Giants' 2011 minor league rosters begin to take shape
Eight of the 21 players that the Giants cut from their major league ST camp this week have been officially assigned to specific minor league teams. According to BA, they are:
San Francisco Giants
Optioned to Triple-A: RHP Henry Sosa, LHP Alex Hinshaw, LHP Clayton Tanner, 3B Conor Gillaspie, OF Thomas Neal
Optioned to Double-A: SS Ehire Adrianza, OF Francisco Peguero
Optioned to high Class A: RHP Jose Casilla
I would say that only the Jose Casilla assignment is controversial - if you really want to stretch the issue. There was some conjecture in the offseason that Casilla might be sent to AA Richmond, based on his excellent 2010 season in Augusta, his relatively advanced age, and the likelihood that he will remain a reliever in 2011. I didn't see anything written about how Casilla did in ST, but based on his stats he didn't seem to be very impressive in his short relief stints.

Casilla actually had a pretty disappointing 2010, IMO, as his K rate plummeted. Not that that’s the only thing that matters, but it’s pretty important.
Has anyone heard how the Noonan, Bond, Culberson, AA/AAA clusterfuck is going to play out? Culberson has to be going to AA and I have always sort of assumed they’d just promote Noonan to AAA, despite his struggles last year. I would guess that leaves Bond SOL, which is too bad.

Noonan got moved to SS
if I am not mistaken. I don’t know what that means for the Crawford/Adrianza mess, I would assume Crawford starts in AAA, but I wonder what they’re going to do with Adrianza.

I would guess whoever looks more impressive in Minor league ST camp
Goes to AA while the other goes back to A+.

Well
It says here that Adrianza was assigned to AA. I assume Crawford is going to be the AAA SS.

I think the assignments are pretty fluid this time of year, though. They might hint at where a guy will start, but I wouldn’t consider it official.

I disagree. I think these are hard assignments at this point. Sure a specific prospect could go on a hot streak and possibly change minds, but all 8 of these guys were in the major league camp for around 4 weeks and all of the evaluators had a chance to see them practice and play. There’s no reason for the Giants to specifically send notification to the MLB Front Office at this time that these 8 guys were being assigned to a specific team if the decisions weren’t basically finalized. MLB rules do not require the Giants to be that specific for at least another 10 days. All they had to notify them was that they were being sent to the minor league ST camp.

I agree, there’s jillions they haven’t said anything about, I don’t know whay kind of point there would be in faking out the Eastern League or something. I suppose injury might change something.

I have a dim recollection from years previous that these ST assignments didn’t always correlate to where they end up but I can’t actually remember specifics. I think there is a procedural element though. Of course the work at minor league camp plays a huge role, too. I do remember the year when the Norwich teams website did a preview of the team about a week out and one of the players to watch for was “starting RF Nate Schierholtz” who ended up in a last minute decision back in SJ for the season.

It's warm in Richmond this year
Fairly mild winter and has been in the 70’s for the last week. Don’t know if that will have any affect on what they decide to do or not?

I was chatting with a scout at ST in the beginning of March, and he said that the MiLB rosters were basically set in the winter and that very little that happened in camp would influence that. True?
Probably very true for the AA and AAA level. Barring injuries on the major league club, or to other prospects, I believe that the vast, vast majority of the AA and AAA rosters are decided by the end of the calendar year. Of course, a given prospect can have and eye-opening ST and earn a higher league roster spot, but I believe that’s rare. I think that the A+ and low-A rosters are a bit more fluid and dependent on what the Giants see in the prospects during ST.

Noonan was playing at 3B in ST, not SS. I’m assuming that Noonan will play 3B in Richmond to start out the season, Culbie will be at 2B, and Adrianza will be at SS. Noonan might revert to 2b if either he or Culbie get promoted to AAA during the season.

interesting
Fresno’s roster may not have the same star power as last year, but it’s looking far more intriguing. I’m waiting to get a look at Adrianza, I’ll have to wait a little longer.

I think Neal is going to terrorize the PCL
Juan "Doesn't Cheat The Game" Perez, future CF for the World Champion San Francisco Giants.
Totes this
I’ve always loved his swing and after looking at his 2nd half AA splits had a feeling he had “put things together”. He’s done a few interviews since where he spells out exactly that. There’s this feeling that he will go all Cal league in the PCL. The swing is pretty though. So classic.
by Rorsavelt on Mar 19, 2011 4:50 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Also
Neal is a thinker, just like Posey and Belt. They are all smart, you need only listen to them a little to know these guys have the brains to excel past the average (exceptional) physical gifts that all draftees have.
by Rorsavelt on Mar 19, 2011 4:58 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions
Disagree
Neal is a guess hitter, who decides whether or not he’s going to swing before the ball is even thrown and is not even in the same conversation as Belt and Posey. Neal’s ceiling is everyday player, but I think he projects to being a 4th OF, while Belt and especially Posey have the potential to have HOF type careers. Not saying they will, but that’s their ceiling vs. Neal’s.

if Belt ends up there, I would imagine it is about the same
Pill at 1b
Bond at 2b
Rohlinger at 3b
nobody at ss
Jesus in LF
Graham in CF
Borchard in RF
Posey at C
vs
Belt
Bond/Noonan/Gillaspie
Crawford
Rohlinger
Neal
Ford (?)/Graham (is he still in the system?)/someone else
Not sure who would be in RF
not sure who would be at C. Sanchez? Williams?
Looks about the same.
I’m guessing by star power he meant replacing Posey and Bumgarner with just Belt.

yeah, I suppose
Belt and Neal are pretty good though and the rest of the cast appears to be about the same.
It’s going to be interesting to see what happens to Rohlinger, assuming Gillaspie, Crawford, and (as mentioned by Roger above) Burriss all end up in Fresno.
I’m rooting for Ryan because he is a nice guy and gave my son one of his bats, but he might be squeezed out in that scenario.
would he really get squeezed out of playing time by Gillaspie? Seems like Rohlinger would still be either the 1st or 2nd choice to be called up if there’s an injury to any one of Mole, Fontenot, Tejada, Sandoval, or DeRosa.
Thing A
"Correlation between inability to use the reply button and general crappiness of analysis: pretty high." -Sleepy Freud
I would imagine that they would want to get Gillaspie at bats
perhaps they can rotate between DH and 3b?
I don’t get the impression that they think Ryan is a great long term prospect, but again I don’t know what they think of Gillaspie either.
I think Rohlinger will be groomed as a super-utility guy in Fresno. They’ll give him starts at SS, 3B, and 2B, but he won’t be a regular at any 1 spot. Given his career path we have to assume that the Giants see Rohlinger’s most likely role on the major league club (if he makes it that far) will be as a super-utility bench guy in the mold of Uribe.

Already groomed for superutil role
Giants have been talking about him in this role for a couple of years already. I figure 2012 is the year they start using him up in the majors, unless they find someone cheap and good in free agency.

This. Is. Awesome
Peguero and Adrianza, should be a lot of fun to watch. Although I will miss Crawford’s D, but not his fail at the plate. Also, I guess I’ll have to run the Thomas Neal fan club remotely this year. I’m guessing Culbie will be at 2B, which should be intriguing as well, hopefully I’ll see Wheeler before the year’s done.

Adrianza will probably make you forget about Crawford, in both respects
Yeah
I understand the D is unbelievable and the stick is just not there. That being said if his glove is that good, he only needs to hit .250 in the show to be valuable.

I feel like he should hit for a better avg than he does with his speed
I mean he’s already fairly patient, so if he can end up putting up a .275/.350/.330 line I’d be very happy.
Also, I find it amusing that he out slg’d and out Iso’d Wendell Fairley last year
Yeah, but does Adrianza look cool on a motorcycle? That’s the key comparison.

for now this seems to be the prospect thread
Gillespie to Fresno kind of overcrowds the infield like was pointed out. Burris, Crawford, Rohl, Bond already for 3 spots. Noonan can wait in Richmond, and take some shortstop reps from Ehire who doesn’t need the fielding practice.

I just rememeber last year
being pretty high on Dominguez, and then they sent him to Lo-A and I was ready for him to toe the rubber instantly
So you weren’t impressed with his hitting? Details, please!

So will Brown and Parker split time in CF like Peguero and Perez did last season?
by BestHyperboleEver on Mar 23, 2011 7:58 AM PDT up reply actions
I doubt it
I love Parker but Brown is an excellent defender, and Parker has the better arm so he’s probably a RF. I’d guess they might it split it 70/30 but Brown will likely get most of the reps
I don’t think they’ll split time, but I do think that Parker will probably get about 1 start a week in CF – as long as his bat is up to the task. Yes, Brown should be a plus, plus defender in CF, but I’ve seen Parker play in college and he’s already a plus defender in CF – with the abililty to develop into a plus, plus defender down the road.

SJ Giants preview links
I haven’t seen these posted anywhere, but Joe Ritzo has been posting rosterbations on the SJ site. I’d assume they have some basis in reality although some are from the beginning of the month.
Catcher: Tommy Joseph and Hector Sanchez?
Corner IF: Chris Dominguez, Luke Anders, Josh Mazzola, Joseph, Joel Weeks, Juan Martinez?
Middle IF: Adrianza, Ryan Cavan, Carter Jurica, Martinez?
Outfield: Gary Brown, Dan Cook, Nick Liles, Ryan Lollis, various holdovers (Fairley, Simmons, Mazzola)?
There’s an article about starters but it’s even older.

Adrianza’s out for the 1st 6-8 weeks of the season, but if he wasn’t then I have to believe that he was ticketed to start in Richmond in April. As it is now, I could see the Giants putting him back in SJ for 4-8 weeks once he can play again.

I wouldn't be so sure
Adrianza didn’t hit well at all in SJ, and it’s not like there’s anyone in Augusta or a 2010 draftee (Jurica is the only guy I can think of) that would push him up a level. He’s still way young, so there’s no rush, might as well keep him close to the big club and in a hitting-conducive environment until he shows he’s got a bat.
