Around SBN: Indy 500: Coverage of the 'Greatest Spectacle In Racing'

minor lines, 5/9/11

Monday highlights from the Giants farm: Adam Duvall homered and doubled while reaching base three times, Daryl Maday combined with two relievers for a shutout, and Shane Loux had 8.0 IP with 2 ER.

Star-divide

AAA: Fresno defeated Tucson 3-2
(scoring two runs in the bottom of the 9th inning)

Fresno: 1B Brandon Belt: 0 for 1, 3 BB, CS
Fresno: LF Travis Ishikawa; 1 for 3, 2B, BB (IBB)
Tucson: 1B Anthony Rizzo: 2 for 4, 2B, SO

Fresno: SP Shane Loux: 8.0 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 8 K--1 HR
Fresno: RP Henry Sosa: 1.0 IP, 1 K

Belt walked three times, raising his OBP to .537.  He now has more walks than strikeouts since returning to the PCL (16 BB vs 15 SO in 49 AB).  Was this also his first start at 1B since returning to Fresno?  Ishikawa was the only other Grizzly to reach base twice as his 8th double was one of just four hits for the Grizzlies.  The Padres' Rizzo was the lone player in the game with multiple hits.

Loux made perhaps the longest start by any Giants minor leaguer this year, at least in terms of IP.  He threw just 88 pitches (63 strikes) in 8 innings and had a 8/3 GO/FO line.  Sosa worked a perfect 9th inning.

AA: Richmond defeated Bowie 1-0

Richmond: SS Nick Noonan: 1 for 3, BB, 2 SO
Richmond: 2B Charlie Culberson: 1 for 3, HBP, SO, SB
Richmond: 1B Joe Koshansky: 1 for 3, 2B, BB, SO

Richmond: SP Daryl Maday: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K
Richmond: RP Ronnie Ray: 3.0 IP, 1 BB, 5 K

Noonan, Culberson, and Koshansky accounted for all three for the Flying Squirrels' three hits as they each reached base twice.  Noonan raised his OBP back above .300.

Although he came up shy of 6.0 IP, Maday had perhaps his best start of the year with a season-low 3 H and a season-high 7 K, although this was his first start this year with fewer groundouts than flyouts (4/5 GO/FO line).  He has allowed just 5 ER over his last four starts combined.  Ray has racked up the strikeouts over his last seven appearances with 18 K in 14.0 IP.  His ERA is just 1.35.

A+: San Jose had a scheduled off-day
(Their other scheduled off-day this month is May 24.)

A-: Augusta defeated Rome 4-3 (13 innings)
(after scoring two runs in the bottom of the 9th inning)

Augusta: 3B Adam Duvall: 2 for 4, HR, 2B, BB, SO
Augusta: LF Rafael Rodriguez: 0 for 5, 3 SO, GiDP

Augusta: SP Seth Rosin: 7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K--1 HR
Augusta: RP Stephen Harrold: 3.0 IP, 3 H, 2 K

Duvall's 5th HR and 8th double accounted for the GreenJackets' only multi-hit line as they had just five hits over thirteen innings.  Last summer's 11th round selection is hitting .242/.314/.427 through 124 AB in his first full season.  Raf-Rod had his second oh-fer with a hat trick in his last three games.  Since missing a week in late April, his strikeout rate has increased.  He has 12 SO in his last 35 AB after he had just 3 SO in his first 58 AB.

Rosin bounced back from his last start (7 R in 1.0 IP) to match his longest start of the year and also have his first start this year without a walk, helping to get his K/BB ratio above 2.00.  Harrold had his longest appearance of the year, with 3.0 scoreless IP lowering his ERA to 1.20.

Giants baseball: We're stupid enough to WIN that (TM)

Gotta start teaching them how to win the Giants’ Way.

Baseball players are smarter than football players. How often do you see a baseball team penalized for too many men on the field?

Yay?

Maybe

But he had a .584 OPS last year.

He is young for his level though. Know anything about his D at SS?

I would say he’s more age approrpriate for his level at this point than young for it.

So Belt’s OBP is pretty much equal to his OPS?

Torres and DeRosa obviously back to SF to be activated tonight. Hopefully Bochy does the right thing and benches Miggy and Rowand.

Buster Posey: Let's enjoy him before he goes to the Yankees because he wants to win the World Series. Wait, what???

by rxmeister on May 10, 2011 4:33 AM PDT via mobile reply actions

Bochy has said Torres might start at LF or RF until he's confirmed to be 100%

If Ross had continued to hit badly in Sunday’s game, the choice would have been obvious. But now, who knows.

Fortune favors the lucky.

Rosin

Even though he bounced back, just looking at his line it still looks pretty concerning in that he only struck out two hitters in 7 innings. Given that he gave up 7 runs in 1 inning his last time out I think there’s cause for concern.

Yeah, it’s a major concern, especially since his GB% is a very pedestrian 40% so far this year. If his GB% were 69%, like Matt Graham, I’d still be concerned, but a bit more hopeful. (Of course, Matt Graham’s BB% is over 15% and his K% is even worse than Rosin’s 15% at 9%.)

How can I find out...

the probable pitchers for the Grizzlies this week? They’re in town in Nashville (where I live) and would like to get a peek at any upcoming arms we’ve got.

Really?

The PCL extends all the way to TN? I was unaware of this phenomenon.

You’re not going to get a peak at any of our upcoming arms by seeing Fresno (at least not upcoming starters). But I’d imagine the Grizzlies website might have their pitching probables. Otherwise, you can figure it out the hard way by going here and checking the box scores going back the last week or so so you can get a feel for their rotation and then extrapolate forward.

Richmond's Woes

Five of the starting nine for the Flying Squirrels yesterday had season BA <.200, which might set some kind of record for a lineup in May. Seven of them had OPS <.650 entering the game (Nick Noonan raised his up to .657 by day’s end), and three of them had OPS <.600, including a microscopic .360 OPS for the (SSS) backup C Aaron Lowenstein who got a rare start, and an almost unfathomable .464 OPS for everyday starter (and league repeater) Roger Kieschnick.
