Next year with Freddy and Posey, maybe Beltran back, Pablo, Nate, maybe Kepp, and Belt, when we got to Houston, the Giants need to annihilate the Stros like 21 – 3

It remains a legitimate point.

by Ursa Major on Aug 28, 2011 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions

No it doesn't

Romo was in his first game back. And I’d have pulled him against the lefty in that situation anyway.

Affeldt has been a guy that is about the same against righties as lefties. Had there been a runner at second, Bochy might have gone to Ramirez. As he is now.

by lexluth7 on Aug 28, 2011 3:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Romo is considerably better against LHB than Affeldt is against RHP.

Romo career FIP against LHB: 2.81
Affeldt career FIP against RHB: 4.11
Affeldt career FIP against LHB: 4.15

by Ursa Major on Aug 28, 2011 4:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Affeldt versus righties

Only thing that matters in that situation is batting average agaisnt, as a walk wouldn’t hurt much (runner on second two down). They are about the same in that situation. (Affeldt .236 versus righties Romo .237 versus lefties) I forget who the hitter was, but obviously they felt better about Affeldt against that hitter (or the right handed pinch hitter) than they did about Romo versus the lefty.I think that is based on the notion, right or wrong, that with Romo’s best pitch being the slider, lefties see it pretty well.

One day the guy may be a closer somewhere. Then we will get our answer. i just don’t know if he can handle it physically. His numbers sure indicate that he should get the chance.

Affeldt got out of that inning so I’m not sure why the argument. Romo wasn’t going two innings anyway. Under any circumstances. He’s just off the DL.

by lexluth7 on Aug 28, 2011 4:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Right, Affeldt is about the same against both, which is to say, nowhere near as good as Romo is against both.

Yeah, Huff got a 2 year deal. We traded for Beltran, but it’s no where near mortgaging the future like the Pence deal was. We were gonna be stuck with Rowand and Zito anyways.

We’ll still have our pitchers, hopefully a healthy Posey, Panda, and Belt.

It takes time to learn to hit in the majors

People expecting Belt to be a savior at this point are expecting too much. I understand the why orf it d- hell we are desperate. But he’s going to struggle a bit. Thing is – he has a terrific future. And the present is not bad.

by lexluth7 on Aug 28, 2011 4:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Totally agreed

The thing about racing through the minors in a year is that the opposition (especially the higher quality AA+ pitchers) haven’t had time to locate your holes and exploit them.

Moral of the story (and one I hope they’ll learn from for Brown) is that one year of tearing up the minors doesn’t a major league ready player make.

by sarf_london_niner on Aug 28, 2011 4:27 PM PDT up reply actions

You’re aware that he’s been well above average this year, right?

by El Person on Aug 28, 2011 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions

He’s below average for his position over the season, and (straw-hat) it appears like he’s been slightly figured out – his seasonal figures probably don’t match up to his current level of performance against wiser pitchers.

Major league ready was the wrong term though, you are right. He’s clearly stilll above replacement level. But using him this way is a waste of his arb-clock. You really can’t tell how long stuff like this take – has Belt ever had to reevaluate his swing before? This is the sort of stuff you want to get out of the way before you come up.

Belt’s going to be a really, really good player, but he isn’t one yet.

Exactly

Now that a couple of injuries have exposed the complete lack of organizational depth at really any position (besides having three top flight starters and one journeyman having a career year), it’s getting more and more frustrating that they had such success with such seemingly minor roster adjustments.

You have a point

The Giants just don’t seem to have those type at bats very often. Particularly in key situations. It’s usually a first pitch out. And then there is the Rowand three hack and sit.

That spot in the order struck out 5 times. All together I think they swund and missed about 11 times. There are teams that don’t do that in a game.

I have a hard time getting angry at the umps in this game when the Giants get 1 hit off of Norris

in the first 6 innings. The way this tam has played the last month, if the Astros are the worst team in the league, the Giants may be second worst. A horrendous offense, bad defense, a broken bullpen and station to station baserunning cannot be saved by Timmeh, Matt, Vogie and MadBum.
