As I sit here on the eve of another season, I find myself wanting to ask a favor of you, but kind of ashamed. Nevertheless, I am going to ask it. Giants, could you please win the World Series this season.
I know this sounds like a bit of a selfish request, especially after last season's magical run. I am fairly new to Giants fandom, having become a fan opening day 2009. At 29 years old I finally got into baseball enough to pick a favorite team. I had narrowed the list down to 5 candidates, and I was living in San Jose at the time.
I played Hooky on Opening Day '09 as my wife got Opening Day tickets, and I got to see Timmy beat the Brewers in an atypically high scoring game at AT&T Park. The Giants stormed out to a 3-0 lead, and I was suddenly had a new favorite team. When they won the World Series, I felt lucky. I mean I have Cubs fan friends who have never seen their team win the World Series. I have fans who are Indians fans, who have never seen their team win the series. I have friends who are Dodgers fans, who have to live with the fact that their archrivals have won the world series, and they cheer for the dirty whoring Dodgers who haven't won a World Series in 23 years. I even have friends who are Red Sox fans, who haven't seen their team win the World Series in four long years.
So with only two seasons and one World Series Title under my Giants fan belt, I feel that I have been handed a gift, and I would never complain or overreach as a fan. But the title this season, when you win it, isn't for me. It's for my son. You see he has been a Giants fan his entire life, and has yet to see the Giants win the World Series. He hasn't even seen the Giants win a game yet.
So please Giants, don't do it for me... Do it for the children. Specifically my child. And do it to show all those loser Dodger Children how futile and hopeless their lives really are.
