minor lines, 4/24/11

Sunday highlights from the Giants' farm: Among seven Grizzlies with multi-hit lines, Ryan Rohlinger and Travis Ishikawa both homered.

Star-divide

AAA: Fresno defeated Reno 12-5
(after scoring eight runs in the 5th inning)

Fresno: SS Ryan Rohlinger: 2 for 6, HR, SO
Fresno: 3B Conor Gillaspie: 2 for 3, 2 BB
Fresno: LF Brandon Belt: 2 for 4, 2B, BB, SO
Fresno: RF Travis Ishikawa: 2 for 5, HR, 2B, 3 SO
Fresno: CF Thomas Neal: 3 for 5, 2B
Fresno: 2B Edgar Gonzalez: 3 for 5, SB
Reno: CF Colin Cowgill: 2 for 5, HR, 3B, SO, GiDP

Fresno: SP Matt Yourkin: 5.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 6 K--2 HR, 1 WP

Seven different Grizzlies had multi-hit lines, led by Neal and Gonzalez who had three hits each.  Rohlinger and Ishikawa had their 4th and 1st HRs, respectively.  Gillaspie reached base four times.  Belt had another solid game.  Cowgill, one of the Diamondbacks top 30 prospects, had a good game with his 2nd HR and 1st triple.

Yourkin had less than a quality start, but it was good enough given his run support to secure his first win of the season.  He has allowed 4+ ER in three of his four starts.

AA: Richmond had a scheduled off-day

A+: San Jose had a scheduled off-day

A-: Augusta had a scheduled off-day

As the only “real” outfielder, CF is the likeliest spot for him, sandwiched between the two firstbasemen. I guess this gives more meaning to Thomas “Real Deal” Neal.

Yeah, I get why they're doing it

If Ishikawa is more versatile he has trade value, and Belt is in LF because Huff is signed for 2 years.

Still I’ve heard Neal’s LF defense is ~average. If he could be close to average in CF that would be huge

I wouldn’t get your hopes on that. Neal’s defensive MO is good instincts, good hands, poor range.

The all first base outfield

Pill has supposedly gotten some work at third, if they can stick Eldred at first they can have 5 guys who were considered firstbasemen at one time or another all in the lineup.

Imagine you could have a do-over with Fred Lewis, without the bad routes and melancholy. I grant you Chris Lofton.

If we can figure out a way to have a Burrell/DeRosa/Huff OF we could make an impressive attempt at it in SF, too.

Interestingly, Fresno has also had several games with Burriss playing the OF this year.

Rohlinger now has 938 pa’s in AAA with a line of .285/.363/.469. He’s as good a hitter as Tejada or Sanchez or Fontenot, I reckon.

His AAA MLE is .238/.290/.378. The only one of those three with an OPS lower than .688 is Tejada who sits at .556. I guess the realistic take home message here is that Tejada blows.

they are gone, but you can still enter the numbers for the calculator. I agree it seems unfair to the PCL, but his OPS across his entire MiLB career is still only .794 which makes it seem closer to real…

by capn on Apr 25, 2011 9:18 AM PDT up reply actions

Well, anyway, here are the rest-of-season ZIPS projections:

Rohlinger .255/.317/.386
Sanchez .279/.323/.392
Tejada .282/.313/.405
Fontenot .253/.315/395

Not much to choose from there. They seem to be laying an aggressive aging curve on Freddy, but then 33-year-old second basemen don’t have an encouraging history.

I am not as worried about 2B. The problem is that Tejada is currently batting .205/ .241/ .315 in what is definitely a SSS, but it is 79 PA which is not nothing. If you combine that dreck with his performance in ST and with his odious defense, you get something that is pretty much raw sewage.

On the other hand...

What have we seen from Burriss except two seasons recovering from an injured foot, and one year when he was rushed to the majors far too quickly.

While I don’t know there’s a reason to believe he can hit major league pitching, and I certainly wouldn’t have him replace Tejada, I don’t believe there’s a reason to give up on him yet. And the fact he’s exploded offensively while healthy so far (albeit small sample size) gives me hope for him.

I said something similar to this the other day, although I’d certainly backtrack from “exploded offensively”. Not sure when he’s had a season or even a month when that would be appropriate. Still, I hope for better things from him, so I wouldn’t want to DFA him just yet.

In a serious reply... (what's that?)

I expect we’ll be seeing Belt get the majority of his playing time in the outfield. That may be one of a few reasons he got sent down. If the Giants tried having him learn the outfield up there and he starts making mistakes, a lot of fans would turn on him quickly.

I expect you’ll see Pill and Ishi taking more turns at first, and switching between that and DH.

The real question is, where does Eldred fit when he comes back?

I’d think he fits on somebody else’s AAA team. I mean he’s only picked up as AAA positional fodder to begin with, and that position’s stacked, so why keep him? We have no investment in him. He’s got a long enough track record to have a decent handle on his potential value (not much), and he’s looked pretty terrible so far (ST included). I don’t see any reason for not releasing him without a second thought.

Hey, there’s some value to Fresno to having him. I know a lot of people only look at farm teams as developing for the majors, but the teams themselves have to at least break even and keep the fans interested.

Fresno’s one such team that has been a bit under attack, with one news report calling them a ‘drain on city finances.’

I know a lot of people up here wouldn’t give two you-know-whats, but big picture, with all the players that get pulled out of Fresno for the big league team, it’s not wrong to give them at least one star of their own to keep and hopefully get the team to the playoffs for the first time.

Man, I forgot about Eldred. =\

Does it seem likely as well that Belt will get most of his starts in LF? I base that assumption on Ross and Nate’s defensive abilities being optimized in RF, with Burrell then going to the bench.

If that’s the case, can Neal play RF?

Can he play it? Yes

But I think he’s a better fit for now in left, and I bet that, on a short learning track, they’ll play him there most, even with the general long-term think being that Neal will be the longer-term left fielder from the farm system.

Thanks. I agree with that assessment.

I guess we’ll have to wait until the dominoes start falling, but if Belt is going to get his starts in the OF, I’d rather it be in LF than RF because I think that’s the position he’s most likely to play in SF if/when he gets called up.
