How can we not think we're better after what we went through last year? Not only from a health standpoint, but also from a runs-scored standpoint. The law of averages would tell you we're going to be better in both areas. But you still have to play the game.

I don't think he's saying that we will be healthier than average
But yeah, while injuries can beget injuries, it seems really unlikely we’ll have as many injuries this year as last year.
Seth Rosin can hit the side of a barn with a baseball. From space.
Giants baseball: We're stupid enough to WIN that (TM)
Yeah, but they didn’t fall on their faces last year because of Nate’s shin or Zito (who I can certainly foresee more phantom DL stints for) or Sanchez legs. It was the injury to Buster that killed them (to a lesser degree Beltran as well) and his injury was so traumatic that I don’t we can take it on faith that he’ll fully recover, or whether he’ll be a Mauer-esque revolving door on the DL. And of course, Freddy Sanchez I’m just assuming won’t make it thru the year.
anyway, all it takes is one major injury to one of the big three SP to do the same amount of traumatic damage to the team’s chances and that’s always a whisper away.

Dude is looking pretty good. He’s playing golf and stuff. Whether it gives him lingering pain, discomfort, or screws his mechanics up in a way that causes him to overcompensate and create more injury is yet to be seen.
But remember that the meltdown really happened in August when EVERYBODY went down in that game against the Braves. The Giants were a fantastic team with Posey and Panda. After Posey they were still pretty good, although significantly weaker. When they lost Nate, Romo, Wilson, Sanchez, Fontey, and another guy all at the same time, that was pretty crippling.
While Sabean’s logic isn’t particularly comforting, it is pretty unlikely that we would have a repeat of 2011 where all but one of our starting position players spent significant time on the DL, and a total of 23 or so guys spent at least 14 days on the DL. It’s absolutely possible though, but not especially likely.
And of course, if we were to lose any one of the Core 5 for the season—Timmy/Cain/MadBum/Posey/Panda—it would be devastating. That said, we could lose one and probably still be in the hunt for the WC as we were last year without Posey.
Meanwhile, if we all five play like franchise cornerstones, everybody else could be pretty meh-to-terrible and the team would probably make the playoffs easily.
Bah.
The meltdown might have happened in August, but they were out-performing their Pythag. all year. The fact that they were still in first place in August was all-but illusion.
Given some health we will be a little bit better. We could have been a lot better though if we actually upgraded positions of futility, like SS. A shortstop that could be a passable leadoff hitter and a 5th starter would have upgraded the roster as it stood. Now I’m going to start my pre- season delusions where I convince my self that we have the best team in baseball, Mom always said I had imagination.
