minor lines, 8/4/11

Thursday highlights from the Giants' farm: Luke Anders homered and doubled, and Roger Kieschnick doubled twice.

Star-divide

AAA: Fresno lost to Iowa 5-2

Fresno: 2B Emmanuel Burriss: 2 for 5, SO
Fresno: LF Edgar Gonzalez: 3 for 5, 2B
Iowa: CF Brett Jackson: 3 for 4, HR

Fresno: SP Matt Yourkin: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 3 K--2 HR

With five of the Grizzlies' ten hits, Burriss and Gonzalez were the only two Grizzlies to reach base twice.  Jackson, the Cubs' top prospect, had his 5th PCL HR, plus a couple singles.

Yourkin had his seventh straight start with 6.0+ IP, but he also has allowed at least 2 ER in each of those starts.  He has a 5.10 ERA over those seven starts.

AA: Richmond lost to New Hampshire 4-2

Richmond: RF Roger Kieschnick: 2 for 4, 2 2B
Richmond: 1B Wes Hodges: 1 for 4, HR

Richmond: SP Eric Surkamp: 6.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7 K
New Hampshire: SP Chad Jenkins: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K

Kieschnick's 21st and 22nd doubles were two of the Flying Squirrels' five hits.  He has hit .296/.363/.593 in 81 AB since the all-star break.  Hodges had his 7th HR for the Squirrels.

Surkamp had a quality start, although it seems like a non-descript start by his standards.  It was just the third time in his last ten starts he has pitched into the 7th inning.  He was outpitched by Jenkins, whom the Blue Jays drafted 20th overall two years ago.  Jenkins has a 4.17 ERA in eleven Eastern League starts.

A+: San Jose defeated High Desert 6-3

San Jose: CF Gary Brown: 2 for 5, 3B, SB
San Jose: 3B Nick Noonan: 2 for 4, BB, SB
San Jose: 1B Luke Anders: 2 for 4, HR, 2B, SO

San Jose: SP Chris Heston: 6.0 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 7 K--2 WP
San Jose: RP Jake Dunning: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 3 K

Anders had his 10th HR and 21st double.  Also with two hits were Brown, who had his 8th triple, and Noonan, who was playing his second game with San Jose after a stint with Fresno.

Heston had his third straight quality start as he improved his W-L record to 10-4.  Dunning had 3 K in 2.0 scoreless IP.  After a 5.79 ERA in the Cal League's first half, he has a 1.96 ERA so far in the second half.

A-: Augusta lost to Savannah 5-3

Augusta: LF Rafael Rodriguez: 1 for 3, BB
Augusta: SS Robert Haney: 2 for 4, E

Augusta: SP Taylor Rogers: 6.0 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

Haney had the GreenJackets' only multi-hit line.  Rodriguez also reached base twice.

Rogers bounced back from his previous start (5 ER in 1.0 IP) with a quality start, but after 9 H today, he has a .309 BAA in the second half (over eight starts) after a .209 BAA in the first half (over thirteen starts).

ssA: Salem-Keizer lost Boise 9-5

Salem-Keizer: LF Leo Ochoa: 3 for 5
Salem-Keizer: C Dan Burkhart: 2 for 3, 2B, BB

Salem-Keizer: SP Cameron Lamb: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K

Ochoa's three singles raised his AVG to .286.  Burkhart also reached base three times.

Lamb had a non-descript start which was definitely improvement over his previous two starts (10 ER in 5.2 IP).

R: Giants defeated Angels 18-5

Scottsdale: CF Darren Ford: 2 for 3, HR, BB, SO
Scottsdale: SS Carter Jurica: 2 for 4, SB
Scottsdale: 3B Jose Cuevas: 3 for 5, 2B, SF
Scottsdale: RF Elliott Blair: 3 for 4, 2B, HBP

Scottsdale: SP Kyle Vazquez: 1.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 0 K--1 WP
Scottsdale: RP Miguel Ferrer: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K

Continuing their rehabs, Ford and Jurica each had two hits, including a HR for Ford.  Cuevas and Blair both had three hits, raising their AVGs to .308 and .357.

Vazquez continues to be unimpressive in his rehab with a 12.46 ERA.  Ferrer, the first of four rookie Giants relievers, allowed his first earned run in a month.

There better be some gems in the lower rounds of the 2011 draft or we are going to be stuck with a terrible farm for years. The 2012 draft will be considerably weaker than the 2011 draft and we won’t have a great position in it. Will we have any compensation picks either? Ross is a free agent, but I could see him accepting arbitration. Ugh. If the team is bad in 2012, what do we have to sell? Freddy, Huff, Dirty, Wilson… Wilson could get a decent return.

Check out Catch-28.com, a blog about Buster Posey and the San Francisco Giants.

JSanchez will fetch a nice prospect

As will F. Sanchez. Wilson will get a couple nice prospects, Huff won’t get anything other than salary relief and not even that unless he really picks it up. Vogelsong might be marketable and there are assuredly a couple relievers we can trade. Torres could get an interesting guy with his relative cheapness and control through 2013.

But I don’t think we’ll be selling; getting Freddy and Buster back, hopefully Crawford being able to hit a little, and Belt forcing his way onto the roster will give us an average offense and the pitching is all under control, plus the rest of the division sucks even more now that the Rockies traded Jiminez. I do think (and hope) that Sanchez is traded in the offseason and Surkamp is given his spot – Dirty’s value will probably be sinking from now on and I think Surkamp is ready.

Hoping

Wilson is traded with Sanchez but that’s likely a lost cause by now; Wilson isn’t going anywhere until he’s no longer good enough to be valuable. At least hembree’s coming through the pipeline aLong with our other live arms from this draft.

by dregarx on Aug 5, 2011 9:57 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

I doubt the Giants would trade Freddy (Giants love their veterans), Huff (b/c of contract), or Wilson if we suck next year. J Sanchez is our only real tradeable asset, and even then, we wouldn’t get anything significant in return. Probably a B-level prospect or an average mlb player.

Hypothetically, if we could deal Wilson, I think we could get a decent package of prospects, but probably not quite the caliber of Mike Adams.

by Runz Plz on Aug 5, 2011 12:13 AM PDT up reply actions

I don’t see much reason to expect the team to be bad next year. For one thing, we’re in a division with at least two deadbeats. And for another, we’ll still have the lion’s share of the second best pitching staff in the league together.

Your pessimism seems misplaced

I have almost exactly the opposite thoughts on the recent influx of talent into, and the current state of, the system than you do. IMO, we’ve had a large influx of young talent into the system between the 2011 draft and all of the IFAs we’ve signed this calendar year. Certainly we don’t have many prospects that are going to contribute at the major league level in 2012 (Belt, Surkamp, Hembree and Hector Sanchez appear to be the only candidates), but 2013 (to the previous 4 names add Peguero, Brown, Crawford, Culberson, Kieschnick, Dominguez, Adrianza and Verdugo) and beyond look a lot more bright than it did at the end of the 2010 season.

Hmm, I thought his pessimism was misplaced, and now I think you’re optimisim is. I wonder where that places me in the spectrum, exactly.

FWIW, I’d say the system looks nearly exactly the same to me now as it did last year with the single exception of Brown being better than I’d hoped. And possibly the dark horse exception of Adam Duvall as well. Otherwise, thinks seem to be going about how I’d expect, and it does still look like a weaker system to me.

by Roger on Aug 5, 2011 10:06 AM PDT up reply actions

I didn’t say it wasn’t in the bottom half with respect to other systems, just that there are guys in the system that are likely to contribute to the major league club in 2012 and 2013. Also that

we are going to be stuck with a terrible farm for years
isn’t a sustainable attitude when one looks at the lower levels of the system.

The main reason I say that the system looks decidedly better than at the end of the 2010 season, is the large number of teenaged talent that have been brought into the system since the end of the 2010 season. I’m not sure how somebody that is such an “age-appropriate” believer as you are can look at the list below and not be more optimistic than you were 10 months ago:
17-year olds:
Enmanuel De Jesus, Alejandro Flores, Carlos Diaz, Rony Sotelo, Royel Astacio, Noel Diaz, Emmanuel Hernandez, Nelder Gonzalez, Nicoll Parra, and they still have a chance to sign Waldyvan Estrada
18-year olds:
Kyle Crick, Jean Delgado, Christian Diaz, Clayton Blackburn, Drew Stiner, Adalberto Mejia, Simon Mercedes, Richard Rodriguez, Julio Pena, Reyes Moronta, Alexis Almeida, Franklin Matamoros, Randy Ortiz, and they still have a chance to sign: Taylor Leslie, Cristian Otero and Marc Frazier
19 year olds:
Jonathan Jones, Demondre Arnold, Travious Relaford, Rando Moreno

They only real talent the system has lost in the last 10 months has been Zack Wheeler and Thomas Neal, but at the same time we’ve seen Eric Surkamp, Heath Hembree, Hector Sanchez, Gary Brown, Ryan Verdugo, Adam Duvall, Jacob Dunnington, and Brett Bochy make major strides in their development. Brandon Belt has also shown that what he did last year wasn’t a 1-year mirage.

As a comparison

Do the same exercise for this exact same date in 2010 and you’ll see the relatively huge influx of teenagers that we’ve added to the system in last 10 months after October 2010 in comparison to the 10 months after the end of October 2009. The difference is stark and striking. Here are the numbers and names:

Teenagers added to the system after the 2009 season: 10 (vs. at least 26, and up to 30, after the 2010 season)
16-year olds: Carlos Cartegena
17-year olds: Renzo Freite
18-year olds: Chuckie Jones, Brandon Allen, Caleb Hougesen, Cristian Paulino, Joan Gregorio, Gregorio Minier, Juan Nova
19-year olds: Jacob Dunnington

True, but I’m far from knowing what the worth of either group is like to be. Could be a comparison of 10×0 to 30×0 which as we know is the same.

You could say that every year about any teenaged class brought in by any team. Not to mention college draftees. At some point, with any prospect you have to make projections on how each prospect will likely develop. Once you get past the first 10 to 20 draft picks each year all prospects face long odds of success, especially the teenaged ones. The odds of developing a success story are better from a group of 26 than a group of 10.

Depends on the 26 and depends on the 10. They’re not all equivalent players. Of that group of 26 there’s not many who are suggesting a lot of upside right now. Maybe 6? Of the 10 there were maybe three. Just being a teenager isn’t necessarily a tool. It just helps to be a teenager if you’ve got some tools.

I did expect Surkamp to be very good. His season has probably exceeded expectations, but I’d still say he’s on target for being exactly what I thought he’d be: a good back end of the rotation starter with a #3 upside. On the other hand, even before the trade I’d say Wheeler had a disappointing season and was looking like less than I’d imagined.

As for Hembree, I pretty much always expect the Giants to produce live armed relievers, and I still have no idea what we’ve got in Hector Sanchez. His AAA showing hasn’t been very good, and his Cal league showing was quite nice, especially for his age, but it was the Cal league and it came with a bizarre drop in walk rate. He’s still a puzzlement to me.

As for the notion that we have help coming in 2013, you listed 8 people in the 2013 category above. My notion is that if we get two solid big leaguers out of those 8 we did well. I really can’t imagine getting 4 above average players out of that group.

by Roger on Aug 5, 2011 11:32 AM PDT up reply actions

Agree with you on the 2 solid major leaguers in 2013 (I wasn’t implying we’d likely get any more from that list), but we don’t really need more than that with our current nucleus – and getting 2 solid major leaguers out of your system in any single season is above average production, IMO. I also didn’t include Joe Panik in that list – and I can see him as playing 2B in the majors by the middle of 2013.

yeah, I agree with that. Although we sure have some holes that could stand being filled. It would be great if Brown, Peguero, and one of the SS could all contribute, because we desperately need some impact out of our OF and anything resembling a major league SS.

I still don’t know what to make of Panik. Can’t wait to see what he does in the Cal league next year. Right now it’s hard to see what exactly he does exceptionally. Hopefully its the contact skill. His walk rate is ok. Doesn’t look to have much power. Average runner it sounds like. And Rich isn’t making me feel great about his D. Not sure what that all adds up to.

Yeah, I think doubles power is the most to hope for from him (which is what I expected when he was drafted), but I think he is an advanced and polished hitter and a guy that should hit for a high BA and OBP in the Cal League as long as he doesn’t try to swing for the fences. I think he’ll be in the majors quickly if they switch him to 2B, but I’m not predicting that he’ll be an impact player unless he can stick at SS.

Incidentally, there was a strange and interesting note this morning in the New York Mets organizational report for the next edition of BA:

It comes at the end of a story on the Mets getting Wheeler:

Wheeler, who joined high Class A St. Lucie, tweaked his delivery in July, returning to the delivery he used in high school. That included a return to a higher leg kick and “bringing my hands next to my head,” he said.

“When I first got drafted (and) went to (instructional league), they tried to settle my motion down a little bit, make it a little easier,” Wheeler said. "I think I just had to think a little too much. I was going too slow, didn’t have any rhythm really. When I broke my hands I had to think about getting the ball up and stuff a little too much.

“It’s all one fluid motion (now). It works out good. I just feel comfortable again.”

I certainly hadn’t heard about this from the Giants side when it happened. I wonder if Tidrow approved. Of course, Bumgarner ditched the Giants proposed motion changes and went back to his old way and it worked fine for him. Still, when a kid is struggling to find command a motion makeover might not be what the powers that be wanted to see.

That’s not exclusive to BA and I don’t think that it originated from them. I read that exact same quote a few days ago. It actually came out in an article that I read a day or two after Wheeler was traded, but I’m too lazy right now to find the link.

The byline is Steve Popper who I’m not familiar with. Quite probably it’s a similar arrangement to Baggarly being their Giants correspondant, and if so it might well have been included in NY media’s coverage of the trade. Bagg’s organizational reports frequently include things that I’ve seen bits of in his blog and SJ Mercury work.

Believe it or not, I originally read it on ESPN.com. The reason BA claimed it as their own work is that it came from a telephone conference call that Wheeler held with numerous sites and publications, so they all got the same quotes. Here’s the link to the ESPN.com article:

Without commenting on the farm system, I see no reason the Giants will look to trade next year. They have some good to very good young talent (pitchers, Pablo, Belt, Posey) under control for a while yet. Sabean should always be open to dealing a veteran (should Huff pick it up but be pressured by Belt, for example), but I think the Giants will be good next year and for a few years to follow that. Just look at this year. Awful, awful offense and still in first place on August 5th.

The only 2 things that I can think of are:

1. They heard from their medical experts that his arm will almost surely never be the same again, so it’s wasted money to keep him on the payroll.

2. He did something (on or off the field) that really, really pissed Bobby Evans off.

I was thinking more along the lines of Casilla not doing the rehab work that the Giants wanted him to do, but I also thught that it was possible that he had done something in his personal life that crossed the line (criminally and/or morally) for the Giants. It could have been a cumulative effect where he did something that was the final straw in a string of bad acts.

I doubt the visa thing would be an issue, unless there’s some major crime that we don’t know about yet. He has a long history of recieving visas to work in the USA.

Ritzo said yesterday there was going to be a corresponding 40 man move but it wasn’t his place to report it. I wonder if he thought it was related to the DeRosa move or if there really is something else coming.

If there’s another move, then you can see the logic (who’s going to pick up a kid undergoing a year of rehab from arm surgery?). Without a corresponding move to make it necessary, it really does look like more of a punitive deal.

Even without the move, an unconditional release means they don’t care if he clears waivers. He’ll be a free agent if he does. That’s why I feel like there’s more to the story.

Roger Kieschnick

He has very quietly re-entered the prospect discussion. After missing most of last year with back issues, he has had a very respectable season in Double A. He had an awful April, and a mediocre May, but June, July, and now August he has been OPSing 900, 828, and 1400 (in 10 abs). Since the all-star break he is hitting 296/ 363 /593 in 23 games (81 abs). Even with his bad months he is top 30 in EL OPS for the season.

Eh, he’s having a league average season, as a 24 year old corner OF who’s repeating the level. He’s also sporting pretty much the exact same 23% K rate he’s had every year. It’s not exactly a giant breakthrough.

MY DAD WAS WRONG!
MY BOY NEEDS TO THROW HARDER!

by Roger on Aug 5, 2011 5:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Well, let’s be fair to Roger (him, not you) with the context.

He’s having an average season after starting out as one of the worst hitters in the league for the first 2 months.

He’s repeating the level, but only played 2-3 months last year because of a back injury.

The K- and BB-rates are what they are. The question has always been can he make enough contact and can his power carry him. Looking at his overall line, the answer is no. Looking at his last 2 months, accounting for the injury and the cold start, the answer is maybe.

Also, Roger (you, not him), is it strictly age-versus-league that correlates with prospect success, or does experience factor in? Because this is RK’s 3rd pro season, and he missed half of one plus fall leagues with an injury.

"When the Giants call up a 21-year-old Venezuelan catcher who started the year in San Jose, was hitting well with poor plate discipline, but wasn't on Baseball America's preseason list of the organization's 30 best prospects, only good things can happen."
Congratulations, Hector!

To me it’s really just age. Experience can sometimes be used as a mitigating factor (for instance with two sports stars) where you might think, this guy can put it all together and then just fly thru the minors (essentially the Kenny Lofton model of development). There’s certainly such a thing as late bloomers, though with Kieschnick that doesn’t seem to be a factor, with the exception of a sharp decline in power last year (relatable to the injury) he’s been pretty much the same player every year. He doens’t have youth on his side and so there’s not much chance of projectability.

I just think he is what he is, and what he is is an average minor leaguer. Given that he profiles as a corner OF, I don’t see how an average minor leaguer is supposed to translate into a productive major leaguer. There’s really just not one thing about him that jumps out as special or even above average. That’s not a very interesting first division prospect to me.

Agreed

I’ve watched him a lot this year in Richmond and he’s just about the epitome of meh. There’s nothing that he does well enough to stand up and make you take notice. Nice org guy, but that’s it.

But not in the big league’s, not old enough.

3 different people getting starts in CF in the big club. Maybe Belt should work on that position.
OK, seriously, if Huff just has to play most of the time and Ross stays inconsistent, I want to see the Belt-Beltran-Nate outfield in some arrangement.

I don’t think I’d want Nate starting in CF. Particularly not with the baby giraffe covering left field.

I guess even with Torres’ struggles, I’m still not convinced that Schierholtz is the better offensive player going forward, and I’m definitely convinced that Torres is the better defensive player.

How about...

How about we move Pablo to SS, find a way to add Beltre in the off season, and have Belt, Beltre, Beltran all in the lineup? Just to spite the closed-caption typists for covering up the batting average at the sports bar.

Demondre Arnold

Two more effective and scoreless innings for Arnold in the middle of the slugfest down in the desert – including 3 more K’s. He has 16 Ks (vs. 5 BBs) through his first 15.1 innings of pro ball. Gotta love what the teenaged pitchers are doing down in Scottsdale.

BTW, his middle name is Jernard – is that the new Nuschler?

At least it will be fun to watch Fresno play ball again

Crawford looked pretty good until his last 0-4 outing but even with that result he’s at .250.

I’m guessing Belt will eat minor league pitching for breakfast, lunch, and dinner again once he gets going. Not concerned about that.

I’m really looking forward to Crawford taking a deep breath, compacting his swing, and getting in a proper rhythm. He had moments where he looked great but then Zito-like his calm shattered and he turned into a disaster all over again.

Any way you slice it, Fresno got a big offensive boost.

Sadly, the Bermuda Triangle of Huff, Cabrera, and Tejada is what we have to work with in San Francisco. Pepper that with a little bit of love from LOLRowand and KKKKody Ross and.

Nevermind I quit. I can’t make that funny.
