What happens if Miguel Tejada gets injure or just plain sucks?
I know that Miguel Tejada is our plan right now but if he gets hurt or just can hit, what is our backup plan. Mike Foutenot doesn't inspire me as an everyday shortstop. And Mike Derosa doesn't seem to have the range to play it. How about our minor league options? Or trading for somebody with a little range and can hit a bit. But please no no no more Brian Bocock experiment.

I want to trade for someone...
but there is no SS on the market that would be a lot better than a Fonty/Derosa split
Fontenot, followed by DeRosa
Don’t trade out of desperation, that’s how bad deals are made.

No.
But a couple dozen innings of relief doesn’t really prove anything either. That’s the problem with mid-season trades for relievers: luck can easily trump talent in ~30 IP. A great trade on paper can easily turn out terribly in a three month time frame, or vice-versa. That’s why you’ve got to grade mostly on process rather than results in short-term trades.

Also, I was going to post something about Ramon Ramirez, but in looking up his stats he posted a 0.67 ERA with a 15:11 K:BB. Holy crap.
Anyway I liked that Ramirez-Turpen deal because Turpen’s upside was essentially a replacement level MR
I don't recall mentioning that particular trade here
And the inverse would be you are suggesting that every desperation trade works out like the Lopez deal did? Cause both are pretty silly.

I merely pointed out a trade that was made out of desperation that seemed to have worked out pretty well. Of course there’s no way of knowing what would have happened had the trade not been made, but I think the odds of the Giants winning the WS go down without Lopez.
The thong is, it happened.

Since Runzler and Affeldt were both hurt
And the best lefty reliever in the minors was Hinshaw, it sure seemed that way
The thong is, it happened.
I was a kind of fake desperation, though.
Runzler and Affeldt were coming back (in fact, Runzler looked really good when he returned in limited time, but Lopez had virtually usurped hi role), and the team had done just fine the previous few weeks without a lefty. I always found it a bit funny because the mystique of the lefty specialist is almost as ridiculous as the mystique of the closer.

Personally, I’d like to see if Rohlinger can hack it at short. I really don’t believe in Fontenot’s arm and DeRosa’s probably not someone we should rely on. Crawford should spend the year in AAA, Adrianza’s not even close to ready, and Rohlinger might do something. He probably wouldn’t be any worse offensively than Fontenot, and no worse defensively than DeRosa, and if he spends a couple weeks sucking then send him back down and put DeRosa there.

This is the line I’d stand in. But since it wasn’t one of the choices, I actually voted “Adrianza” because I don’t want to ruin Crawford, who I see as next year’s SS.
So yes, I’d sacrifice Adrianza to protect Crawford. Ehire not hitting in the majors will come as no surprise to anyone, and thus won’t lower his theoretical trade value.

Not with that contract
Heres why: because Sabean decided to spend $6.5 million on Tejada, so no way he’ll stretch the payroll another $12 million mid-season while still having to pay Tejada that money. Plus, come on, this is Brian Sabean we’re talking about. That would be a big big deal, and Sabean’s track record would in no way suggest that he would go for that type of deal mid-season. Not for a young star, even if his health is a bit of a question mark. Maybe that isn’t absolute, but it won’t be Reyes. The Mets will find another team with the prospects and the money for his full salary. And that is not the Giants. It would take nothing short of highway robbery for the Giants to snag Reyes, and I don’t see that happening for a player at a premium position and with that type of recognition.

The 40 man
The 40 man roster will likely dictate this move the most. Brandon Crawford only comes up if Tejada or Burriss is DFA’d. It really wouldn’t surprise me if both are off the roster come June anyway, but I think mngt looks to the 40, for players like Rohlinger first.

Adoptive father of Caleb Hous.... hous... housyourdaddy?
Yeah, I think that Rohlinger would be the first in-house option that Sabes would consider. He’s on the 40 man, and he has some major league experience. If Crawford is hitting halfway decent in Fresno then he would also be an option (in the scenario where Tejada was injured). If Tejada goes on the 60 man IR then it should open up a spot on the 40 man for Crawford.

Let’s trade for Tulowitzki, despite him having signed a bazillion-a-year contract extension, trading within a division rival is nuts, and having no trading chips on our team to get him in the first place. But gosh darn it… just make it happen.
WHADDARYA WAITIN FOR SABES??!!!
Don't think he can cut it in the bigs? Brock Bond will be the bigger man and walk walk walk away.
Boston is the ideal trade target
First off, unless Tejada goes on an extended and severe run of suckiness during the vast majority of the first half of the season then Sabes will stick with him as the starting SS. One only has to look at our recent past experiences with season-long failures like Aaron Rowand, Bengie Molina, and Randy Winn to realize this. Sadly, unless Tejada gets injured, or he’s hitting below .230, with more than 15 errors, by the time we hit the middle of June then he will be our starting SS at least through August. Sabes won’t admit his mistake until it’s really late in the season, and Bochy doesn’t really have a viable option to replace Tejada like he did last year when he could play Torres over Rowand, and Uribe over Renteria.
If Tejada does get hurt for an extended period of time, or he sucks so much that it starts affecting the starting pitchers and our ability to compete for the NL West title, then I think Sabes will look outside the org for a replacement in the July and August time frame. If he does, I think the best option for a trading partner will be the Red Sox. The Sox have Marco Scutaro who is in the final year of his contract and due to make $6M this season. He does have a $6M club option/$3M player option (with a $1.5M buyout clause) for 2012, which could be a nice backup plan if he plays well for us and we want to keep him in 2012. He’s likely to be a Type A free agent (but will certainly be a Type B), so we will get at lieast 1 draft pick in compensation if he walks away after we offer him arb.
Why would the Sox trade Scutaro? Well, they have a good young SS named Jed Lowrie already playing in the majors, and they have a defensive wunderkind named Jose Iglesias waiting in the wings for 2012 and beyond. Lowrie had an excellent 2010 season with the bat and glove, he’s about 27 years old, will become arb-eligible this coming offseason, and is under team control through the end of the 2014 season. Iglesias will likely start the 2011 season in AA, but if his bat is halfway decent then he’ll be in AAA by the end of the year. By all reports, the Sox love Iglesias. He is already a plus, plus defender at SS, and they’re jsut waiting for his bat to mature before they hand him the starting SS role.
If I were Sabes, I would target Lowrie. However, he would cost much more in a trade (at least 2 top prospects or 1 top prostpect and an above-average major league reliever/starting pitcher). Scutaro would be much easier to pry away – the rumors of the Sox shopping him have already been floating around during ST.

Reyes will likely be too expensive both from a salary and prospect perspective. I too would have like JJ Hardy, because defense doesn’t slump the way offense does, but oh well. I hope Meh-guel can have a good year this year, but here’s the thing: Baggs is usually one of the last people to flat-out call someone out, and he’s been writing a lot of late about how bad Meh-guel looks, which is not a good sign. I would expect that Tejada is out as the everyday SS by June and I’d think that one of the SS’s who changed teams over the offseason, like Hardy, could be available again, but if not it will be Scutaro or Lowry, with Scutaro being more likely because he’ll be cheaper.

Hardy
I think that we’d have to really knock the O’s socks off with a trade package to get Hardy this season. They really don’t have any replacement prospect anywhere close to being major league ready for years to come. The one caveat would be if he’s really a black hole with the bat this year. In that case, there’s no way that Sabes would want to trade for him as a Miggy replacement.

Not necessarily saying it will be Hardy
Just that with Hardy and Bartlett both changing teams, I think one or the other could be had come June/July, however the price and likely performance will be better with Scutaro and Lowry.

Hardy's contract
If I am reading the tea leaves on Cot’s correctly, Hardy will be FA next year. If I were the O’s and I am 722 games out of 1st place by June, I would trade Hardy for Crawford straight-up. I unload salary and get cost control for 6 years on a guy who is ML-ready with the glove and might turn into Rich Aurillia (non-2001 Aurillia) with the bat (fake bunts not included). I don’t know if I do this if I am the Giants. Of course, I am not Sabes, so who knows?

Fielding is subjective, but everyone subjectively agrees that Tejada’s glove isn’t good. Therefore if he doesn’t hit, he may not even have the value of a replacement level player, so his health isn’t really a factor.

He’s about to turn 37, his glove is such that he got moved to third base last year, and he hasn’t hit outside of Enron Field in more than three years. There’s no shortage of warning lights flashing.
I'm not saying I don't agree with you
I have read Bagg’s tweats and understand that Tejada is not looking well. I’m just saying that as long as he’s healthy and playing sub-mediocre (not Neifi-bad), he’s going to play. And the guy is durable, if nothing else. You might think there is a good shot at him being absolutely terrible, and I won’t argue that, but he wasn’t good last year and the Giants still signed him, so I don’t think expectations are very high. Thus, given his durability, I am suggesting that there are more likely needs for replacements at just about every other position on the field.
I will give you the rundown using the “safe/old/fat/slow/broken” scale:
1B: old
2B: old (for a 2B), broken
SS: old (but durable)
3B: fat
LF: slow, oldish (Burrell) / broken, old (DeRosa)
CF: sometimes-broken
RF: safe
C: A golden god

reasons why you don't want young
1. Contract 3y/48M
2. He is turning 35 at the end of the year
3. He was a terrible fielding SS
4. He is a terrible fielding 3B
Given the lack of quality ML SS
Nobody is going to part with a young quality SS, and we seem incapable of producing any from the farm. That’s why the Rockies locked up Tulo for all eternity. He’s certainly better than any of the crappy backup infielders we’ve stockpiled. Remember how Huff and Burrell were terrible fielders and were too old?
These are my principles. If you don't like them, I have others. -Groucho Marx
huh?
Last season Huff was signed for 3M, and Burrell got a minor league deal. Those were both low risk deals that worked out great for the Giants. Young is a bad defensive SS who hasn’t played the position since 2008. Investing 48M on a guy who is a bad SS, and who has had a sub .700 OPS away from TBiA 2 of the last 3 seasons is one of the worst ideas I have read this offseason.
I didn't say Huff/Burrell were too expensive
But both were considered on the decline, and not great fielders. Both turned out to be bargains.
These are my principles. If you don't like them, I have others. -Groucho Marx
what?
Burrell was a bad LF, who is still a bad LF. Huff was considered a below average 1b, who fielded slightly above average last season. The success of low risk older players like Huff and Burrell is not evidence that the Giants should take on a crappy fielding SS who is owed 48 million over the next 3 seasons. It’s a bad idea, just let it go.
I don't think Burrell's defense hurt the team all that much
His range is clearly limited, but he catches the balls he gets to and even made a couple of really nice plays. He has a good arm and hits the cutoff man, so I didn’t see him as a guy who was giving up a ton of runs with his glove.
The thong is, it happened.
I could of sworn in some article, Young had stated he did not want to play for the Giants if the Rangers were to attempt a trade with the G-Men. If that’s the case, would you want a player who does not want to play for your team?
Looking back
I wish Sabes would have just resigned Renteria for 2M and traded for Brendan Ryan. Platoon and bat them 8th. Could have saved 3-4M.
I was on this board from the beginning.
Renterias glove is likely at least equal to or better than Tejada. And he might also be a better hitter at this point than Tejada. For $2MM I’da gone for Rent injury risk and all. Plus, he proved he still had something left in the postseason when he was healthy. I’ve preferred Renteria over Tejada all offseason, let alone with Tejadas terribly overpaid contract for this year.
Imagine. Lincecum still hitting 99-101 with the gun. Greatest pitcher of modern time??
by Vaccaro on Mar 22, 2011 11:30 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Not much of a platoon, since neither one of them can hit RHPs. Ryan can’t hit anyone, but his glove’s probably good enough to just let him start.
It might have taken more than $2M
Since Rent still saw himself as a starter. I think reality didn’t set in for him until he had to settle for the Reds’ offer.
The thong is, it happened.

Again Brandon Crawford makes the cut in Spring Training. Which may show the Giants thinking if Sandoval and Tejada can not field a lick. They will need someone who can field.
I will say one thing about Crawford he is reducing his strickout and increasing his BB. If he can continue to hit with power we will have ourselves one heck of a SS.
I am hoping this will be his breakout year. Like Belt last year.
So what's the problem?
Everything you might have heard about Miguel Tejada’s difficulties this spring is true. He rarely barrels up a baseball at the plate. On the field, his range is nonexistent and most of his throws to first are weak, even on routine plays. He looks his age and then some.
