Chip Buck joins the horde of ESPN "analysts/pundits/experts" on drinking the haterade. Well guess what? STFU because we're still the WORLD CHAMPIONS. Sit down and go back to the East Coast Buck.

You don't say...
Chip Buck walks the tight rope of the Red Sox-Yankee rivalry by contributing to both Fire Brand of the American League, a blog about the Boston Red Sox, and It’s About the Money Stupid, a blog about the New York Yankees.

He's a bitter fan ...

I read that too and thought that would be like someone writing blogs for the Giants and Dodgers.

Really?

Isn’t Chip Buck spot on? There will be regression (and hopefully improvement by others), injuries and luck will affect the outcome.

You could write the same article every year and it would be correct. We had a lot of things break our way last year and won the WS. It was awesome and I hope it happens again but it probably isn’t likely, right?

Hmm

I’m with Marcello on this and maybe my original argument was a little too simplistic.

I’m obviously hopeful that the Giants can repeat and maybe some of Chip Buck’s arguments are silly or formulaic but I think we need to stop worrying about respect from the “national” media/blogsphere, etc.

We are not likely to repeat. I hope we do. I look forward to the journey.

I’m excited that repeating is even a realistic possibility.

Actually, there are a lot of reasons to think the hitting and pitching could both be better this year

Expecting regression and injuries seems kind of unfounded. That’s why the Giants are generally considered the favorite to win the division. Obviously, the playoffs are anyone’s guess, so his premise that the Giants won’t repeat is kind of an easy bet. But he seems to argue that they got lucky, which we all know is bullshit.

There are few reasons to think the pitching could be better

There are a lot of reasons to think it could be much, much worse (mostly injury related).

The hitting could be better, but we’re also relying on some old dudes with pretty spotty track records. Most importantly Huff. If he doesn’t crater, the roster is built with enough flexibility to survive most of the other guys not playing well or getting hurt. If he does, we’re probably in trouble.

by marcello on Mar 17, 2011 4:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Much much worse?

I don’t buy that.

Short of catastrophic injuries, the Giants are going to be atleast decent pitching-wise, with a pretty excellent chance at being good to very good.

The Giants had the equivalent of a bad injury last season with Todd Wellemeyer and Joe Martinez getting as many starts as they got while Bumgarner wasn’t on the team. They still managed 92 wins with an average offense.
And I think it’s reasonable that the Giants could match the offensive production of 2010. Possibly be better. They have offensive options coming out the old wazoo with guys like DeRosa, Fontenot, Rowand and Schierholtz coming off the bench and with Belt in the wings and Sandoval back in shape… So personally, I feel pretty okay if someone gets injured or flat-out underperforms cuz I think they’ll be able to make up the difference or come close to it.

by AmorVincitOmnia on Mar 18, 2011 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions

This is so dumb
As such, it’s probably fair to assume that at least one or two of the Giants’ five regular rotation members will spend at least a few weeks on the disabled list during the upcoming season. With whom will they replace their injured starters? Right now, their "sixth starter" is projected to be Jeff Suppan — or as I like to call him, the epitome of replacement-level pitching. If that doesn’t strike fear into Giants fans, quite frankly nothing will.

He is saying that we are in bad shape because our “sixth starter” is Jeff Suppan, who is a replacement level talent? No shit, that’s why he’s the 6th starter. Come on now. That’s a non-issue IMO.

by kezargiants on Mar 17, 2011 2:35 PM PDT reply actions

I got to agree with him.

A team with Jeff Suppan or Todd Wellemeyer getting a solid portion of starts throughout the course of a season couldn’t possibly win the World Series.
Oh wait….

I am sick of the argument that no pitchers got hurt last year, so we’re “due.”. That’s not how injuries or statistics work, folks. Knock on wood but Zito, Cain, and Lincecum have all been very durable for their careers… Maybe that changes this year but it’s no more likely than it’s been in previous years, IMO.

Well, yes and no.

Lets say that major injuries are essentially random with a 1 in 5 probability of happening to any particular pitcher. The Giants top-5 starters last season all managed to avoid injury. That doesn’t make them “due” in the sense than the base chance of injury goes higher, but that 1 in 5 risk per pitcher is hugely higher than the 0 in 5 reality that occurred last season. “Due” is a loaded word with a connotation that doesn’t quite fit, but the underlying idea that the Giants were fortunate last season in a way that they probably won’t be going forward is fairly accurate.

You know why repeating is so hard to do?

Because winning it in the first place is really hard to do.

This site really needs to let go of getting riled up at every pundit that says the Giants won’t likely repeat. Never mind the fact that they’re right (even if they use convoluted logic to get to their point), it’s just become whining about respect here. Do you really want to be seen the same way as Red Sox fans? Because they went from lovable losers to insufferable douchebags pretty goddamned quickly with self-entitled behavior like this.

I think it wouldn't be a problem if they said that

But that’s not what they’re saying.

Buck’s points are that the Giants are relying on a career year from a guy who’s been really inconsistent, are hoping their key players don’t get hurt, and they signed an older shortstop. This is stupid.

First, Huff looked great last year by any measure. Grit guys like the inside-the-park homer, the RBIs and the nice BA. Stat guys like the excellent walk rate (which is supposed to normalize quickly and comes with the concurrent addition of Meulens as hitting coach) and the power without the strikeouts. The positive UZR is a little more strange, but perhaps it’s because in 2009 he actually played 1B for an extended period of time, carried it over into this year, and also stayed in the field all year. I don’t expect him to be a great fielder, but he probably won’t be giving away runs left and right.

Second, the pitchers didn’t get hurt. Well, if they did, we’d probably be screwed, because anytime you lose a key player or two that really hurts your season. Just ask the Red Sox and Mets. Can’t win games when your stars are hurt unless you’re just stupidly good. But that’s a problem for every team, not just the Giants. Why aren’t the Phillies or Yankees getting the same treatment from their aging offenses?

Third, Miguel Tejada. Well, what did you want Sabean to do? Bartlett would have been fine, but I’d rather spend money than prospects AND money, and Bartlett isn’t a safe bet to be better anyway. I never thought Hardy was actually available until he got dealt, and maybe Sabean suffered from the same delusion, but he’s got a similar problem anyway (though he’s probably a better pickup than Tejada anyway). Uribe went to the Dodgers for too much money. Renteria wouldn’t take what I thought was a lowball offer, but he wasn’t worth much more, so it’s hard to get upset about that. Brendan Ryan can’t hit. We’ll never know if Marco Scutaro was really available. All things considered, Tejada wasn’t a bad pickup.

But these are all things you and everyone else around here already knows. The problem is, we’re sick of people out there talking like these are problems that need to be addressed. It’s like they’re looking for reasons the Giants are going to fail, and for some reason won’t accept that the Giants are a good team who may very well fail because winning a championship is that hard. Still, if they’re going to look for reasons, why not get creative? The bullpen could be a problem; we’re deep, but like the rotation, losing a member or two could prove the difference in a tight division. Plus, it’s not the kind of loss where you really think the team could go down because of it; losing Wilson would hurt, but few think that it could cost us the division like losing Lincecum. And why not point out the relative lack of offensive stars? Instead of pointing out how Huff could regress, say that even if Huff hits as well as he did, we’re still counting on Burrell and Sandoval to come out strong, Torres to keep hitting like Not-Rowand, Sanchez’ various limbs to hold up, etc. For a team with a deep bench now, we could have issues considering the number of players in the lineup who are one bad season from being considered a minor league invite.

But all these articles are saying the same things. Either find something new or shut up; I’m sick of the repetition.

In the spirit of longwinded nitpicking
Third, Miguel Tejada. Well, what did you want Sabean to do?

Whether there was a better alternative to Tejada is irrelevant, he’s on the team and he’s likely to be a win or more worse worse than 2010 Uribe. If your argument is about the Giants chances of repeating, a downgrade is a downgrade is a downgrade; the reasons why it occurred are irrelevant. Even if the Giants had kept Uribe, it would still be worth noting that he’s a candidate for decline (if not as much as the step back to Tejada).

Besides, the obvious reason for the Giants’ inevitable failure is the distraction of the Bonds trial.

Who the hell cares what the illegitimate son of Chip Carey and Joe Buck thinks? You know how many “experts” picked the Giants for fourth or fifth last year? Haven’t heard a retraction from any of them yet. They make their predictions and on the rare occasions they’re right, they go on a mountain top to yell “I told you so.” On the far more often occasions when they’re wrong, they don’t say a word, they just go on to make more predictions.

This is the sort of thing I've come to expect out of people associate with ESPN

So I’m pretty ‘meh’ about the whole thing. He’s clearly one of those writers who will either gloat about how right he was if the Giants don’t repeat, regardless of whether or not the reasons he gave that they won’t repeat are correct or not, or will completely forget that he wrote this article if they do (or if they say, get to the WS and then lose).

There’s no helping people like him.
