2011 Adoption Draft: Draft Order with a Poll
After some fine discussion in the last thread about rules and such, we have a draft order. Here's the formula I used to create draft points, based on a suggestion by Fla-Giant and nvsfg:
DP=#comments + (20*#months of membership) + (35*#fanposts/shots)
I probably made a few mistakes with length of membership and stuff, but to be honest I don't really care and I'm not going to go back and fix them. This is an adoption draft, after all.
Also, people who voluntarily threw their adopted Giant back were not compensated. Only those that were lost in FA or trade (like John Bowker or Matt Downs) were compensated with elevated draft position.
The question now is, when should we start this bad boy? As soon as possible? After ST so we can see who's making the roster, and we have somewhat of an idea as to where people will be starting out their seasons? That's where the poll comes into play. Vote below for your favorite option.
Oh, that's right. Here's the draft order:
- scout6
- cornball
- nvsfg
- rightcenterfielder
- quincy0191
- Little Napolean
- Desert Fox
- jcb9
- PiKAgiant
- Gobroks

Woohoo! The trade deadline is fast approaching. I’m now open to trade-up/trade-down offers for my #16 slot.

Oops. Looks like I got knocked back to #17 by the addition of cornball.
Looks like there are more and more members coming out of the woodwork wanting to join the draft now. This is probably another good reason to delay the start for at least a few more days. It would be nice to get everybody involved that want to participate – and I say this knowing that I could easily get knocked down a few more spots with more participants joining in.
BTW, where’s Roger? I’m real surprised that he’s not interested in this, given his level of interest in the prospects.

Ross on Halladay: "I’d tried everything against him…going the other way, taking pitches, trying to walk…and nothing worked. I’d never tried going up there and just trying to hit a home run off him."
I’ve been trying to think who you’re so excited to draft. Now that I’ve seen the list of available players, I’m guessing that it’s Cody Ross, although it could be Santiago Casilla. If you’re a prospect hound, then I’m guessing you like Gary Brown.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
Aside from already knowing who I want
It’s more the fact I was part of the draft last year slotted in the bottom of the draft. It took over a month to complete the draft. I want to get it rolling so people are not waiting forever to get their pick.
This is not really rocket science, it’s a fake adoption draft. I don’t think we need to put it off for the weekend to start it.

I think that we can start tomorrow. By that time all of the stragglers will have had enough time to chime in. A noon start might work best. I don’t think the process should take more than 2 weeks this year, don’t you think?

Fringy Prospect Here I Come!
Looking for someone toolsy at pick number 18, but if anyone wants to trade down in exchange for me rec’ing all of their posts for the entire year, let me know. Also, if someone wants to rec all of my posts I might be willing to trade down.

I’ll be taking the last of the fringy prospects one pick ahead of you at #17. Be prepared to be stuck with somebody no longer in baseball or no longer considered a prospect.

Are you trying to tell me that Thomas Neal won’t be available at #18? I’ll be adopting Will Clark anyway, I’m sure he’ll still be around.

I swear to god, if people start rec’ing someone’s posts for an entire year because of some lame pretend draft pick trade, I’m gonna start kicking some asses.
I USED TO NOT BELIEVE YOU
I tweet (more often than I blarg).
What exactly would be the benefits of trading down?
Other than thinking your guy won’t be drafted, what is the incentive? Is the other poster supposed to back you in arguments or something?
Waiting for the next adoption draft...my son was killed in a horrible FA transaction.
Ross on Halladay: "I’d tried everything against him…going the other way, taking pitches, trying to walk…and nothing worked. I’d never tried going up there and just trying to hit a home run off him."
Mostly just for the fun of it. I thought that trading would add a layer of intrugue and interest to something that is just a one-trick pony show. Trading for shadowy “future benefits” could lead to some funny exchanges down the road.
The other reason that I suggested it is that I could see that the guys that I most want to adopt could easily be gone by the time that I draft. I would be willing to trade down, at that point, with another member that really has their heart set on somebody that is still available.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
I suppose that’s all well and good, as long as lame post rec’s aren’t among the shadowy future benefits.
I USED TO NOT BELIEVE YOU
I tweet (more often than I blarg).
Nah, that was just a joke on my part – I was serious about the rugged good looks compliments though.

Don't go all bondslegend now
or do, that would actually be kind of funny. Maybe I will pick one random person and rec each and every one of their comments all season long just to see what happens.

Draft will be starting as soon as I can add the new people
I’m in class right now but I get out in an hour. I will add the new people as soon as possible and then we will get this show on the road. Full list of rules, links to Giants rosters, FO people, etc., will be included in the next fanpost.

One quick thought
When the actual draft happens, it needs to be kept extraneous comment-free. Simply, whose turn is up and that person’s pic. Otherwise, it’ll get out of control quickly.
The thong is, it happened.
I agree
but I’m not a moderator, so I’m not really sure how to enforce this.

In the interest of making things easier for all of the upcoming drafting members I compiled a list of available players.
I broke it up in several different levels, but mostly by the league the players last played in. Each separate category are listed in alphabetical order, with the prospects that I think are the most interesting listed with an asterisk after their names.

Jeremy Toole and Tyler Graham are interesting, but I have a feeling about Ryan Scoma.
Thing is, Scoma hasn’t been around that long and might come to naught.
I’m new to the MiLB thing and I don’t have much confidence;
Information is hard to come by.
Look out. I'm having a thought.
If I had to bet I would say that Graham is most likely to be the one to spend more than 2 seconds in the major leagues – probably not with the Giants. He has 2 tools (speed and defense) that are above-average at the major league level. Scoma and Toole both have a much harder road, and have been much more inconsistent. If I had to guess I would say that Toole has the better chance, since he can always slide into spot relief where his 1 above-average pitch (his FB) can be less exposed and there are always plenty of major league openings for.

Information is hard to come by.
Wait for the “Minor Lines” by Steve S. to start up here in April and you’ll get daily doses of info on our prospects. You can also do a search here on the MCC for the names that are of interest to you, to see what has been written about them in the past.
Also, check the blogs that are linked to on the left hand side of the MCC main page. Several of them have occasional info on the minor league prospects. Dr. B who writes the “When the Giants Come to Town” blog did a whole series of the top 70 or so prospects on his blog over the past seveal weeks. He has a lot of info to read.

Sorry, I’ll be away from my PC for about 4 hours, so I don’t have any more time right now to do the trade-down thing. I will conitnue to be open to trade proposals in the coming days to anybody that doesn’t like their available draft choices and would like to take Dunning from me. It would likely involve a draft-and-trade deal where I would instruct you on who I wanted you to draft and then we would trade our draftees with you ending up as Dunning’s proud parent. Just post your proposal below.
