A good start (warning: sample size)

I don't know about you guys (and gals) but I am as pessimisitic and melancholic as good fan of 80s british post-punk rock can be. Yes, we may have won the world series but victory was only a temporary salve for my broodingly handsome and tormented soul. Why is this relevant? Because I was absolutely convinced that this the year that Timmy lincecum breaks (or at least falls from the ranks of super elite pitchers). In 2010, Lincecum experienced a 2 mph loss on his fastball, a decline in his k/9 below 10 and an increase in his walk rate above 3. Given his slight build and atypical delivery, Timmy looked to me like a guy on the way out. For a pitcher who lives off his changeup (it's probably the best change in baseball) velocity loss is lethal. So I watched with trepidation as the season started. So far lincecum has allayed my fear. Through his first 2 starts (at a time of the season when pitchers are still building strength) he had managed a 93+ mph fastball. Interestingly he has also abandoned his curve and upped his slider frequency. Regardless, I am currently very reassured. Now excuse me while I listen to the Smiths before I get happy

OH MY

Kenshin sighting!

Timmy looked to me like a guy on the way out

Really? I had the same thought in August, but he changed my mind in September, and October and November convinced me. Specificallly Game 5 of the WS, when he gave up an HR and BB in the 7th. The entire bullpen was available, why should he come back out again? He threw six pitches and then sat down.

Lincecum was too much fun to watch yesterday. When he’s ‘on’, he’s amazing.

Ask me about my blog.

by xanthan on Apr 7, 2011 7:11 AM PDT reply actions

Whenever he’s “on” I get excited about the possibility that he may break some records, or record some sort of game that does not involve baserunners, or save babies.

I’ve been watching baseball a long time, and while I’ve seen – like, actually seen – a few records broken, I’ve only ever seen one no-hitter and one baby being saved.

Thank you, Jonathan Sanchez and JT Snow, respectively. One day maybe Lincecum will join your ranks.

I was thinking 20 Ks after the first inning yesterday.

I (and a few friends) once upon a time had tickets to a game that ended up featuring a 20k performance and we never made it to the game because we stopped by Pizzeria Unos for dinner about a block from the park and ended up getting hammered and blowing it off. We saw it on the bar TV, but it wasn’t until about the 8th inning that it really started to dawn us that we might’ve kissed off a historic performance.

Get used to seeing more sliders

As great as we have seen Lincecum in the past, the slider completes his repertoire: changeup to get out RHB, now the slider to get our LHB, and he’s always had his fastball to get out either plus he’s upped his velocity this season with a return to his conditioning that gave him mid-90’s velocity regularly early in his career. That gives him 2 different Go-To pitches to get the hitters out, it really isn’t fair, he’s going to dominate hitters like they are minor leaguers.

I think he’s on to a Cy Young season and, while very hard to accomplish, I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up with a sub-2.00 ERA this season.

by non sequitur on Apr 7, 2011 9:17 PM PDT up reply actions

If Lincecum was so rubbery armed and legged, and torsoed, the should be able to pitch at least every 4 days.

Or maybe he should be able to pitch two or three days in a row. Imagine if he actually iced down his arm.

by bradleybear on Apr 7, 2011 8:27 PM PDT reply actions

He hasn't completely abandoned his curve.

He still uses it to steal strikes and give the hitter another look. But in terms of his declined usage of the pitch he actually stopped using it late last year and throughout the playoffs. It’s nothing new

Imagine. Lincecum still hitting 99-101 with the gun. Greatest pitcher of modern time??
