(I originally posted this on Royals Review, and hoped some here would enjoy it, too)
In these days where media coverage is so pervasive that it essentially handcuffs athletes from being too outrageous, I lamented a bit over the lack of anyone we could all laugh about. While being ridiculous, I think sports were a bit more entertaining with characters like Rickey Henderson, Bo Jackson, and Deion Sanders speaking of themselves in the 3rd person.
So, bored and wistful, I decided to construct a fictional conversation between Bo Jackson and Rickey Henderson.
RH: Hey, how are you, Bo Jackson? Bo has the honor of meeting Rickey Henderson.
BJ: Bo is fine, thanks for asking, Rickey. And the honor is all Rickey's.
RH: Rickey is certain being in the same room as the all-time leader in stolen bases and walks, in addition to being the best leadoff hitter in the history of the game is the higher honor, if Rickey may say so his own self.
BJ: Bo knows Rickey's accomplishments, but has the honor of being a two-sport star and the greatest athlete in the history of sports. Rickey knows of Bo's exploits, does he not?
RH: Rickey is aware of Bo's accomplishments, but is unimpressed. Does Bo really think his career can even hold a dimly lit, end-of-the-wick candle to Rickey's?
BJ: Bo knows his success transcended sports culture and that he is an icon. Bo knows Rickey can't touch his commercial success.
RH: Rickey doesn't think Bo knows Rickey as much as Bo claims to know what Rickey did before Bo knew anything about Rickey and his self much less what Rickey knows or knew.
BJ: ...what?
RH: Exactly. Plus, Bo don't know how to talk right, anyway. Ricky is too quick for Bo.
Deion Sanders: Neither of you could high-step into the neon like Deion...Prime Time!
RH: Bo, is Deion talking to Rickey or Bo?
BJ: Bo isn't sure if Deion is talking to Bo or Rickey.
DS: *looking a little unsure of himself* I'll just excuse myself, now.
