I voted Susac

For the same reasons as I posted at great lengths in the last thread. Who would have thought that we’d possibly have 3 catchers in the top 7 headng into 2012 when we voted last year?

You've convinced me

I was underwhelmed by his draft selection in June. But the hamate bone injury explains a great deal. If he truly has some pop in his bat, I’m fine with ranking him this high – whether he ends up a catcher or outfielder or whatever.

Gotta love those Sacramento boys.

I also voted Susac

I’ve said before, I won’t be the least bit surprised if he is our #1 prospect this time next year, even if Gary Brown still hasn’t used his rookie eligibility. (I do feel in my gut that Panik will be rushed next year and his eligibility will be used up in 2012; he will either replace a struggling Crawford or a hurt Freddy sometime in July or August.)

He has Buster upside, except he should be more advanced as a defensive catcher than Buster was at the same point in his career. He also should have more power.

That is a really sexy combination. I still need to see him play next year before I would rank him near where he is likely to be ranked next year, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he was the best hitter in the Cal League in 2012.

Boy, I haven’t seen anybody ever suggest Susac has Posey’s hit tool, though i agree he’s got the better power tool (no pun intended).

Surprised myself a bit by going Adrianza here

I like Susac’s upside, but I really, really need to see him in pro ball before I put him above a slick-fielding SS who had a pretty damned good year in the CAL at a young age despite a high BABIP. It was very close, and Susac’s certainly No. 8 for me and I can see him here, but I like Adrianza a tiny bit better.

more like half a year

Also, he turned 22 during the season. That’s not old for the Cal League, but I wouldn’t call it young, either. The average age for a hitter in the Cal League is 22.6 (well, it was in 2009, which is what I found data for), and that includes a lot of non-prospects.

Glad to have the World Series win, but still waiting on my Kim Batiste bobblehead. GET OFF YOUR HANDS, GIANTS BRASS!!!!

err, correction

22.6 was the average age for High-A, not specifically the Cal League.

In Low-A, where Adrianza started 2011, the average age for a hitter is 21.6, which is about exactly how old he was starting the year. So no, I don’t think it’s really fair to give him credit for being young for the levels at which he played.

Question

why did Susac fall to the 2nd round?

Mark DeRosa , he had his moments.

by oldjacket on Dec 17, 2011 5:11 PM PST reply actions

He was a draft eligible sophomore, so he had more leverage than the typical college hitter. Also, he broke his hamate bone (the same bone that Pablo broke) in the beginning of the season, which sapped his power somewhat his sophomore year. That’s scary, because he still managed a .239 ISO.

Not to mention that it was probably the deepest and highest qualtiy draft in about a decade. Guys going in the late-1st and early supplemental would likely have been top 10 or top 15 in recent drafts.

It was deep with good quality, but I wouldn’t go overboard. It will have it’s work cut out for it matching up to the great draft class of 2005, which was supposed to be the class of a generation and is looking to be just that so far. And the draft class of 2002 has been pretty special as well. I suspect 2011 will fit in third behind of those two pretty exceptional hauls.

Guess who I'm voting for?

I admit, it’s kind of funny to see people vote for Hector Sanchez this high. Last year, when i put Hector Sanchez in the SFDugout Top 10, there were a lot of people who thought I was insane.

I don’t know about that, Sanchez has always had his supporters around here. He was #16 on the CPL last year and was getting strong support as high as 11 or 12. I’ve never known quite what to make of him personally and proceed on the side of caution. I’d have him 9 or 10 in my own list.

As for this spot, I’m joining you with Peguero and if we ever get him voted in I’m Adrianza next. They were my preferred duo at 5 and 6.

I think Pegs is almost assured of the #8 spot – if he doesn’t sneak past Susac to win here.

As for Hector, I think most of us that have followed him have always acknowledged his special tools and talent, but (and I fall into this category) it was difficult to rate him too high due to his seeming lack of effort and lack of attention to keeping in good physical condition. He was noticeably overweight and slowed in his actions during the 2010 Sally season. It serves as a good reminder that some prospects take longer to mentally mature and seize their opportunity than others.

Maybe, but I still don’t know that I think all that highly of him as a prospect. I’m not sure what to make of his bat, but I’m not convinced yet that it’s going to play at upper levels. I think he’s going to be an above average backup but beyond that I’m not sure I’m willing to go.

It’s hard to know what to make of his bat because his peripherals keep changing so much. He started out as a singles-hitting walk machine, evolved into a hacking home run hitter, then turned cautious again when he was promoted over his head—drew more walks and cut his k rate sharply.

His aggressive promotions this year would seem to indicate that the organization thinks highly of him, though in light of the fast-tracking of Bocock, Burriss, et al., that may not be great news.

by Evan on Dec 18, 2011 1:41 PM PST up reply actions

Right, and add to that he’s had a tendency for peripherals to show up in the worst places: high walk rate in the DSL and AZL where young pitchers frequently have such bad command it doesn’t mean much, and then HR power in the Cal league. It’s all adds up to a fuzzy picture that I can’t quite interpret.

UPDATE

Susac leads Peguero 51-44 after roughly 22 hours of voting.

On another note, today is my brother’s birthday and we’re about to head out for some family time. I’m going to extend the voting window on the poll to 5pm, and that’s when I’ll be able to post Prospect List #8/Runoff List #7 (if necessary), instead of the usual 3:30PM posting time. Apologies for the delay.

I didn’t realize you had a standard posting time – good to know. I’ll have to remember to check that before going to bed (LOL me and the pre-pre-dawn shift).

It just sort of worked out that way – I always seem to be around a computer at the same time each day so I post accordingly. Today was a bit wacky but I should have the next post up in the next few minutes.
