I guess
But it’s not like it’s just one metric that has him as a once-in-a-generation defender. Every single one I can find, including the useful “aggregate defensive metrics” on fangraphs which smushes all the different ones together, thinks that Utley is routinely a +10 defender, year after year, which is just bonkers.
So yeah, I guess if you think every single metric is wrong. But every metric publicly available has him as the best around.

But an eye’s an eye. It’s also important to remember that Japan is currently in something of a modern deadball era, so anyone who’s hitting well is doing it against a backdrop of league offense over there being very depressed. I don’t think teams know whether they’ve won or not until the whole process is over. So it looks like the Giants submitted a bid, and while they were waiting, they talked with Hairston and Gonzalez.

Thinking about money
The Twins signed Tsuyoshi Nishioka, who was 26 and coming off a career year, to a 3 year/9 million dollar deal after paying a 5 million dollar posting fee, which essentially made it a 3 year 14 million dollar deal for the Twins.

Whereas Nakajim has played since 2004 with much more consistent success than Nishioka ever had.

There are alot less of them, but I’m not sure how underrepresented they are. Now that Santo is in, it’s hard to figure out who else you could make a case for who was really a 3B. Nettles maybe. But most of the guys who are high up on the 3b career WAR lists played significant to major parts of their career at other positions (Evans, Allen, Perez) Buddy Bell and Ken Boyer aren’t good enough.
Chipper will almost certainly go in and he’s played the majority of his career at 3B. Rolen I think probably should but won’t. But after those guys, it’s pretty hard to figure out who you could stick in there who isn’t already there from the career 3B).

So given the the rumors, what are your expected outcomes for the Giants offseason
Yes or No to the following:
Beltran
Lincecum to a longterm deal
Lincecum to a 1-2 year deal
Cain to a longterm deal
Hairston
Alex Gonzalez
Affeldt traded
I’ll go first.
Beltran: No
Lincecum to a longterm deal: No
Lincecum to a 1-2 year deal: Yes
Cain to a longterm deal: Yes
Hairston: No
Alex Gonzalez: Yes
Affeldt traded: No
I think in the end Sabean overvalues Affeldt and no deal gets done. They clearly need a shortstop so I think Alex Gonzalez becomes the third straight stop gap vet at that position in as many years. Sabean wont go 8 like Tim wants and he’ll end up settling for something that keeps them out of arbitration just like they did two years ago. And there’s no way in hell they get Beltran.

I've thought about this. Here's what I've concluded.
We see: a guy who led the team offensively when he was playing.
Others see: a guy who missed a month after being traded and isn’t a 1.000 OPS type hitter and is average defensively.
He’s also, what, 36?

It’s probably also true that teams are turned off by the prospect of paying for someone who could rapidly decline because of age or become useless because of injury.
It’s probably understood by interested teams that he wants more than they are willing to offer and they are going after other players instead. For example, the Red Sox have Willingham near the top of their list.

This is why I don't care about college football
“I think the BCS is just a mess,” said George Wine, 80, who retired as sports information director at Iowa in 1996 and still writes stories for the Hawkeyes’ official site. “I think college football is crying for a playoff system. This voting is highly subjective. I realize that voting is subjective and often arbitrary. I probably don’t do as much research … but who the hell knows whether Oregon is better than Wisconsin?”

"Stern’s analysis was clearly right," said Bill James, the baseball statistics maven whose work was highlighted in the book and movie "Moneyball" and backs Stern’s call for a BCS boycott. "This isn’t a sincere effort to use math to find an answer at all. It’s clearly an effort to use math as a cover for whatever you want to do.

I thought that was a lame article because it starts with this:
Understand this, though: No matter what it says, the BCS is not a system designed to choose a championship matchup. It is merely a tool to stave off the inevitable playoff bowl directors fear will cut into their millions in tax-free profits, a casino-style distraction to placate the masses.
And then spends exactly zero more sentences talking about the alarming part of that sentence. The whole thing is about how it’s weird to have computers vote and shit.

that’s what part of it was. That the schools could make way more money the bowl director people apparently get huge salaries – year round- for doing the bowl thing.

Use the Fiesta and Sugar to play off into the NC. Make the Sugar between LSU and Stanford and the Fiesta between OSU and Bama. Or keep it a bit more regional and keep the Fiesta as is an dhave them play the winner of the Sugar (Bama or LSU).

I think they are actually very well positioned to go make the change I outlined.
It would eliminate two BCS births, but if they combined that with ridding the all conferences of AQ status and just taking the top 8 teams in the BCS equation regardless of conference, they could definitely pass it off as “more fair” and maybe even, just plain old “fair.” They wouldn’t have to change any dates since the NC game already plays a week or more after the other BCS bowls.

But for that much
they are expecting more. I know he is a very good player, and would love to see him here, but if the injuries persist can they justify that contract?

That was actually a reference to the fangraph defense of the signing.
BTW: I have turned 180 and am now all for the move since I learned that Cowherd hates the signing.

This is pretty good
If Nix is the last offensive piece the Phillies plan on adding outside of short stop, it will have been a puzzling offseason. In Ruben Amaro Jr.’s end-of-the-season press conference, he expressed a desire to put together better at-bats, particularly with two strikes. But the three hitters the Phillies have added are all the opposite kind of hitter: Wigginton is a career .185 two-strike hitter; Thome is a career .172 two-strike hitter. And Nix is a career .141 two-strike hitter. Rather than pursuing the type of veteran contact hitters that gave them fits against the Cardinals, the Phillies have added two swing-and-miss power hitters to go with a power-hitting utility man in decline. None will provide much in the way of options if Mayberry ends up struggling in an everyday role.

Phillies’ fans seem to think that RAJ is operating under the belief that if he spends…spends…spends…the team will always contend and if the team always contends they’ll have the money to spend…spend…spend… but he’s made such bad decisions they’re comparing it to a tech stock in the late ’90’s.

Lowrie's a bit of an odd case
Because they don’t really need him for anything, and he’s always hurt, so teams don’t seem to have a high impression of his value. I agree that he couldn’t be gotten for RamRam or Affeldt alone, but I think a relief-centered package might work. It would likely have to include one of our better prospects, though.

Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post reports that the Phillies are "strong players" for free agent third baseman Aramis Ramirez. Meanwhile, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com confirms that the Phils do indeed have interest.
The most likely scenario is that the Phillies envision Ramirez as a fallback option for their lineup if they are unable to retain free agent shortstop Jimmy Rollins. They can’t possibly afford both, right? Buster Olney of ESPN.com wrote earlier this morning that it appears the Phils’ biggest competition for Rollins may come from the Brewers or Cardinals, though his colleague Jerry Crasnick hears that St. Louis doesn’t plan to pursue him even if they are unable to re-sign Albert Pujols.

In a sign of dire economic times across the pond, Buckingham Palace is now doing some budget busting, with the queen herself due for a pay freeze and Prince Charles set to foot the bill for some major expenses.
