Would you trade Zito for Burnett?

Barry Zito Contract:

$19 million 2012

$20 million 2013

AJ Burnett Contract:

$16.5 million 2012

$16.5 million 2013

So we would save $2.5 million this year, and 3.5 million next year, also the Yankees are trying to move AJ, so they're willing to throw in $8 million to do it... Probably not if we return Zito though.

Pros of AJ:

Doesn't get injured often

High Strikeout rate

Cons:

He sucks as of late... could pick it up in a return to the NL

I for one would like to see this because I've given up on Zito, the Yankees love lefties and Burnett has worn out his stay there as well.

we wouldn’t save money, but yes I would do this simply because Burnett’s upside is higher.

and the Yankees would rent out Zito to do pizza commercials? And that would make him valuable?

Psh.

If the Giants were interested in saving money, they would be doing things this offseason that actually save money.

Once more, coming to you by proxy.

Yes I would

Plus no buy-out for Burnett in 2014 like what Zito has

Don't think he can cut it in the bigs? Brock Bond will be the bigger man and walk walk walk away.

Duh, but why in the HELL would the Yankees want a worse pitcher than they already have? Can you imagine the Red Sox lineup against Zito in either Yankee Stadium or Fenway? HR Derby

Straight up?

I wouldn’t trade him for Alex Rodriguez, Jayson Werth, Joe Mauer, Ryan Howard, and TBH, probably not Albert Pujols. Carl Crawford’s on the fence too – I really like him and I think he’ll bounce back, but he got a LOT of money and 2011 was not encouraging.

Let's see...

Zeets is looking to be paid $46MM over the next 2 years. Let’s assume he accrues 1 WAR per year at $5MM/WAR. That means the net loss is ~$36MM.

Do you think all those people above will underperform their remaining contracts by $36MM?

by Nivra on Dec 11, 2011 9:29 AM PST up reply actions

Yes

Werth’s already looking like a bust; he actually outperformed his 2011 salary by $1.4M, but he only got paid $10M. When he hits years 4-7 of that deal and is being paid $20M+ for his 35+ seasons, I expect him to easily lose $36M.

Pujols’ deal is so big he can still be worth $20M+ a year and lose $50M.

Rodriguez produced $1M more than his deal in 2008 – since then, he’s underperformed by $10M+ annually. His deal is actually front-loaded so it gets better over time, but he’s still locked up through 2017 at $20M+ per season, and I doubt he gets better (which he would have to in order to even produce $20M of value as he hasn’t done that since 2008).

Mauer can’t stay on the field and he’s making $23M annually until 2018. Last year, the first year of his huge deal, he got paid the same amount for $8M worth of production. He has outperformed that salary a few times, but I’m not betting on a catcher who spent a lot of time hurt last year and wasn’t great when he was on the field.

Crawford is less certain as I do think he’s a very good player and he’s still quite young with a good injury history, but he is getting paid $20M a season until 2017, and was worth $0.9M last year. Not to mention he’s only exceeded that $20M mark twice in his career (2009 and 2010).

So yes, I do think those players will all underperform their contracts to the degree Zito is “better” than them. But it’s not just that – getting Zito’s salary off the books in two years is better than trading it for a contract that isn’t up for six years, particularly for players who are already showing signs of decline.

If the Yankees were dumb enough yes.

But there is no reason they would.

There is nothing wrong with me cheering for players that are former players for my teams. Unless they become a Viking.

It must be something in the water

My boss’s husband is a Yankees fan. He offered me Burnett for Zito straight up the other day. He thinks both would benefit from a change of scenery.

Mind you, my boss’s husband is not Brian Cashman.

I revised a line from a Yankees fan who commented here about JSanchez. We just got rid of left-handed AJ Burnett. Why would we want the original?

Seriously … the Giants’ self-imposed salary cap cannot accommodate a Hobbit and a Three-Toed Sloth. We are forced to choose.

In that depressing context, $2.5 million in 2012 and $3.5 million in 2013 = savings. And no $7 million buyout in 2014!

No. Trade. Clause!

Not to mention the Giants owe Zito $7 million to go away in 2014

Yes

Would trade Zito for probably 99% of people that played in MLB in 2011.
