minor lines, 8/1/11
Monday highlights from the Giants' farm: Emmanuel Burriss and Brett Pill each homered while reaching base three times, and Justin Christian had three doubles among four hits.
AAA: Fresno defeated Reno 9-7Fresno: RF Justin Christian: 4 for 5, 3 2B, 3 SB
Fresno: 2B Emmanuel Burriss: 2 for 4, HR, BB, SO, 2 SB
Fresno: 1B Brett Pill: 2 for 2, HR, BB
Reno: CF Ryan Langerhans: 1 for 2, HR, 3 BB, CS
Fresno: SP Felix Romero: 4.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 K--2 WP
Fresno: RP Marc Kroon: 1.2 IP, 1 H
Christian's four hits were a third of the Grizzlies' dozen hits. With three doubles and a single, he raised his PCL OPS above 1.000 in 119 AB. He also has 18 SB as a Grizzly. Pill had his 22nd HR, and Burriss his 1st HR. The Diamondbacks' Langerhans had his seconds straight strong performance.
Making his fifth start in his last seven appearances, Romero pitched just four innings, throwing 79 pitches (45 strikes). Kroon, the fifth Grizzly pitcher, was the only Grizzly pitcher not to allow a run. He got his 18th save.
AA: Richmond had a scheuled off-day
(their first of three straight Monday off-days)
A+: San Jose defeated Inland Empire 2-1 (10 innings)
(after the game was scoreless through eight innings)
San Jose: CF Gary Brown: 1 for 5, SO
San Jose: C Alex Burg: 2 for 4, 2B, 2 SO, CS
San Jose: SP Craig Westcott: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K--1 WP
Burg was one of two Giants with two hits. Brown had an unremarkable line that snapped his four-game streak of two-hit games.
Westcott's 5.0 scoreless IP improved his ERA to 3.22. He allowed just 1 BB, while the three relievers who followed him had 9 BB in 5.0 IP but allowed just one run.
A-: Augusta defeated Savannah 4-3
Augusta: 2B Carlos Willoughby: 1 for 4, 3B, BB, SO, SB
Augusta: LF Rafael Rodriguez: 2 for 4
Augusta: SP Ryan Bradley: 5.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
Willoughby, who had his 5th triple and 31st SB, and Rodriguez were two of four GreenJackets to reach base twice.
Bradley made his fourth start. In terms of ERA, this was his best start with 1 ER in 5.0 IP. On the other hand, the 3 R was the most allowed in any of his starts.
ssA: Salem-Keizer had a scheduled off-day
(their second of three off-days in the NWL season)
R: Giants lost to Dodgers 4-3 (11 innings)
Scottsdale: CF Darren Ford: 0 for 1, 2 BB, SO
Scottsdale: SP Paul Davis: 4.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 4 K--1 WP
The rehabbing Ford was one of just two rookie Giants to reach base twice.
After allowing 7 ER in 6.0 IP over his previous two starts, Paul rebounded with this solid start, allowing just 1 ER in 4.0 IP. He has a 3.43 over his six starts.
DSL: Giants defeated Phillies 12-2
Dominican: C Fernando Pujadas: 2 for 5, HR, 2B
Dominican: SP Enmanuel De Jesus: 7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K
With his 2nd HR and 4th double, Pujadas (19.6 y.o.) had a 5-RBI game. De Jesus (17.6 y.o.) had another very solid start. He has allowed just 3 ER in over his past five starts, during which he has 41 K in 30.0 IP.

Against Bronson Arroyo on 8/31/08. 210 games, 643 PAs, one home run. And apparently it cleared the fence – no inside-the-park speed-aided homers for Manny.

And it didn’t make sense. Molina was pulled after the non-HR call. When that call was changed, the game should have reverted to that point. It’s like if I move my pawn three spaces forward to take your queen, and then somebody notices and tells me to change it back, so I move my pawn back two spaces to where it should be, but I don’t give you your queen back. And then you’re just cool with that.

I blurbed about Manny’s lack of power on my site a few weeks ago:
Manny Burriss is a man of several talents. First, he’s very fast. And second, he’s also very fast. One thing Burriss isn’t, is a power hitter. Since 1990, among position players with at least 500 plate appearances, Burris ranks second-to-last in extra-base hits with 15 in 630 PA’s.
What’s the rest of that light-hitting list look like?
Rk Player XBH PA From To Age G AB

2 Emmanuel Burriss 15 630 2008 2011 23-26 201 563

Three current or former giants
Burris, Buscher, and Angel Sanchez.
Adoptive father of Caleb Hous.... hous... housyourdaddy?
I’m guessing the Angel Sanchez was this one since he appears to be the only of the many Angel Sanchez’ who played in the majors. You’re probably thinking of Angel Chavez, who was in our system from 2000-2005, but never played in the majors.
We can, however, claim Wilson Delgado, who was in our system from 1996-1999 and appeared in the majors at some point in each of those years. Though he was originally signed by the Mariners, he came ot the Giants in the Solomon Torres/Sean Estes trade and appeared in the majors first with us. He would then go on to play for 5 more teams in the remaining 5 years of his major league career.

DeJesus’ numbers aren’t quite as scintillating as teammate Adalberto Mejia, but he’s still sporting an 11.68 k/9, a 2.62 FIP, and he’s six months younger than Mejia.
As a starter, DeJesus has 41 K and 8 BB in 30 IP, with a 1.47 FIP. His overall numbers are somewhat marred by a few sloppy appearances out of the bullpen.

Familiar story, though: they’re amassing some nice looking arms, but they’re really struggling to identify and sign any good hitters.
Since 2006 (which is as far back as BBRef lets me look at rosters), here’s the best that the DSL has delivered us in terms of position players:
Eliezer Zambrano
Francisco Peguero
Julio Izturis
Ehire Adrianza
Hector Sanchez
Carlos Willoughby
Sundrendy Windster
Jose de la Cruz
Ydwin Villegas
Leonardo Fuentes
Jesus Galindo
On the bright side, you’ve got three of our top 10 prospects on that list. But on the less bright side, after Peguero and Sanchez that’s a list of some of the weakest hitters in our system, most of whom haven’t been able to get out of low A ball despite several tries, and there’s a pretty noticeable lack of power or patience. And again, that’s the cream of the crop of the last 6 years. Toss in Rafrod (who never played in the DSL) and it seems a somewhat glum picture to me. I’d really like to see a little more high upside depth coming out of that facility.
Looking back, no wonder we were so excited about Angel.

This is his 6th season in the system. He’s already been eligible for the Rule 5 draft and will I believe be a minor league FA after this year (possibly after next year). And he’s yet to make it to full season ball. He played three years in the DSL, one in the AZL, and now this is his second season in the NWL. In his three years in the US he’s really never been a starting player, always sharing time behind somebody else in more or less a utility role.
His career minor league line is .262/.375/.304, but most of that OBP was the result of his years in the DSL when he once posted a 22% walk rate. His line in his two years in the NWL is .262/.313/.294.
MY DAD WAS WRONG!
MY BOY NEEDS TO THROW HARDER!
I really like the way he plays 2nd base, gets to a lot of balls that most wouldn’t even be close to. At the plate he tends to look completely lost. If he gets on base he has plenty of vroom.
Manny Burriss with better defense.

2006 too soon?
John Barr didn’t take over until the 2008 season, so it’s probably too soon to evaluate what effect the increased focus on positon players that he has brought with him has meant to the IFA/DSL portion of the system. I think that up until then the Giants were still concentrating heavily on pitchers and not paying much attention to position players that weren’t college guys.

I’m not really sure what affect Barr coming in had on the Dominican part of the system, but certainly it doesn’t help matters to start things off in 2008, since Peguero, Sanchez, and Adrianza were all in the system before that. The DSL position players the last four years have been pretty brutal collections.

PILL
Why bother to mention him in your nightly recaps. None of you baseball genuises think he can play at the major league level anyway. He is only hitting .322 with 22 HR’s and 92 RBI’s (I know you stat geeks don’t think RBI’s count but the Hall of Fame is littered with a shitpile of sluggers who are among the career leaders in this category). Meanwhile a young Brandon Belt, who should be getting regular AB’s somewhere, sits on the bench in SF, the big league club struggles to score 3 runs a game, is particularly poor against lefthanders and a left/right platoon (Huff/Pill) at 1B would seem to make sense. Pill is as good a first baseman is anyone in the organization and if you don’t believe me, ask Will Clark, and all you would have to do to get him there is drop one piece of deadwood from the 40 man. If he doesn’t cut it in SF, you can let him go at year end. What’s the downside to making this move??

He’s having a legitimately good year, but still … it’s basically the same line Schierholtz put up in the PCL, twice, while much younger than Pill is now, and with more defensive value. And we all know what a hard time Schierholtz had in adjusting to major-league pitching.

In the end, I hope he gets a shot somewhere, the same way I used to hope that Mike Cervanek would get a shot. Certainly, he could produce as well (or as poorly) as some people currently playing and even starting in the major leagues (and sadly, one of those people seems to be Aubrey Huff). The Pirates just traded for a 1B hitting .246/.302/.404 and considered it a major upgrade (and legimitately so, Overbay was hitting .227/.300/.349).
But that’s not the same thing as saying that I think he’d be a successful middle of the order starter in a pennant race.

In context Pill’s current MLE’s (in SF based and on the same number of AB’s) are .280, 17 HR and 72 RBIs. Not too bad, better than A. Huff and, again, what’s it going to cost you to find out if he can help?

You’re right. Belt’s had all of 16 AB in the last 10 games. That’s really doing a lot for his development.
Are you really saying we should promote Pill and play him ahead of Belt for ‘development’ reasons?
Sundrendy!
No, what I am saying is Belt is 22 years old and needs to be swinging the bat in game situations on a regular basis. He is your SF Giants first baseman of the future and his current role is doing nothing for his development. Re Pill, I’m merely trying to point out that maybe his hot hand could help the club out in a platoon set up with Huff. If it works, you might have something that would help the club win the pennant and quite possibly be beneficial in the post season when it is likely the Giants would have to face Hamels and Lee in a series against the Phillies. Would not have Belt and Pill on the 25 man roster at the same time. That would make no sense. If Pill can’t cut it, then you have your answer and you give him his walking papers at year end.
Belt playing time.
This. Why would anyone thing that Pill would get any significant playing time?

I think the point is that if Pill rots on the bench it doesn’t matter but if Belt is going to rot on the bench in SF then he’s better off playing everyday in Fresno.
WWRWD?
The OP is suggesting a Pill/Huff platoon. That is never happening with Bochy as manager. I do see the comment he posted discussing the issue of Belt’s development, and I tend to agree on that point, but the same comment is still talking about a Pill/Huff platoon.

Also, my blockquote combined with my comment is confusing. My point was more, if they’re not playing Belt, they’re not going to play Pill. I shouldn’t have written it that way.

yeah, his MLE has .110 OPS on Huff. OTOH, Belt’s MLE is a .820 which another .050 or so up. And pretty clearly, in the fantasy world in which Huff ever gets benched, the answer to your question of what it’s going to cost you to give Pill a chance is Belt getting a chance.
Also, of course, somebody would have to be cut from the 25 man.

They’re mostly hitting the cover off the ball, too. For all the attention Pill gets around here, it’s worth noting that his OPS at Fresno is lower than Manny Burriss’ (that bears repeating — Manny Burriss currently has a higher OPS in AAA this year than Brett Pill). And it’s much much lower than Justin Christian’s or Max Ramirez’, both of whom, along with Brandon Belt, are OPSing over 1.000 (granted in much SSS than Pill).

Justin Christian is absolutely raking, plus stealing bases like crazy. (Though, yes, SSS.)

He was the MVP of something recently and i can’t recall what it was. Either the Mexican League or one of the Dominican Winter Leagues. Something pretty serious.

He’s, what, 31? Looks like org filler to me, but you never know. Could be the next Andres Torres. ;-)

He’d be better than Tejada or Cabrera.

Christian has been very impressive. Not only is he raking and stealing bases, he makes some amazing defensive plays as well. Who cares if he’s an “ancient” 31 years old. The Giants are picking up guys older than that for the short term. If you have someone in AAA who can help the big club this year, move ’em up instead of buying or trading for guys. Give the players you have a shot. What kind of message are you sending them….great for the morale of the whole organization.
41st in the PCL in OPS, and OPS overrates him. And RBI’s, while important to the team he’s on, are very poor predictors. We care what Pill would do at the MLB level, and RBI’s aren’t a good tool to tell us that.

Not a bad idea
How do you explain to everyone in the universe why the number 1 prospect is sent to AAA for a RH player to leap him to platoon with Huff. It is all bad.

I thought the Pill comments would go down now Burriss is playing 2B in Fresno
Apparently not, now he hits enough to be an MLB 1B too!
Sundrendy!
Did you see Burriss hit a home run! Play him at first instead of Huff!

Burriss swing was looking better for a while in the bigs
from what I could see on TV in May and June. At least he was keeping his feet dug in and taking a full swing. Getting more line drives too. I was getting my hopes up for him in a Fontenot fill in role. But then his RHH batting average plummetted.
Marvin Barrios, come on I'll show you your bedroom. Don't stay on the phone too long to Panama, please.
It's worth noting he had half his walks batting 8th that year
Probably a lot of pitching around to get to the pitcher.

I honestly hope he gets a shot somewhere (not here, because if it’s not Huff it should be Belt), mostly so we can just stop fucking talking about him.

In a couple hours when this morning’s DSL scores are posted we can have another round of: “Is Adalberto Mejia one of our Top 10 prospects?” That should be fun.

How good would he have to be to make your top ten? The competition is not exactly fierce at the moment, but I have a hard time taking any players too seriously before they make it at least to the Northwest League.
I feel the same way. It’s a bad system which makes me think about it, but still if he were a top 10 player at this point, if he had some kind of off the charts talent, I think they’d have brought him to the states to at least pitch in the AZL this year. It will be interesting to see what they do with him next year. If they treat him like most of their DSL kids and do a year each at AZL, and NWL, getting him to the Sally at 20/21 then you definitely have to temper your enthusiasm. If they skip level with him next year, then that’s another matter entirely.

MY BOY NEEDS TO THROW HARDER!
It’s enlightening to browse through the DSL stat pages from years past. Every year there were a couple of pitchers with numbers as good as Mejia’s, but as far as I know, none of them have gone anywhere. But if you keep browsing down the list, you see names like Jhoulys Chacin and Michael Pineda with relatively unimpressive numbers.
Yeah, there’s almost no predictive nature to the DSL stats. And of course Chacin was a serious late bloomer. Pineda, too, to a lesser extent. I’d love to be able to see Pedro’s DSL stats but I’ve never found any body that has them going back that far.
I will say that Mejia’s k/bb rates are as eye popping as any I’ve seen down there.

they gave him $350k and he hasn’t disappointed so far. hopefully, he’ll be impressive enough next ST to earn a spot in Augusta.

I will say that I’m pretty sure they’ve never done that with any pitcher coming from the Dominican. They’ve all spent a season in the AZL, a season in the NWL, and then gone to the Sally. The only exception I can think of to that general rule was Liriano (who got a club record bonus for Dominican pitchers of around $900,000). Liriano skipped the DSL and spent his age 17 season split between the AZL and NWL before going on to the Sally at 18.
Just to name a couple interesting examples: Jorge Bucardo put up somewhat similar numbers to Mejia in his age 17 season in the DSL (fewer strikeouts but a pretty equivalent walk rate) and he of course spent a full year in the AZL, full year in the NWL and then on to the Sally.
The year before Jorge, the DSL team’s star pitcher was 17 year old Mario Rodriguez who posted a 1.74 ERA and K’d 54 batters in 55 IP. He actually returned to the DSL again the next year and didn’t make it to the AZL until he was 19 (pitching quite poorly at that). He spent the next two years in the NWL, and finally this year, at age 22 made it to the Sally where he’s a pretty undistinguished swing man.

Ooh way off. He’s hung with his first loss, sends his ERA skyrocketing above 1, and quadruplifies his bb total with 3 BB in 6 IP.

Playoffs?
I have had my head under a pillow for the past month or something. Or maybe all the travel has dulled my senses, but I was pretty shocked to see that pretty much every one of the Giants Affiliates has at least a reasonable chance of making the playoffs with the exception of the highest and lowest (Fresno and the DSL Giants). I doubt it means anything, but it is nice. I was particularly impressed to see how well Richmond has played and was shocked to see that the Volcanoes had shot out to the second half lead. I also thought Augusta was a wasteland of talent and even they are right there.
The Giants' affiliates tend to do well
We led the minor leagues in winning percentage a year or two ago and have done well since.

Salem Keizer and San Jose both have been league powers now for over a decade, going back to the 90s. San Jose’s not only going for a three peat this year, they’re looking for their 7th league championship in the last 13 years, and 5th in the last 7! (12th overall).
I can’t remember how many championships SK’s won or played in since they came into the league around 1997, but it’s been a bunch, too.

But SK finished the first half in last place 8 games out and IIRC, those around here who know seemed to think they were awful!
The relief pitching was terrible, seems to be turning the other way and some of the starters are getting shelled. Some very good hitters.

The pitching staff started out pretty terrible, and has really been spotty the whole season. But they do have some guys mashing the ball. It should be noted that a lot of there league championships in the lower levels are directly connected to the fact that they often field the oldest teams in the league. This year’s SK team has a pretty young starting rotation, but quite an old every day lineup.

I don’t know how they got good all of a sudden.
The SJ Giants have 2 open roster spots, but Joe Ritzo thinks they won’t fill them because of how well S-K and Augusta are doing and their possible playoff push. Not sure if that will affect SJ’s playoff hopes.

I was watching the Griz game on TV and that HR Pill hit was a fucking bomb. It bang the roof of some shack thing about 10 feet from the wall. Not a Pill Popper but it was fun to watch.

Pill Popper
(1) The Pillar of strength (okay, that nickname was admittedly a stretch) now leads the PCL in RBI’s with 92. His line thus far: .322, .354, .568
(2) Belt tore up the PCL but languishes on the bench for the big club
(3) But, Huff get’s the starts, and sports these putrid numbers .240/.294/.370
Belt has done well at every level because he has never been at any one of them long enough for the opposing pitchers to see him more than once or twice. They were figuring him out in Fresno and he was striking out a lot more. Always has walked a lot. Then the Giants move him up and what has he done when given the chance? Sometimes you need to pay your dues before management prematurely pulls the trigger and brings you up. Seems to be the Giants’ recurring theme.
Belt started in 12 of the first 13 games this season, then he got benched and hasn’t started more than two games in a row. Despite this inconsistent playing time, he has bit than Huff. He also a .273 BABIP in the majors. Huff’s BABIP is similarly low, but I suspect that is due to weak contact.
As far Belt in Fresno, I think his .324/.462/.549 line speaks for itself. He has only played 10 more games in AAA than AA, by the way.
Check out Catch-28.com, a blog about Buster Posey and the San Francisco Giants.
Which is my point. He, in my opinion, was fast-tracked through both AA and AAA and consequently, it didn’t help him in the long run. Now he’s sitting the bench or playing sporadically, along with other players they did the same thing to. A lot of those players…Burriss for example…are now back in AAA. Stupid.
You can’t seriously compare Belt with Burriss.
