Once/if Schierholtz starts to fade away and during one of Ross’s cold streaks (and certainly Beltran will need days off for his knee), Torres plays. But the prime three should be those three, for now anyway.

If Ross isnt’ healthy enough to run for himself, I don’t think we can expect him to play CF every day.

Wilson gives up 3-5 homers a year. This isn’t news. I don’t really care what his ERA is as long as he nails down saves. He had a bad outing today. When he pitches two scoreless innings the other day you don’t say anything.

You are avoiding the main argument

That pitch was up, so what? It was a terrible pitch to swing at. 9 times out of 10, he will make an out. Mayne 95 times out of 100. He got lucky.

If that pitch was down, he doesn’t swing at it. The count runs full. The pitch was DESIGNED TO MAKE HIM SWING AT IT. He did. He was bad. He got rewarded by the baseball God. You take that as evidence that Romo made a mistake.

Your argument from the very beginning was flawed and didn’t make sense.

I don’t think the pitch was where Romo wanted it at all.

I have nothing against Romo. I think he is a fine setup guy. I’m glad he is a Giant. I get annoyed he is treated like a sacred cow in here who can never do any wrong when pretty much everyone else on the team gets railed on for every little thing. It’s a stupid double standard that makes no sense.

Brian Wilson, 2009-2011 against players you named

Chase Utley, 1-2, BB
Ryan Howard, 0-1, BB
Brian McCann, 3-6 (2 doubles)
Andre Ethier 1-3 (HR), BB
Adrian Gonzalez 0-3, 3 BB

He has retired those players less than half the time he faced them, both as a group and individually.

Sergio Romo :
Utley 1-4
Howard (no regord)
McCann 1-2
Ethier 1-2
Adrian Gonzalez 0-1, BB

Romo is as effective or more effective against all of them since 2009.

We get on him when there is an argument to be made against him. In that game, there wasn’t one, but you keep looking for it. You believe there is a double standard, but that double standard does not exist.

His numbers back up what we know, which is he is the best reliever on this team against right handed hitters, and is effective against lefties as well.

There are times he’s going to fail. he fail when he walks people and gives up home runs. When that happens, we get on him too.

the months I was referring to were May and June. He gave up 12 walks in 27 innings. Not great, but okay. 21 hits in there too. So that’s like 33 base runners in 27 innings. I think that was a pretty good stretch for him.

perhaps, perhaps not. but the numbers are what they are, and pointing that out isn’t “bashing” him. Wilson has been very, very shaky this year. Them’s the facts.

by Croix de Candy Maldonado on Jul 8, 2011 10:25 PM PDT up reply actions

The point I keep making about Wilson which you seem to ignore is that sometimes a walk isn’t the end of the world. Wilson seems to be a big believer in the philosophy of not giving into a hitter on 2-0 or 3-1, and I agree with him and it generally works out for him.

Obviously we’d all like him to get ahead 0-2 on everybody, but when he doesn’t, it’s better to walk somebody or make them chase a bad one then to lay in a fastball down the pipe.

You know, it’s easy to say that, but he was effective in 09 and 10 because his walk rates were (while higher than you’d like) pretty low. Now his walk rate is near 5. He can be an awesome pitcher while walking 3 per 9. Not so much while walking 5.

I think April (which was basically his spring training) had too much to influence his stats. He had two terrible outings and like nine walks that month.

the one argument that I can make for the velocity is I’m not sure that fangraphs distinguishes from 4-seamers and 2-seamers and 2-seamers are gonna be slower. If he’s throwing those now when he never had that pitch before, it’s gonna affect his average.

His point was that Wilson has been much worse this year than last year. He’s throwing more 2 seam fastballs. It’s a cool pitch, but I can see how it would make him less effective on the whole because it seems like it would be tough to control.

the post I wrote wasn’t “oh let’s play the same 25-man team the entire 2011 season.” It was just, let’s play proper respect to the guys for opening day on home and road and to give them some kind of leash.

And yes, certain members of the team (Lincecum, Cain, Wilson, Torres, Huff) do deserve a lot longer leash than others.

I think 300 ABs is a pretty long leash and I can’t really argue against Huff sitting at this point. But I think people expecting Belt to be a savior are grasping at straws. He hasn’t done a thing to prove he can be the guy we want him to be. It’s just hoping at this point.

But JCT’s reaction to that post was basically “screw the 2010 team,” which didn’t sit right with me. He doesn’t believe in immunity or scholarship, not even with the stars of the team.

I’m not saying right or wrong. I’m just saying I disagree.

I’ve seen a lot of Giants minor league phenoms not hit a lick in the majors. There is no evidence he will. Just projections and hopes. My whole point when I wrote that post before the season was that they have hit on a lot of high picks lately with Cain, Lincecum, Posey, Bumgarner and that sooner or later the law of averages will even out and one of these minor league phenoms won’t be so great. People act like it’s fait accompli that Belt will be a great hitter.

If you don’t think that dragon thing was passive aggressive, I don’t know what to tell you. Could that guy have talked in a more patronizing, condescending tone?

If you didn’t want to respond to the email, fine. That is your right. But you obviously did whine about it to a few people and you kept on carrying on this stupid game even when I was done with it. That is your cross to bear.

At least I tried to settle it in private.

Really, the whole root of this is you can’t stand it that somebody disagrees with you about something concerning baseball.

Think how childish that sounds.

I don’t care who disagrees with me. I have opinions, and that’s all they are, opinions. Why can’t you just respect that?

Go back to that thread.

http://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2011/6/29/2251534/game-three-thread-two#70876766

You open the argument by saying Romo was to blame, then tell us off on how we treat Romo as infallable (we don’t, check last year).

This was my response.

and so has Romo. Really, you are talking like someone who just wants to thumb his nose at the sabermetrically inclined crowd after the statistically superior player took a loss.

Which really isn’t much of anything. I’m stating that you telling us to deal with it, sounds like someone that just wants to find anything to point out Romo failed.

You then proceed to tell me to be an adult, insinuating that I am being childish.

And that’s when I gave you the video. Yes, it was condescending, because I am responding to a condescending remark and after a tough lost like that, i don’t have the patience to be nice to people being condescending towards me.

And that’s how it all started. I just want to set the record straight. I didn’t walk in that thread guns blazing. You wanted to call me a child, then I’m going to respond.

what’s it gonna take to end this? Seriously, I’m tired of it.

Even if we disagree with the hows and whys, I never said Romo was bad. I said he was bad (or if you prefer, unlucky) that one game. I said he deserved blame for the pitching half of the game, as much as the batters deserved blame for the hitting part. I never laid the whole loss at his feet. I never said the dude wasn’t having a good year. It was just one game.

So what if I trust him more in the 9th inning or in a big situation? Really, so what? Don’t I have the right to think that?

You might want to start by not doing the exact thing you find unwelcoming.

Exact quote from your email.

I’m just a Giants fan with an opinion, same as you. The difference is I don’t pretend my opinions are gospel like some zealot.

So you are saying I think my opinions are gospel and I am a zealot. With that kind of attitude, I am not sure how this will end. Because you’re basically saying :

“hey, I’d like to have the last word. I’m gonna call you names. don’t fight back WHY ARE YOU CALLING ME NAMES BACK YOU ARE SUCH A CHILD.”

I’m not sure what the blow up today is. Scrolling back, it looks like I wanted to make a point that Romo continues to be the superior reliever this year based on his numbers, and WIlson is regressing because he is going to start giving up home runs, and the fact that he hasn’t been giving up home runs was what kept his numbers good and him racking up his saves. In short, he was getting by “doing his job getting saves” with quite a bit of luck, and that luck is catching up to him.

I wanted to save this game in my post log for record in case people start using that argument again and I can point to : "look, xFIP works for a reason, and regression is clearly at play here).

Out of nowhere came the “you’re rooting for our players to fail! You are a shitty fan”

Looks like you don’t want this to end. I’m giving you a chance to simply apologize for coming out of nowhere and calling me a shitty fan and actively rooting for players to fail.

You completely ignore that part and focus on the one part that doesn’t even have anything to do with the blow up and make it all about you again.

I’ll just leave it there. Anybody with access to this thread can come back later and look at what happened here. You want to end this? Stop calling me bullshit names and make up bogus arguments.

Don’t try to pretend to extend the olive branch and slap me on the face at the same time. If you want this to end, I’m giving you a chance. I’m telling you what it will take. Do what I just said above, apologize for saying that and it ends.

Kessel is a prison and mining asteroid located in the Maw, which is a vast collection of black holes. Navigation in the Maw is ridiculously dangerous and complicated, as there are only a few safe routes that people know of. This makes it a great place for smugglers because it’s so easy to hide in there from authorities.

Han was the first to make the run through the Maw to Kessel in such a short amount of distance because he had the balls take shortcuts and skirt the edges of black holes.

Rowand and Huff are owed 23 mil combined next year.

F. Sanchez is also extended next year

Wilson is a Top 5 Closer.

Dirty has too much value to just decline arbitration.

But sure. We can let Tejada, Ross, and Burrell go

OK...

Look, I’ll admit I’m channeling my inner-KNBR caller here a little bit. But let’s face it: this team is seriously flawed on the offensive side.

  • I might be willing to reconsider dumping Huff because maybe he’s due for a bounceback season next year.
  • Rowand needs to never, ever again wield and wag his bat against a right-handed pitcher while wearing a Giants uniform. Unfortunately, Bruce Bochy seems incapable of comprehending this basic truth. Brian Sabean has said he wouldn’t be influenced by long-term contracts. Yeah, I know…he was lying through his teeth, right? All I can say is if I had sway with this team, I’d make Rowand a strictly-platooning LHP-hitting outfielder. And if he wasn’t going to be cool with that, I’d deal him to Baltimore or Toronto, eating whatever contract I had to make the deal happen. We’ve suffered through this garbage with Rowand long enough. After this season is over, it’s time to end it.
  • Both Sanchezes have trade value. I’d see if we can package them in a deal or deals.
  • Wilson will never have more trade value than he has right now. By saying “get rid of” I am not saying DFA. I’m saying get some value for someone who I think has greater trade value to us going forward, than on-field value.

This is a .500 team, as it is now.

It will be most unlikely that they make the playoffs only 10 games above .500.

The Giants management is putting too much responsibility for wins on the pitchers. You can’t expect them to hold other teams to one or two runs every, or most every, night. You also have to have more than 1 or 2 batters hitting better than .230.

If they want to compete this season, they need to make a move for actual hitters. This is a .500 team, as it is.

Arizona may overtake them if they shoot for that.

Do you see where this is headed, this mentality?

Hoping that 86 wins gets the G’s in the playoffs- that’s a pretty sad place to be, and it’s not likely to succeed, either.

They’ve let the offense slack and put it all on the pitchers, but it’s too much. It’s not going to work.

That's what they look like to me, a .500 team.

They have 1 or 2 guys hitting above .230, and they expect to win games by their pitchers holding the opposing team to two runs or less most of the time.

A good portion of games, they’re not going to hold them to so few runs. Like tonight. They have to be able to score runs, too.

They’ll win some games. About half of them. But they’re not going to stay on the winning side unless they can, more often than not, score 4 runs.
