minor lines, 8/29/11
Monday highlights from the Giants' farm: Gary Brown had three XBH, Francisco Peguero homered among three hits, Alex Burg homered twice, Shawn Sanford had 8.0 perfect IP before a 9th inning single, and Raymundo Montero had 5.0 perfect IP.
AAA: Fresno lost to Reno 5-2Fresno: RF Justin Christian: 1 for 2, 2 BB, E
Fresno: SS Brandon Crawford: 1 for 2, BB, CS, E
Fresno: SP Geno Espineli: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 K--1 HR
Batting leadoff, Christian reached base three times. Crawford reached base twice. He has hit .253/.314/.337 in 95 AB since returning to the minors.
Espineli made his third start. With 3 BB and 1 K, his K/BB ratio in ten appearances since the all-star break dipped below 1.00.
AA: Richmond defeated New Britain 10-5
(after scoring five runs in the 6th inning)
Richmond: 2B Charlie Culberson: 3 for 5, 2B
Richmond: RF Francisco Peguero: 3 for 5, HR
Richmond: SP Justin Fitzgerald: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 K--1 HB, 1 WP
Peguero and Culberson paced the Flying Squirrels' fifteen-hit attack with three hits apiece. The Squirrels had just two XBH, though, with Peguero's 5th HR and Culberson's 30th double.
Despite issuing five free passes, Fitzgerald had a quality start to even his W-L record at 9-9. He threw 96 pitches (57 strikes).
A+: San Jose defeated Rancho Cucamonga 7-4
San Jose: CF Gary Brown: 4 for 5, 3B, 2 2B, SO
San Jose: DH Alex Burg: 2 for 5, 2 HR, 2 SO
San Jose: SP Andrew Reichard: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 6 K--2 HR, 1 WP
San Jose: RP Addison Proszek: 2.0 IP, 3 K
Rancho Cucamonga: SP Chris Reed: 2.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
Brown, Dave Flemming's player of the game, had another outstanding performance with his fifth straight multi-hit game. He now has 58 XBH this year as part of a .338/.407/.518 performance. Burg had his 12th and 13th HRs, raising his SLG to nearly .550 through 238 AB.
Reichard came up short of a quality start but did have his sixth straight start with 6.0+ IP. Proszek had 3 K in 2.0 perfect IP. Reed, whom the Dodgers selected 16th overall this year, made his second pro start. He struck out five of his eleven batters but allowed five of the other six batters to reach base. Dave Flemming was perhaps particularly impressed that Brown got two XBH against the Stanford-produced Reed.
A-: Augusta defeated Greenville 1-0
Augusta: 1B Ryan Scoma: 2 for 3, BB
Augusta: SP Shawn Sanford: 8.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 K
Scoma had two of the GreenJackets' six hits, but his AVG remains below .250.
After 8.0 perfect IP, Sanford allowed a leadoff single in the 9th inning. He then retired the final batter he faced on a fly ball--one of just two fly ball outs (14/2 GO/FO line). He lowered his league-leading ERA below 2.50.
ssA: Salem-Keizer had a scheduled off-day
(their third of three off-days this summer)
R: Giants defeated Athletics 5-3 (10 innings)
Scottsdale: SS Kelby Tomlinson: 2 for 2, BB, 3 SB
Scottsdale: SP Raymundo Montero: 5.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
Tomlinson reached base in all three plate appearances, finishing the AZL season with three straight multi-hit games and a .357/.417/.543 line in 140 AB, plus an 11/2 SB/CS line. Most of the rookie Giants starters were removed at the end of the 6th inning.
Montero had suffered poor results as a reliever this year with an ERA bove 10.00 in eleven relief appearances; but, making his first start, he had 5.0 perfect IP, which included a 10/1 GO/FO line.

AZL Giants in the playoffs
The AZL Giants are hosting the Reds in the semifinals of the AZL postseason as I type this sentence. No prior word, but it appears that the Giants have set up their rotation to have HS stud Clayton Blackburn start today’s game. Good luck Giants!

If they win today’s game, the Giants will host the 1 game winner-take-all championship tomorrow. They’ll play the winner of the Dodgers vs. Rangers game that is being played right now.

Giants still up 2-1 through 5
Taking after the SF Giants too much with a low-scoring nail-biter. I can confrim that Blackburn did get the start in today’s game – from his twitter account.

Giants break it open, up 8-2 through 6
Reds scored 1 run in the top of the 6th to tie it up at 2-2. Not sure if Blackburn was still in the game at that point. Giants take a NOT page from their SF owners and put up a 6-spot on the board in the bottom of the 6th.

yeah blackburn gave up the tying run on 2 doubles
not that it ended up mattering. Sim singled, Blair doubled, Mergenthaler walked loading the bases, Barnett hit a sac fly, Nicholson walked loading the bases again, Paulino flied out, Tomlinson walked scoring a run, and then Yarrow hit a grand slam…

Oh, I see they've got a ply-by-play for the game
Blackburn went 6 full innings, gave up 2 R (both earned), 7 hits, 0 BB, 5 Ks – will be the WP if Giants hold on.
Marlowe went 1 inning, gave up 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB
Demondre Arnold just finished his first inning – 3 up, 3 down with 0 BB, 0 K.
LOL, Reds have a relief pitcher with the unfortunate last name of YARD! I can hear the game call now…

Fodgers up 3-2 in the top of the 9th. Rangers have one more set of ABs in bottom of the 9th to tie or win the game.

do we have any idea who's gonna start that game?
by you'vejustbeenCAINED on Aug 30, 2011 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions
I was just looking at that myself
The logical choice would be Joan Gregorio (on 4 days rest), although he got shelled in only 2.2 innings of work in his last start.
Escobar and Bean are the other 2 logical options, although Escobar has been used in relief recently. Paul Davis would have been the ideal guy, but he’s in S-K now. Arnold “started” 1 game recently, but he went 1 inning today, so he’s out. Kyle Crick would be another possible longshot.
If they really are serious about ending their championship game drought, they can always let Josh Osich pitch in his pro debut.

Reading between the lines of tweets and Facebook entries, Osich has been in Scottsdale for at least 10 days. Still no word on his health, though.

My guess would be...
Gregorio for 3-5 innings then turn it over to several of Escobar, Crick, Law, Marlowe, Ferrer, and Arnold to close it out.

More Sanford
According to the milb.com article, Sanford is the first pitcher in the long history of the Sally to take a perfect game into the 9th inning. Two pitcher have pitched perfect games in the Sally, but one was a 7 inning game and the other was a 5 inning game. Before we get too excited about Sanford’s future, both of those perfect game pitchers never even made it to the major leagues.

What's the deal with Sanford?
I take it he’s not a hot prospect, because I haven’t seen him talked about much. And the Giants must not think much of him, either, because in spite of his fantastic season in the Sally League (which he’s too old for), he was never promoted. So, what’s wrong with him? Low velocity guy getting inexperienced hitters out with offspeed stuff, perhaps?
Apparently he relies mainly on a good sinking FB, so he’s not even an offspeed artist. It’s tough for a starter at his age and with that profile to make it to the majors. Not impossible, but don’t hold your breath. One other thing that he does have going for him is that he doesn’t give up many walks. His 1.6 BB/9 this season compares very favorably to the 3.2 BB/9 that he posted in his previous 2 pro seasons in 62.1 innings as (mainly) a reliever.

Augusta playoff chase update...
Augusta forged back into a tie for the 2nd half division lead with their win last night. Augusta has 2 chances of making the playoffs this season.
1. They can win the 2nd half division crown outright (they’re tied for the lead now). Augusta has 1 game left at Greenville tonight then close out the season with 5 games against Rome in Augusta. Rome is one of the weaker teams in the league, so the Greenjackets have that in their favor. Sadly, the team they’re curently tied with, Savannah, ends their season against Lexington which has been worse than Rome in the 2nd half of the season. Complicating the picure is the fact that Augsta’s best player, Adam Duvall, has been held out for the last 2 games, so it’s possible that he may have reinjured his hammy.
2. They can win the wildcard by having the 2nd best overall record in their division. Right now they are 5 games behind Greenville in the race for the 2nd best record, with only 6 games left to play, so the odds of them qualifying in this manner are next to zero.

Augusta?
holy hell, do they have any regular hitting over 260?
And they might make the playoffs? Que vida loca.
Duvall’s been raking this year: .287/.389/.538/.927
Lollis has been doing relatively nicely in a reduced role : .313/.389/.415 /.804
However, as usual for a Giant affiliate, it’s all about the good SP and good pen for Augusta.

It wasn’t his hammy. Billy Buyler tweeted it the day he went out, and I want to say it was a wrist or hand injury, but I can’t remember for certain.
Josh Mazzola is also done for the year. So they’re limping a bit to the finish line.

Would seem so, but I can’t remember the last time that the Giants sent a talked-about #1 draft pick out to Augusta for a few games in September. Sabes & Co. like for the fans and owners to get a chance to see the top picks in SJ.

True, although it’s pretty hard to remember the last time Augusta was in the playoffs and SK wasn’t, so it’s hard to tell exactly what their approach might be. My memory’s fuzzy, but I that might have been true in 2008 when SK ended in a tie for first place, but that Augusta roster was so stacked that I don’t know who they would have wanted to added. Runzler and Surkamp were both in SK that year. And Buster Posey played in SK for a couple of days, but it seems to me that he went straight to IL and skipped both Augusta and SJ’s playoffs that year.
Peguero played in the Cal league playoffs in 2009 even though Augusta also made playoffs that year, and I can’t remember if they just promoted him to SJ and blew off the Sally, or if he played in the Sally first round, Augusta got eliminated, and then he came up to SJ for the Cal championship series (for which he was MVP). I think the latter is true.
All of this would be easier if BBRef or MiLB or anybody frankly would make publicly available rosters and stats from their post-seasons. If those things are available anywhere, I haven’t found them.
MY DAD WAS WRONG!
MY BOY NEEDS TO THROW HARDER!
Off the top of my head, I can’t remember if Pegs was sent to SJ during or after the Sally playoffs in 2009. I’m 99.9% sure that Posey was sent from S-K to SJ in time for the playoffs in 2008.

Can’t remember. I have a playoffs page listed for him that year but there’s no data in it, which either means he didn’t play in any playoff games or I got lazy. But I have trouble believing I’d be indifferent tohis performance in a playoff setting. He played in the short lived Hawaiian Fall league that year so I think they might hav wanted to give him a break before he started off for Honolulu

Salem-Keizer playoff chase update...
The Volcanoes have 5 games left in he regular season – all away games against Tri-City. The odds of them making them playoffs are very slim. They have 2 ways to get into the postseason.
1. They can win the 2nd half division crown outright. Right now they are in 3rd place, 3 games back of Eugene, with 5 games to play. Everett is in 2nd place only 1 game back of Eugene. The odds of them making up that much ground on both teams in only 5 gaves are very slim.
2. They can end up with the 2nd best season-long overall record in their division (if Eugene wins the 2nd half crown). Right now they trail Vancouver by 5 games with only 5 games to play, but they hold the tie-breaker advantage. If S-K wins all 5 of their remaining games, and Vancouver loses all 5 of theirs, then S-K will qualify for the playoffs if Eugene holds on to win the 2nd half crown.

Right there with you. Interesting to note, if they don’t make the playoffs the bus will drop them off at the airport in Portland and the boys won’t be back in Keizer. They dropped off their personal bags at the stadium yesterday and they will be driven to the airport to meet the players on their way home.

In all fairness to the Giants
I’ll bet the vast, vast majority of the players wanted it this way. Why spend an extra 12-24 hours in Keizer when you can get down to Scottsdale or back home that much quicker? Not to mention that they would most likely have been responsible for paying their own way to the Portland Airport (1 hour drive) if the team bus had dropped them off back in Keizer. The team bus will be going right past the Portland Airport on the way back from Tri-Cities.

Players have no choice. Giants pick up the cost of travel with the exception of extra or overweight bags. I was more concerned about the potential long travel day, play the game then bus to Portland and then fly back to wherever. Could be brutal for some.

That’s a really bad trait for the minor league talent expert on a national website to have. I don’t understand why he seems to get so emotionally involved in his evalutaions. Maybe it’s all a ploy and he’s just using it to drive traffic to the site, but it doesn’t seem that way. John Sickels is an example that KLaw should try to learn from on this issue.

It definitely drives traffic. Snark is his act to a certain degree and it’s a successful one. Though I’m not sure I’d say he gets emotionally involved — being dispassionate is part of it as well. And I get it in a sense: baseball is a longview business so you should be blown about in your opinions. Also, he’s frequently funny, for which I’ll forgive most anything.
Also, you may have noticed that his employer has little taste for moderate opinions.

I like him for a many of the reasons you list. I also like him because he gets it that things like wins and RBI’s are out-of-date statistics.
When it comes to evaluating minor league talent, however, it’s hard to see why anyone would be so unwilling to change his or her opinion.

I would think most of these guys are at a point
where they get that RBI, batting average, and wins are out of date stats (some moreso than others, obviously).
Of course, the concept is completely foreign to the Giants front office.
Called him a 5th starter in a neutral park, will probably look a little better in a park like SF.

TORRES is HORRID!!
OBP% of .314 is un…fucking…acceptable
odd place to be leaving that comment
But two things:
1. Putting % at the end of OBP is like saying PIN number.
2. His playing time has been wildly inconsistent and even then, .314 is still substantially better than about half of our starting lineup.
Peguero has been hot in August, and I really like him for the TOOLS, but holy crap at his 1.9% walk-rate.

doesn't he have a 317 BA and a 327 OBP?
Sigh
Damn Giants
His minor league lines throughout his career are really pretty amazingly consistent. They’re always somewhere in the range of .320/.350/.450.
All I know is when we get to the Community Prospect List and people start saying that he’ll get eaten alive in the majors with that approach, I’m going to remind them that they said that about AA as well, and he’s putting up a 115 or so wRC+. Even gotten his contact rate to improve (K rate around 14% in AA).

Not quite that low
But Doug Glanville walked 16 times in 449 PAs (3.5%) for Iowa in 1995. He went on to be a slightly below average hitter in the majors. The comparison’s not perfect, of course. Glanville played a good defensive CF, but he also didn’t have nearly the power that Peguero does. And Peguero is hitting much better than Glanville was when he was 23 at the same level.
Nice find. But is a .277/.315/.380 hitter in the late 90s-early 2000s really a “slightly below average hitter”? His career wRC+ was 81.
One could reasonably hope that Peguero would be able to add a little batting average and a little power to Glanville’s numbers, of course.
You want to say more than "slightly"?
OK. I was mainly just looking at his first few years in the majors, before he mysteriously became terrible. He really just completely turned into a pumpkin when the calendar struck 2000. .325/.376/.457 in 1999 down to .275/.307/.374 in 2000, and 2000 was the best season he would have the rest of his career, which lasted a surprisingly long time after that. I guess he was a good defender, but still.
Anyway, yeah, I think Peguero should be able to hit a bit better than Glanville did, but of course he’s not adding the premium defensive skills to the package either. I guess he probably should be a good replacement for Schierholtz in a year or two.
I can find a decent amount of successful players with around 3% in AA or higher. Many you can probably guess (Dunston, Templeton, Mondesi) and some you might not (Joe Carter, Ralph Garr). But like all of life’s greatest mysteries the best answer to your question is no doubt: Pedro Feliz.

A few guys with good careers there, but also some real cringers.
Peguero’s going to have to keep proving it to me, but so far he’s been up to that task.
Juan "Doesn't Cheat The Game" Perez, future CF for the World Champion San Francisco Giants.
"And besides, if I wanted to participate in a mindless patriotic ritual where my voice isn’t really heard, I would vote." - Chris Marcil
He needs to improve that aspect of his game to be valuable, of this there is no doubt. But I really do believe at this point his floor is to be one of those major league “cringers”. He’s got a string of .300 seasons behind him in he minors and he’s going to get his chance, and probably have a .300 season at some point and then when people like Sabes make ridiculous trades to obtain him they’ll say “we’re getting a proven .300 hitter.”

His BB/K is a little over half the SJ number
His ISO is down as well, though that may be more park stuff than anything. He’s not getting eaten alive in AA because he has a .356 BABIP – I would expect him to beat .300, but not by that much, and there’s still some pretty significant differences between AA and the majors. He’s doing better than I thought he would in AA from a wOBA standpoint, but that’s almost entirely BA-driven. He could still become a successful major leaguer just off that batting average, but being so BABIP dependent is going to make him an extremely volatile and unpredictable player if he’s not flat-out awful. I don’t see a future for him where he’s a regular part of a winning club for more than a year at a time.

Weird Giants prospect note from the past
Matt Moore is coming up just a little short of leading the minors in Ks three years in a row, and the other day BA did some digging and the only other pitcher they could find since WWII who had led the minors in Ks in successive years was our own John D’Aquisto, who went on to win a half a Rookie of the Year award at the age of 22 and then pretty much never be any good again ever.
In D’Aquisto’s third year in that run he struck out 185 in the PCL. Must have been fairly close to the minors lead that year as well.
MY DAD WAS WRONG!
MY BOY NEEDS TO THROW HARDER!
I saw that too.
It would have been nice to see what John D’ could have been if he hadn’t messed up his arm so early in major league career.

Am I the only person who thinks Peguero should be given a try in the big leagues pretty soon here?
I just don’t see what other options we have if we have any chance of making the playoffs.
I can’t see how he doesn’t get called up to SF in Sept. as soon as Richmond is eliminated. He’s on the 40-man roster, so it should be a no-brainer for Sabes and Boch.

Frankly,
given the ineptitude and general poor demeanor of virtually everyone who wields a bat in the Giants clubhouse, I think it’s tantamount to throwing in the towel not calling him (and Crawford) up by tomorrow’s playoff roster deadline. The only way the Giants pull off the impossible is with some greatly needed infusion of energy – and the banishment of some dead weight.

The Giants (and every major league team that participates) have to supply at least 5 players (maybe it’s 6) to begin with. They can pull some guys out after the league begins

Each Major League team provides seven players who team up to fill the 35-man roster of each team. Also, each club can opt to send up to two players below Double-A.
by you'vejustbeenCAINED on Aug 30, 2011 3:32 PM PDT up reply actions
Just to clarify, the lower-minor player, or players, are part of the group of 7 players in total.
As an aside, I just realized that the Giants FO made a mistake by naming Crawdaddy so quickly. What if the Giants come back and make the playoffs? If Cabrera or Tejada gets hurt you have to think that Crawdaddy will take a spot on the postseason roster. If the Giants make a deep run into the postseason then Crawdaddy won’t be in the AFL. Did Sabes & Co. just admit that they don’t think the Giants have a chance to win it all this year?

I was going to mention him and Tommy Boy, but with Derek Norris and Hank Conger on the roster neither one would get any PT. Not to mention that Schulman tweeted the Giants have 4 pitchers, 1 infielder and 1 outfielder as placeholders in addition to Crawdaddy. A catcher doesn’t fit into that.

Not sure about Hembree
And no real reason why Jurica over Adrianza, though Ehire would probably prefer to play on a team in Venezuela

I don’t see Jurica when they have Culberson and Panik, and Jurica would be well behind Duvall and Adrianza in my opinion.
As for Verdugo, he’s going to be hitting 140 innings by the time Richmond ends it’s season, so he’s just not going to be available. He’s never thrown more than 62 innings in a single season before.

The Scorpions have to be a favorite to repeat as champs. Check out their prelim roster:
CF: Mike Trout, RF: Bryce Harper, LF: (Frankie Pegs or Gary Brown)?
C: Hank Conger, Derek Norris
1B: Cody Overbeck, (Brandon Belt?)
2B: Crawdaddy, (Culberson?)
SS: Crawdaddy, Jean Segura
3B: Will Middlebrooks
The only name on the Pitching staff that stands out to me is Sammy Solis. I’m sure the Giants will send at least 3 good pitchers out of the 4.

i was thinking the same thing
about the pitching staff as it’s currently listed. But of course, leave it up to the giants to contribute the pitching for that team. looks damn good to me.
by you'vejustbeenCAINED on Aug 30, 2011 4:07 PM PDT up reply actions
In looking at Giant pitchers, they would have to be a reliever or a starter with less than about 60 innings on their arms this season. They’re not going to send any starter that has thrown 90 or more innings. Also, look for starters that were injured this year, but might be healthy by Octover. My guesses would be 4 from this group of names:
Dan Runzler, Edlefsen, Hembree, Dunnington, Michael Main, Rosin, Jorge Bucardo, Josh Osich, Jose Casilla.
It looks like they really need a 2B, so i’m guessing that the 2nd IF after Crawdaddy wil be Cluberson or (hold your breath) Joe Panik. I’m thinking that they might ask Belt to go to some Winter league like the DR or Venezuela.

Bucardo wouldn’t surprise me, since he hasn’t gotten a chance to pitch all year. Casilla, too, missed significant time to injury so I’d expect to see him in the AFL.
Jose Flores: .831 OPS in High-A last year. .529 OPS this year. Ouch.

Casills’s only 3 months removed from TJ surgery. He hasn’t even started rehab, much less be ready for pitching off mounds. Bucardo I don know what his injury is, but it’s no stretch to imagine he’s a ways away from competition too.

I didn’t know that Casilla had TJ, so he’s out as an option. I threw in Bucardo, but obviously he only gets considered if he’s healthy enough – same goes for Osich.

Brown gets an edge for hype, and being a high draft bonus baby.
If I had to guess I would go with Pegs just because he would be a better fit in LF than Brown.

Historically, the Giants send players that may have missed some time due to injury (Crawford and Joe Martinez in 2009 – Frandsen in 2008) and I can remember only once (Posey) when a player was sent to the AFL after their first full season.

He could be the A-ball exception, and since he has missed time with injury may do him some good.

Duval is doubtful. He would require an exemption and he’s not going to get much PT playing behind Middlebrook. Now, if the Giants are willing to have him play 2B then it might be an option.
