minor lines, 9/9/11

Friday playoff highlights from the Giants' farm: Chris Dominguez homered among three hits, and Daryl Maday had 7.0 shutout IP.  Also notable, Shawn Sanford did not allow an earned run in 5.0 IP.

Star-divide

AA: Richmond defeated Harrisburg 6-0
(scoring five runs over the final four innings for insurance in their playoff opener)

Richmond: RF Francisco Peguero: 1 for 4, 2B, BB, 2 SO
Richmond: 2B Charlie Culberson: 2 for 5
Richmond: C Johnny Monell: 2 for 4, 2B, BB
Richmond: 3B Chris Dominguez: 3 for 5, HR, SO

Richmond: SP Daryl Maday: 7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K--1 IBB, 1 HB

Dominguez led off the 2nd inning with a solo HR, scoring the game's only run through the first five innings.  Adding a couple singles in later innings, he was the game's lone player with three hits.  Monell, batting third in the Flying Squirrels' lineup also reached base three times.  Peguero and Culberson each reached base twice for the Squirrels.

Maday had perhaps the best start of his pro career considering the playoff pressure.  Scattering seven baserunners over seven innings, he combined with a reliever for the shutout.

A+: San Jose begins its playoff series tonight against Stockton

A-: Augusta lost to Savannah 3-2
(allowing a run in the bottom of the 8th inning to force a decisive game 3)

Augusta: DH Adam Duvall: 2 for 4
Augusta: C Jeff Arnold: 1 for 3, BB

Augusta: SP Shawn Sanford: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
Savannah: SP Johan Santana: 3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

Duvall, who had two of the GreenJackets' six hits, and Arnold each reached base twice.

The pitching matchup featured the Sally League's most outstanding pitcher versus the rehabbing two-time Cy Young award winner now with the Mets.  Neither pitcher allowed an earned run.  In fact, the GreenJackets scored the game's only earned run to tie in the top of the 7th inning but took the loss after allowing an unearned run in the 8th inning.  Sanford's performance included an 8/4 GO/FO line.

Well realistically, Lyle being traded for Jack Hanrahan would almost certainly be the most valuable thing Dominguez could ever do in the major leagues. He’s 24 and just put up a .270 obp in AA. Not good.

Bu yeah for postseason HRs!

Wow

I didn’t realize how bad he cratered after that hot start in AA. If only he struck out a little less, we could be watching him take ABs away from Belt right now.

Richmond, no question.

Well, either slot is available (Gillaspie is a free agent after this season, iirc). Personally, I’d assign him to Fresno.

There is no way that Gillaspie is a minor league FA for at least two more years.

Options. He used all 4 all ready.

As Roger said, he’s got one more option year. But also, him being out of options doesn’t make him a FA. He would only be if they released him, and barring being released, he’d still have to accumulate six years of major league service time before being a FA. If he did sign with another team, he’s still beholden to that service clock.

by kaliber on Sep 11, 2011 11:07 AM PDT up reply actions

still be beholden zie

Wow, the Mets will do anything to win a crown at any level, farming out Johan Santana. Will Reyes and Wright be playing for Savsnnah tomorrow?

Buster Posey: still better than Eli and Stewart, even with a broken ankle.

LOL Mets

Just back from Mets-Cubs (my daughter’s two favorite teams) where Reyes made two errors and Wright made two errors. They didn’t farm out Santana — he’s on rehab and they are moving him around to fit his pitching schedule. All things being equal, they probably would preferred to keep him at Port St. Lucie but the only way to keep him on his throwing schedule was to have him go for Savannah.
