Is Ryan Vogelsong for real?

I am vey much starting to think he is. To me he is another Andres Torres. He is unexpected found money. I think he has the talent and make up to be not just a bottom of the rotation starter but a middle of the rotation starter on even a rotation as good as the Giants.

Whoa

Take 2 deep breaths. Now take a step back from the edge.

The odds of RV being a quality #5 starter for the Giants over the course of the rest of this season are not good. There are tons of examples of mediocre and below-average pitchers being very successful over 2-5 starts in the majors, only to sink back into mediocrity and obscurity soon thereafter. Are you forgetting how people thought about Ryan Sadowski after his first 3 starts? Let’s see if RV can keep it on track for another 2 months before we anoint him as the 3rd best starter on the team.

Stats are nice but they take too long to reach a conclusion. Scouting is much faster and as an amateur scout I am seeing a quality MLB starting pitcher.

One reason stats take “too long” to reach a conclusion is that conclusions only reveal themselves over the course of time. This is why one is generally cautioned not to jump to them.

We'll see

He’s been doing nice so far, but we’re just gonna have to see if he can keep it up, especially after the league starts to adjust to him.

Don't think he can cut it in the bigs? Brock Bond will be the bigger man and walk walk walk away.

By amateur scout, do you mean you’re a scout who doesn’t get paid? Or a scout who scouts amateur players?

So far, Vogelsong has been a quality starting pitcher

The stuff is definitely there, it’s the control that’s always been a problem. We saw that in the game against the Mets. It’s possible that he’s figured something out, or Tidrow/Righetti taught him something, but until I hear that’s the case I’m not going to assume it’s true.

That being said, he’s certainly been quite effective so far and earned himself a couple bad starts of leeway.

I hate people talking about 'The Next Andres Torres' without understanding what Andres did

Torres put up some very good minor league seasons before he came up to the majors and performed well.

Vogelsong has not.

I’m not sure I’d agree with “some”. Definitely one, maybe you could say two. The reason I thought you were going to say you hate people talking about “the Next Andres Torres” is that in a 150 years or so of major league baseball, it’s unclear whether there’s a precedent for what Torres did last year, which makes the “next” one as unlikely in our life times as another pass of Halley’s Comet.

That’s one of the things I love most about the the Giants in 2010 – the historic performances. In watching that pitching staff’s dominance, Posey’s amazing rookie year as a starting catcher and Torres’ big league redemption, we got watch things that just don’t happen normally. And TGWTWS.

I think you are missing the major part of what make Torres, Torres. He changed his GAME to succeed, as far as I know Vogelsong hasn’t changed anything.

The comparison to Sadowski is unfair, because Sadowski didn’t have good stuff and Vogelsong obviously does. The guy was once a top prospect, and yes, it’s possible that a hard throwing kid who had trouble finding the strike zone can harness his control in his thirties. As a Giants fan, I would rather enjoy what he’s accomplishing then throw cold water on it.

Almost certainly not, though it would be cool if he were.

I think if there is any optimistic comparison to be made, it should be to Schmidt, who was not quite so bad as Vogelsong before getting Righetti’d, but was still pretty bad. A downgraded Jason Schmidt seems like a fair comparison if you need to grab a bag of optimism.

And even then, I’d be damn cautious.

Gosh, I hope so.

Even a decent 5th starter/long relief/spot starter would be great since we are down Zito (to injury and to suck), and I’d like to be able to rest/spell Bumgarner a little.
