Major league contract? Stupid. Hopefully Hector Sanchez will be ready by mid season to back up Posey and we won’t hear Eli’s (or Chris Stewart’s) names again.

Proud owner of over 20,000 comments. (most of them in the wrong place) Oh yeah, and Buster Posey

Agreed

I’m quite surprised they gave him a major league deal. No reason to carry four catchers on the 40-man.

It doesn’t make sense even if it’s just for $500,000.

A major league deal?

I am really, really losing patience with this team. This deal is unnecessary and unwarranted.

With a Minor League Option

600k if he makes the Major League Club, but “only” 175k if he plays the season in the Minors. Still, with the amount of decent Prospects at Catcher we have, this doesn’t make a ton of sense. Maybe they wanted some one with major league experience to help out Jospeh, Sanchez, Susac, etc? Who knows any more…

It think it's pretty obvious from the Posey situation that they place inordinate value on the savvyness of their catchers.

Hitting, controlling the running game, framing pitches, these things are tertiary concerns after seniority and being chummy with the rotation.

I agree in general, that is what the FO does...

But really Posey was one of the few times they chose possible talent over seniority. They traded Bengie after all – none of us thought that would happen in a million years (or at least I didn’t). The fact that Posey started off hitting the cover off the ball in 2010 might have had a lot to do with that though…
In any case, it seemed to me that toward the end of last season, even they preferred Stewart for that “chummy with the rotation” role over Whiteside. My one big fear about this signing is that they are worried about Posey’s health and this is their insurance.

Son of a....

Mark this down as fact:

Whiteside starts at least 2 games a week for the first 5 months, batting .210, and letting “wild pitches” pass by him with reckless abandon.

THIS IS WHY WE CANT HAVE NICE THINGS!

This team is a tease. 2010 Giants baseball playing Just the Tip with the best of them.

Really?!

Heard earlier today it was going to be a minor league deal. Suddenly its a major league deal! I’m betting Bochy went and complained about the veteran gritty savviness that the team would be lacking at catcher (which he’s an expert on, since thats the only thing he provided as a player,) and Sabean said, you know, you’re right! Forget stats, I’m just gonna go with my gut, and sign back old Whitey! Moves like this is why Sabean drives me crazy!

A major league deal with a minor league rider keeps him in the organization. It’s not like he has a team playbook, but he knows our pitching staff inside and out. Perhaps the Giants don’t like the idea of him going to another organization…just yet. I can’t think of another reason.

I'm sure he is a nice guy and all

but I cannot stand him on the Giants and I hate that Bochy has the option to play him.

So much this

Stewart appeared to me to be a much better defender. I guess Whitey is a better hitter but that isn’t saying very much.

Amazingly, Stewart was actually better by OPS+ in 2011.

Glad to have the World Series win, but still waiting on my Kim Batiste bobblehead. GET OFF YOUR HANDS, GIANTS BRASS!!!!

He was for awhile last year

But Stewart picked it up toward the end. Neither of them will ever be actually good, but Stewart isn’t as much of a zero at the plate as he would need to be to justify putting Whiteside higher on the depth chart.
