Hey, Grant...
Did you get asked to be part of Bill Simmons’ pop culture ESPN thingamabob?

ESPN is giving Simmons a new website for sports related pop culture stuff. He is hiring guest writers. I was just wondering if Grant was either interesed or had already been selected.

I don’t think my profile is high enough to be on Bill Simmons’s radar, so no. If their first hire is Chuck Klosterman, they’d have to dig pretty deep to get to me.

When I first moved to DC, the Washington Post had this columnist who was painfully unfunny; spent an entire football season expanding on a single lousy joke (a literal bandwagon); and whose schtick was “voice of the fan too lazy to bother finding out anything before expressing an opinion on it.” His use of language fell somewhere between trite and hackneyed. I quickly came the opinion that this was one of the worst writers I’d ever encountered (quite a feat since I’d spent so much of my younger years reading Glenn Dickey).
So I was quite surprised when, a year later, the local sports radio hired him to do a daily talk show. And oy vey! he was vastly worse in person, what with the whiny George Costanza voice, the going on for hours on end trying (and failing) to remember the names of actors in movies, the not knowing any pop culture that occured after 1978, and the outright insistence that total ignorance was the best platform from which to launch into any opinion. Good God! I thought, this guy’s so horrible as a radio show host it almost makes me long for the days when I was just assaulted by his writing.
It should be no surprise then, that a few years later, ESPN offered him half his own TV show and made him world famous. Ladies and gentleman I give you Tony Kornheiser, one of the greatest living examples of failing upwards that i’ve ever encountered.
The moral of this story is, of course, that this:
I can’t believe that hack is still so popular, his act is old and tired and his writing is unremarkable and predictable.
is of course a statement that answers its own question.

Pearlman
Pearlman wrote an artical recently about how he followed up with people who sent him nasty emails and they both basically wound up being teenagers who lived in their parents basement. It was this sanctimonious horse-shit about how people think they can say whatever they want about people they don’t know on the Internet with no repercussions, which is ironic, given all the shit Pearlman writes about people he doesn’t know.

i was pretty much the same way.
after Game 2 & through 8 innings of Game 3, NLDS, thought it was over. Romo had coughed it up, again, and I was so heartbroken. But they lived.
by the end of Game 6, NLCS, I was drained. I spent nearly the entire game with my heart racing

I turned off the TV when I saw the HR and just sat down
my dad called a little after saying “Did you see that?!” No, I replied, I couldn’t bear to watch. Well Ishikawa just drew a walk…
I turned it on in time to see the rest.
I didn’t even cheer when they tied the game in the 9th in ATL, before the Conrad moment.
I thought they were just setting us up for an even more heartbreaking bottom 9th or extra inning loss.

my thought process at the time was something like “Well, it was a good run, and besides they made it to the playoffs, which is all you can ask for. Just have to make it till the end of these contracts.”
After tying it, something along the lines of “Why do you struggle against fate!?”
After Conrad: “Good point.”

Impossible
They won the World Series, I can go the rest of my life watching a Pittsburgh Pirates type team and feel blessed. I doubted that this day would come and it has. I can now say Jose Oquendo instead of Jose Fucking Oquendo, I hold no ill will toward Salomon Torres or Scott Spiezio, don’t have any issues talking about just how slow JT Snow is and really don’t mind that Dusty gave him that game ball. They aren’t fond memories, but they no longer cause blood to shoot out of my eyes.

I know this is terrible but...
When Greenwald was talking about the the ball that hit Velez, I had to chuckle a little bit (hey, he’s still out there being… himself). I mean, Velez just reminds me of this cat, Sushi, I used to have that was crazy. For brief moments you’d just love her for being such a great cat, and then 95% of the time it was crazy and erratic and once got hit by a car by just running directly at it. She was fine, but it wouldn’t stop her from chasing cars like a dog in the future. She lived a long full insane life.

This very easily could be everyone coming into ST fat and hungover from ’10.
Panda could weigh 300 and still whiffing at last innings pitch.
DeRosa could have had his wrist fall off all together.
Timmy could be experimenting with some new delivery.
Franchez could be on the DL for the next 2 months.
Torres could be batting .111 and not Rowand.
The Giants could be making Arroyo look like Halliday.
Belt could look like Damon Minor.
None of this is happening. I am getting too bullish of a good feeling going, someone feed me some McC pessimism please.
I am sure I am being setup, someone talk me from the ledge.

The Giants GM is still Brian Sabean
You can only feel but so warm and fuzzy about that. Besides here’s your dose of daily pessimism.
Panda’s problems could have more to do with his swing than his weight and he could be feasting off ST fastballs.
DeRosa has played baseball unfettered in almost two years, and even if he is healthy he’s still Mark DeRosa and not Will Clark.
Timmy could be experimenting with a new drug.
Franchez is one slippery stair away from the DL, ditto for DeRosa.
Torres faded down the stretch and in spite of all he did last year there’s still some sort of competition for the opening day CF slot. Remember Torres played RF and Rowand-2 played CF in Game 5.
Bronson Arroyo is not a good pitcher and it’s ST, so he could have been working on his get it over fastball today.
Belt is fucking awesome, believe bitches. (Sorry, I’ve got no pessimism for you here.)
