At school, we were told to design a 5-10 second animation with a seasonal theme. Since it's Spring, I chose opening day for the San Francisco Giants. I thought I'd share it here with you all.

Do they emphasize thinking about the people downstream from you in the workflow? Because the animators we have at my work seem to make shit up as they go along and it’s a pain in my ass. Frame rate, codec, file names… whatever takes their fancy. I’ve always blamed Expressions for this, but not for any good reason – I just know a couple of them went there.

You should probably blame your managers for not implementing the standards that your specific workflow requires.
It seems to me that nearly every shop, even within the same industry, handles and works with media differently. I’m not sure it’s possible to cover the litany of real-world applications in the classroom and still be able to cover the proper amount of theory, aesthetics, and practice (software)… Just ask any Academy of Art student after they graduate how the over-emphasis (marketing) on tools in their curriculum winds up biting them in the rear later on.

I consider the whole group to be poorly managed, but I’m in a different group and intentionally keep a low profile. I just want to know if my bitter ruminations are at all accurate.

They do.
It’s strongly impressed upon us to be organized, consistent, and mindful of others who may work on our projects after us.
Of course, that doesn’t mean that many people still don’t have a mess of files that say “Joe’s FInal Final Final Final Final For Real.avi” with an After Effects file with 200 assets sitting loosely and a Final Cut file with 5 different sequences, each with their own settings.
I let that happen to me once while I was working on a project and it was a nightmare to clean up. I couldn’t imagine anyone else coming in after me and being able to make heads or tail of any of it, so it doesn’t happen anymore.
Good to know.
