Kelby Tomlinson, the Giants 12th round pick out of Texas Tech, has signed a deal with the club. He played his first pro game tonight down in Arizona for the Giants AZL Rookie League team. He went 2 for 4 with 2 singles and an RBI, but he struck out twice and committed 2 errors that directly led to 4 unearned runs. He's known for his outstanding D so let's chalk those 2 errors up to opening game jitters.
That makes it an even 20 of the 51 draftees that are known to have signed. I'm sure that the Giants have deals in place with at east 8 other draftees and are just waiting for approval from Bud Selig & Co. All-in-all it's been a very successful 17 days since the end of the draft. Here's all that I have on Tomlinson.
12.387 - Kelby Tomlinson, SS, RHH, Texas Tech Univ. (6'2", 180) (DOB=6/16/90)
Tomlinson is a well above-average defensive SS who was also competent at the plate his one and only season for TTU. Tomlinson ended the 2011 season on a 24-game errorless streak and recorded only one error in his final 33 games for TTU. He has no power to speak of at the plate but the Giants are betting that he can hit for a high enough average and OBP to let his glove carry him to the majors. He was able to put up a very good walk rate despite his lack of power, but he needs to cut down on his Ks. It will be tough for him to keep up his hgh BB-rate going forward - pro pitchers are unlikely to pitch carefully to a hitter with such little power. He certainly has the build and athletic actions to add some power to his game so let's hope the Giants can coach him up and put him on the fast track.
