Yes, please. Things I'm aware of:

  • Eric Surkamp is 24, which is a bit old for a pitcher who hasn't pitched above AA.
  • The Eastern League is a pitchers' league.

Something else I'm aware of.

  • Dan Runzler could walk Wily Mo Pena five times in the same game

So if I'm looking to win a game, here's my organizational preference:

Lincecum
Cain
Bumgarner
Vogelsong
Sanchez
Surkamp
Zito
Runzler
Uh, I don't know, like, Matt Yourkin?
Ryan Verdugo
Here be dragons

And it isn't especially close, though I could be talked into Runzler over Zito, and possibly Surkamp over Sanchez depending on how tomorrow's start goes. Even without that, though, I'm almost certain that Surkamp is one of the five best healthy starting pitchers in the Giants organization. It doesn't hurt that he seems like a swell guy, too. Can't wait to watch him pitch.

J. Sanchez is going to be pissed if this guy sticks like Vogelsong did after Zito got hurt.

I think the Giants would love for SurKKKKKKKKKKKKamp to stick

so they can shed Sanchez’s arb 3 salary.

I would hold off on that. Surkamp still needs to prove he can pitch above AA before we anoint him.

It’s the 5th starter spot, they could sign someone if they need to.

That is cray-z.

Right

Sanchez is in his last year of arb. Zito, for better or worse, is already paid for.

by taliesin on Aug 26, 2011 4:19 PM PDT up reply actions

He won’t get much of a raise this year. His salary is also a sort of investment into his upside. One year contracts don’t hamstring the payroll, especially since the WS money will have fully percolated through the organization by next year.

My adopted Giant, the young Reinier Roibal

by garbanzo24 on Aug 26, 2011 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions

It doesn't hamstring the payroll

But that’s an extra $8M. That could buy a SS and a backup C.

by taliesin on Aug 26, 2011 4:23 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t think either of those will be necessary next year. The organizational options (Crawford and Hector Sanchez) will have graduated, or be close to doing so. Your point about the money is well taken, but it’s my belief that an $8 million investment in Sanchez is about as good as we can get.

My adopted Giant, the young Reinier Roibal

by garbanzo24 on Aug 26, 2011 4:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m pretty sure Sanchez can cover his salary over Zito. I imagine he won’t get a huge raise in arb, so he really only needs to stay healthy.

Yeah, but they might get it for less than 6-7 million

Look what happened with Voglesong. And while Voglesong is absolutely been the exception and I do not ever expect them to get a pitcher like that on a minor league FA deal, they have generally done well with Minor league deals lately.

Uribe, Voglesong, Torres all huge contributors signed for nothing the past two years. I am probably forgetting someone. seems like there was someone else.

by El Person on Aug 26, 2011 4:13 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t see that argument at all. Surkamp should probably start next year in AAA, barring injuries. If the Giants do face some injuries, Surkamp is a perfectly capable 6th starter. Zito is really the expendable one.

My adopted Giant, the young Reinier Roibal

by garbanzo24 on Aug 26, 2011 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions

That doesn't make sense

Counting Surkamp, there will be seven starters next year. Surkamp can stay in the minors. Obviously the front four are here to stay. It comes down to Sanchez and Zito. Zito’s a sunk cost and Sanchez isn’t. They can get something for Sanchez and nothing for Zito. Why would they keep Sanchez?

"Lee pitches...Renteria hits a high drive, deep left-center field, David Murphy going back, he's on the warning track—it is...go-one!"

by El Person on Aug 26, 2011 4:22 PM PDT up reply actions

If they can make a trade for Sanchez and get fair value, then it’s fine. I imagine that Sanchez has more value to the Giants than anyone else right now, though. However, and his might sound like a weird thing to say, the money isn’t an enormous problem. A one year contract doesn’t have much risk, and a good Sanchez is well worth the gamble.

My adopted Giant, the young Reinier Roibal

by garbanzo24 on Aug 26, 2011 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions

I think that they should keep sanchez for next year, start him for the first half, see if he can bounce back to better form and then trade him mid-season. there’s alwasy plenty of contenders looking for pitching. Let Surkamp start the season in AAA then bring him up when Sanchy leaves. Obviously you don’t keep sanchez past next year cause FA/Boras.

And yes i am totally ignoring Zito. He is not an ML starter anymore.

by you'vejustbeenCAINED on Aug 26, 2011 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions

This

Unless SurKKKamp just destroys ML hitters this year and forces the Giants hands I see no reason why we shouldn’t employ this plan.

Zito is a sunk cost. Let him pitch from the bullpen and fill in when injuries occur. SurKKKamp pitches in AAA and see how things sit in July.

by VizquelQuest on Aug 26, 2011 6:22 PM PDT up reply actions

He doesn’t have value to the Giants because he’s an extra starter. Teams don’t keep six starters because it’s pointless and the sixth starter should be turned into something useful. Sanchez is that sixth starter.

"Lee pitches...Renteria hits a high drive, deep left-center field, David Murphy going back, he's on the warning track—it is...go-one!"

by El Person on Aug 26, 2011 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions

If the Giants keep Sanchez, he’s not the sixth starter. He is the sixth starter in the offseason, perhaps by monetary necessity, but when the roster breaks down, he’s still the fifth best pitcher in the organization. If everyone breaks camp healthy, Zito can be released, Surkamp is the 6th starter in the minors, and the Giants go on their merry way.

My adopted Giant, the young Reinier Roibal

by garbanzo24 on Aug 26, 2011 4:39 PM PDT up reply actions

It would be stupid to keep Sanchez over Zito.

"Lee pitches...Renteria hits a high drive, deep left-center field, David Murphy going back, he's on the warning track—it is...go-one!"

I disagree.

My adopted Giant, the young Reinier Roibal

by garbanzo24 on Aug 26, 2011 4:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I've gathered as much

I’ve explained why it would be stupid. Keeping Sanchez would cost more than Zito, because Zito is a sunk cost and Sanchez is not. Sanchez would bring something in return, and Zito would not.

"Lee pitches...Renteria hits a high drive, deep left-center field, David Murphy going back, he's on the warning track—it is...go-one!"

by El Person on Aug 26, 2011 4:55 PM PDT up reply actions

If you want to trade Sanchez, you’re going to have to at least submit a contract offer. If the Giants don’t get anything of value for Sanchez, which is very likely, the Giants will keep him, and the team is better served paying and playing Sanchez.

My adopted Giant, the young Reinier Roibal

by garbanzo24 on Aug 26, 2011 5:47 PM PDT up reply actions

It is only stupid to keep Sanchez if there is a player that would provide more value who could be signed for the money he would make.

Until Rowand and Zito come off the books there probably isn’t enough cash to get a real impact player. I’d rather see Sabean make some short minor moves until they are gone, so we aren’t stuck with another Rowand.

Clutching at straws

http://www.daytondailynews.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/dayton/cincinnatireds/entries/2011/08/26/will_hernandez_be_traded_to_th.html

Early this week, [Ramon] Hernandez was placed on waivers, meaning any team could claim him and his contract for the rest of the season. The Reds could let him go to any team claiming him or they could withdraw waivers if somebody claimed him and make a trade with the team that claimed him.

On Friday morning, the Reds withdrew the waivers, meaning somebody probably tried to claim him, probably the San Francisco Giants. The Reds and Giants still could make a trade involving Hernandez.

They have 48 hours after withdrawing waivers to make a trade and, surprise, surprise, a San Francisco scout was at Friday’s game.

And a deal would have to be made before September 1 to make it worth San Francisco’s while. A player has to be on the 25-man roster by August 31 to eligible for the playoffs.

"Everybody goes through waivers," said manager Dusty Baker. "Happens all year long. Who claimed Hernandez? I’d guess it was the Giants."

They might be Giants...but they are definitely WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS.

I kind of felt like he was being too patient and he was sitting on good pitches that he probably should have swung at, but the overall production was still among the team leaders while he was up the first time and he basically duplicated Posey’s production from the year before in each players first 30 games.

All that said, being too patient is not a problem for a young player, especially on a team that can’t hit and is even more challenged at taking walks.

To be eligible for a team’s playoff roster a player must be on any of the following: (a) the 25 man active roster, (b) the disabled list, © the bereavement list, or (d) the suspended list as of August 31 at midnight

In other news

http://sfgiants.box.net is useless for breaking news. Why does the team bother with a press box site when it runs 90 minutes behind?

by Ian A on Aug 26, 2011 5:04 PM PDT up reply actions

If the Twitter feed is more immediate, then maybe you could use that and not complain about the press box site. I think that’s intended to be more a repository (and corporate sponsor thing) than a up-to-the-minute news source.

Reminiscing on 2010

Remember this debate?

Bench Molina for Buster Posey. It seems so reasonable, does it not? And such a simple idea – too easy, right? Yes, we all know about the reservations the Giants brass has when it comes to Posey’s pitch calling. And I can see why they’re a bit hesitant considering the strength of this team is the starting pitching.

We saw Eli Whiteside provide some exceptional defensive catching skills this past weekend in Toronto (and really, for the past two seasons), blocking potential wild pitch after wild pitch – it was really an impressive display. And let’s be honest, Eli Whiteside isn’t in the major leagues because of his stick – the guy is a very solid defensive catcher.

In other news: This has happened before, it will happen again. As it turns out, the Giants front office is somewhat predictable in their predilections.

Blocking move

The last thing we need is a guy as old as Huff and Beltran closing. Well, no, that’s the second to last thing we need.

He’s still just good enough that we didn’t want him in AZ.

Love the typo though.

by Ian A on Aug 26, 2011 5:15 PM PDT reply actions

Help a roster management noob

Would it be possible to yo-yo starting pitchers back and forth to the DL (or optioned to AAA for those w/ options) on the day after they pitch.

The team could then utilize that roster spot for a position player or bullpen guy and then activate the original starting pitcher the day they start again 4 days later.

How come this isn’t done?

by posey yaknowsy on Aug 26, 2011 5:17 PM PDT reply actions

Because they must remain on the DL for 15 days

by hautecouture on Aug 26, 2011 5:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Because DL assignments are a minimum of 15 days; minor league options are a minimum of 10 days.

This is the reason there’s the rule where a player who’s optioned can’t come back for 10 days.

by QuakeFan on Aug 26, 2011 5:18 PM PDT up reply actions

DL is either 15 days or 60 days I think

Well I was close

I said earlier today that when the lineup was posted it would be one of the more entertaining moments at MCC this year.

Cabrera at leadoff? DeRosa at 1b instead of Huff? Tejada at third?

Bumgardner is going to need that mitt in left field to catch all the ground balls to the left side.

Surkamp ML options

Any issue with burning one of his minor league options late in the season?

by rpm164 on Aug 26, 2011 5:51 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

nope

he would have had to be put on the 40 man roster in the off season anyways to protect him from the rule 5 draft.

by you'vejustbeenCAINED on Aug 26, 2011 5:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, he gets 3, and there’s a new CBA coming up, so it’s not a big deal. The Giants also could just keep him in the majors until the end of the season, which would save the option.

yup, this is what i was gonna say

as long as they don’t send him back down this year, it doesn’t make any difference. and with rosters expanding, they shouldn’t be forced to

Hey Giants fans, a Ramon Hernandez trade could still happen!

Read this

There’s a Giants scout at the Reds game tonight. Apparently, pulling back from waivers can just mean pulling a guy back to work out a trade so he’s not lost for nothing.

We’ll take Heath Hembree, thank you :)

But I doubt Sabean would be foolish enough to trade Surkamp for Ramon……although Surkamp is a Cincinnati boy, so Reds might want him.

so, yay Surkamp and all

Isn’t it a bad sign that there are precisely 0 pitchers in Fresno that can come up to make a couple of starts without crapping the bed?

With Wheeler gone, and Surkamp (assume here he’s up for good and performs adequately): who’s left on mounds in the minors for the coming years? Like the years when/if they can’t re-sign Timmy or Cain?
