2011 Adoption Draft: Rules Thread
Here's the thread where we debate rules and draft order and such. As stated before, I am relatively new here so I'm going to open this up to the more experienced members. As far as draft order, I figure that everyone will get some sort of point value based on number of comments, number of FanPosts/Shots, and time since joining. Then the people who lost their son in a trade or FA transaction will go first, followed by those of us who haven't drafted before. Anyway, let's debate some operational details before we get this thing going.
This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

Re: people who take too long to draft
The secondary draft system that was used last year seems to work well enough. If someone takes too long to draft, they get thrown in a secondary drafting pool, and they can draft whenever they log back in, but they get skipped and we move on to the next drafter.

I think number of comments would probably be the easiest., and take less time to run.
However, if your kid was lost in a trade, you should have first dibs on the player brought back.
If you lost a kid to FA or DFA, then maybe you should have a higher priority as well.
Keep the secondary draft. Probably 3 people on the clock at once with the higher seeded person having priority should they draft the same person and the same time.
Waiting for the next adoption draft...my son was killed in a horrible FA transaction.

what if your son has fallen off the face of the planet? DAMMIT BROCK
Whatever happened to Brock Bond, with his .311 BA? Oh well, sigh, always goin to be my adoptive son!
11/1/2010 if you dont know what occurred on that date, we got issues.
You could toss him back in the pool
force him to swim.

He's in Fresno i thought... and i just did throw him back out in the pool scout

All of the rosters have yet to be set, as a large percentage of the prospects will have their assignments set based on what happens during Spring Training.
Bond will almost certainly be in Fresno – if he’s not traded. He only went to Richmond at the end of last season to shore up their injury-depleted lineup.

I agree with you on the compensation for adoptees lost to trades, FA and release. I also agree that members that draft too slowly should continue to fall until they get back on the clock (just like in the NFL draft).
However, I don’t agree with this:
I think number of comments would probably be the easiest., and take less time to run.
Isn’t the info on the length of membership and number of fanposts/fanshots kept in the same place as where you find the number of a member’s comments? If so, it should be just as easy to agree on a formula to come up with a fair way to score a member’s ranking.
I would multiply the length of membership by something around 250 and the number of fanposts/fanshots by around 100, but others may want different multipliers.
My suggested formula would be:
DP = NOC + (250 x LOM) + (100 x NOF)
Where
DP = Draft Points
NOC = Number of Comments
LOM = Length of Membership (in years)
NOF = Number of Fanposts & Fanshots
One final suggestion. We should allow the trading of draft picks – before, during and after the draft. This would make it much more exciting, along the lines of the first round of the NFL draft. “Futrue considerations” could get pretty interesting as the season heats up.

Probably way too complicated
But I fully support this system if for no other reason than complexity. Also, posting “139” or “STFD” one thousand times doesn’t bring nearly as much to the table and the discussion as fanposts and fanshots do.

Just to clarify
I would take the LOM number out to the 2nd decimal point. So, if you’ve got 2 years and 4 months of membership then your LOM number would be 2.33

I was just going
to use months of membership, and multiply by a smaller coefficient (20, I’m thinking)

I threw him back because
I didn’t feel I was giving him enough attention. I felt he could go to a better home
So I'm thinking
I’m just going to do number of comments. I know it might not be fair to people who have been around a while and simply don’t post often, but to be honest I just don’t really have to time to figure out some advanced metric that might, at most, make a small difference on drafting order. I’ll work on the order now and hope to get some sort of FanPost up later today.
Note: people who lost their Giant in a FA transaction or trade will still get to go first.

Unless someone is going to do the work for you, just use the number of comments. You’re right that the number of people adversely affected is going to be small (although they will definitely whine the loudest).

This,
Some of the ideas sound like they would take a lot of work.
There are a lot of members on this site and that is A LOT of number crunching.
Waiting for the next adoption draft...my son was killed in a horrible FA transaction.
Ross on Halladay: "I’d tried everything against him…going the other way, taking pitches, trying to walk…and nothing worked. I’d never tried going up there and just trying to hit a home run off him."
In the interest of keeping everybody happy
Here’s what I have come up with,.
Draft points = #comments + (20 * # of months of membership) + (25 * # of FanPosts/Shots)
It still weights comments the heaviest (especially for those that comment a lot) but also gives membership time and FanPosts/Shots fair consideration as well.
Before we move on, is this acceptable to everyone?
San Francisco Giants: 2010 World Series Champions
Buster Posey: 100% ballplayer, 0% bullshit
It's acceptable
I still think it’s too heavily weighted towards comments, as previously mentioned those who spend lots of time in gameday threads posting “STFD” and “Great Scott” ten katrillion times come out way ahead, but this will probably work and we’re probably spending way, way, way too much time trying to figure this out instead of just drafting.
Also, would it be possible for me to make a deal to draft Thomas Neal?

See my comment above. Just do number of comments and be done with it. You’re already spending enough (much appreciated) time to get this done – don’t spend a disproportionate amount of time using a formula for what is really just a fun thing to do.

What's the hurry?
I didn’t follow the draft last year – did it take a long time to complete? The reason I ask is that I think there should be no huge hurry in starting the draft right away. I mean, people’s views of the pool of talent will almost certainly change based on what happens in the next 4 weeks of ST. Also, I think that there will be at least 2 players that will no longer be with the Giants 4 or 5 weeks from now (Ishikawa and Rowand are the likeliest candidates). Even if you don’t agree with that assumption, almost ever year there is a couple of trades and releases around the end of ST and the first week of the regular season. Since the vast majority of the eligible draftees will be minor leaguers, I would prefer to hold off on the draft for at least a few more weeks.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
It took about a month. There are fewer users drafting this year though, so it shouldn’t take as long.
We can hold off on doing the draft if we want to see who makes the roster (who’s drafting Marc Kroon, I wonder) if that’s what we want to do.

Wow, that was a long draft. There’s not as many players available this year, so it shouldn’t take as long, right?
Maybe you should put up a poll with options on when to start the draft? You could start with this weekend and set the other options 5-7 days apart.

I want to 2nd the notion of being able to officially trade draft picks and adoptees. Just think of all of the possibilties. I would seriously consider trading down with somebody if they agree to rec all of my posts for a full year – and comment at least once a day on my brilliance, witty writing style and rugged good looks.

I’ll take that deal, although, I’d also like at least one rec a week in return.

Dude, the amount of time that I’ve spent thinking about and posting on this is miniscule. You’ve spent as much time as I have with all of your responses to my, and other people’s, posts.
As for the importance that I place on the draft order, I really don’t care about it at all. I’m a process guy though, and I believe that if you do something then you should do it right. Other members have posted that they don’t think a comments only ranking is fair, and I agree with that. It took me all of 10 seconds to think up a different formula, and another minute to type it up. It was an easy to implement change, as the OP has stated that he’s already calculated all of the revised rankings in a brief amount of time after posting the formula.

you are going to be doing a lot of number crunching. If you want to do that, hat’s off to you, but that seems like a lot of work for a fake adoption thread.
