Giants will release Pat Burrell unless they don't
Last night, there was a good, old-fashioned freakout. It's been too long. The story was that the Giants were planning to release Pat Burrell and demote Brandon Belt to make room for Carlos Beltran on the 40-man and 25-man rosters, respectively.
Belt is never going to play, so that wasn't the reason for the freakout. It's awful that he isn't going to get that chance, but he was never going to get at-bats. Let him get at-bats so he's ready for 2013, because if he can't play over an Aubrey Huff with a sub-.300 on-base percentage, he's never playing over Aubrey Huff. He probably will be the hitter sent down today.
So why the freakout over Burrell? He's a popular guy, sure, and I'm sure he's the biological father of some of the readers here, even if they don't really know that yet. But he's just a fifth outfielder -- a low-average, master of the three true outcomes. What he did last year will never be forgotten, but I'm okay with him on the bench. Break out the wOBA charts if you must, but he's an atrocious defender, enough to break a tie between him and Ross, Torres, or Schierholtz.
Here's my best explanation, then, for the freakout:
This site, myself included, is filled with people who probably take the Giants a little too seriously.
Haha, just kidding. That can't be it. Here's the real explanation:
Over the next two seasons, the Giants will pay Aaron Rowand and Pat Burrell combined $25 million. If they release Rowand, they pay $25 million dollars. If they release Burrell, they pay $25 million dollars. This is what a sunk cost is. The Giants know this. Dave Roberts got paid millions of dollars to announce post-game shows for the Red Sox in 2008.
The question, then, is who would help the Giants more as a fifth outfielder? The money's gone. Poof. It ain't coming back. By allocating more of the money to one of the two players, you don't get a better player. So look at both players and how they fit on the current roster. The Giants have:
Cody Ross*
Andres Torres*
Carlos Beltran*
Nate Schierholtz
The ones with asterisks are the ones who can play center. Well, that's not quite true. Nate Schierholtz can play center too, the Giants have just never tried him there. Ross and Torres are center fielders. Beltran isn't any more, but he could cover in a pinch. So for the Giants' fifth outfielder, what's more important?
- A player whose value is entirely dependent on playing center field
- A player whose value is entirely dependent on hitting home runs and taking the occasional walk
It's not a trick question. They're making a combined $25 million no matter who you release. They both have their very specific uses. But which skill set do the Giants need?
Burrell, no question, is a better fit. Rowand is done as a hitter -- almost nothing stabilizes quicker than strikeouts and walks, and over his past 633 plate appearances, he's struck out 136 times and walked 26 times, hitting .233 with 13 home runs. He can't hit. You can believe in his last 10 at-bats. I'll believe in his last 600.
But if the Giants get rid of Burrell, we're going to see a whole lot of Rowand late-inning pinch-hitting roles. He'd be the guy, the bat off the bench. Venters, Kimbrel, Madson, Bell, Adams ... Rowand. Whiteside bloops a single against Huston Street, and ... Rowand. He'd be the outfielder equivalent of carrying three catchers.
It wouldn't be a crippling move to keep Rowand over Burrell, and it wouldn't undo the improvements of the Beltran trade. It's just disappointing because the Giants wouldn't stay as good as they could have today, never mind the sentimental attachment to one of the reasons the Giants even made the playoffs in 2010.
Strip away the emotion and the subjectivity, and it's still pretty clear that Burrell makes for a better 25th man on the Giants than Rowand. I'm not saying Rowand needs to go (just hinting!) but if it's a choice between Burrell and Rowand, I don't see how that's a choice at all.

No, this is the reason for the freakout; at least for me. Belt is a better player than Huff right now. I don’t care what the team pays either of them. I want the best players on the field.
If the Giants insist on playing Huff over Belt and then try to tell us that “Belt isn’t ready” or “Huff is starting to heat up”, well shame on them. If people here actually believe those things, wel then shame on us.

Relatively, true. But their numbers aren’t all that different. You have Huff signed for another year, he got you there last year. You give him more time to find his stroke. You just have to. If you start playing Belt and he stinks it up like he did at the beginning of the season, then what? You have to ride the horses you’re given until you can’t.

True, but it isn’t going to happen and, given Huff’s contract has another year, I’m not sure that’s really what you want to do.
Huff is a career wRC+ 110 bat. Even over 2009-11, including his two bad years, he’s at 100. The betting money says he will produce at around 110 going forward. I am not sure we should expect that from Belt yet.

I agree that I would rather see Belt than Huff, but that there’s a considerable risk that Belt will not be appreciably better this year once there’s a league-wide book on how to pitch him. My assumption is that Bochy and co. figure that if Huff is effectively benched in favor of Belt, one will never get decent production from Huff, who will be pressing and disgruntled and resentful; therefore, one is betting a lot on Belt’s superiority, and also making Huff a virtually certain burden for two months + one season on the roster to a degree that he now isn’t. For Belt to exercise patience in regard to his situation vis-a-vis Huff is vastly different as to psychology from Huff’s exercising patience, anxiously and maybe sullenly, in regard to his situation vis-a-vis Belt.
I prefer this kind of analysis, which supposes rational choice, to grouching about Bochy’s stubborn preference for vets, and the like.

I think everyone is freaking out way too much
The fact is this: When it really matters (late Sept-Oct), I think we all know Bochy will make the right decision. We’ve freaked out about Renteria and many others in similar situations. Let’s not give up on Huff yet, because honestly it isn’t he alone who is losing games for us. On the flip side, this can help us down the road when it matters most. Bochy won’t just get rid of a solid bat on a poor-hitting team. Belt will have his time soon enough

Burrell has perceived value to opposing pitchers
I feel like the guys on Freakonomics when I’m talking about this, but Burrell has value because pitchers believe that he can hit a homerun, even when he’s tanking. They pitch differently, and I think that’s where PtB’s walks come from. I like Burrell as an off-the-bench bat. I don’t mind him in the regular lineup, maybe a straight platoon with Nate. Sadly, I don’t think we’re going to start seeing the Torres we saw last year, so I would probably opt for Ross in center. I have no idea who would lead off. Keppinger?
Rowand will start in CF and lead-off and you’ll like it.

Hall gone
The Giants reinstated Bill Hall from the 15-day DL and designated him for assignment, thus creating a 40-man space for Carlos Beltran.
from Baggs
I beat Baggs by 12 hours
This Burrell story seems fishy
1. You can’t release a major leaguer when he’s on the DL.
2. Burrell was put on the DL on July 14th or 15th, so he has at least 2 more days before he can be activated and released.
3. Why wouldn’t they DFA Bill Hall before Burrell? Hall is not worth much to the Giants with Keppinger on the team and Fontenot back off the DL. Hall has been eligible to come off the DL for the past 3 days.

I do think that Bochy plays the personalities a bit here
I think it’s tough for him to trust rookies, no doubt. But he’s also hedging his bet by leaving Belt on the 25-man roster and publicly carving out his role as late-inning replacement. He’ll steal starts from Huff here and there until Huff pulls a groin or Belt hits mor dingerz. The man (Bochy) understands clubhouse chemistry. I’d rather have Belt there than in Fresno – there’s nothing left for him to learn there.

by WhatsAMataHari on Jul 28, 2011 10:00 AM PDT up reply actions
The reason RP are not SP is one (maybe more) of three reasons:
1. They don’t have the stamina.
2. They don’t have a 3rd out pitch to get hitters out a 2nd or 3rd time in game.
3. They can get LHH out but not RHH, or vice versa.

Brandon Crawford: Your SF Giants 2012 Opening Day CURRENT starting SS!!
Yeah, I guess that's true
Burriss is the logical choice to go down but I’ll miss him. I’m very happy he got to stay with the team for their White House visit. I’m sure that meant a lot to him, especially.

I think Crawford is a better player than Burriss.
But I think Crawford should go to the minors until August 30.

Indians acquired OF Kosuke Fukudome and cash considerations from the Cubs OF Abner Abreu and RHP Carlton Smith.
It tough to complain about this deal from the Indians’ perspective, especially when they are reportedly responsible for just $775,000 of his remaining salary. Fukudome has struggled since his hot start, but still has a .273 batting average to go along with a .374 on-base percentage. He should do just fine in right field until Shin-Soo Choo is ready to return from surgery to repair a fractured right thumb.

NotNate in RF at home is kind of scary
"For science. You monster."
Get used to it
Allegedly Beltran made staying in RF a condition of accepting the trade. (I’m not sure how he can really enforce that, though. If he plays a few games out there and sucks I don’t see how they could just say, “Well, it was a condition of the trade. Nothing to be done.”)
Well are there microsplits for how well he’s played RF @ AT&T in the past?
Maybe he’s got it down. Maybe he’ll change his mind and just want to play RF on the road…
Only strawhats can help with this one
The sample size is too small for any kind of stats.
Anecdotally, I went to one of the Mets games at AT&T this season, and Beltran caught everything he was supposed to. /shrugs
Yeah
I guess if he’d put on a show like Vlad did in the WS last year, that would be immediately obvious. It definitely is not like that. I expect him to be OK, but probably not as good as Nate would be.
he seemed perfectly cromulent
in the gigantic sample size game I went to at Citi earlier this year. And in the handful of Mets games I’ve seen.

I do not like what this says about Sabean
just talked to Carlos. He very much wanted to be a Giant
It sounds like we were bidding against ourselves.
I don't
He is exactly the kind of negotiator whom a player can tell, ‘I will not waive my no-trade for anyone but team X,’ and then get team X to bid and rebid against itself until team X coughs up a top fifty prospect for a two-month rental. And Sabean is exactly the kind of negotiator who never bother to find out that the player will only go to him and that he has all the leverage.
Was Alderson there when they signed Beltran with that no arb clause?
Get well soon, Buster & Freddy.
No prospects for Beltran, please.
But Beltran alsn’t wasn’t demanding to be traded. The Mets were looking to gain some value from his departure. I mean, I get that your point is Sabean is a moron who should die, but, let’s not sit here and say that the Giants never used their leverage. They needed a hitter. Alderson was not in a position where he had to trade them a hitter.
by Every6thDay on Jul 28, 2011 10:04 AM PDT up reply actions
Alderson was in a position where he had to trade Beltran
His team is out. Beltran is expensive. His owners have cashflow issues. Everyone in the sport knew this, hence the pursuit by other teams. No, the critique of my point is that Beltran likely did not make some one-team diktat, and that other teams likely also were willing to overpay. But to argue Alderson was going to sit on Beltran without getting salary relief, prospects or both is pretty incoherent.
The point is coherent. You just disagree with it.
by Every6thDay on Jul 28, 2011 10:11 AM PDT up reply actions
Also, the Giants need Beltran more than they need Wheeler. And, yes, I’m aware of this only being a rental and the value of having a pitcher under control for x number of years… but they’re in WIN NOW mode and they have do everything they can to contend in the short-term and trust in and rely on their scouts and organization’s development system in the long-term.
by Every6thDay on Jul 28, 2011 10:18 AM PDT up reply actions
This is why I’m okay with the trade. I think it’s an overpay in terms of talent, but Beltran definitely helps now, and I think the Giants will be able to absorb losing Wheeler. I do miss him though. Lets get Minaya back in and trade Burriss for Wheeler next year.

This is always the thing about trading top prospects...
If you never do, then you’re implying that your organization is incapable of restocking the system with equal or greater talent. That seems like a bigger slap in the face than trading minor league talent to help the parent club. The equivalent to never spending your money but just stashing it under a mattress.
at least
they actually HAVE prospects other teams want now. I imagine Lance Niekro wasn’t drawing a ton of calls from other teams.

# The Beltran trade is the Mets’ “most meaningful July 2011 victory,” writes Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Sherman says it helped that the Giants “do almost no statistical analysis” and are not active in talking to many other teams. They simply go after the players their scouts like “with disregard to how it will be viewed by the rest of the sport.”

Probability of getting 6-8M from Beltran > probability of getting 1M out of Wheeler.

Here's the thing about Huff being given all this rope while Belt sits
There are plenty of guys who get off to rough starts in April and May and then turn things around in June, and they rake for the rest of the season. As any Pokemonz particpant knows, freaking out about poor performance by one of your players in May can come back to haunt you if you waive them prematurely.
But I honestly can’t think of any player who sucks it up for FOUR MONTHS and then turns it around the last two months of the season. I mean, I’m sure it’s happened a few times in history, but it’s gotta be really rare. Someone please go ahead and give me some good examples of players turning it around in August and September and I’ll be happy to say I’m wrong. But I don’t think I am.
It’s July 28, people. 2011 Aubrey Huff is what he is.

From Bags;
-Bill Hall was activated from the 15-day DL and designated for assignment to clear a 40-man roster space for Beltran. The Giants still must option a player to create a 25-man roster space today, but it won’t be Brandon Belt who goes down. Sabean deferred to Manager Bruce Bochy, but said Belt is likely to play a role similar to what Travis Ishikawa did for last year’s club.
My freakout stems from this:
Burrell is still one of the 5 best hitters on this team. And he doesn’t get to play (DL stint aside). He has put up numbers comparable or better to the rest of the team in 80-200 fewer PAs. I said this yesterday on Twitter:
scout_6
Pay Burrell is tied for 2nd on the team in HR and 3rd in OPS in 80 to 200 less PAs than the rest of the teams regulars. #oddmanout
(READ MY TWITTER, NERDZ)
If they released him when there are still people like Bill Hall and Aaron Rowand around, and for the salary they are paying him, It would be a colossally stupid move.

And you would still be wrong

Adopted Son:Dan Burkhart , Future Backup To Buster Posey.
That's nice
But here’s the thing: Huff is a hero, and a team leader, no matter what we as fans may think about those things and how foolish they sound, there’s a reason that the players mention these type of things ever day. The SF Giants have won one World Series. Aubrey Huff was the most important player in that one season. Everyone on the team likes Aubrey Huff. Brandon Belt is a rookie. It’s not going to be easy to go up to one of your most important players of a year ago and say, “hey, thanks for everything, but sit your ass on the bench.”
Do I think Belt is better than Huff right now? Yes. Is there actually a possibility that Huff is better than Belt? Definitely. But if I’m the manager, and I have to deal with these guys for a majority of every year, this is not a simple, objective decision.
That is cray-z.

is it really either/or? Must they pencil one player’s name in the 4 spot every game without fail? Must the guy with options left be sent down to the minors three times in a year, and sit on the bench 6 days per week when he’s not in the minors?
There are 8 positions and 6 games or more per week. Plenty of time. Get people on the field. Except for Rowand.

From MLBTR
The Beltran trade is the Mets’ “most meaningful July 2011 victory,” writes Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Sherman says it helped that the Giants “do almost no statistical analysis” and are not active in talking to many other teams. They simply go after the players their scouts like “with disregard to how it will be viewed by the rest of the sport.”
I believe it.

The Beltran/Wheeler trade had nothing to do with statistical analysis. It was all about present-value vs. future-value. Not to mention that almost all of Wheeler’s perceived value comes from his scouting report, not his statistical results.
One other thing, the lack of statistical analysis has not been an issue for the vast majority of trades that Sabes has made from the helm of the Giants – go back and check the record. Sabes’s main issue with the lack of valuing advanced staticstical metrics is when he signs free agents – or gives out salary extensions.

Burriss sent down 1st.

Really though, I look at Brown’s stats and I worry.
He’s only walking 7% of the time in A ball. Striking out roughly twice as often. The batting average is good, but sustained by a .350+ BABIP, which will come down as he faces better defenders.
Basically, his value is tied to being able to hit .290+ in the majors. And he’s only hitting .317 in A ball. I’m a little concerned.

Bottom of the 9th, bases loaded, Giants down by 3 to the Mets. Wheeler has thrown a gem so far; he just needs one more out.
Young Gary Brown strides to the plate. He pauses for moment before stepping into the box, surveying the situation.
Just as Wheeler begins his windup, Brown yells, “They kept me instead of you in 2011!!”.
Wheeler’s pitch doesn’t break like it’s supposed to and Brown smashes it, really cracks it, to the deepest recesses of that 3-fingered glove in LF.

Sabean on the effects of Beltran on Belt's playing time
Bruce (Bochy) has been a genius at juggling things. People are going to need breaks. The good thing about Brandon is he can pick up a start for (Aubrey) Huff and caddy for him defensively, much like Ishikawa. We have seen when we get as many left-handed bats as we can, we have a better chance against right-handed pitching.
Presented without comment, but with rage. Apologies if this has already been posted.

Wheeler comes from the Giants, and is very highly rated as a prospect…at least by the scouts. I’m here to judge him solely by the numbers.

That's really high
“In some capacity,” I suppose, but I’d say just based on track records of similar prospects he probably has a 30% or so chance of becoming a regular starter in the majors.
His strikeout rate is good, but hardly great; while he has struck out an impressive-looking 10 batters per 9 innings in San Jose, the league as a whole whiffs 8.33 times.

They might, realsitically losing Buster has only cost us 2 or 3 wins, maybe, Whiteside hasn’t been awful so the dropoff hasn’t been astronomical. The offense still would have been bad and they might have felt a need anyway to improve is.

I have to say, I don't agree
I think Rowand is a better player overall than Burrell, and at this point I am not sure Burrell is worth anything with his bat. I have seen that guy miss way too many hittable pitches in hitter’s counts this year. He is better at taking walks, yes? So then what? Pinch run for him after he pinch hits? It just seems like a waste of a roster spot to keep a guy who will get maybe 4 pinch hit walks, and a pinch hit hr. Rowand isn’t much more valuable, but he has proven to be of some value as a pinch hitter and his glove has more value off the bench than Burrell’s. Either way, they both suck…
