Beltran, Rasmus or Upton
If you had to pick one, which would you choose - Beltran, Rasmus or Upton?
Each player has its ups and downs and we have all see the huge write ups here on McCovey Chronicles. Beltran is a rental but a beast. Rasmus is a head case but a young 5 tool guy. Upton has not proven jack squat but is a crazy "athlete" that might improve with a change of scenery.
So I ask all you folks, a very simple question, with just one word answer:
Choose 1 - Beltran, Rasmus or Upton?
**** I will update this post as I get responses via twitter. So far:
hankschulman Henry Schulman Rasmus. RT @hankschulman pick 1 - beltran, rasmus or upton.

Rasmus is probably the best of the 3 but I imagine he’ll have the highest asking price.
Beltran probably can’t play CF anymore so he’s the most limited, but he’ll be the cheapest because LOL METS.
Upton is in the middle; that said, he’s really an upside bet. So my answer is Rasmus, as long as we can keep Brown.

Pence!
little bit older than Rasmus/Upton but has more pop & gets on base & is a fan favorite in Houston.
He by far would help Giants this year & the next 5 the most without causing team chemistry issues or breaking the bank

I’ll take Rasmus and hope that his production continues to increase over the next year and a half or so. Then, after next season (assuming Gary Brown is ready), package Rasmus to fill a need.
Rasmus would also be a decent corner OF if Neal, Pegs and Nate can’t cover it.

My buddy in New York says that Mets fans are really excited about the idea of acquiring Belt or Gary Brown. Someone’s gonna be disappointed…
"Can Manchester United score? They always score... Peter Schmeichel is forward... Beckham, in towards Schmeichel- it's come for Dwight Yorke. Cleared... Giggs with a shot- SHERINGHAM!"
Beltran
He will certainly be the cheapest, and the most likely to help us this year. That meets my qualifications. Cause:
1. You have no idea what happens next year let alone next week and,
2. Therefore, you do not trade strong future chips if you don’t have to.
And it would cost at least one of the Wheeler, Brown, Belt group to bring in Upton, and probably two of the three to get Rasmus.
My two favorite teams are the Giants, and whomever is playing the Dodgers!

Beltran...for now
I think that the Giants will be able to pull off some type of deal that brings them Beltran without any major prospects. I’m with Baggs on this one, Peguero and Runzler or something along those lines. He helps the most right now and this team is built both for now and the future. But they can use the bat now.
Then…
This offseason, revisit the idea of Rasmus or Upton (Preferrably Rasmus). For one of those guys with team control, I wouldn’t be opposed to talking about Wheeler or Hembree or the like. They are long term upgrades, but don’t offer much in terms of this season unless one of them goes completely nuts for 80 games or so.
I have to say Beltran. He’s certainly the best RIGHT NOW, and with the team in 1st, just go for it. It’s not as if he’s going to cost Belt or Wheeler either.

Depends =)
Rasmus is awesome, but shows he can’t handle platooning. He is so up and down because he is yo-yo’d, hmm kinda like some players WE know.
Short-term and for not a lot, Beltran.
Long-term, sell the farm, Rasmus, if we had another manager.
Long-term for not a lot, Upton.

Beltran.
And it’s not that close IMO.
Mets have no leverage and it’s gonna be a pair of meh-ish prospects to get him.
Relief! I Thank you for your Lefferts.

this
if i was just picking the one i’d like to have most it’d be rasmus, but considering what it would take to get each of them I’ll just take one Beltran and be on my way.
Never in doubt.
by TimLincecumIsGod on Jul 26, 2011 5:06 PM PDT up reply actions
what do you mean “the Mets have no leverage”. seems they have 5 different teams interested in Beltran. asking price wouldn’t be as much as the other two but they certainly have plenty of bidders.
by repeat_in_2011 on Jul 26, 2011 10:39 PM PDT up reply actions
but if any of them were actually bidding anything they probably would have moved by now.

well if we gave up Brown or Wheeler and there were no other serious bidders, then it would appear Sabean outbid himself. :(

if this “report” is to be believed (and I certainly have my doubts)
Looking to bolster their pitching staff, the Cardinals would be willing to part with talented center fielder Colby Rasmus for Edwin Jackson or Matt Thornton, and a prospect, according to the report.
then I would really like to see the Giants pursue Rasums. I would be thrilled with a Jonathan Sanchez plus B prospect (by which I mean anybody currently in the minor leagues other than Wheeler, Brown, or Hembree) or Sanchez plus reliever (the Cards could really use some help there) trade, which would be at least as good as that White Sox package.

He's not available
The Fish are moving into a new stadium next year and will have a corresponding sizable increase in payroll. With all the young talent on their team (Morrison, Stanton, A. Sanchez, Johnson, Nolasco, G. Sanchez, Coghlan, Matt Dominguez) they’re never going to trade one of the best shortstops who’s locked up to a good contract for the next several seasons especially when finding a good shortstop is nearly impossible. I can’t imagine they won’t try to contend starting next year, and the Phillies might be old enough for them to do it.

They keep saying they're going to increase payroll to around $70M
Obviously nothing is done until it’s done, but I think with baseball already reprimanding them for not spending enough and their reaction to that, if they open a new stadium and don’t spend more MLB will not be happy (and the city of Miami, which is probably paying for a lot of that stadium, won’t be particularly pleased either).

That stadium already cost the governor his job. So I’m not sure how much more unhappy Floridians could be. As for MLB, I don’t guess they could really say anything to Loria, after the whole Montreal mess (it really seems to be the case that Loria intentionally destroyed that market on Bud’s orders with a promised reward of another franchise when he’d done the job). It was the union that slapped them last winter, not MLB. MLB instead fined the owner of the Red Sox for saying in an interview that teams like the Marlins and Royals and couple others were pocketing revenue sharing funds and turning the largest profits in the game (which Forbes later confirmed).

This is the one time ever that you’re better off with a rental. Thanks to Aubrey being signed through next year, Belt is going to have to play the outfield next year, and Nate is fine for right. Brown will eventually replace Torres in CF. You just need Cody or a Cody type backup next year and you’re fine. That’s not even mentioning that Beltran is the best player of the three by far right now. You’re trading at the deadline for an immediate upgrade, not for future potential.

Who’s worth the most in a trade? Rasmus
If the Giants could only get one of the three, who would I want? Rasmus.

Latest on Beltran
Supposedly between Giants and Rangers. Supposedly the Giants are offering better quality while the Rangers are offering more prospects. Most people think Boras is steering him to SF because they have the most money to re-sign him.

Is J Sanch involved in the talks for Beltran. Please god no. If Dirty is in the equation, we better be going after Rasmus instead. Sanchez for a rental player? Have the Giants cooled that much on our million dollar arm, 10 cent brain lefty?

With Boras as his agent, I wouldn’t even want the Giants to resign him. Whatever contract he gets, I kinda doubt he’ll be worth. And with that clause in his contract where we can’t offer him arbitration and therefore would get no draft pick compensation when he walks, the Giants better be giving up precious little to get him for a few months.

Not sure where else I could riot about this
but I can’t believe the Cardinals just gave away Rasmus for Edwin Jackson + relievers (though Rzepczynski might become a 4/5 starter).

sounds
like he is. I don’t know if this is a good trade or not still The giants won off either home grown talent or people who were thought of to be washed up but gave surprising performances. When we get a superstar things do not end up well. Gary Brown is a good prospect.
