Does Ryan belong on the prospect list still? And if he does, doesn’t he kinda belong higher than 30 with his AA/AAA wOBA above .375 and ability to back-up MI?

I think he's still eligible

And probably yes to your 2nd question. I actually wouldn’t have minded him as the starting SS instead of signing Tejada, although I can sort of see why that wasn’t an option.

I assumed he was not eligible for our lists. If he had been, I certainly would have campaigned for him in the mid-teens or so.

As far as I know he's still rookie eligible

Which I thought was the qualification for this list.

I guess everyone at MCC just kinda forgot about him.

I believe Rohlinger is not rookie eligible at this point. He’s under the Games played and AB limits for a rookie, but there’s also a service time codicil of the rookie qualifications — they can’t have been on the active roster during the period of 25 man limits (i.e., not counting September) for more than 45 days in previous seasons. I assume that this is cumulative (like all the other qualification limits) and if so, Rohlinger appears to have somewhere in the neighborhood of 52 days of major league service at this point which would put him over the edge.

My official rule is that when the team calls up a guy and my first thought is “Him again?” then he’s no longer rookie-eligible.

That said, I’m really hoping Rohlinger is the 24th or 25th man on the roster this year. I don’t believe they’re going to go into the season with Fontenot and DeRosa as their backup SS options, and if it comes down to Rohlinger vs. Burriss, he’s the clear winner to me. Heck if it comes down to Rohlinger vs. Nate, I think Ryan’s probably the winner for me.

You didn’t mention it specifically, but if it comes down to Rohlinger and Fontenot, I’d still pick Rohlinger.

I think at this point Fontenot is mostly insurance for Freddy Sanchez’ shoulder and DeRosa’s wrist. Were both of those not in doubt I’d bet they would have non-tendered him.

Even if he is still technically a rookie

Rohlinger has been up and down for three seasons and seems more like a veteran now, so I hope he isn’t put on this list if for no other reason than if eligible, he should rank much higher. Its almost not fair to include him as an “oh by the way, guess who we forgot about” vote competing against the unknowns that are left. Maybe at the end of the list, we can have a special “where would Rohlinger be” vote to see where he ranks.

Burkhart or Monell next. I was leaning Burkhart, but then I realized that Monell is Burkhart with four years of success behind him. A good year in AAA could give us our very own David Ross.

Completely agree with this

Although, to be fair, Monell has nowhere near the defensive reputation that Burkhart does. But he’s probably being underrated here.

Hector Sanchez: Underrated. Fighting body bias since the 2009 off season. I still love you, son, even if you're fat.

If Burkhart is the better receiver (and he certainly seems to be), I’d take him over Monell. His brief season at S-K was slightly better than Monell’s in 2008, though Monell was a year older at the time.

Monell’s yet another guy whose SJ stats look nice till you check out the K/W.

by Evan on Feb 9, 2011 2:01 PM PST up reply actions

Monell's season looks actually pretty similar to his 09 season

Except his SLG and K’s went up. I know Correlation != Causation, but I do wonder if he tried to sell out for more power which helped cause the increase in K’s

Not me

Burkhart is the better prospect. Three years younger, better defender, and equal batting average bat. I wouldn’t be shocked if he shares the San Jose job with either Sanchez or Joseph.

Concerns about Monell – Not added to the 40 man roster and he was not invited to major league spring training. His Winter stats were not good either. He is kind of getting the Brock Bond treatment from the Giants.

With all that said, Monell’s left handed power bat puts him close behind Burkhart on my list.

Going Monell again

He’s shown good OBP skills and has good game speed and I believe good D. He was the MVP of the DSL two years ago when he really did seem to walk off the island with a .466 OBP. His biggest problem is, of course, that he’s been quite old for his level the last couple years and will always be even if they move him straight to Augusta this year.

What about Justin Fitzgerald, Craig Westcott or Nick Liles? Curious as to what folks think about them as each of them put up decent numbers in the lower minors but I’ve never seen any scouting reports on them.

Westcott is the best of the 3 IMO

I think he could be added. As for scouting I’m not sure exactly what he throws.

He did get tatttood a bit in AA. Still getting to AA rotation in his first full year was quite an accomplishment, especially for someone who hasn’t pitched much. Fla-Giant seems to think his velocity is much higher than I’ve seen it reported elsewhere, so I’m not sure what the story is there. His K rate sure took a huge nosedive in the transition from short season ball to A+ and AA, though.

Liles would be interesting as a 2nd basemen

But even then, his hitting would still be a notch below Cavan, who has yet to make a poll.

At this point, I’m mostly just interested in the high-upside foreign signings: Leonardo Fuentes and Marvin Barrios. Maybe Armando Paniagua from the AZL or Ydwin Villegas from the SAL.

I'm generally with you

But I haven’t heard much about Armando Paniagua at all, so I’d like to get a scouting report before throwing him in the mix.

And Villegas had a TERRIBLE year. He’ll probably repeat Augusta, and I hope he rebounds, but… yeeesh…

Hector Sanchez: Underrated. Fighting body bias since the 2009 off season. I still love you, son, even if you're fat.

by tedfordfan on Feb 10, 2011 6:50 AM PST up reply actions

I did see a report that Paniagua was throwing 94-95 last year in the AZL. I think that came from Sickels, but I can’t put my finger on the right spot in my brain just right now.

Villegas was pretty awful last year. Probably will be starting in Augusta again this year. Still young though. A worse hitting Ehire? Let’s hope for a rebound. The organization likes him enough that they played him above minor Izturis when both were in the AZL and then promoted him to full season ball above Izturis as well, though Izturis has always been the better offensive player.

by Roger on Feb 10, 2011 7:42 AM PST up reply actions

I’ve heard that Villegas’ defense is good enough for him to stay at SS, but nowhere near Ehire’s. He’s going to have to develop a LOT at the plate. Worth keeping an eye on, though, because, as you say, he’s young.

Didn’t realize that Paniagua had such a good arm…

Hector Sanchez: Underrated. Fighting body bias since the 2009 off season. I still love you, son, even if you're fat.

by tedfordfan on Feb 10, 2011 7:58 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I didn’t mean to suggest that Villegas was regarded in any way similarly to Adrianza defensively. Just noting that at the moment he’s vastly inferior to Adrianza both offensively and defensively, which truly isn’t much of a prospect. Although at #31 not much of a prospect is pretty much what we’re looking at. I think the distinction at this level is between guys who aren’t much of a propsect and aren’t likely to change that perception next year (the Nick Liles sorts) and the guys who we think have a chance to take a developmental leap in the coming year. Villegas at least has the age going for him that you could sort of squint at him and see that. Same with some of the young arms.

Of course, saying all that I voted JCP, as in fact, I have for each of the last three spots.
