PrintThe Padres have improved their offense more than the Giants did this winter. Sweet. The worst part is that it makes no sense, especially after trading away Mat Latos.
The San Diego Padres today announced they have acquired outfielder Carlos Quentin from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for right-handed pitcher Simon Castro and left-handed pitcher Pedro Hernandez.
Castro was one of Baseball America's top-100 prospects before the season. Hernandez had a pretty nice season across three levels. Quentin is a free agent after this season.
What a weird deal for the Padres to make.

I wouldn't have called them mediocre.
Perhaps mediocre for a playoff team, but they were at least average for the league… Though there was the whole part where Torres, Burrell, and Ross weren’t starters at the beginning of the year. And the part where they played Jose Guillen in right field for the better part of two months.

Yeah, but it’s more qualitative than “average for the league”/“league-average”, and generally a pejorative.

When I learned it by inference, I learned it as having a negative slant.
I checked a definition a few years ago, which has led me to think of it as essentially a synonym for average, as you do. I still do so.
I think the two are not mutually exclusive; typically, the context in which one describes something as average will be slightly negative. We always hope to be above average rather than lumped in with the crowd, and don’t usually find objects that are simply average pleasing.
That may account for the generally negative connotation.
But it sounds like “meaty ochre”.

I’d argue that collection of hitters was better than league-average overall at the end of 2010.
Don't think he can cut it in the bigs? Brock Bond will be the bigger man and walk walk walk away.
The numbers put them at about league average for the season, and they were probably hitting better than that during their playoff run, yes. I see that more as a reflection of Sabean’s ability to maneuver mid-season (though he is not without his major flops, of course).
The start of the season looked like this:
CF – Rowand
SS – Renteria
1B – Huff
3B – Sandoval
C – Molina
LF – DeRosa
2B – Uribe
RF – Bowker/Schierholtz

The thing is I remember the 2010 season. The Giants weren’t that good, for much of the season. May of 2010 spawned the despair that led to the StarWars live-blog…. It led to “Bye-Bye Bochy” The pitching just happened to get HOT in September and they rode the tide through the post season.
Oh it was fun, it was the bestest ever, but it didn’t delude me into thinking that was the formula for repeated success.

The problem with shipping Quentin at the deadline is the same problem the A's had with dealing Holliday
Aome teams are going to look at your hitter suddenly struggling in your massive pitchers’ park and think “he’s damaged goods,” while others are going to thing, “it’s probably the park, but just in case, I’m not going to offer much,” and the rest are going to think, “he’s better than his numbers, so we can buy low here and try to get him on the cheap.”

Are they a small payroll team or not? Trading for a guy who’s going to be making over $5 million next season? And a FA after the season?
Only logical thing that makes sense is they think he’ll be a hot commodity at the trading deadline. He’s a typical high power, high K/BB slugging outfielder who sucks at defense.

It’s on the sidebar; Don Mueller has died. He was injured sliding into third base right before Bobby Thomson’s home run on the last day of the 1951 season. He went to spring training with San Francisco in 1958, but then he got sent to the White Sox that March. SABR has a nice biography.

Seems like a good trade for the Padres
Yeah, Quentin is injury-prone and not that great. Yes, he’s terrible on defense. But they really gave up almost nothing to get him. I mean, this trade really seems like it was basically free for the Padres. They gave up two marginal pitching prospects for 29-year-old outfielder who has a chance at being a decent hitter. I have to assume that they realized that they were giving up almost nothing and said “Go for it” despite the slightly-nonsensical nature of the deal & Quentin’s flaws as a player.

They’ve improved by acquiring Quentin, but have you checked out the BABIPs of the position players who ranked #2, #3, and #4 by fWAR last year? Hundley (catcher): .362. Headley: .368. Guzman: .360. There’s really no reason to expect that they’ll sustain those rates. Rizzo might improve, but if they’re going to give Guzman time, they’d have to put him in the OF.
We’re getting a major contributor back (Posey), a solid contributor relative to the dreck we’d throw out there (Sanchez), and something in between a deadcat bounce and decent production (Huff). I could be wrong, but I don’t recall the Padres suffering any such catastrophic injuries/letdowns last year.

When I saw this, I thought that the 800 runs number was obviously hyperbole, because teams don’t score 800 runs. Then I saw that the Red Sox scored 875. What the fuck?

I don’t think so – UCLA had to get a special exemption from the NCAA to play in a bowl with a losing record, and from a quick Google/Wikipedia search, they’re the only team with a losing record to go to a bowl game.

trying to figure out what meds the Padres front office is on, the only thing that matters is that the Padres now have a better offense than the Giants do. They got a damn good offensive player in his FA year for damn near nothing.
Quentin and Maybin, with the rest of their offense and residual pitching isn’t a bad team. And a Quentin/Pagan/Cabrera outfield beats a Cabrera/Pagan/Nate outfield any day of the week.

I was out of town, so I missed that game live, but had it on my DVR. What I’d read mirrors what you say, but when I watched it a week later, I was surprised at how really close the game was. One call, and it could have gone the Niners way.

It is certainly possible that the Niners could have won that game, but it was kind of a 50/50 proposition at best. The games against Dallas and Arizona, though, are games they arguably should have won. In both instances, they failed to slam the door and got burned by a .500 team.

Huff is often cited, but with the tenor, it seems, that he’s an exception to the rule.
One thing this discussion is making me think about is Melky’s shrinking walk rate, and whether it will go back up when his BABIP inevitably regreses, or whether it will stay Rowand-esque even when he goes back to hitting .270 or .280.

His walk rate has dipped to around 60% of his career average, which is really quite low, so yes, I’d expect it to perk up to some degree.
His O-Swings sharply increased the last two years, so he’s swinging at bad pitches more often, and he’ll really need to stop doing that so often if he wants to weather that BABIP regression.
If he keeps his fitness up, his BABIP talent-level is likely higher with speed, but not as much as last year’s improvement.
So would it be fair to speculate that the two movements are likely to cancel each other out and leave him around league average OBP?

So it would be very fair to see that OBP not moving very far, though theoretically the component parts could move around and even switch completely.

First of all, I’ve been on MCC longer than you, and I am by no means a Sabean or Bochy apologist. I do, however, believe in evidence, which you have yet to provide.
You have been saying that the Giants really should be spending more money. They increased the payroll from $100 million to $120 in 2011. Then, they increased it to $130 million for 2012. You say that they should have more money, yet provide no proof for that assumption. If the Giants are being run like a business, the front office likely believes that massive payroll increases year-to-year are rather unsustainable. If they say $130 million is the top of the budget, then who are we to argue with that? We do not have access to their books.

Well, your comments about SFGate were way off base.
Aaron Rowand is part of the payroll. I don’t think Bonds is any more, but I’m not a hundred percent sure. One way or another, $130 million is the complete number.
Beltran could have been re-signed without increasing the payroll. Like I said, the problem is not whether they have more money, because all indicators point to the fact that they don’t, but how they spend the money they actually have. Re-signing Beltran would have been good. Ross is not much better than Schierholtz, and Nate, Belt, Pagan, Cabrera, and Huff will all be getting ABs in the outfield. On a limited budget, the resources are best allocated elsewhere.

I think it’s fair to say that it was worth many millions more than the previous one, but since they don’t disclose the terms, we have no idea by how much. They raised ticket prices by about 10%, and then sold out every game. And they have, obviously, substantially increased merch sales.

I've looked at it before
I put some faith in it, since I do believe they’re doing their best. But frankly they’ve not got access to the information they would need to calculate that stuff. AFAIK they don’t know the terms of the TV contract, they don’t know how much the team’s getting for luxury boxes, they don’t know the terms of the various sponsorship deals, and they don’t know how much the team is making from its 25% stake in CSNBA (and it’s not clear that there’s even an estimate of that revenue included in “operating income”). To my knowledge the team does not make any of that information public, and even if they did it’s not audited.
In short, we’re talking about a situation where no outsider could ever know how much money they’re making, but the club’s officials have every incentive to lie and claim poverty and no chance whatever of being caught in said lies. My experience is that people who have an incentive to lie and know that they will never be caught for lying will almost certainly lie.
There's also the problem of their ownership structure
If there were one clear owner calling the shots, then he/she might be more willing to forgo a profit. But the more owners, and the more of them who aren’t billionaires with FU money^5, the more voices there are going to be arguing for a larger profit margin.
Depending on how their ownership agreement is written, a few recalcitrant minority holders (or even one) might be in a position to put the kibosh on any deficit spending.

I can’t blame most of the league for not wanting to give a multi-year contract; sentimentality issues aside, I might actually prefer Melky over Cody, if only because of the age issue. Neither should be playing CF at this point, and doesn’t really hit enough to be a desirable corner outfielder.

There’s only really two other teams in the AFC who are really good and that’s the Steelers and Ravens- The Pats didn’t have much competition. The Saints and Packers had tough games in their own division

Well, it seems like the injury bug bit a lot of teams this year – possibly as a consequence of the lockout – but yeah, dregarx is right that parity is out of whack in the NFL.

That too, but what I initially meant was that the teams themselves are imbalanced.
Brady and Brees posting record passing yards, but the Patriots have a ridiculous defense, and several teams (9ers and Ravens/Steelers to some degree but especially the Broncos and Bengals) appear to be nothing but defense.

Tebow has been so talked to death and over-analyzed by this point, we’ve all had a chance to see his (lack of) football skills in action. He had one play today where he got, like, seven seconds in the pocket without a Chief within five yards of him, and he still missed his target by a mile. From a pride perspective, the Steelers have a lot more to lose than the Broncos.
The only people still pretending that Tebow’s victories are Gifts from On High are people who don’t actually watch football. And I couldn’t care less about their blatantly uninformed yammering.

Well, you replied to me, and the point stands.
As for the Inside the Clubhouse quote, his answer was in response to a fan question as to why we didn’t get a big bat. The answer, in short, was “we’re spending as much as is feasible for running a business.”
We’re speculating on what things we can actually assess. I’m not really interested in a tinfoil hat routine, and until I see anything to corroborate the notion that there is money to spend other than emphasizing different shades of “allegedly” in various quotes, they will remain innocent until proven guilty.

Long term or short term, it’s all spending. Money spent is money spent. Now, that money is in effect invested, but with ticket sales maxed out it’s not hard to imagine that the payroll cannot continue to expand at its current rate.

It's not the sailors who claim so
It’s Goslings, who have, rather obnoxiously, trademarked the drink. The bright bulbs in the government who allowed this to happen are of course “really” to blame, but even in business the fact that you can get away with something doesn’t make it morally acceptable to do so.
For some reason in terms of liquor this sort of IP assholery has clustered in the rum space. Because of this I recommend that people not buy Goslings and especially not Pusser’s. This is made easier by the fact that Pusser’s is nasty.

I used to do anything that was broadcast OTA, too.
But I haven’t bothered to setup all the software to do that since I moved. I only have qualms when it comes to movies, music and pay cable (if I am not already paying for the channel, anyway). With On Demand and streaming, I am not as desperate for content I miss because of a wonky DVR or because I just didn’t bother with it the first time as I used to be. We live in great times!
