Chuck Lofgren will attempt to make the transition to hitter after eight years as a minor league pitcher. Lofgren, a former star pitcher and hitter at Serra High who was drafted by Cleveland in the fourth round in 2004, pitched at three levels in the Giants organization in 2011. The Giants now will give him a shot at making the transition to first base or outfield for the 2012 season after re-signing him as a minor league free agent. "(Giants vice president) Bobby Evans told me he liked my swing and that he wanted to work with me," Lofgren said Wednesday. "I'm excited, I can't wait."

Missed this little tidbit from last week until I saw a note about the switch on MLB Depth Charts. Lofgren was a two-way player coming out of Serra, and I'm surprised the Indians didn't try this earlier.
