He who does not economize will have to agonize.

The Giants aren't cheap

Much like Dr. Zoidberg, they’ve put all their money in a sandwich-heavy portfolio, and now they’ve got the choice of eating their moldy Zito on wheat or letting it continue to rot and stink up the joint.

You couldn't be more wrong

They can’t possibly justify spending only $130M on the payroll this year! That’s only in the top 1/3 of baseball, probably higher!

Seth Rosin can hit the side of a barn with a baseball. From space.

Although will always be a diehard fan, have a bunch of guys so far, and a few gals, who have pledged a moratorium on purchasing giants goods for one year.

If the team is holding the line, and the team being owners who are collectively billionaires, us thousandaire fans are holding the ine too. No bobbleheads are pandahats for me this year, No giraffes, or Posey or Lincecum Jerseys, or giants hats, or tee shirts, or triangular pennants. Not this year.

The way I see it.

I loaded up on World Series gear last season, and there’s no reason to replace that stuff until they have more World Series gear to sell.

I’m sure as hell not going to buy any “NL West Champion” or “Second Wildcard” shirts until I run out of 2010 stuff.

Come on, you can’t go from a sans serif to a serif! My suspension of disbelief only goes so far.

recanting?

Can I assume that somewhere, perhaps in the Barbed Wire post, there is a recantation of this?

Any group of business persons had damn well better be cautious when they know they face a long-term instability, and probably reduction, in their revenue stream, with an unknown amount of windfall coming in, but very high future drains of revenue. Giant management apparently is in this position. They look as though they will lose San Jose to a rival box-office, they can’t tell how much they will get by way of compensation or at what rate they will get it, and they do know that they have a number of players whom they will want to keep and will have to pay high salaries in order to do so. They have therefore so far spent in order to get us nearer a league-average offense and arguably improved the defense, while waiting to see how the situation clarifies itself. This makes excellent sense.

This situation is one that Grant_MM did not know when s/he posted this bit of playful spite or spiteful play, but now that s/he does, keeping it up has become a bit embarrassing.

OTOH

Now is the ideal time to re-invest in the team and steal wind from the A’s sails. A new park has a short-lived wow factor, but loyalty is derived from long-term performance. While it is unfortunate that one of the team’s revenue streams may be more strongly contested in the future, it seems to me that it would be wiser to spend some extra money in a winning team now to gain more loyal customers going forward rather than simply conceding a substantial percentage of the market by holding the course. Resting on laurels is fine for monopolies, but suicidal for businesses with actual competition.

A move to San Jose by the A’s might mean a significant downturn in fortune for the Giants, but a lack of response in SF assures that it will.

I don’t disagree at all with the thrust of what you say, but while the situation is so fluid I think it’s prudent to hold off on the type and degree of further investment. At least it’s a rational decision to do so, not a scrooge-y meanness. If as the situation with the A’s resolves itself, Giants management balks at doing what they can clearly do, then I will be unhappy enough to put me in good standing as a poster on this site—maybe even more so, since I am in my mid-to-late seventies, and need those triumphant processions to come pretty soon if I am to be around to enjoy them. In the meantime, though, I prefer to go easy on the infectious paranoia that often takes the place of rational discussion on this site when no one can fall back on sabermetrics or the kind of sober scouting that I associate with Fla-Giant, Brute Sentiment, and a few others.

I would not make that assumption.
