Great stuff. One of their songs (not Radar Love, but a great song nonetheless) came up on my Grooveshark the other day and it was so damn awesome.

Dvd/Netflix: West Wing Season 2 (rewatching, I just downloaded the whole mess.)
App: the SBNation App, obviously. Obviously.

Video game: League of Legends. It’s pretty frighteningly addictive, to the point where I’ve made a vow to myself to only play on weekends or with the lady friend.
Books: rereading Tad Williams’s Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn “trilogy.” It’s fantasy comfort-food basically.

Heroes of Newerth is better
LoL has some pretty shitty elements to it, and personally I had issues with the graphics. Normally that’s not something I care about, but they were bad enough that I couldn’t direct some moves. I don’t know if they still have the in-game bonuses for more experienced players, but if they do that’s pretty awful as well.
None of this matters, though, because when Dota 2 comes out it’s going to stomp everything.

Maybe it’s just because I’ve been arguing about gender issues in a fantasy series for the past three days, but that sounds kinda interesting.
by Lies and Perfidy on Aug 31, 2011 10:17 AM PDT up reply actions
I’m writing a spec pilot that’s all about gender issues and I think I’ve settled on testosterone being the substance that drives the plot. There’s a lot of anecdotal and ethnographic research on top of the biochemical studies. Interesting so far. Some good ideas have come from it.

Excellent type coverage, my Ninjask can Baton Pass Speed Boosts to cover its awful speed, and the Porygon2 is a Trick Room user so even when Ninjask goes down I can compensate for the speed. It’s pretty bulky and hits like a truck (apparently; I haven’t started building the team yet) and with two ways to fix the speed problem I figure he’ll work out quite nicely.

Oh
And Magic Guard negates the Sandstorm damage from Tyranitar’s Sand Stream so 4/6 are Sandstorm immune (and of course Garchomp gets 20% evasion and Excadrill gets double speed in sand). Apparently it negates poison/burn damage as well.

Side Note: Has anyone else played the new OOTPs? I got the free version (8) which I greatly enjoyed, and since then have played 11 and 12 which both had some great elements, but had some serious problems. In my 12 franchise I just had three straight seasons of 100+ wins, yet my attendance isn’t great because I traded a couple players (while retaining a lot more – Cain, Lincecum, Bumgarner, Romo, Posey, Belt, Sandoval are all still on the team in 2016). I also apparently have to offer these idiots $30M a year to extend them, which wouldn’t be so bad if my budget ever went up. And maybe it wouldn’t happen if the other teams weren’t giving out those kind of deals – at least I assume they are, because I’m one of something like five teams out of 30 that is operating at a profit, so I can’t trade Bryce Harper (with a 1.000 OPS) because he’s making $10M and no one has any money. Not to mention every one of my seasons seems to play out like this one for the Giants from an injury standpoint. I like that the scouting is consolidated and a lot of other things, but the drawbacks keep pushing me toward OOTP 8.

I have OOTP 11 and I love it
I do go very slow with it (I play out every game from a managerial aspect), so I’m not that far ahead. Financials always seem to be a problem, even in OOTP 8- I took 4 years rebuilding the Giants, won the World Series, and had my fan interest go up to 10 out of 100. Woohoo! I have not encountered those problems, yet, and my injuries seems realistic enough. I do love both versions though

The 3 artists currently getting the most play on your musical device? Our “musical device” is a CD player in the living room; it is a 7-disc changer currently loaded with a variety of assorted chamber music, mostly string quartets.

What books are you reading? Being at present compelled to be a valetudinarian (c.f. The Sign of the Four), I am re-reading some “comfort books”, having moved from Roderick Alleyn to Gervase Fen, which is sort of from the sublime to the ridiculous. When healthier, I explore candidates for this list.

You know
I never found Conan Doyle’s novels to be anywhere near as good as his short stories. Holmes doesn’t need 200 pages to figure out who did it.
Seth Rosin can hit the side of a barn with a baseball. From space.
Giants baseball: We're stupid enough to WIN that (TM)
I'm inclined to agree.
I think as Doyle was breaking into the publishing world, novels were what were wanted. I agree that he found his pace in the short stories. They are today valued, I’d say, for different reasons than they were when first published; back then, they were seen as very clever puzzles, but today their chief attraction is as tickets to a world in which “it is always 1895” (as Vincent Starrett famously put it).
I think the best overall edition, as to both textual purity and enlightening background information and critical analysis, is clearly the Oxford Sherlock Holmes set, which can be had used for (so Bookfinder tells me) as little as about a hundred bucks (not bad for 8 hardcover books).
