Roster stuff: 25- and 40-man, Fresno, San Jose, etc

Hi, all. I haven't been around much this offseason. I've mostly just been rolling around naked in piles of Giants world series memorabilia and attending Cactus League games (also while rolling around naked). Just want to say that I missed you all, except those of you who are jerks.

Star-divide

So, what's fi'n'a happen with the 40-man? Are people like Hinshaw taking up room on there that could be better used?

Who's gonna end up in San Jose, and what's the deadline for finalizing that roster? (I selfishly hope that Ehire Adrianza stays in A ball so I get to see him more.) Why is Wendell Fairley? Do we get Zach Wheeler?

Howbout that Brandon Belt character, huh? He looks pretty good. Did anyone else even notice Chris Ray leaving? Chris Stewart is no Steve Holm, which is a good thing.

That's all.

Sadly, Ehire wont be seen anywhere for awhile. There was a note from Baggs last week that Adrianza had torn or strained or somehow owied a ligament in his hand and would be on the DL for a month or so.

More than that

Thanks to AZGiants, who broke the news (sorry Baggs), it’s a torn ligament in his left hand he suffered while stealing a base (by his hand hitting the base, not by getting spiked). His left hand is his glove hand.

He will miss 8-10 weeks.

I didn’t think he did go in headfirst though. I’m trying to picture in my mind the 9th inning of that Dodgers game in ST (when Brown signalled Adrianza in for the win) and I thought Adrianza went into second in a regular slide but alongside the base instead of into it, and then reached out with his left hand to grab the bag.

According to here, Brown, Parker, Dominguez, and Joseph will be at SJ. Tools and LTP.

A little below the comment linked above, there are a few more names: Hector Sanchez and Cavan make sense for SJ.

Wheeler and Bucardo are probably in SJ as well, right?

I hope so re. Wheeler

I mean, he’s not going to repeat low A, so the smart money says SJ.

I saw Dominguez in that spring game too - floundered at the plate but was slick in the field - not holding out much hope for that dude.

Oh, I'm sure his peripherals will be horrible

But really, I’ll take a .900 OPS after a .782 last year. Dominguez isn’t now and won’t be a real prospect given his age-to-league issues unless he jumps to AA this year and starts next year in Fresno, but at this point I’ll take any improvement, even if it’s a shallow one.

I’m really starting to get genuinely excited about seeing what Brown can do with the aggressive assignment. (I’m much less excited about seeing what Parker can do with it).

Also, really hoping to see a solid season from a Chuckie/Rafrod OF duo in the SALLY.

by Roger on Mar 28, 2011 7:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Do you really think that Brown’s assignment to SJ is so aggressive? I mean, he is a very polished and advanced defender already, and has already shown that he has a good idea of what to do with the bat.

The Giants have typically put their top advanced college draftees in SJ over the past several years, as long as they at least go their feet wet in short-season, rookie league, or AZ Instructs ball the previous summer.

Crawford, Kieschnick, Gillaspie, Posey, and Belt, are prime examples that I can think of off the top of my head.

That’s why I won’t be surprised to see Parker in SJ too – where I predicted he’d start out when the thread was floating around last December.

I don’t think it’s “so” aggressive; I suppose I think it’s appropriately aggressive. The examples you list are all quite correct, but I could come up with a goodly long list of college guys in the top 5 rounds who started at Augusta as well.

The 2007 Augusta team was almost entirely made up of college draftees, many of whom were taken in the first 10 picks: Snyder, McBryde, Rohlinger, Pill, and Burriss taken in the 1S round spent most of that year in Augusta after a poor first month in SJ. Other high picks to start in Augusta would include the woefully overdrafted Jax, and Chris Dominguez and Nick Liles last year.

But yeah, on the whole, I’d say the assignment reflects the perfect amount of aggressiveness.

MY DAD WAS WRONG!
MY BOY NEEDS TO THROW HARDER!

by Roger on Mar 29, 2011 6:16 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't think it's aggressive at all

Brown’s already 22, and putting him in Low-A would give him age-to-league issues that would prevent everyone from properly evaluating him. He ought to start the season in San Jose; I think most early picks (10th round or earlier) out of college should assume an A+ assignment. Looking at that 2007 Augusta team, the only one there that could possibly stay at the ML level is Rohlinger, and even then only as a backup. I’m not saying that they should have been put in SJ, but if you’ve got a player coming out of college that projects to be something other than a backup, then you should put them somewhere higher than Low-A, because they should already be polished enough to handle that assignment.

Aggressive would be AA, especially considering the hitting environment.

I think that Dunning might have had a chance to start in SJ, but the starting rotation is just too deep this year. With Wheeler, Kickham, Bucardo, Rosin, Valdez, Heston and Salsbury all jockeying for starts, it doesn’t leave a lot of innings for Dunning – even if he were to come out of the pen.

I’m hoping that the Giants stick him in Augusta as a starter – where he has time to get stretched out and used to going every 5th or 6th day in a low-pressure environment in a pitcher’s league. If he does as well as I think he will then they can always promote him to SJ in July or August.

Heston and Salsbury shouldn’t be taking any starts away from anybody with potential, though I guess I won’t be suprised if they do. And Valdez really being able to put up the innings necessary for starting — that’s something I’ll believe when I see.

I really, really wish that they would leave 1 of Sanchez and Joseph in Augusta to start the season. Both of those young kids need to be catching full-time (5 days a week), and they’re not going to get that by sharing the position in SJ this season. If I were choosing, I’d stick Joseph back in Augusta – he’s got a ton of things to work on at the plate and behind it. Sanchez’s main issue is focus, discipline and desire – which can best be molded in SJ, under close scrutiny of all those eyes right up the road in SF.

I’m very excited about Kickham being groomed as a starter! Kickham and Runzler could really improve the high end SP depth of the system.

Also, since I’m a great believer in the value of unrealistic expectations, I’m going to just go ahead and start expecting Christian to be our next Andres Torres.

Yeah, I second your kudos to Brute and Joe Pun. I wish Joe would write more about his observations in the future. His photos are awesome, but nothing beats firsthand eyewitness scouting of these guys that very few of us have ever seen play in person.

I must say that I’m perplexed about Brute’s quote of “Rumors that Kickham may begin to be groomed into a starter role.” Kickham was always targeted to be a starter from the day he was drafted, that’s why he got the big $$$ to sign. The only reason that he was working out of the pen in the AZL at the end of last season was that they were limiting his pitch count. He had pitched so many innings during the 2010 college season, and then for his amateur summer league team in June and July, that the Giants weren’t going to tax his arm much in 2010. Besides, he said they had him throwing in the bullpen a lot to work on a couple of mechanical corrections throughout the month of August – before he made his pro debut.

Hinshaw and Burriss are both big black holes on the 40 man. I wish Sabes would just trade them already, and open up some room for guys like Kroom and Vogelsong.

They were both somewhat useful as insurance policies last season, but they’ve been past by on the depth charts by many others now. Right now I’d put Hinshaw behind Mota, Kroon, Edlefsen, and Loux on the reliever depth chart. I’d put Burriss behind Franchez, DeRosa, Fontenot, and Rohlinger on the 2B depth chart, and behind Tejada, DeRosa, Fontenot, Crawford, and Rohlinger on the SS depth chart.

If we need an injection of speed off the bench then Darren Ford and Tyler Graham are preferrable to Burriss IMO.

Kroon and Vogelsong don’t need to be on the 40 man at the moment though, unless one of them makes the squad. Otherwise they can be stashed at Fresno without taking up room ont he 40 man until necessary.

by Roger on Mar 29, 2011 6:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Agreed. However, both Vogelsong and Kroon are free agents if the Giants try to stash them in Fresno. They can walk away and sign with any other team that gives them a slot on the major league roster. I’d hate to lose either of those guys to another team (I could see the D=backs making a run at Kroon) because we were holding onto Hinshaw or Burriss. If the Giants put Kroon and Vogelsong on the 40 man, it makes it much more likely that they’ll take the assignment to Fresno with the idea that they’ll be the first arms up when the Giants have an injury or an ineffective reliever.

Absolutely zero power and doesn’t walk enough. Hard to play when you don’t have the eye or the stroke to keep pitchers honest. Adrianza supporters ought to be awfully concerned considering what happened with Burriss (okay, the defense is far superior and he’s more projectable, which will inevitably get him some kind of ML job, but Burriss got his chance too and look what happened).

Imagine you could have a do-over with Fred Lewis, without the bad routes and melancholy. I grant you "Chris Lofton":http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=lofton001chr

Yeah

Definitely not a prospect. IIRC he’s been in the system something like 7 years now? (OK, I looked it up — THIS will make his 7th year in the system.)

I guess playing minor league ball in the States beats going back to Curacao?

I think once your former SS prospect starts playing some 1B in the low minors, he’s definitely off the Prospect List™

Francisco Peguero

Anyone know where he’s going to end up to start the season? After that amazing ZIPs projection, I feel like i need to watch his progress more closely.

By the way, Delorean, will you come roll around naked at my house to cheer me up when the Ginats lose this season?

The thong is, it happened.

Frankie Pegs will be in Richmond to start the year. Speaking of which, how annoyed am I that the Flying Squirrels first trip up to town (Bowie) coincides with the Giants only trip to town.

That’s where the cloning experiments that you’ve been doing in your basement will come in handy.

AA

And I’m hoping that Peguero keeps doing well (and I am pretty high on him) but boy he has the potential to fail spectacularly next year

I've never been a believer

I’ve seen him do some crazy (good, impressive) shit, but he’s got a bad body and a questionable plate approach. His stint in AA will be very telling, and I’m not optimistic.

What do you mean by “bad body?”
