I don’t hate him. I love Andres Torres. Ross and Schierholtz have been more consistent this season. Once/if Schierholtz starts to fade away and during one of Ross’s cold streaks (and certainly Beltran will need days off for his knee), Torres plays. But the prime three should be those three, for now anyway.

There have been many stories of pitchers calling in the fielders and then proceeding to throw strikes past blinking-eyed batters. Waddell was supposed to have done that while at Rollins [College], and with Schreck [Ossee Schreckengost] sitting on the ground behind the plate.

You are avoiding the main argument
That pitch was up, so what? It was a terrible pitch to swing at. 9 times out of 10, he will make an out. Mayne 95 times out of 100. He got lucky.
If that pitch was down, he doesn’t swing at it. The count runs full. The pitch was DESIGNED TO MAKE HIM SWING AT IT. He did. He was bad. He got rewarded by the baseball God. You take that as evidence that Romo made a mistake.
Your argument from the very beginning was flawed and didn’t make sense.

I have nothing against Romo. I think he is a fine setup guy. I’m glad he is a Giant. I get annoyed he is treated like a sacred cow in here who can never do any wrong when pretty much everyone else on the team gets railed on for every little thing. It’s a stupid double standard that makes no sense.

Brian Wilson, 2009-2011 against players you named
Chase Utley, 1-2, BB
Ryan Howard, 0-1, BB
Brian McCann, 3-6 (2 doubles)
Andre Ethier 1-3 (HR), BB
Adrian Gonzalez 0-3, 3 BB
He has retired those players less than half the time he faced them, both as a group and individually.
Sergio Romo :
Utley 1-4
Howard (no regord)
McCann 1-2
Ethier 1-2
Adrian Gonzalez 0-1, BB
Romo is as effective or more effective against all of them since 2009.

We get on him when there is an argument to be made against him. In that game, there wasn’t one, but you keep looking for it. You believe there is a double standard, but that double standard does not exist.
His numbers back up what we know, which is he is the best reliever on this team against right handed hitters, and is effective against lefties as well.
There are times he’s going to fail. he fail when he walks people and gives up home runs. When that happens, we get on him too.

he was giving up a ton of walks those first two months
I feel like, more than anything else, the crazy high numbers of pitches he throws in each outing is making him a bit less effective. I mean, the guy regularly throws 30+ pitch innings.

I call him gerald. he’s a pristine white handkerchief, though? nediB eoJ Joe Biden ‽ Joe Biden.
the months I was referring to were May and June. He gave up 12 walks in 27 innings. Not great, but okay. 21 hits in there too. So that’s like 33 base runners in 27 innings. I think that was a pretty good stretch for him.

perhaps, perhaps not. but the numbers are what they are, and pointing that out isn’t “bashing” him. Wilson has been very, very shaky this year. Them’s the facts.
by Croix de Candy Maldonado on Jul 8, 2011 10:25 PM PDT up reply actions
The point I keep making about Wilson which you seem to ignore is that sometimes a walk isn’t the end of the world. Wilson seems to be a big believer in the philosophy of not giving into a hitter on 2-0 or 3-1, and I agree with him and it generally works out for him.
Obviously we’d all like him to get ahead 0-2 on everybody, but when he doesn’t, it’s better to walk somebody or make them chase a bad one then to lay in a fastball down the pipe.

You know, it’s easy to say that, but he was effective in 09 and 10 because his walk rates were (while higher than you’d like) pretty low. Now his walk rate is near 5. He can be an awesome pitcher while walking 3 per 9. Not so much while walking 5.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
I call him gerald. he’s a pristine white handkerchief, though? nediB eoJ Joe Biden ‽ Joe Biden.
I think April (which was basically his spring training) had too much to influence his stats. He had two terrible outings and like nine walks that month.
He had six walks each in May and June, and one walk for every two appearances isn’t bad if you ask me.

the one argument that I can make for the velocity is I’m not sure that fangraphs distinguishes from 4-seamers and 2-seamers and 2-seamers are gonna be slower. If he’s throwing those now when he never had that pitch before, it’s gonna affect his average.

I didn’t say it’s making him worse, I’d say it’s bringing down his average fastball velocity because fangraphs considers all fastballs to be the same pitch.

His point was that Wilson has been much worse this year than last year. He’s throwing more 2 seam fastballs. It’s a cool pitch, but I can see how it would make him less effective on the whole because it seems like it would be tough to control.

could be. Like I said, I think Wilson was damn good for two months and now he’s in a slump, the same as anyone else on the team who goes through slumps.
JCT was so offended I deigned to point out that Romo had a role in a loss (ONE LOSS) and that I have the gall to prefer Wilson to him that he’s pretty much made it his goal in life to point out every time Wilson doesn’t go 1-2-3 and strike out the side since then.

And I did email him, hoping that the two of us could reason like men, away from MCC, precisely for this reason. I didn’t want this to keep happening.

I was concerned with that too. They rode him hard last year and did what they had to do to win. And he did the job. Now people want to get rid of him because it’s what have you done for me lately.
Me and JCT have a major philosophical disagreement with that and I’m aware I’m in the minority here, maybe by a large amount. He’s not sentimental at all. They’re all just baseball cards to him.

the post I wrote wasn’t “oh let’s play the same 25-man team the entire 2011 season.” It was just, let’s play proper respect to the guys for opening day on home and road and to give them some kind of leash.
And yes, certain members of the team (Lincecum, Cain, Wilson, Torres, Huff) do deserve a lot longer leash than others.
I think 300 ABs is a pretty long leash and I can’t really argue against Huff sitting at this point. But I think people expecting Belt to be a savior are grasping at straws. He hasn’t done a thing to prove he can be the guy we want him to be. It’s just hoping at this point.
But JCT’s reaction to that post was basically “screw the 2010 team,” which didn’t sit right with me. He doesn’t believe in immunity or scholarship, not even with the stars of the team.
I’m not saying right or wrong. I’m just saying I disagree.

I’ve seen a lot of Giants minor league phenoms not hit a lick in the majors. There is no evidence he will. Just projections and hopes. My whole point when I wrote that post before the season was that they have hit on a lot of high picks lately with Cain, Lincecum, Posey, Bumgarner and that sooner or later the law of averages will even out and one of these minor league phenoms won’t be so great. People act like it’s fait accompli that Belt will be a great hitter.

Go back to that thread.

You open the argument by saying Romo was to blame, then tell us off on how we treat Romo as infallable (we don’t, check last year).
This was my response.
and so has Romo. Really, you are talking like someone who just wants to thumb his nose at the sabermetrically inclined crowd after the statistically superior player took a loss.
Which really isn’t much of anything. I’m stating that you telling us to deal with it, sounds like someone that just wants to find anything to point out Romo failed.
You then proceed to tell me to be an adult, insinuating that I am being childish.
And that’s when I gave you the video. Yes, it was condescending, because I am responding to a condescending remark and after a tough lost like that, i don’t have the patience to be nice to people being condescending towards me.
And that’s how it all started. I just want to set the record straight. I didn’t walk in that thread guns blazing. You wanted to call me a child, then I’m going to respond.

what’s it gonna take to end this? Seriously, I’m tired of it.
Even if we disagree with the hows and whys, I never said Romo was bad. I said he was bad (or if you prefer, unlucky) that one game. I said he deserved blame for the pitching half of the game, as much as the batters deserved blame for the hitting part. I never laid the whole loss at his feet. I never said the dude wasn’t having a good year. It was just one game.
So what if I trust him more in the 9th inning or in a big situation? Really, so what? Don’t I have the right to think that?

I’m not sure what the blow up today is. Scrolling back, it looks like I wanted to make a point that Romo continues to be the superior reliever this year based on his numbers, and WIlson is regressing because he is going to start giving up home runs, and the fact that he hasn’t been giving up home runs was what kept his numbers good and him racking up his saves. In short, he was getting by “doing his job getting saves” with quite a bit of luck, and that luck is catching up to him.
I wanted to save this game in my post log for record in case people start using that argument again and I can point to : "look, xFIP works for a reason, and regression is clearly at play here).
Out of nowhere came the “you’re rooting for our players to fail! You are a shitty fan”

Well it is what ever Lucas says it is...
I always rationalized it as a Kessel time race… see how far you can get in a Kessel. But the reality is probably Lucas didn’t know that a parsec is a unit of distance.
I think I read somewhere that his rationalization was that Han found a shorter route for the Kessel run. It’s still dumb because, if I remember right, it comes up during a conversation about it being the fastest ship in the galaxy.

It was a point about the fame of the ship, not it’s speed.
Han: You’ve never heard of the Millenium Falcon?
Kenobi: Should I have?
Han: It’s the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs!
Nate Schierholtz wasn't born, he was built.

to be fair
Fast ship? You’ve never heard of the Millennium Falcon?
so it’s about how it’s fast
Kessel is a prison and mining asteroid located in the Maw, which is a vast collection of black holes. Navigation in the Maw is ridiculously dangerous and complicated, as there are only a few safe routes that people know of. This makes it a great place for smugglers because it’s so easy to hide in there from authorities.
Han was the first to make the run through the Maw to Kessel in such a short amount of distance because he had the balls take shortcuts and skirt the edges of black holes.
Nate Schierholtz wasn't born, he was built.

OK...
Look, I’ll admit I’m channeling my inner-KNBR caller here a little bit. But let’s face it: this team is seriously flawed on the offensive side.
- I might be willing to reconsider dumping Huff because maybe he’s due for a bounceback season next year.
- Rowand needs to never, ever again wield and wag his bat against a right-handed pitcher while wearing a Giants uniform. Unfortunately, Bruce Bochy seems incapable of comprehending this basic truth. Brian Sabean has said he wouldn’t be influenced by long-term contracts. Yeah, I know…he was lying through his teeth, right? All I can say is if I had sway with this team, I’d make Rowand a strictly-platooning LHP-hitting outfielder. And if he wasn’t going to be cool with that, I’d deal him to Baltimore or Toronto, eating whatever contract I had to make the deal happen. We’ve suffered through this garbage with Rowand long enough. After this season is over, it’s time to end it.
- Both Sanchezes have trade value. I’d see if we can package them in a deal or deals.
- Wilson will never have more trade value than he has right now. By saying “get rid of” I am not saying DFA. I’m saying get some value for someone who I think has greater trade value to us going forward, than on-field value.

This is a .500 team, as it is now.
It will be most unlikely that they make the playoffs only 10 games above .500.
The Giants management is putting too much responsibility for wins on the pitchers. You can’t expect them to hold other teams to one or two runs every, or most every, night. You also have to have more than 1 or 2 batters hitting better than .230.
If they want to compete this season, they need to make a move for actual hitters. This is a .500 team, as it is.
No, this is a team 10 games above .500 as is
We’re all panicking right now, but look, this is a good team. Help (Fontenot, and hopefully Belt soon) is on the way, and the pitching is very good

The NL West is pretty bad
86-76 might get it done
Quote from my adopted son Mike Krukow: "We're the Giants. We're San Francisco. And we're World Series Champions!"
Arizona may overtake them if they shoot for that.
Do you see where this is headed, this mentality?
Hoping that 86 wins gets the G’s in the playoffs- that’s a pretty sad place to be, and it’s not likely to succeed, either.
They’ve let the offense slack and put it all on the pitchers, but it’s too much. It’s not going to work.
What makes you say that?
It has worked so far

It hasn't worked so far, I guess is what I'm saying. This is a .500 team
who, if they’re lucky, will hit 86 wins. I’m saying that’s not “working.”
Except that this team has the third best record in the NL
So it has worked, to some extent. I just don’t understand all the panic

So you're saying, based on nothing concrete, that this team will go .500 the rest of the way?

That's what they look like to me, a .500 team.
They have 1 or 2 guys hitting above .230, and they expect to win games by their pitchers holding the opposing team to two runs or less most of the time.
A good portion of games, they’re not going to hold them to so few runs. Like tonight. They have to be able to score runs, too.
They’ll win some games. About half of them. But they’re not going to stay on the winning side unless they can, more often than not, score 4 runs.
I think they have a pretty good chance of making it to
the post season. But can we go deep like last year? I don’t know about that.
Ugh, Torres hate makes me want to Aaron Rowand a wall

He is just in a slump right now.
Hopefully he gets back to last years form quickly.

I love Andres
But I am losing all faith that this will happen … if for no other reason that he appears to be as much a headcase as Durty. Jesus, man, you’re good – just go out there and play!

Having an attention disorder = headcase?

Thing that bothers me
Anglophone players are never called “headcases”.
"Lee pitches...Renteria hits a high drive, deep left-center field, David Murphy going back, he's on the warning track—it is...go-one!"
On the Giants, I should qualify. I don’t pay attention to the media in other cities.

except for maybe Wilson, j/k
Seriously, I get what you’re saying. I think Torres is a great person but I don’t think he’s a great ball player. He’s an average ball player at best. I want to be proven wrong about this more than anything. I don’t hate him at all. I hope he proves me wrong but I’m growing old waiting for him to do so.
But he WAS a great ballplayer in 2009 in limited ABs and he was great last year

Average players have good years.
I’m rooting for him and I want him to be good again. I hope he can come back better than ever but I just don’t see it happening. I’ll gladly eat my words if he does. He plays with all his heart, I’ll say that.
eh...same for some other players on the team
This is disingenuous of me I guess
Whoa
Let’s not automatically resort to that, okay?

I’d prefer that people didn’t refer to players who are struggling as “headcases”, so yeah.
Plus, everything we’ve heard makes it sound like he’s having issues with his ADD medication. Can’t really just rub dirt on that.

yes, that’s right. the problem is insensitivity and casual racism, not the well-documented fact the Andres, god love him, hasn’t been able to get out of his own head all season.

Big picture my short sighted McCoven. We will repeat this year. Why?
Wilson said so. He even said to write it down and because Jeff Passan said we won’t.
Aubrey Huff
The last 2 games that Huff has RBI’d were 7/2 15-3 Game at Detroit and the 6/28 the 13-7 game at Chicago. Nothing since. Last HR 6/2 (3). Last HR off someone other than St. Louis, 5/11. Last triple 6/7. 59 K’s vs. 26 BBs Hard to believe, but he is still the Giants RBI leader at 43.
My big fellows, my Giants!
If you want to be in first place, say Bye, Bye Baby!
Huff's been terrible
But please don’t cite ribeyes as evidence of anything
Quote from my adopted son Mike Krukow: "We're the Giants. We're San Francisco. And we're World Series Champions!"
Hell
Huff and Tejada lead the team in hitting!

Look guys
There’s no need to panic to this extent. This is not a .500 team; this is a team that is 50-40 and has the third best record in the NL. The pitching is and will continue to be phenomenal, and the offense will pick up somewhat
