A's To San Jose, For Realsies?
At least according to this story. Looks like that rainy day may be coming for Giants owners. I wouldn't expect any major short-term impact, but losing a slice of the Silicon Valley ad-revenue pie, and seeing the next generation of South Bay fans flock to the A's is bound to put a crimp on the Giants' long-term earning potential. The question is, how big of one? No news of any potential buyout of the Giants' rights.

By “permission,” do they mean MLB have given permission, or that the Giants have given permission? I don’t want to see this happen.

Don't know.
MLB has the ability to re-assign territorial rights, but I believe it requires a vote of the owners.
If Wolff and Selig have rounded up enough owners, then the Giants would be in an extremely weak negotiation position.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think you need a 3/4 majority to overrule territorial rights without the consent of the side that will be losing the territory. If so, the Giants only need 7 more teams to take their side. In that case, all of the big market teams in very tight territorial situations (see: New York x2, Chicago x2, Baltimore/Washington, etc) will be loath to allow this to happen, if only to avoid the precedent it would set in the case that their territorial partner would decide to relocate.

Maybe last year
Rumor has it that at the winter meetings popular opinion of the Giants among owners soured substantially. The Giants’ reps left in a big hurry on the last day, turns out they were trying to get out of Dodge without leaving a tip behind for room service. The maids chased after them and confronted the Giants’ reps in the lobby of the hotel. The Giants’ reps could merely look at the ground and mutter some pathetic excuse about “need to conserve cash, rainy day fund”.
by Sgt. Dingleberry on Dec 24, 2011 9:52 PM PST up reply actions
OTOH, a lot of those same teams are tired of subsidizing the A's via revenue sharing.
It’s impossible to know how backroom politics will shake out, and we shouldn’t just assume that a business that seems to rely so much on informal relationships and good old boys clubs will decide an issue purely on self interest. In that respect, the Giants’ lack of a strong majority owner probably hurts them: with no legitimate face of the ownership, there’s no one to do real glad handing behind the scenes. I’m sure that Baer has done well for himself, but I doubt he runs in the same social circles as normal team owners. At the end of the day, he’s an outsider to the billionaires’ club.
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
If it comes down to Baer’s personal relationships with the other front offices, then you’re right, the Giants are screwed.
My adopted Giant, the young Reinier Roibal
In general, it shouldn't
But if we’re talking about a couple of swing votes, it very well might. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Reinsdorf, a close friend of Wolff, has publicly supported the A’s move to San Jose.
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
Long ways to go
No other outlet is reporting anything which makes me think it may not be quite as solid as USA Today is claiming.
However, this move would require a a vote of the owners and unlike the Baltimore/Washington case, the Giants have the territorial rights to San Jose. (Angelos did not have territorial rights but he did have the cable rights to the area).
I’m not sure how far the Giants are ready to go but they have legal options and could string this thing out for quite some time if they wanted.
My guess is MLB is about to throw chunkloads of money at the Giants to avoid all that. Too bad they couldn’t do it last week before Beltran went to St. Louis

The atmosphere in SJ is completely different this time around. The city has already given Wolff first rights to a chunk of land downtown, and have been negotiating for years in anticipation. My understanding is that it would not be a city-financed stadium, which means no ballot measure is needed.

I’d imagine that it might matter on how one tallies it. (Does it count if they were ever associated with the university, or did they have to do their Prize-winning work at that university?) But my point was more along the lines that 5 Nobel Prize winners in chemistry had worked in my building, so the Stanfordium point is odd to me.

You’ve never heard that joke before? Anyway it would be interesting to see an official list of Laureates by university. The best part of the non official list on wikipedia is that both Cal and Stanford are ahead of most those monocle toting Ivy League schools.

A's in San Jose won't be a prob for Giants
as much as the 49ers might be. Giants were second fiddle to Niners until early 2000s when York Sr. got greedy and figured Niners would be no. 1 in the Bay area forever. If the Niners continue to improve and Giants continue to tread water it looks like the shoe could end up on the other foot.
Having the A’s competing with the Giants in Santa Clara County in the same area as the new 49er stadium can only hurt the Giants. Stoneham and Lurie paid big prices in the 70s and 90s for complacency combined with penny-pinching.
I think anybody who uses the words “Jed York Jr.” and “dominate” is off on the wrong footing. The only successful thing the Niners ownership did since taking over was hiring Harbaugh and that’s not exactly a harbinger of continued success.
That said, I much prefer this area being considered a baseball area than a football area.

FWIW, I’ll be happy when the A’s move to San Jose and get a nice stadium. The Bay Area deserves to have robust sports franchises.

When it cuts into sponsorship dollars for the Giants you won't be so happy
Quote from my adopted son Mike Krukow: "We're the Giants. We're San Francisco. And we're World Series Champions!"
In his possibly altered state, he might tear back the fabric of reality to reveal
that even NFL players wished they played baseball, healthy or not.

This is definitely the side of modern pro sports I hate the most. A’s are going to get a heaping helping of public money as their reward for letting the team stagnate year after year. The Giants, with their privately financed park and moderate payroll, are going to be rewarded with a significantly reduced base of corporate sponsors.
My hopes exceed my expectations
-WeepingTile
The argument can be made that the A’s are stagnating because they have yet to receive those public appropriations. They are hardly being helped by that awful ballpark in a poor location with an annoyed fanbase. Also, the Giants’ payroll is hardly moderate.
My adopted Giant, the young Reinier Roibal
The story is told that the Giants were franchise-non-grata in the eyes of the rest of MLB for a number of years because they dared to privately finance their stadium after being turned down repeatedly by the public. The Giants figured it was the only way out of Candlestick but MLB wanted them to try to remain on the public teet.
Though it is clearly well-informed, we find his argument unconvincing; however, the possibility that we are too stupid to comprehend it deserves serious consideration. Germane Literature: The Cutting Edge 13:2, 4/2006
I wouldn’t call the Giants payroll “moderate”
proud son of greatgiantfan; b. Apr 29, 2009, d. Jul 30, 2010.
I’ve heard rumors or at least speculation to that affect, that what the Giants did was seen as setting a bad precedent because if they pulled off a publicly financed stadium, it’ll make it harder for teams in every sport to blackmail governments into building stadiums for them. Whether it’s effected them in MLB I don’t know but why other cities just don’t tell every other sports team looking to build a new stadium to stuff it and build it themselves I don’t know.

And getting that 1st seed would mean the 49ers could avoid the Saints, which would be huge. I wouldn’t want Brees to get a chance against that secondary, considering how aggressive they can be sometimes.

Sometimes teams thinks it’s better to keep the pedal to the metal going into the playoffs instead of laying off for a few games and resting up. The Colts were sort of notorious for sitting everyone for a week or two before games and when they got upset in the playoffs, it was often blamed on that.
