minor lines, 9/4/11

Highlights from the Farm: Gary Brown hit a home run, as Tyler Graham added to his stolen base total.  Meanwhile, Chuck Lofgren had a quality start for Richmond.

Star-divide

AAA: Tacoma defeated Fresno 7-5

Fresno: CF Justin Christian: 3-for-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 BB

Fresno: RF Tyler Graham: 2-for-4, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 SB

Fresno: SP Shane Loux: 7.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 1 HR

Justin Christian is finishing the season strong, with hits in seven straight games, and three doubles and a home run (as wells six walks and four strikeouts) in the span.  Tyler Graham previous high in stolen bases in a season was 47 in 61 attempts in San Jose in 2008 (84 games).  This year, Graham has destroyed that with 60 in 71 attempts (while also achieving a season-high 126 games played).  Shane Loux will finish the year with a 4.60 ERA.

AA: Altoona defeated Richmond 1-0 (in 11 Innings)

Richmond: CF Juan Perez: 1-for-3, 1 2B

Richmond: SP Chuck Lofgren: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 SO, 1 WP, 1 HBP

Richmond: RP Austin Fleet: 4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO

Richmond got held to three hits, and Perez's 25th double of the season was the only extra-base hit of the group.  Chuck Lofgren had a quality start, even with some bouts of wildness.  He'll finish the year with 60 strikeouts and 46 walks across three levels in 79 1/3 innings.  Fleet's 4.32 ERA while spending most of the season in Augusta is disappointing, but he had a 2.77 ERA in four relief Double-A appearances, going more than three innings in three of those four games.

A+: Rancho Cucamonga defeated San Jose 7-4

San Jose: CF Gary Brown: 1-for-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 SO

San Jose: 3B Nick Noonan: 2-for-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 SO, 1 E (7)

San Jose: C Tommy Joseph: 1-for-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 SO

San Jose: SP Andy Reichard: 6.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO, 1 WP, L (9-4)

San Jose: RP Michael Main: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 2 SO, 1 HR, 1 WP

Gary Brown picked up his 14th home run (and fourth in the last ten games), bringing his OPS up to .926.  He also extending his hitting-streak to 15 games.  Noonan picked up his first extra-base hit in San Jose in the last ten games, but also his seventh error in 27 games.  Tommy Joseph picked up his 33rd double of the season.  Andy Reichard will finish the regular season with a 3.38 ERA after finishing the year as a starter.  Michael Main's season is a distinct failure, as his posts a career-high 6.71 ERA (His previous high was a 6.49 ERA while with Bakersfield in the California League), and still had injuries to deal with.

A-: Rome defeated Augusta 6-1

Augusta: DH Adam Duvall: 1-for-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 SO

Augusta: CF Chris Lofton: 1-for-2, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SO

Augusta: SP Shawn Sanford: 6.0 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO, L (10-10)

Just like Perez and the Squirrels, Adam Duvall picked up his 29th doubles of the season as one of Augusta's only three hits after last night's marathon.  Last season, he had just 10 in 54 games with Salem-Keizer.  Chris Lofton was the only GreenJacket on-base more than once, and has 49 walks and 98 strikeouts with one game to go in the season.  Shawn Sanford, who was nearly the first 9-inning Perfect Game pitcher in SAL history in his last start, but ended the season on a down note, giving up his first runs since a nine-earned run start on August 14th.

SAL South Division leader Savannah got rained out, leading to a complicated playoff situation with the GreenJackets having one game left.  They are 1.5 games behind the lead team in the SAL, tied with Greenville.  To win the division outright, the GreenJackets need to win, Lexington to win both games against Savannah as they make up the rainout, and Greenville loss to win the division.

I disagree

There’s still a lot of games to be played.

It may be a 4-A competition, but let’s see what Belt, Peguero, Pill, Edlefsen and the rest can do, and get some ideas for next year.

Well, at least he’s not left handed. (Play Belt at third!)

by kaliber on Sep 5, 2011 10:06 PM PDT up reply actions

What I really really just want is for Belt to stop K’ing so much. His major league K rate is higher than Jarrett Parker’s this year (and I think Belt’s combined K rate for the Majors/AAA might be as well). And the worst part is that to my eye, it’s mostly fb that are killing him. He just doesn’t seem able to square up good velocity at this point.

I was looking on Fangraphs to find pitch types graphs for hitters to see if my eye was accurately reflecting reality, but I couldn’t find anything. Xanthan, what’s Belt’s pitch type heat chart look like at this point?

I'm not that worried about the Ks

I think that he’s just overthinking things right now, which is leading to him taking too many pitches and guessing too much. The intermittent playing time doesn’t help.

It’s not really that intermittent. He played nearly every game the second half of August (starting in 14 of 16 games), and that starting stretch is concurrent with his K rate spike (in fact, it’s been an overall slide with the OBP plummeting along with everything else. At the beginning of that starting streak his wOBA was around .340 and it jumped up to .350 almost immediately (I’d guess after the 2 HR game in history), but after 2-3 weeks of pretty steady starting it’s fallen to .301 and his wRC+ is down to 86. I don’t think intermittent PT really explains things satisfactorily. He’s going to need to make adjustments to the way he’s being attacked.

I agree that’s it something to watch, I just feel right now that his season has been such a mish-mash that I’m not going to draw much of a conclusion from his stats. First he rakes in ST and is a surprise pick to make the ML team. Then he gets plenty of ABs for about 3 weeks (!), but appears to me to be too passive and too cerebral and taking too many pitches. Then he gets sent down to AAA, plays for a couple of weeks and gets hurt. He sits out for about a month, then gets sent to SJ, then back to Fresno, then up to SF again in August where he has to be 2nd-guessing himself due to the really dumb antics of Bochy. In the end, it’s amazing to me that he’s even still able to do anything in the batter’s box after the carnival ride he’s gone through this year.

You know that’s all well and true but the facts remain that the life of a pro athlete is short, the vast majority of them don’t get to play as regularly as they like, and the next hotshot is always coming up right behind. And whatever the reasons, players who don’t take advantage of whatever opportunities are presented often find themselves passed over soon enough. That’s a brutally harsh fact but people who can’t face brutally harsh facts in the eye have no business being pro athletes, as some of Brandons current and recently departed teammates could attest.

According to the pitch values chart on Fangraphs, Belt hits fastballs pretty well – and gets completely eaten up by changeups and curveballs. Looky.

I’m also not very worried about Belt. We’re still talking about 149 PAs spread out over 5 months, even if he got about 2 weeks of solid PT in August. Jeff Keppinger has had more PAs with this team than Belt has.

by TDonk on Sep 5, 2011 9:36 AM PDT up reply actions

Ah, thanks. That’s what I couldn’t find. It is 149 PA, but his AAA numbers were similar. It stands to reason he’ll figure it out at some point, but I think that there’s definitely some adjustments that he still needs to make. I’ve really felt all year that he needed to be left at Fresno for the full season, but I understand the exigencies that prevented that from happening.

MY DAD WAS WRONG!

by Roger on Sep 5, 2011 9:57 AM PDT up reply actions

Although, now that I look at it, I’m not sure it supports your conclusion. I would think that 1.6 is pretty low for wFB, where good hitters should really be making their hay. I see that Cody Ross is at 6.2, and Pablo Sandoval 3.6. Last year Buster Posey was 6.9. And Matt Holliday (just to pick one very good hitter out of hat) has spent most of his career with a double digit wFB, with a career low of 5.7 his second year in the majors.

So, I think I’m on the right track: if he were attacking hittable FB more successfully, he wouldn’t be putting himself into counts where he was vulnerable to put away “speciality pitches” (as Kruk likes to say).

MY DAD WAS WRONG!
MY BOY NEEDS TO THROW HARDER!

by Roger on Sep 5, 2011 10:04 AM PDT up reply actions

It’s fastball runs above average though. Samples are small, but he’s hit fastballs better than the average hitter in the majors to the tune of 1.6 runs per 100. I fully support your premise that he is not as good a hitter to date as Pablo and Posey, however. Also, Cody Ross hates sliders.

He definitely has adjustments to make, but I don’t know that making them down in the PCL would be the most helpful. That league was giving no signs of being particularly hard for him. The Braves are reaping the rewards of being patient with Freddie Freeman, who I definitely don’t think was developmentally ahead of Belt at the beginning of the season. Same with Hosmer and the Royals. However, regardless of where you and I fall on that spectrum, I think we agree that Belt’s development has been handled less than optimally, and consequentially he’s not where he should be right now as a hitter.

by TDonk on Sep 5, 2011 10:25 AM PDT up reply actions

Agreed. The only (slight) disagreement I’d make with you was that his AAA did show some signs of challenge for him in two ways: a K rate spike that was much higher than A or AA samples, and a drop a in SLG (of around .100 I think) from EL, despite moving from a pitcher friendly environment to an extreme hitter friendly one.

Regardless, I think at this point he’s seen enough major league pitching that going back to AAA isn’t going to be much help, and the best course is to stick him in the lineup every day in 2012 and hope that he starts moving up and over the learning curve relatively quickly.

I’m feeling pretty confident that he can be Bourjos. Likely a lesser glove (Bourjos is an unbelievably great defender), but I think he’s definitely capable of putting up Bourjos-like (2011 version) offensive numbers with a plus glove in center.

FWIW, Brown’s BB/K numbers are a lot better than what Bourjos posted in high-A.

Interestingly, one of the few guys who’s done even more damage in the Cal League than Brown (whose 4th in wOBA and wRC+) is another guy who the Giants were frequently attached to in the 2010 draft — Jedd Gyorko who really just destroyed the league until being promoted to AA.

Whoever’s been running the Padres draft room under the new regime apparently knows how to identify bats. Both Gyorko from 2010 and Spangenburg from 2011 have really hit the ground running in their pro careers, leaving a trail of scorched leagues behind them.

Well it looks like he could project into a better hitter. The SO% for Bourjos was pretty consistent across all minor league levels (about 17%-18%) and has jumped up another 5 percentage points hitting the majors this year. If Brown can remain consistent with his 12-13% in the minors and keep it at 17-18% in the majors that could be pretty significant for speedster.

It’s all SSS compared to Bourjos, but I think Brown will project with a little more power as well, but he’ll have to be better offensively, because Bourjos get’s a significant amount of value from his glove.

I think that John Klima’s (from baseballbeginnings.com) pre-draft scouting report for Brown has turned out to be pretty accurate. While everybody and his brother seemed to be writing that Brown’s arm was well below-average, Klima wrote that Brown didn’t have a strong arm, but is was very accurate and effective in games.

What’s interesting is that the Braves have kept in AA virtually all of the last two seasons (with the exception of a handful of AAA games), so he’s now spent essentially the last 4 years in AA without ever earning a promotion to AAA.

I guess the Braves are feeling a speedy PR could win them a few games in September, although with their lead, I’m not sure what the urgency of that is.

Augusta out of playoffs?

I’m not sure how Augusta qualifies if they end up in a tie with Savannah (which is their best-case scenario now). As I read the league rules, the first tie-breaker is head-to-head record in the 2nd half – and Savannah owns a winning record against Augusta in both halfs.

I jsut saw that article. The Sally must have some rule where it 2 teams end up in a tie for the 2nd half title and 1 of the teams already won the 1st half title, then the other team is named the 2nd half champs. Either that or Augusta would get in based on their infintessimally better winning percentage due to the fact that they played 2 fewer games than Savannah. If that is the case, and I were Greenville, I would demand the Augusta have to make up those 2 games.

Very weird

MiLB.com is showing that Richmond beat Altoona 2-1 this afternoon. That would mean that they’ve clinched the wildcard berth. The really strange thing is that the game lasted only 7.5 innings and the Squirrels were the visiting team, yet the Squirrels hit a walk-off HR in the top of the 8th!

I get that it was only scheduled for a 7 inning game, but how does the visiting team hit a solo HR in the top of the 8th with 1 out and that’s the last play of the game? I guess we’ll have to wait for the explanation tomorrow.

It wasn’t scheduled that way. They hit a rain delay in the top of the 8th and I guess the league just decided to call it and award the victory rather than force them to try to finish the game tomorrow. The Sally could get into some similar issues today in Lexington trying to get that second game finished.

Yeah, but why call the game so soon? They still had at least 8 hours before midnight. Since it looks like Bowie is going to win their final game today, I’d be really pissed if I were them. Unless the Altoona stadium is flooded out then the league should have waited the whole night to try to get the bottom of the 8th played.

I suppose, but Bowie’s game’s going to end the same way (albeit with them winning rather than losing). We have a storm cell stretching back about 800 miles and I know in Washington we’ve now entered a period where we 90% chance of rain for the next 12-15 hours. Altoona’s an hour or so west of us so it hit there first.

Yeah, looking at the Weather Center app they’re 90% until about 5 in the morning and then cranking back up again at 7 am.

They could hang out there all night, but I think they just saw the writing on the wall.

Taking a 2nd look at it, Bowie can’t really complain. If you go by the real rules of baseball, then the Bowie game should have been rolled back to the last full innnig played and Bowie would have won by a 3-1 score. If you use the same rules in the Richmond game, then you end up with a 7 inning tie game – or no game played – and Bowie ends up .5 games behind Richmond, instead of 1 game behind.

i was listening to the game on the radio

the rain started POURING DOWN right before Hodges at bat. They let him take his at bat (which resulted in a homerun of course) and then immediately covered the field in tarp. but from what the radio announcer was saying… just by waiting that couple minutes the amount of water had made the field basically un-playable. so even if it did stop raining (which it didn’t look like it would for some time), the field would not have been in any condition to resume play anyways.

seems things worked out just perfectly for the squirrels this time :]

Augusta wins, Savannah loses 1st game - pressure is all on Savannah in game 2

Augusta eked out a 3-2 victory in their final game of the regular season. Greenville won their final regular season game. Savannah lost 2-1 in game 1 of their doubleheader. If Savannah loses game #2, then it will end in a 3-way tie for first in the 2nd half. Savannah and Greenville will be 40-30 and Augusta will be 39-29.

Augusta will have the better winning percentage (.5735 vs. .5714), so maybe they end up as the 2nd half champs?

this is what I could find
If the second-half winner in either division is the same as the first-half winner in that division, then the team with the next best overall record in that division will be chosen as the Wild Card.

If two or more teams are tied for the Wild Card position in either division, then the following series of tiebreakers will be used to determine the Wild Card:

1. Better record in head-to-head competition
2. Best second-half record against divisional opponents
3. Best overall (full-season) record against divisional opponents

Augusta was 4-8 vs. Greenville this year
6-15 vs. Savannah.

so doesn’t look good…

Interestingly, the issue is so confusing that even MiLB.com said earlier today that Augusta had been eliminated, but Billy Byler tweeted that he had confirmed with the Sally league president this morning that an Augusta victory and two Lexington victories would result in Augusta going to the playoffs.

Lexington’s up 3-0 in the 4th of a 7 inning game. If that lead holds looks like we’ll have 3 of the 4 full season clubs in the playoffs. Plus the AZL team. Not too shabby.

It looks like Augusta will be given the 2nd half title based on the better winning percentage. Thank God for those 2 rain outs that Augusta never made up.

The GJs made the playoffs tonight with Lexington winning two. Quite a turnaround from the first half when their defense and hitting were abysmal. Some unbelievable arms in that group that should be fun to watch progress

Why the thought it must be someone from Richmond?

Since they clinched a playoff berth today, I can’t see anyone coming off that roster.

My guess is either Justin Christian or Tyler Graham, and I think it’ll be the latter.

where do you guys get your information on college and high school players? I really intend to get more knowledgeable on the draft for 2012. Any help would be much appreciated.
