There are “roughly six teams that have shown consistent interest” in Wei-Yin Chen, reports Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun. The Orioles are one, the Pirates presumably still another, and the other four are yet unknown.

that pitchers pitch to their defense.

FIP only account for Ks, BB, and homeruns. That’s it. I know the idea is that those are the only stats that pitchers directly control but ignores situational pitching and defense.

It goes back to the Crash Davis speech

about strikeouts being undemocratic.

Double plays are probably the primary example. Pitchers do pitch to get DPs especially if they are not strikeout pitchers.

Pitchers would avoid certain pitches and location depending on situations, like man on third with one out.

Which is why speckops and I are confused as to why you want to see them included in a metric that is supposed to tell you how well a pitcher pitched.

by GuyWhiteyCorngood on Dec 30, 2011 11:29 AM PST up reply actions

Because

a pitcher knows 1) how good his defense is and 2) who is a good field behind him and who is not.

Now, a stud pitcher doesn’t have to worry about that as much because he can strike guys out (and thus negate the defense). However, a non-strikeout pitcher will to his defense and defensive positioning. How many times does Kruk talk about pitching location to negate a batter’s strengths?

On top of that you have situational pitching in which pitcher intentionally attempts to create a result.

I'm not really buying it

If the third baseman’s a bad fielder, will the pitcher try to work all LHHs inside to avoid having the ball hit that way? Doesn’t seem likely to lead to happy results.

Similarly with trying to get a double play; a hard-hit ground ball is not something a pitcher should really ever be trying to induce, even if he could.

I guess I would agree that sometimes guys are “pitching for the strikeout,” but strikeout pitchers are already doing so, and non-strikeout pitchers are unlikely to succeed.

The site I'm talking about

was actually designed for atheists/agnostics to discuss the world with believers. It mostly works because there is one Christian pastor who started it who is very skilled at keeping people on message and not getting flame-y. He’s a very good debater who is well respected by the atheists as well as the believers.

He went away for a while and the place degenerated into an epic flamewar. Most epic I’ve ever seen, actually.

My reasoning

1) Most position players are average fielders. Some are excellent while others are awful but I don’t need a quantifying stat to tell me that. I do use dWAR for a career but don’t care to use it on a single season basis.

2) As for the pitchers, there is some connection between how a pitcher pitches and his defense. Pitchers do pitch to their parks and their defense and defensive positioning matters. Also, I believe that defensive matrix for an entire team is more reliable for that for one player.

My comment was sarcastic. Run support can be wildly different, even after a full season, for 2 pitchers on the same team. Fangraphs chooses to not include defense into because it allows you to make a mental adjustment if you fell necessary, instead of giving you a number that has been adjusted, but you don’t know how much, and that adjustment could be horribly wrong.

Not sure how exactly ESPN calculates their run support, but look at this for 2011

Bumgarner 5.32
Lincecum 3.82

If defense saved 1.5 runs per game more for Bumgarner than it did for Lincecum over a season, don’t you think that would have a large effect on ERA?

My problem with this is that you’ve just said that single season defensive metrics are near useless. What happens when you try to divide that into an eighth of a season? It becomes even more useless.

by speckops on Dec 30, 2011 11:29 AM PST up reply actions

single season defensive metrics are useless because they are not true gauges of a player’s defensive talent.

However, that’s not a concern with respect to pitching stats. I don’t care if the Giants are actually a good defensive team. Just whether they were good behind a particular pitcher on the days he pitched. Maybe the team plays great defense behind only one pitcher on a team and that pitcher benefits greatly while the other pitchers don’t get that same defense.

You need to account for that somehow.

How does it know that Bumgarner got better defense? Doesn’t it assume that pitchers on the same team got the same defense since they had the same players?

Does it only look at the defensive stats from the innings that particular pitchers were pitching?

No, it doesn't

It looks at the team’s defense over the whole season, for the very good reason that there’s no real reason to think that the defense might actually play better for one pitcher than for others.

by speckops on Dec 30, 2011 11:06 AM PST up reply actions

Most position players are average fielders.

That’s cool. I believe that most pitchers in the major leagues (because we’re dealing with a preselected group of pitchers) will have a league average BABIP and will play to their true talent level, regardless of the base state. As in, pitchers will generally be as effective with the bases empty as with runners on base. And those are some big reasons to use FIP rather than an ERA based WAR.

Also, I believe that defensive matrix for an entire team is more reliable for that for one player.

Why? You’re just adding noisy terms together. I mean, conceivably everything could cancel out, but you could also be left with a larger error term. Also, do you have evidence for this connection between how a pitcher pitches and his defense?

Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.

I should say not easily quantified.

Again, the vast majority of a position player’s value comes from their offensive production. There are some great fielders that complement a lack of offensive production but generally speaking, position players noted for their offensive skills.

You can believe all u want that metrics don’t accurately account for defense. And that offensive is way more important (you’re right) but please please please stop saying this sentence:

Most position players are average fielders

It’s just so wrong

Quote from my adopted son Mike Krukow: "We're the Giants. We're San Francisco. And we're World Series Champions!"

by DFARowand on Dec 30, 2011 11:28 AM PST up reply actions

Yes, 1) has nothing to do with fielding. My point was more along the lines of what Bayes would call a prior. You have someone that is good enough to be in the majors. Chances are, if he’s a position player, that he’s average defensively. Chances are, if he’s a pitcher, that he’ll have a league average BABIP and a league average ability to “pitch situationally.”

Does it make more sense why I made that analogy?

2) I’m pretty certain that adding more noisy data points together isn’t really going to help. Furthermore, you’ve said (and I agree) that one season of defensive metrics is not very helpful.

Ok, what happens when you take that too-small sample size and divide it into 8 parts? An even smaller sample. (Why 8? Well, a starting pitcher who throws ~200 innings will be responsible for about 1 in every 8 innings that the team pitches). And now you’re going to take that even smaller sample size and use it to adjust the pitcher’s true ERA? That seems completely nuts to me.

by speckops on Dec 30, 2011 11:20 AM PST up reply actions

I’m pretty certain that adding more noisy data points together isn’t really going to help

It’s pretty easy to show using probability that the team’s fielding metric is more reliable than any one individual (providing you make the appropriate adjustment to assume that each fielder should receive the major league average number of balls for his position). Not sure why you’d think otherwise, since you clearly have a very good understanding of probability.

Based on your description, it sounded more like systematic problems.

by Hyoton on Dec 30, 2011 7:39 PM PST up reply actions

It depends how it's calculated

If it’s a truly team-based metric — something like outs/balls in play — that is unbiased and would be more accurate than individual player UZRs. But is the sum of individual player UZRs an unbiased estimator of team defense? I’m not too sure.

But even if you do have a good estimate of team defense based on a single-season’s sample (and that seems at least plausible to me), there’s no way you could use it to compare pitchers on the same team. In that case — only the innings pitched by a single player — your sample size is no bigger than single-season UZR for a single fielder.

by taliesin on Dec 30, 2011 5:20 PM PST up reply actions

Agree it’s how its calculated

Why can’t you compare? Say you have 5 starting pitchers on the same team, four of whom have an ERA of 4 and total team UZR of 0 per 9 innings, and the other has an ERA of 4.5 with a UZR of -1 per 9. Is the safer assumption that the 5th pitcher is better or worse than the other four?

It’s important to phrase this correctly – you make it sound like we are attempting to take into account something we can’t measure reliably, because it’s present in our calculation. But we aren’t – we are actually throwing out the bit we can’t measure.

It’s not about being certain – the inherent randomness means we can never be certain. Nobody is saying that this calculation provides a perfect analysis of a pitcher’s performance level, but BR would at least claim its more accurate than the alternative. Undeniably, it is wrong to assume the pitcher deserves full credit (positive and negative) for any difference between actual BABIP and team average BABIP (which is approximately what this achieves). Equally undeniably, assuming the pitcher has zero control over BABIP is wrong. The question we should be asking is “which is the least flawed”.

by sarf_london_niner on Dec 30, 2011 9:24 PM PST up reply actions

You can't compare

Because there isn’t nearly a large enough sample size, even over a full season, to compare the defensive performance behind one pitcher to another. There’s just no way that two hundred innings is a big enough of sample — even of team defense — that you could draw statistically significant conclusions from it.

Now if the pitchers were on different teams, then you could compare the two teams’ defenses across ALL of the innings for the season, and I do guess that differences in team defense over 1500 innings probably are statistically significant.

by taliesin on Dec 31, 2011 11:59 AM PST up reply actions

Can you give me an example of how you are comparing – I don’t follow how you can compare inter-team but not intra-team? We might be talking at cross purposes. Let’s say you have a pitcher on a team with high UZR, and another on a team with lower UZR. The two pitchers have superficially similar stats, so you might just assume the high UZR team’s pitcher was helped.

Or, to put it another way: The McCovey Creed says Matt Cain has the ability to surpress BABIP. If Cain can reduce his ERA by just 0.25, that’s just over 5 runs in a season. UZR would give the fielders, not Cain, the credit for this, increasing team UZR/150 by about 5. That’s the difference in the Giants’ defence being ranked about 8th to about 24th. So is the Giants defence only above average because of Cain, or is Cain only a low BABIP pitcher because of the Giants defence? If it’s a combination of the two, what combination? And would it really be more useful to give Cain zero credit?

by sarf_london_niner on Dec 31, 2011 5:16 PM PST up reply actions

If you read back up the thread

See this comment. CalBear was raising a hypothetical where “Maybe the team plays great defense behind only one pitcher on a team and that pitcher benefits greatly while the other pitchers don’t get that same defense.”

This might happen, but my point was that it would be impossible to measure. The best unbiased adjustment for the team’s defensive ability would be the same for two pitchers on the same team.

Your Cain example is slightly different but would suffer from the same measurement problems on a single-season basis. But I think over a career if a pitcher had a true ability to suppress BABIP it might be possible to detect by comparing the team’s overall defensive BABIP to the pitcher’s personal BABIP. If, over five seasons or more, Cain’s BABIP was .250 but the Giants’ overall defensive BABIP was .300 I’d be inclined to believe the effect was real. (I’m assuming some adjustment to make sure it wasn’t just an artifact of Cain’s high fly-ball rate.) Off the top of my head I don’t know how to construct the test statistic for that though.

I’m having a hard time continuing. Many quests/actions feel too similar and grindy. After playing WoW for a few years, Skyrim quests seem very repetitive (not that WoW wasn’t, but there is more to do in WoW.)

Anyone have similar experience? Does it get better after more hours? Maybe it’s because I’m playing on a PC?

That’s one of the Mr’s big complaints: that the PC uh ports ? aren’t very good. Shit used to be designed for PC and then converted to gaming consoles now it’s the other way around and the apparently the functionality sucks. Something about leaning around buildings in one of his shoot ’em up games is now gone from the PC version of the game.

Almost all games are designed for the Xbox because that is where the big money is. Meaning when they take those games back to PC the graphics and controls are much worse than they should be due to old hardware and a more limiting controller. But you can’t blame them for going for the bigger audience.

I’ll admit Skyrim graphics look AMAZING on the PC. But the controls suck! Why do I have to look around to loot? I should be able to click on bodies and items to get them, not shift around in front of a bookcase for 5 minutes trying to get the dialogue to appear.

I’m also glad there are no “collect 8 frog legs but not every frog has legs” quests in Skyrim. But 1) run to dungeon 2) kill some mobs 3) run out of bag space 4) kill boss 5) collect weapon/armor 6) go back to quest giver gets really old after the 20th time.

Fast Eddie and real-world athletes might choke when it matters most because the stress of the situation or outside life seeps in, Beilock and colleagues reported in May in the Journal of Experimental Psychology. The team is investigating what happens in the brains of athletes who fail to perform to their potential when the stakes are highest.

"In these stressful situations, athletes become worried about the situation and its consequences, and these worries disrupt ability to allocate attention to where they need it," says Beilock.

Malfunctions of the prefrontal cortex, the center of the brain’s reasoning, emotional control and focusing abilities, are primarily to blame, Beilock says. Stress prompts the prefrontal cortex to try to control information that should be left outside of conscious awareness, causing what she calls "paralysis by analysis."

Like Milton, Beilock studies golfers, and she has found that high levels of stress increase activation in the prefrontal cortex of experts, preventing scratch golfers from keeping their swings on autopilot. Such overanalyzing prevents the successful execution of fluid, habit-filled performances that should run automatically, she says.

As someone who’s been unemployed a lot (A LOT) over the years, all I can say it’s one of those paradoxes that when you’re unemployed, all you do is want to work and yet when you’re working, you kind of wish you were unemployed. Or that’s how I’ve always experienced it. Everytime I get up at 7 in the morning I curse the fact that I’m working again

so, I suffered a horrific tragedy this morning

I’ve been rewatching the entire 2010 postseason (well all the Giants games, I mean). It’s slow going because I’m always too damn busy. But I finally finished up the NLCS last night.

I went to start Game 1 of the World Series this morning. And, as I reached to pull the DVD out of the case….the disc BROKE IN HALF.

This is pretty much the worst thing ever to happen.

Glad to have the World Series win, but still waiting on my Kim Batiste bobblehead. GET OFF YOUR HANDS, GIANTS BRASS!!!!

I just had a nice long post thanking you for doing that and SBN ate it. Grrr…. thank-you for fixing it up!

I have problems using the wiki page, sometimes it lets me delete stuff other times it doesn’t, it doesn’t link things how I think it should link them, so I gave up trying to do it.

The other thing I was going to put on the wiki was a shortened version of an AT&T park visitors guide that we had all worked on [in answer to a Ranger fan’s questions] but this was done in 08 or 09 and now is unfindable. HEY SBN FIX THE FRICKING SEARCH FUNCTION!!!

Maybe during the off season we can add something like that to the wiki. IIRC the fanpost included things like tips on weather, transit, parking, restaurants, hotels, and nightlife in the area. A “what to see AT the park” might also be a good addition. Where IS the WS trophy? Where is Eddie Grant’s plaque? etc

Wonderful job. That reminds me, its getting about that time of year that we start running the adoption draft again. I ran it last year, and I was afraid that the crapout of the SBN search engine would be a problem, but you and Merope have saved so much time. I would be willing to run the draft again (as I am tossing out my adoptee), and I figured I’d start that up sometime in the middle of January.

I can’t see how the ‘93 Giants could never not be #1 considering they only won 103 games yet still didn’t make it into the playoffs. In part because a certain team from SoCal gave away their best players to the Giants rival and division foe for a couple bags of peanuts in the middle of the season

Oh, wait, I got my St. Louis’ crossed. The Rams used to be in LA so that’s one reason. They used to be rivals with Niners so that’s another. And where else would you stick them in order to fill up divisions? The other only two cities to the West are Denver and KC and they’re both in the AFC West.

i thought it was pretty good. i’m reading the book now and not enjoying it as much because the author includes so many boring and pointless details.

I never saw the Swedish version, nor did I read the book.

But my feelings about the movie were that I liked it, but I didn’t love it. My thoughts were actually were pretty much in line with Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers: “From Fincher we get a faithful adaptation that brings the dazzle but shortchanges on the daring.”

I just thought it could’ve been better.

The writing’s supposed to be awful. Like worse than Dan Brown & Stephanie Meyers combined. And one has to wonder what was going through his head while writing it what with all the raping, incest and sexism.

apparently

when he was 15, he witnessed three of his friends gang-raping a girl their age. her name was lisbeth. there’s something a bit off about naming the protagonist of his book directly after her, idk.

The New Yorker had a great article about the author, both about how bad he is as a writer and also about he’s like the last person you’d expect to be writing such a huge and successful piece of literature:

http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/atlarge/2011/01/10/110110crat_atlarge_acocella

I’d buy the translation line as the reason why the writing’s really stilted but that doesn’t seem to affect Murakami, whose writing always just blows me away.

by Dingoes Ate My Baby on Dec 31, 2011 10:45 AM PST up reply actions

and the writing isn't quite stephenie myer bad

but it is bad.

probably partly because it’s a translation, but it also needs an editor badly. like i just read this part that went something like:

“Blomkvist went down to town. He went to a café. He bought a newspaper and a coffee. He sat down. It was about 7:30. He drank his coffee. There was no news in the newspaper. He finished his coffee at about 8.”

I think I read somewhere that that style was actually deliberately chosen, which would suggest that it plays out a lot better in Swedish.

Giants fans:

I have been offered Belt in a fantasy deal that I won’t bore you with, but I’d love your expertise to help with one part of it. If you look to the small non-cynical part of your heart, what does it tell you the answer to the following questions are?

1) Barring injury (to him), will Belt be in the starting line-up at least 90% of the time in 2012?
2) Will Belt play at least 20 games in the OF?

Thanks!

by Al Swedgin on Dec 31, 2011 1:27 AM PST reply actions

1) I doubt it
2) I would think so, but now they’re talking as though he can only hit at first, so idk.

1) Absolutely not. I will eat my hat if Brandon Belt starts 146 games in 2012. It’s not happening unless he gets traded. I don’t know how to accurately convey how impossible it is.
2) Yes, but it’ll be in Fresno. In all seriousness, I have no idea. The front office is kind of inscrutable, and now they’re talking about keeping Belt at first, or something. It’s really hard to tell.
