Highlights from the farm tonight: Eric Surkamp has another shutout start with lots of strikeouts; Chris Dominguez hit his first Double-A home run as his hot streak continues; Ben Thomas hit a home run and had three XBH in a four-hit effort for the AZL Giants in a 10th inning thriller.

Dan Otero 2.0 1 0 0 0 2 0 0.00

Game Notes - Salt Lake kicked things off with a two-run first inning to take the early lead, and then scoring two more in the top of the fourth to make it 4-0 going into the bottom half to set up a Fresno comeback. Edgar Gonzalez singled, and scored on a Conor Gillaspie triple to get Fresno on the board, and Gillaspie came in on a Brett Pill single. In the fifth, Gonzalez had an RBI groundout followed by a Gillaspie RBI single to tie the game at four. However, the Bees exploded in the sixth for three runs off of reliever Geno Espineli, and that put them up for good. A Max Ramirez home run in the bottom of the sixth finished off Fresno's scoring.

Team Notes - Hector Sanchez started the game at catcher, but was removed after a play in the third where he was forced out at second on a groundout. No details about why he was removed were available...Gillaspie's last triple was only on June 16th. He now has as many triples (4) as home runs...Graham's two stolen bases give him five in the last nine games, and a system-leading 37 on the season...Ramirez hit his first home run with Fresno. He had hit two with Oklahoma City and one with Iowa earlier this season...Dan Runzler continues to struggle as a starter, having given up 12 runs (eight earned) over his last three starts. He hasn't gone more than four innings in any of them...Geno Espineli had another big ERA inflation, allowing three runs in a single outing for the second time in five appearances. The other time was also against Salt Lake...Dan Otero continues to excel in Fresno, now having collected six strikeouts and one walk while giving up three hits in five innings.

Eric Surkamp 6.0 3 0 0 2 8 0 1.74 W (5-3), 1 WP
David Quinowski 1.0 1 0 0 0 1 0 1.93

Game Notes - Eric Surkamp turned in another dominating performance, as the Richmond offense showed some life at home. Surkamp's six shutout innings and eight strikeouts keep him as the top performing pitching prospect in the system. Meanwhile, Richmond's offense got underway with a run on the third off of Roger Kieschnick's RBI single. In the fourth, Justin Christian's RBI double, and a Johnny Monell RBI single made the score 3-0. Richmond doubled it in the sixth, as Juan Perez hit a two-run triple, and Monell sacrificed him home. And in the seventh, Chris Dominguez iced the scoring off with his first home run in Double-A, a two-run shot to make it 8-0.

Team Notes - It's a small sample size, but Dominguez is starting to performing in his sink-or-swim promotion. He's batting 7-for-15 with four doubles, a triple, and a home run over his last four games (after going 1-for-14 in his first four), and has the highest batting average on the team at the moment...Christian has two doubles in the last three days...Perez and Francisco Peguero swapped right and center field from Peguero's debut on Thursday. Peguero had played center in his first game, but was in right on Friday...Roger Kieschnick is batting 6-for-17 (.353) over his last four games...This was Surkamp's first scoreless start since May 7th, though he's had two games where he allowed no earned runs, and four games in which he allowed just one run since then...David Quinowski picked up a scoreless inning in relief. He has 26 strikeouts and five walks in 32 2/3 innings this season.

Jose Valdez 1.0 3 3 3 0 1 1 7.45 1 WP

Game Notes - It was an unusually poor game for San Jose. Stockton took an early 2-0 lead against starter Andy Reichard, but San Jose tied it in the fifth. Alex Burg took a two-out walk to start the rally, and Wendell Fairley singled him home. James Simmons then tied it with an RBI single of his own. However, Stockton scored three more runs in both the sixth and seventh to take a commanding lead. An eighth inning rally fell short for San Jose, as Cavan and Flores each doubled in a three-run inning.

Team Notes - Cavan's double was his first extra-base hit in his last ten games. He is slugging just .440 this season...Jose Flores picked up just his second hit in six games at San Jose...Fairley has three consecutive two-hit games...Gary Brown's recent struggles continue, as he's batting .125 over his last ten games (not including the All-Star Game)...Reichard has given up ten earned runs in his last three starts, going just 14 1/3 innings...Jose Valdez has given up three earned runs in each of his last two appearances.

Game Notes - Game 1 was ugly, as Augusta was held to just one hit, and that had nothing to do with their run. That run came in the fourth, as Carlos Willoughby walked, went to second on a bunt, third on a wild pitch, and scored on an Adam Duvall sacrifice fly to put Augusta on top, briefly. Savannah tied it in the bottom of the fourth with a double and a pair of groundouts, and then took the lead with a two-out RBI single in the fifth.

Stephen Harrold 1.0 0 0 0 0 1 0 1.89 S (11)

Game Notes - Augusta faired much better in the nightcap. They took the lead first as Adam Duvall hit an RBI single in the top of the third, but Savannah took the lead for themselves with a two-run fourth. In the fifth, Josh Mazzola got a one-out, three-run home run to put Augusta up for good.

Team Notes - Weeks' hit in the first game keeps the formerly retired infielder's batting average at .351. He did not play the second game...Ehire Adrianza is batting .343 over his last ten games with four doubles, a triple and a home run...Duvall's two RBI today gives him 55 on the season, leading the GreenJackets...Mazzola's home run was just his first of the month of June...Sanford has a 2.61 ERA in his last ten starts...Rosin got the double-header start, his first since May 27th, but still went just 3 1/3 innings while giving up a pair of runs. He has 28 strikeouts and 11 walks over his last ten appearances...Despite being a fulltime reliever, Dunnington's 51 strikeouts leads the GreenJackets...Bochy continues to dominate. In the last six games, he's allowed four hits and one walk, while striking out 11 in six innings.

Brennan Flick 2.0 3 3 3 2 1 0 6.78 L (0-2)

Game Notes - The Volcanoes gave up some late runs to take this loss. Eugene went up 3-0 after a three run fourth, but S-K had a comeback in them. A Brice Cutspec RBI double in the bottom of the fourth made it 3-1, and an RBI single by Shawn Payne, followed by a Mike Murray sacrifice fly, tied the game up. It stayed tied until the eighth, when Eugene got a two-out rally started with consecutive walks and then continued with consecutive doubles to give the Ems three more runs.

Team Notes - Jesus Galindo's double was his first extra-base hit of the season, in seven games...Shawn Payne had a huge day for steals, collecting three. He'd only attempted one steal before, on Wednesday, and was caught...Joe Panik suffered his first hitless game of the season, but also walked for the first time in four games...Reinier Roibal's second start fell far short of the ten strikeout debut he had on the season...Flick has give up five earned runs in four relief appearances this season, a span of 6 2/3 innings.

Keurin Feliz 1.0 0 0 0 0 2 0 0.00 S (2)

Game Notes - A three-run tenth gave the Giants a win over their west-valley rivals. The Angels had jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings, but the Giants started their comeback with a Leonardo Fuentes RBI double and an Eldred Barnett RBI single in the fifth to make it 5-2. In the eighth, Barnett led things off with a triple, and scored on a Garrett Buechele RBI single. Ben Thomas followed that with a two-run home run to tie the game. It went into extras, where Thomas hit an RBI double to put the Giants on top. Myles Schroder hit an RBI triple for insurance, and scored himself on a Gus Benusa sacrifice fly to make it a three-run lead in extra innings.

Team Notes - Thomas has gone 7-for-11 (.636) in three games this season, but his hits today were his first for extra bases...Barnett picked up his second two-hit game with a triple in three this season...Fuentes double was his first of the season, with 11 at-bats behind him...The Giants used seven pitchers today...Luis Angeles got the start after working as a reliever in his first appearance. He had a 1.85 ERA in the DSL last season...Miguel Ferrer has three strikeouts in each of his first two games this season...Keurin Feliz seems to be the team's closer, with two saves. He has yet to allow a baserunner in two innings of work.

Yay! Minor lines!

Also of note, it was Surkamp’s first start since coming off the DL with knee tendinitis.

Ask me about my blog.

What’s up with all of his lower-body injuries (hip flexor, knee)? Doesn’t he know that pitching prospects are supposed to go on the DL because of arm issues?

Thanks, Kevin! It’s good to see Ben Thomas off to a good start, and it’s good to see Payne get some SB’s and hits. And even on an 0fer day, Panik drew a walk.

OTOH, maybe Runzler would be better served learning his craft in Richmond. Or even lower.

What can (Gary) Brown do for you?

by Lyle on Jun 25, 2011 9:36 AM PDT reply actions

Thomas is an intriguing guy to me. He’s a power hitter that makes good contact, doesn’t K too much and shows patience at the plate. He also appears to be a smart and opportunistic baserunner in thm mold of BBelt, even though he only have average speed. He’s certainly a hidden gem in the 34th round of a draft where polished college power bats were in very short supply. I can’t wait to see what he does in the Cal League next year.

Payne has made some truly fantastic catches in CF already. His bat is iffy, but he appears to be a plus defender and baserunner already.

Moving Runzler to Richmond won’t make much difference. It’s not like the Grizzlies are in the running for the title. Runz just needs to pitch a lot of innings in an environment where his experimentations don’t hurt any team.

Depends on where Thomas ends up this year. Even if Oropesa goes to SJ, I see no reason why that precludes Thomas from being there too. The Giants had no issue with Joseph and Sanchez sharing C/DH this year in SJ. If Thomas bashes for the rest of this year and gets promoted to S-K then I think Augusta will be too low for him.

I really thought when they signed Max Ramirez he would be the catcher they called up because Sanchez isn’t ready, but Ramirez hasn’t caught an inning since he joined the team. They’re really fast tracking Sanchez, although Whiteside and Stewart have done better lately.

Buster Posey: Let's enjoy him before he goes to the Yankees because he wants to win the World Series. Wait, what???

With Stewart playing well defensively

Sanchez probably won’t get called up unless Stewart or Whitey got injured

Where's Chuckie?

Did he get suspended after getting tossed from the game on Wednesday, or is he getting “clear your head” time after posting a K% (PA) of over 55% the first few starts?

by TDonk on Jun 25, 2011 12:28 PM PDT reply actions

Chuckie to the DL

Jones was place on the 7-day DL today. Leo Ochoa was promoted from Scottsdale and Skyler Stromsmoe was demoted from Richmond to take his place (Chuckie is so good it takes 2 guys to replace him!).

Chuckie was definitely not injured when he got tossed out of the game on Wednesday, so he must have gotten hurt off the field or during practice. Hopefully, Rich can get the scoop for us.

What’s the catch? He has power, can walk, doesn’t strike out, what am I missing? I find it hard to believe that a college player from a pretty big school went completely unnoticed like that.
