I must admit I'm a little confused
It does seem like (if I’m reading Hank’s tweet correctly) that the Giants did actually start out making this move and then realized they couldn’t do it (Pat, not Belt), perhaps by reading this board. Did CSN just report what the Giants wanted to do, or something? Or was that just completely bad reporting?

from M-W:
Sense 4 [i.e., “to take place”] appears to have developed in the late 18th century; it was well enough known to have been used by Abigail Adams in a letter to her husband in 1775 <there is nothing new transpired since I wrote you last — Abigail Adams>. Noah Webster recognized the new sense in his dictionary of 1828. Transpire was evidently a popular word with 19th century journalists; sense 4 turns up in such pretentiously worded statements as "The police drill will transpire under shelter to-day in consequence of the moist atmosphere prevailing." Around 1870 the sense began to be attacked as a misuse on the grounds of etymology, and modern critics echo the damnation of 1870. Sense 4 has been in existence for about two centuries; it is firmly established as standard; it occurs now primarily in serious prose, not the ostentatiously flamboyant prose typical of 19th century journalism.
/cue silly owlcroft rant against M-W
Well, they are dreadful.
But the essential point is that the fad use crowds out a word for which there is no good synonym. Just as the alteration of “connive at” to the sense “participate in” (with the wrong preposition usually attached as well) has deprived us of what “connive at” used to mean, so “transpire” for simple “happen” or “occur” has deprived us of what the word used to mean. The idea can still be expressed, but now requires a complicated phrase where a word once sufficed. (“Leak” just won’t do: no pipe ever “transpired”.)
Professional baseball analyst since 1980.
Wir sind gewohnt, daß die Menschen verhöhnen was sie nicht verstehn.—Goethe
I said that . . .
. . . because it works with either interpretation, the established or the faddy. It is impossible to tell a priori which sense was intended. No denigration was intended; sorry if it seemed so.

to me
a rental is easier to accept when the team already appeared to be on track for a serious run. if we were more of a middle of the pack team taking on a rental just for a shot at backing into the playoffs then i think the loss of a potentially good prospect would hurt more
and I think this means we take Atlanto to four games before losing
instead of three

It’s doubling down. The team’s good enough to make the playoffs but not good enough to win so Beltran increases the odds of that happening. If not, we get Posey and Freddy back next season and we go for it again.

Overpay or watch someone else do it
Beltran only 3-4 spot hitter available, and we needed one bad.
Very sad to see Wheeler and his upside go, but lets face it, Single A prospects don’t always always make the ML and live up to expectations. Also, at his best his is like a Jonathan Sanchez, high walk guy.

Our family tradition is
Birthday Ice Cream PIE.
1 carton Breyers vanilla
1 Oreo pie crust
1/2 cup home made hot fudge
6 reeses Peanut Butter Cups
Make the fudge. Poor it in the bottom of the pie crust, coating the bottom about 1/8 inch. put it in the freezer until fudge sets up.
In a mixing bowl scoop out the entire carton of ice cream. Mix in candy by stirring and cutting in candy. scoop mixed ice cream into fudge covered pie crust. Return to freezer until ice cream is again firm.

How do you think Pat and Brandon Belt are thinking?
One was supposed to have been released, the other sent down and now it turns out it’s not true but it sort of comes off like the Front Office thought about so if your Pat you’re thinking it’s going to happen any day now and Brandon’s got to be even more pissed

Talk of court news; and we’ll talk with them too,
Who loses and who wins; who’s in, who’s out;

In a wall’d prison, packs and sets of great ones
That ebb and flow by the moon.

The speed of information flow and the power of new media is scary
Way back more than a year ago, Cal announced that they were cutting baseball, gymnastics, lacrosse and field hockey. They also announced that they were reclassifying their unbelievably successful rugby program as a ‘club sport,’ rather than a ‘varsity sport.’
The Chronicle initially reported the story as if all of the sports were being cut, including rugby. It immediately released a firestorm of criticism towards the Cal administration for eliminating a program that has won 27 national championships and supported itself with donations. For nearly a year I’d run in to people who would bemoan the unconscionable decision to cut rugby when it wasn’t even cut. All because of one article that was relatively quickly corrected. But the damage had already been done.
Now, admittedly, things like Pat Burrell’s roster status or a college sport’s classification isn’t of spectacular importance. But I find these examples both illustrative of how information consumption has changed, for better or for worse. Interesting stuff.

Perhaps nobody was happier than Torres, a fellow switch hitter and Puerto Rican who credits Beltran with helping him change his style as a slap-and-dash hitter after watching him in the batting cage many years ago.
"I’m so happy. I adore and respect him," Torres said. "Because of him, I see the game in a different way. When he came to San Francisco, I told him, `thank you.’ I’m very, very, very happy he’s coming here."

I guess I'm stuck on Hamlet.
As much an emotional response as a considered one. Of his supposed “Big 4”, Macbeth just doesn’t work for me, nor does Othello. Lear I think actually greater than Hamlet, but there is a sort of aloofness about its power that I find distancing: it is the unmediated voice of God, while Hamlet is somehow mediated into forms that we mortals can more readily grasp.
So to speak.
(I don’t disdain Macbeth or Othello, but their protagonists reek too much of wretched weakness: they were born to fail. Lear is the real fool of his ambit, but not a weakling—just a fool. Hamlet is flawed, but comprehensibly so, and ultimately redeems himself.)

but their protagonists reek too much of wretched weakness: they were born to fail.
That’s the beauty of both tragedies: predestination. We cannot escape our fate. And sometimes, our fate leads to failure.

by GIANT stoner on Jul 28, 2011 12:22 AM PDT up reply actions
Well, at least the Greeks thought so.
I’m not so sure Shakespeare bought all that, as witness The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars / But in ourselves . . . . I have always felt that the essence of true tragedy is the alternative, the quantum fact that it didn’t have to go down like this, that it could have been avoided by a coin toss—a bit more wit, a bit more decency, a bit more trust, a bit more something that the protagonist was not actually incapable of, but chose (at some level) not to manifest. The tragedy lies in the sheer avoidability of the terrible fate, quite the opposite of the Greek view.
(I may be misrepresenting the Greek view, though, because the concept of hubris implies a failing that is not necessarily inborn; it’s been a lot of years since English I and II.)
Professional baseball analyst since 1980.
Wir sind gewohnt, daß die Menschen verhöhnen was sie nicht verstehn.—Goethe
Very insightful!
I see where you are coming from; the protagonist usually faces two roads in front of him / her, and the outcome has drastic results. I like that. Are you a fan of Greek theatre as well?
"A Giants game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings."
by GIANT stoner on Jul 28, 2011 12:36 AM PDT up reply actions
Such of it as remains, yes.
But it’s been many a decade since I last cracked the volume. My Lord, what a loss, so much, so very much, nevermore to be had. There are—what?—fewer than three dozen or so of the tragedies, I think (representing only three authors), and of the comedies I am unsure, but probably even fewer (and, I believe, only two authors).

Wow! Jeff Passan saying a good thing about the Giants.
Which is why Wheeler, who throws 95 mph and has struck out more than one hitter an inning in the minors, found himself expendable. Sometimes to survive a team needs to give up a player for whom it paid $3.3 million not quite two years ago and get a Carlos Beltran, who with one swing can give ample support to Lincecum or Cain or Madison Bumgarner(notes) or Ryan Vogelsong(notes).
That is how you go for it.
But until then, the Cardinals traded a nugget of gold for a couple pieces of silver, a chunk of bronze and a roll of tin foil.

No it doesn’t. The Padres payed Donavan Tate $6.6 million, but he isn’t worth half of Zack Wheeler or Gary Brown.

I remember people talking about that a lot, especially when they got Lee. The idea was that the offense was the players were getting older, they were more injury prone, and Rollins and a few others were getting close to leaving. The whole Four Aces thing was seen as their last attempt at getting one maybe two more chances at winning.

Expected surplus value based on WAR (or something like it). If you think Wheeler has a 50-50 chance of being an average starter while he’s under team control he’d be worth about $20M. I don’t see how Casilla could be worth that much, though.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek says he snapped his Achilles tendon while running after a burglar who had stolen cash, a bracelet and other items from his San Francisco hotel room.
The 71-year-old Trebek tells KGO-TV that he also injured his other leg while falling down during the chase early Wednesday. He was on crutches later Wednesday when he hosted the National Geographic World Championship at Google headquarters in Mountain View.
San Francisco police Lt. Troy Dangerfield says 56-year-old old Lucinda Moyers was arrested on suspicion of felony burglary and receiving stolen property. The cash and bracelet haven’t been found but other items were recovered. Dangerfield says officers found several items near the hotel ice machine.

I like to rank stuff
1. Vertigo
2. Notorious
3. Shadow of a Doubt
4. NxNW
5. Rear Window
6. Rebecca
7. The Birds
8. The 39 Steps
9. Strangers on a Train
10. Psycho
Fucking Hitchcock, man. those are all amazing movies and i refuse to rank them. And you forgot Rope.
Get well soon, Buster & Freddy.
No prospects for Beltran, please.
Rope is definitely second tier for me. Fun to watch as a stunt, but it doesn’t really work as more than that.
Hitch was all about the stunts. Rear Window is a stunt, Lifeboat is a stunt, The Birds, Trouble with Harry, even parts of Vertigo,
Get well soon, Buster & Freddy.
No prospects for Beltran, please.
I would argue that in Rear Window, for instance, the formal challenge he sets himself pays off emotionally and intellectually: through the various frames of the set and the constant back-and-forth gazing, one understands voyeurism, helplessness, detachment, lust, guilt, etc more deeply than if the movie were shot and constructed in a more normal way. If Rope does something similar, I missed it. One just sits there trying to spot the cuts.
The gimmick of Rope is perverse even by his standards, since he was such a genius of montage. I’ve been watching some of his silents lately — e.g., “The Ring” — and even in 1926, the man could cut like nobody’s business.
Yep
The formal challenges of Rear Window and Psycho are part of their greatness. I think Lifeboat works pretty well. I haven’t seen Rope in many years and am not really looking forward to seeing it again, but it’s pretty much a dull play with much artful blocking. The Trouble with Harry is just plain unwatchable, IMO.
by Duelling Brandos on Jul 28, 2011 9:28 AM PDT up reply actions
Haven’t seen Trouble with Harry since it was revived in … 1984, maybe? I’m curious to see it again, since no one seems to like it.
I remember those mid-80s re-releases—it was the first time I saw Vertigo, Man who Knew Too Much (Doris Day version), and Rope then. I saw some of Trouble with Harry on TCM in the last five years and just couldn’t keep watching it. I have seen the whole thing at some point. There are a few of the Hollywood films I’ve never seen—like Topaz, Under Capricorn, Stage Fright, and the Wrong Man. The latter is the one I’d most want to see. Thoughts on those?
by Duelling Brandos on Jul 28, 2011 9:37 AM PDT up reply actions
Never seen the first two. I really want to see Under Capricorn, but it is still unavailable on DVD as far as I know.
Stage Fright is the kind of tricksy movie he would have made charming in the 1930s, but by 1950 feels clunky and preposterous. But hey, Marlene Dietrich.
The Wrong Man didn’t grab me, but then I was expecting something much flashier and more traditionally Hitchcockian. I should take another look at it.
ok, thanks
We really oughta move over to the other thread. See ya there.

I love all the movies on your list very much
except “Shadow of a Doubt”. Don’t really understand all the love that one gets. My list would have “Psycho” and “Rebecca” in the 2 and 3 slots, otherwise would be pretty much the same.

Sad.
(September 16, 2008) On Saturday, September 13, 2008, at 3:30 a.m., the Frisco Police Department responded to an assault that had just occurred in the 7500 block of Stonebrook Parkway. The female victim stated that she had just been assaulted by a male subject that was inside of her residence. Officers responded to the location and located a male subject, later identified as Brandon Duane Puffer, age 32, on foot in the immediate area.
The officer’s initial investigation revealed that Puffer was the suspect. Puffer was arrested for Burglary of a Habitation with the intent to commit a felony (Sexual Assault). The arrest occurred without incident. The offense is a first degree felony and is punishable by up to 99 years incarceration and up to a $10,000 fine. The victim was not injured. The offense is still under investigation.
His history in baseball is quite amazing.
I’m wondering what the record is for number of releases in one career.

Keith Law posted his analysis of Beltran trade for insiders
I’ll just give you guys the whole thing and hope ESPN doesn’t read the post game threads.
In acquiring pitching prospect Zack Wheeler from the San Francisco Giants for Carlos Beltran, the New Mets made out like bandits. The Giants get a piece to help them substantially this year, but with the risk of an enormous long-term cost.
Zack Wheeler, who ranked No. 31 on my most recent prospect rankings, is an elite pitching prospect with a high ceiling. The right-hander will most likely be a solid No. 2 starter, but there is some chance he will be better than that because of the big fastball. He’ll touch 97 mph and sits 91-94 or better with an above-average curveball that has shown it can miss bats. He has a fringy changeup that’s a little too firm, and left-handed hitters are not impressed yet, as they’ve hit .292/.404/.487 against him this year. The fastball-breaking ball combo is top-notch, but between the changeup and a few other issues, Wheeler is high-risk as well as high-reward. His control is below-average, with three starts this year where he walked five or more batters, and he’ll have to show durability to match his frame, as he’s retired more than 18 batters just twice this year. You have to add an arm like that to your system any time you get the opportunity, but even as a fan of Wheeler’s I admit he’s no sure thing.
Carlos Beltran’s value to the Giants depends largely on who he replaces. Of course, what the Giants should do send Aubrey Huff out to pasture, but with their $12 million commitment to him next year (including his option buyout), that’s not likely. They should at least park him on the bench and play Brandon Belt every day at first and Carlos Beltran in left field, which is their best offensive and defensive alignment. In the best case scenario, if Beltran replaces Huff — who has actually been below replacement level this year — it’s worth two wins to them the rest of the way, perhaps more given Huff’s recent performance (.217/.295/.275 in July) and an obvious inability to play any position. If Beltran replaces Belt, the impact is limited, probably cut in half while also hampering Belt’s development. Any other alignment is also suboptimal.
Beltran’s contract includes a clause forbidding his team from offering him arbitration, meaning that the Giants can’t get any draft picks for him if and when he departs as a free agent. San Francisco gave up six years of control of Zack Wheeler for about 60 games of Carlos Beltran. If Wheeler sees the big leagues at all, the deal will probably end up a losing one for the Giants.

Pretty much
My biggest worry is that this trade doesnt change the ultimate outcome of the season and we lost something way more valuable.
I saw us losing to Atlanta in the NLDS. I dont know if Beltran changes that.
Quote from my adopted son Mike Krukow: "We're the Giants. We're San Francisco. And we're World Series Champions!"
this is roughly my view
The Giants will coast to the playoffs, then very likely lose the divisional series to Atlanta. Beltran makes that somewhat less likely, but he’s not Jose Reyes and the Giants will still feature an awful lineup. Wheeler was a top-fifty prospect by this spring. Giving him up really smarts.
Someone said it in the last thread
But we were bidding against the Braves for Beltran. And I would definitely like our chances less if our Beltran-free team faced a Beltran’d Atlanta in the NLDS. So that’s something.

I'm pretty certain Sabean caved
I don’t believe it has anything to do with some deficiency Sabean’s team saw in Wheeler.
By the way, I don’t think time will necessarily answer this question. If Wheeler struggles and never makes it then Sabean will be given credit for knowing something even though he might not have.
Could be a combination of both
I think if you take the comments from a few days ago about “our list of untouchables is different than public perception” and combine it with the trade that ended up happening, I don’t think it’s inconceivable that, while they like Wheeler, they weren’t quite as high on him as everyone else.
Gigante. Campeón. Pumpkin. Andrés Torres.
Dursh nerf darsh narf. Poop.
This is very true
They obviously didn’t value him as highly as was believed by most fans and also not as high as those rating prospects do.
At the same time, I think they obviously still believed Wheeler had a lot potential and didn’t want to part with him if they didn’t “have to”. I guess I’m more of a long term view sort of guy and I’m still not very high on the Giants chances of a repeat even with Beltran so it is unclear to me that this deal was “worth it”.
I say Sabean caved because I’m sure the Wheeler for Beltran deal was available for a long time and not something the Mets just conceded to.

DARN IT!
Hmmm…what do I do with my opinion about the trade now? The one that says although I love Beltran’s offense, his acquisition forces the outfield into an even deeper logjam and sends a gold-glove level RF to LF, and it cost the Giants a #1/#2 potential starting pitcher who they drafted in the first round and paid $3M+ in signing bonuses, one who will be under Mets control for the next 6 years. Oh, and the Giants only get Beltran for 60+ days and the post-season, but his presence will also offers Sabean the temptation to re-sign him to a 5 year overpriced contract after Scott Boras works his black magic on him. Perhaps it was necessary, but best – man, Ostler, you need to re-evaluate the Giants trade history. I always thought they made a nice deal to get Kevin Mitchell, so stick that in your trade machine Scott!
Eliminate that pesky Dominatrix in one easy step. Step 1: Tell her you're a Cubs fan!
For recent trades
the Jason Schmidt one was pretty sweet.
Basically, if Wheeler makes it to the majors, the Giants lose this trade. In terms of absolute value, that’s just a fact.
But 1) Maybe value isn’t absolute, and 2011 value is worth a lot more to the Giants than future value, and 2) There’s a non-zero, and even, I would argue, closer to 50% chance that Wheeler never makes it to the majors.
Gigante. Campeón. Pumpkin. Andrés Torres.
Dursh nerf darsh narf. Poop.
trades are valued ex-ante, not ex-post
What matters are three things: how ‘the market’ values Wheeler (could the Giants have picked up a good shortstop for him?), what the ex-ante expectation is for Wheeler (here his top-fifty rankings by BA and Law tell the tale) and what Beltran adds to the Giants (about another win through the end of the year).
Ex-ante, this one is a loser even if you think Wheeler’s market value was low, and I don’t.
see though the thing is
you (and we) have NO way of judging what the market for Wheeler is. Even speculating is grossly irresponsible. The ONLY way fans can realistically evaluate trades is ex-post, because we have absolutely no idea what the market is like, and value is not static.

PESSIMISTIC PETE
Wise words by wcw: "Nobody cares about your Pokemon."
"There’s a new celebrity inside the organization, and it’s a three-foot inanimate object," - Larry Baer, my adopted son.
As always. There are two sides to these things. I believe the Rasmus clan
TORONTO – "He’s listening to somebody, he doesn’t listen to the Cardinal coaches much and that’s why he gets in these funks. If he would stay with what they teach, he would have … but I actually feel concern for him, because he hears it from so many places, he’s got to be confused."
— Tony La Russa on centre fielder Colby Rasmus, to KSDK-TV.
Not so, says the man supposedly in Rasmus’ ear.
"This is the second time Tony has said this in the last three weeks, the statement that Colby is listening to me is 100% fiction," said Tony Rasmus, father of the Blue Jays’ new centre fielder, from Phenix City, Alabama.
Colby Rasmus, 24, the son was acquired in a busy day of dealing Wednesday.
Tony Rasmus, the father, coaches the Russell County High School Warriors, who won the 2005 national high school title going 38-1 with Colby hitting 24 home runs, breaking Bo Jackson’s Alabama state high school home run record.
Fathers are protective of their sons, it’s part of their job.
Tony Rasmus didn’t throw the first stone, but he was firing back.
In June of 2010 the father visited his son in St. Louis and worked on hitting: "We didn’t do anything serious. Colby told Tony about it. After last June that was the end of that," said Tony Rasmus, who said four weeks ago the Cards and Colby were involved in talks on a four-year deal.
"Evidently Tony (La Russa) has absolutely made that stuff up. He’s got it on the brain. If I was working with my son I’d tell people.
"Tony needed pitching and wanted to force the GM into making a trade, so he belittled Colby to the fans."
Besides adding right-handed starter Edwin Jackson, who the Jays had acquired from the White Sox earlier Wednesday, the Cards added relievers Marx Rzepczynski and Octavio Dotel from the Jays.
"Tony would like to have 25 pitchers," Tony Rasmus said, "like he thinks he has to put his stamp on every ball game. They had nothing else to trade. I think everyone is better off now."
The father spoke to his son Wednesday.
Said it’s the happiest he’s heard his son since double-A Springfield in 2007.
The father said his son "loved" the fans, the sea of red showing nightly at Busch Stadium and he "loved" the team, but he had a "hard time dealing with all the other stuff. This is a win-win."
Jeff Luhnow, the Cards’ vice-president of player procurement, made Rasmus his first pick in the 2005 draft, causing La Russa, according to Tony Rasmus, to "make cracks how Colby was Luhnow’s boy and that led to (former GM) Walt Jocketty leaving."

Rolen
Remember what a malcontent and complete a-hole Scott Rolen was and how LaRussa had to get rid of him to clear the clubhouse environment. I can’t believe I haven’t heard the same thing out of the Blue Jays and Reds since the Cards made a similar trade of Rolen to this Rasmus deal. It is never a good idea to get in bed with a celebrity manager at the expense of your team’s future, but that’s exactly what the Cardinals have done. This is going to end badly – Ramus is going to be a monster away from that environment. I wonder if the Giants could have snagged him instead of Beltran; I think LaRussa wanted more MLB-ready talent, though.

How come no one has ever mentioned that
Cain’s xFIP is higher than his FIP and his ERA…?
Can't spell "Colletti" without LOL.
What is the league average HR/FB%?
Quote from my adopted son Mike Krukow: "We're the Giants. We're San Francisco. And we're World Series Champions!"
I don't get this as much as I don't get BABIP
The problem I have with BABIP is exemplified by Huff’s 2011.
I’ve heard BABIP cited many times for supporting that a player is “just unlucky” because his BABIP is unusually low. How many Giants watching Huff’s “balls in play” this year (mostly to the second baseman) could claim with a straight face that Huff has been “unlucky”?
I don’t mind the BABIP stat per-se, but rather the way it is usually used to indicate some sort of “lucky” or “unlucky” period of time. Why couldn’t a low BABIP be indicative of a player who is just not hitting the ball all that well anymore? Why couldn’t a high BABIP be indicative of a player who has started to figure things out and making great contact with the ball?
BABIP alone has a lot of noise, as you indicated
But looking at BABIP with things like LD% and GB% can give you a better picture.
Gigante. Campeón. Pumpkin. Andrés Torres.
Dursh nerf darsh narf. Poop.
BABIP is actually better suited to evaluating pitchers
I think with hitter you need to look at other numbers to evaluate whether a guy has been unlucky.. Line drive %, Ground ball %, etc.
Quote from my adopted son Mike Krukow: "We're the Giants. We're San Francisco. And we're World Series Champions!"
Thanks
This makes a lot of sense to me, especially Line Drive percentage which I think would be a much better indicator of how a hitter is striking the ball.
Right
But if you see a guy with a similar LD% as he’s always had but worse results, then you can start to look at BABIP as perhaps being luck-influenced for that player.
Gigante. Campeón. Pumpkin. Andrés Torres.
Dursh nerf darsh narf. Poop.
Would you really need to look at BABIP
if the line drive percentage was the same? What else could it be?
No prob. Huff is a perfect example of seeing is suckiness is not really luck induced
In comparions to last season his walk rate is WAY down, his line drive rate is down, and his ground ball percentage is up.

Because if he’s not, then his value to the 2011 Giants is very, very low. And his value relative to his salary for the 2012 Giants aint that great either.
He’s more valuable to another team than this one, quite obviously. That’s exactly when you should trade a guy.

So I'm taking a sick day today
I need to gather myself. I am just going to recap my last 72 hours in a baseball-only sense.
Tuesday – Work all day excited about Lincecum and the Phillies series starting. Race home from work, stopping at the store to pick up some bbq supplies. Hear on the radio its 75 instead of 55. Meh. Get home and the cable is out. I call Comcast about the cable and flip my lid on them because this is an ongoing saga. Cable comes back on and its 4-1 phillies in the 2nd inning. Fuck you Zito. TV Off. Go to bed. (Unrelated – some MORAN was chainsawing outside my bedroom until 9:30 pm, thus adding to my furiousness. he doesnt have to stop because ‘quiet time’ in our condo complex is 10pm…)
Wednesday – OMG BELTRAN – Gary Brown – Zach/Zack Wheeler – Both – Neither – Ham Sandwich – Reyes? – Catcher? – Nnamdi – GAAAHHHH – Comcast cable is out again – So is propane in the BBQ – CAIN!!!!! – Burrell released/not released – Belt sent down/not sent down/might get sent down – Greatest freakout thread in history of this blog, in which I never even got scolded for bad grammar/capitalization/punctuation or for typing in ALL CAPS.
Thursday – Everything seems fine today however I still have no cable and at this point no energy to even watch a baseball game. Still awaiting roster move. Gonna play 10 hours of the show and see if I can get traded from the damn padres who have a death grip on my career.
I don’t care if anyone reads this. I just needed to take a step back and figure out what really just happened and how I’m supposed to feel about it. Carry on.

weird to see Beltran on the Cot's Contracts page for SF
- award bonuses: $0.1M each for Silver Slugger, Aaron Award, Gold Glove, All Star, most All Star votes in league, BA/TSN/AP MVP or Player of Year; $0.15M each for LDS MVP, LCS MVP; $0.2M each for 2nd-5th in MVP vote; $0.25M for WS MVP; $0.5M for first MVP; $1M for second MVP; $1.5M for third and subsequent MVPs
- perks: hotel suite on road, 15-person suite at home games, player to purchase post-season tickets, club agreed to lease ocular enhancer machine (device that throws numbered & multi-colored tennis balls at 150 mph)
- Beltran to donate $0.3M annually to charity (half to club charity, half to charity of player’s choice)
I wonder who they kicked out of a luxury box for him.

The Giants don’t usually play the Reds well. We know this cuz’ the Mr.‘s parents are in Ohio and we will always say something like "check out this player, he’s great…" and that player will immediately hit into a quadruple play or give up a 10 run homer.

this is true, but I think Martiy is probably basing this on the reports that said the Giants would be willing to take on all of Beltran’s contract if they could give up a lesser prospect. If those reports are true they could still stretch the payroll at least another 4 mil for the rest of the year if they really wanted to.

Wheeler had a 3.3m signing bonus plus costs of development. The Giants got 4m. Plus, they are still on the hook for Beltran’s salary (6M).

It’s “saved” because Sabean was prepared to eat all of Beltran contract by giving up lesser prospect. That means they had budget approved to do so. By not eating 4M, theoretically there is 4M still approved by ownership group to go after upgrades elsewhere.
