I thought we were signing Whiteside to a minor league deal
But that said he got a major league deal, is he going to be the backup ahead of Stewart?
Sundrendy!
Whiteside on the 40-man roster – which is now full again. That means we’ll have to wiave somebody when we sign Beltran.

He got a ML deal with a split contract
So basically if/when he goes to AAA he’ll get a higher pay

Aren’t all major league contracts like that?

I don't think so, but I'm not sure

No
For example, some players have the right to refuse an assignment to the minor leagues. Whiteside’s deal is an ML deal (to my limited understanding) in the sense that he doesn’t get a guaranteed spot on the 25-man but he’ll get paid a higher salary for being in the minors ($175,000). That’s still not league minimum, but it’s something like three times more than a typical minor league deal I believe, so it’s not insubstantial. He is also listed as being on the 40-man and 25-man. No indication if there’s an opt-out clause for either party.
I think it is basically a “you’re on the roster right now, but we can demote you to the minors quite easily”. Not all contracts are like that – they’d have a hell of a time trying to demote Zito or Huff or someone else who’s on a guaranteed contract. Same thing with guys like Rowand – no reason to release him if you could stash him in the minors, but you can’t, at least not without calling it a rehab assignment and that is up after 20 days. No one would claim him off waivers, either, because then they could be on the hook for his contract, so if you could put him in AAA you could get the 25-man AND 40-man spot back. Whiteside, however, can be demoted I believe. Also, I don’t believe minor league salaries are set this early in the typical contracts of players who are demoted, I think they just get paid whatever, but I could be very wrong on that.

Giants baseball: We're stupid enough to WIN that (TM)
Some of the things that you wrote may be true, but you are wrong about the Giants ability to send Whiteside to the minors. Whiteside is still under team control (he has a little over 3 years of major league service time) and has at least 1 more year of waiver exemptions on his record. He can be moved on and off the 25 man roster and sent to the minors by the Giants without any DFA or waiver process. Likewise, the fact that a player is on the 40 man roster automatically makes his team have to pay him a higher salary in the minor leagues. Finally, no major league contract governs whether or not a player can be taken off the 25 man roster and sent to the minors – that’s governed by the CBA and is currently set at 3 seasons once put on the 40-man roster (although in some special cases a team can get a 4th season of waiver exemptions – like the Giants currently have with Gillaspie). Now, in rare cases a team will give a guy that is still under waiver exemption a contract that lets him opt for free agency if he is optioned to the minors – but those are very rare.
