEEDS TO THROW HARDER!
Yeah, neither Zito nor Sanchez appeared particularly dominant in their rehab starts, even in single A. There was no one else in Fresno who could have helped much, either.

Baggs said in his blog that it appears to be someone from Richmond is getting promoted (Hembree was his guess). Do you have a source for this or are you just commenting on his performance?
Looks official. Baggs just tweeted it with Christian’s agent being his source.

Baggs based that comment on the number of Richmond players congratulating an unknown teammate. Christian was a teammate for awhile as he started the season in Richmond.

One of these things is not like the other
This is from the end of a BA story on Surkamp, who was a High School (and college) teammate of Andrew Brackman’s at Cincinnati’s famed Moeller High School. I just got a kick out of the final line and thought I’d share:
Now [Surkamp]’s hoping Brackman will reach the big leagues, too, and Moeller can boast a few big league pitching success stories to go along with Ken Griffey Jr. and Sr., Barry Larkin and Adam Hyzdu.

That has to be kind of annoying for minor leaguers. I’m sure they look forward to testing themselves and competing against a pitcher like that, but at the same time, if you’re fiercely competitive and you want to win the playoffs and they’re starting MLB pitchers against you, I imagine that’s frustrating.

Who has decided to stop walking people and put up a 6:1 K to BB ratio since joining the Mets Org. Although I see he only pitched 2 innings in his last start…
Maybe they’re limiting his innings for work in the playoffs.
Last night in SJ, they pulled Chris Heston after only only 64 pitches (6 innings), even though he had not given up any runs. Probably trying to get him a little rest for the playoffs.

Is St. Lucie in the FSL playoffs? I assumed that they weren’t (thus necessitating Santana switching to the Sally post season games).
MY DAD WAS WRONG!
MY BOY NEEDS TO THROW HARDER!
Yes, St. Lucie is in. It appears that where Santana pitches depends upon what day the playoff games happen.
This is from Adam Rubin with ESPN:
Santana will throw a bullpen session on Tuesday in Miami before the Mets face the Marlins. He then will pitch in a minor league playoff game Friday. The preference is for that game to be in the Florida State League. But if St. Lucie does not have a game that day — it begins a best-of-three series Tuesday — then Santana would pitch in the South Atlantic League playoffs at Savannah, Ga.

I saw that too. I was at the game yesterday and Kroon was throwing rockets, just left one up and gave up the bomb. After the game he hung around and talked to some fans, seems like a really nice guy. Too bad he didn’t get the call up.
