OT: My Beef With the Bonds Trial

Since I realize that G-Briz is effectively burying his head in the sand when it comes to the Bonds Trial, splitting his free time between writing about players even the die-hards have forgotten and trying to work out a deal to ship Natto to Lookout Landing for some more llamas, I thought I'd take a stab at it. My issue with the Bonds trial, outside of it being a colossal waste of tax payer dollars, is this: People were called before a grand jury to give sealed testimony while being promised immunity, however that testimony was leaked to the press. While steroids have been shown to have devastating effects on adolescents and teenagers, their effects on full-grown adult males are inconclusive at best and fairly harmless at worst (or vice versa depending on how you feel about them), but a nation full of individuals who are scared of being honest before a grand jury would have devastating effects on everyone.

I know that an inordinate number of the McCoven are LOLawyers, so please correct me if I'm wrong here so that I can edit this fanpost and deny I ever wrote such a thing, but to me leaking Grand Jury testimony is a far more serious crime than lying about whether or not you knowingly took steroids and its effects on our legal system are much more dire. Supposing that's true, why then wouldn't Federal Agent Jeff "Book Deal" Novitski focus his efforts towards finding out who leaked the testimony? Please understand here that I'm not saying that he should go after the writers or papers that published the story, they have a 1st Amendment right to publish the story, but they got that information from somewhere. Shouldn't that type of sensitive information at least leave enough of a paper trail to greatly reduce the number of possible suspects? Maybe Novitski could even use some real honest-to-God detective work to solve the case. Maybe he could rifle through their trash for a year like he did BALCO's.

Most Americans are not in fact lawyers, personally I've never been called to testify in front of a grand jury and don't actually know anyone who has. My only real knowledge of grand juries prior to BALCO was that they decided whether or not cases moved into the prosecution phase and if I had been called to testify in front of one while being promised immunity and being told that my testimony would be sealed, I probably would have given very little thought to testifying. However, if I was called before a grand jury today to give sworn testimony about, oh I don't know, say the shooting of AJ Piershitski, I'd probably still testify, but I'd really have to think about it. I'm sure that others who have reluctantly watched the Bonds trial unfold wouldn't feel comfortable anymore.

Personally, I don't care that Bonds used steroids, hell everyone was using steroids and he was still the best. I've read Bonds' testimony and it seemed to be sculpted towards plausible deniability while protecting his image. I think that by and large most people, even non-Giants fans, agree that this entire trial is an enormous waste of resources and people' s time, but I think the scarier thing here is not what's happening with steroids in America, but what's happening to our judicial system.
